ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES
WELCOME TO THE 2022-23 PLAYHOUSE SEASON!
It’s such a pleasure to be together again, this time at The Carnegie Theatre. As construction of the mainstage theatre complex nears completion in our Eden Park home, we’re thrilled to be performing a Playhouse production on this stage. To our friends here at The Carnegie, thank you!
Today, you’re in for an extraordinary theatrical experience. I consider Frida…A Self Portrait one of the most memorable, one-person shows I’ve ever seen. Written and performed by Vanessa Severo and directed by our very own Associate Artistic Director Joanie Schultz, Frida draws a powerful connection between two incredible artists. Their similarities abound, yet each of these women are brilliant, brave and bold in their own remarkable ways.
Having performed Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express at the Aronoff Center, we continue our fall partnership with The Lion at Warsaw Federal Incline Theater in Price Hill. This solo musical about the redemptive power of music comes to us straight from the London stage for an exclusive Playhouse engagement. Intimately performed by the multi-talented Max Alexander-Taylor, The Lion tells an emotionally stirring tale about love, loss and family through original, modern folk music. By the story’s end, you may have shed a few tears, but you’re sure to feel enormously uplifted.
In our Off the Grid series, we invite you to unravel another mystery in the corn maze at Burger Farm & Garden Center. Just in time for Halloween, Children of the Corn Maze: In Search of the Greenville Ghost takes audiences on a spooky, site-specific adventure. Then, help us ring in the holidays! Favorite characters from A Christmas Carol are hosting an interactive social event you won’t want to miss with Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig’s Holiday Party.
All these exciting events lead up to the grand opening of our mainstage theatre complex, featuring Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre, in March 2023. We’re so close to bringing this once-in-a-generation project to a close, and we’re elated to show you what we and our partners at BHDP have been working on so diligently. The all-new space will officially mark the beginning of a new theatrical era.
Thank you for being part of our growing, diverse, artistic community. You are Playhouse in the Park.

Frida...A Self Portrait
FRIDA...A SELF PORTRAIT
DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY JOANIE SCHULTZ
Women disappear. We have to search hard to find women in our history books, the literary canon, classical music, art history and the history of drama, where women are footnotes, if there at all. Their work was “amateur” (because they weren’t allowed to be professional) and was neither respected nor documented. And therefore, they disappear.
Frida Kahlo, obfuscated by her “genius” husband for most of her life, was too feisty to allow herself to disappear. She wasn’t a “nice” woman or a “good girl.” She made herself seen. She forced herself to look at herself. She studied and painted and saw herself “as she truly is.” Frida reached a level of realness with herself, both inside and out that few women had documented before her. She showed the world her truth, her vulnerability and her humanity. That was a revolutionary act.
We are drawn to self-portraits, memoirs and other forms of autobiography because they make us feel seen and not so alone. This becomes even more important when history tries to make some of us disappear: Women, people of color, people with disabilities, queer people and trans people across the world look at Frida’s self-portraits and see themselves because they recognize the pain she articulates so well in her work. Frida has given the world a gift by being so authentically herself. She is all of us, and we can see that we exist because she existed. She gives us permission to value ourselves, our lives, our pain, our
thoughts and our feelings just as she did.
Frida…A Self Portrait is a self-portrait of both the historical figure and performer Vanessa Severo. An actor expresses themselves by interpreting others. As an actor, what better way to create a self-portrait than to perform someone else? This self-portrait – which is as beautiful and honest as Frida was – is created with the paints of an actor’s toolbox: language, characters, accents, movement, puppetry and creative play. In this highly theatrical world on stage, we witness a conversation Vanessa has been having with Frida for years. As the piece unfolds, there are moments when the lines become blurred between the actor and the character. What we are left with is pure Frida and pure Vanessa, both searching to be seen and understood, reaching a hand out to all the other “strange” people in the world through their honest expression of self. Not disappearing…and urging us not to disappear.
Frida’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, builds Casa Azul –Frida’s birthplace, childhood residence and place of death.
July 6, Frida Kahlo is born.
June 7, Frida’s sister, Cristina Kahlo, is born.
Frida meets artist Diego Rivera when he paints a mural at her school.
Frida contracts polio. The disease damages her right leg, causing it to grow shorter than her left leg.
Frida is in a bus accident and sustains extensive injuries. She paints 143 self-portraits in her time healing. Frida meets Diego again and asks for evaluation of her paintings. Frida and Diego are married.
Frida catches her sister, Cristina, having an affair with Diego.
Frida divorces Diego.
Frida remarries Diego.
Frida has the spinal surgery that inspires her painting the Broken Column. She undergoes over 30 surgeries in her lifetime. July 13, The day the play takes place. Frida dies of pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs).

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples who were affected most by the Doctrine of Discovery* and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand.
*The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.
THE LION
By BENJAMIN SCHEUERNOV. 12 - DEC. 4, 2022 WARSAW FEDERAL INCLINE THEATER
Straight from the London stage for an exclusive Playhouse engagement, The Lion features a singer-songwriter who shares the turbulent story of his family and his own brush with mortality. He explores love, loss and the redemptive power of music through heartrending monologues and original songs. Hailed by critics as a “wondrous” and “spellbinding” experience, The Lion redefines the genre of musical theatre.
