The Grand Gardens Egberts Landscaping

This quiet garden is a peaceful retreat away from the busy outside world. The colors of Weeping Cherry, Azalea, Hydrangea, and annuals bring the garden areas to life and soften the hardscape portions of the design. The patio is separated into two sections. The upper level of the patio contains a custom grill enclosure including stainless steel components, wrapped in cultured stone and topped with granite. mikeroweWORKS Foundation As the host of Dirty Jobs and Somebody’s Gotta Do It, Mike Rowe is known for traveling the country, working at just about any dirty job. Now, he’s working to fill those jobs that too often go unfilled—jobs that require skilled labor. In 2008, Rowe started the mikeroweWORKS Foundation to “launch a national PR campaign for skilled labor.” Each year the Foundation funds the Work Ethic Scholarship program to help people train for skilled jobs that are in demand. The Foundation says that since the program started, more than $5 million for Work Ethic scholarships and similar programs have been distributed. More than 200 applicants won scholarships in 2019. Rowe is also a believer in the S.W.E.A.T Pledge, breaking down the importance of work ethic, personal responsibility, delayed gratification, and a positive attitude. The pledge includes:

According to the Foundation, the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists more than seven million jobs available across the country, most of which do not require a fouryear degree. These are the jobs that Mike Rowe is trying to fill through his Foundation, which lists on its website skilled jobs from across the country that need to be filled right away—anything from diesel mechanics and heavy

equipment superintendents to plumbing estimators and CDL licensed truck drivers. “Our crumbling infrastructure, our widening skills gap, the disappearance of vocational education, and the stratospheric rise in college tuition—these are not problems,” Mike says on his website. “These are symptoms of what we value. And right now, we have to reconnect the average American with the value of a skilled workforce. Gary Sullivan has dedicated his entire adult life to the home improvement industry. He has 45 years of experience selling, using, and talking about home improvement products. At the age of 16, Gary began his career working in a hardware store as a stock boy. After attending the University of Cincinnati, he went to work for Cincinnati’s most well-known hardware store chain, Hader Hardware. Gary managed stores in the beginning but quickly moved to the main office in 1980. In 1983, Gary became a limited partner and by 1993 became majority owner and president of this 18-store chain of hardware stores. Gary sold the company in 1997 and remained president until 2001. Gary started his media career in 1986 with WCKY radio. In 1996, he created and hosted a TV show
What are home improvement trends for the coming year? Some of the trends in home improvement are to create a home with minimal maintenance, which includes flooring products like LVT flooring and ceramic and laminate flooring. Outdoor living is huge. Fire pits, decks, and grill options make this a huge focus. Paver stones, decorative concrete, and high-end decks make outdoor living very inviting. Smart homes are becoming a big change for people when remodeling.

How should homeowners begin planning their next project? When people are getting ready to take on a spring or summer project, it’s important to start now. It takes several months of planning before any major project can start in your home. You will need to find a contractor, have a plan for the project, a budget, and selection of materials. This all takes time. It is a great time to do small projects around the home while the weather is dreary. Start projects now like painting, adding insulation, and cleaning out the garage.

Keeping Up with the Joneses You might be surprised as to which generation is more likely to tackle home improvement projects this year. According to a recent report from Home Advisor, it’s millennials (those born anytime from 1981 to 1994), who are more likely than any other generation to remodel any part of their home. They are twice as likely as baby boomers to complete bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects. Homeowners have spent an average of $6,649 on home improvements per household in the last 12 months, according to the study. The top projects include interior painting, landscape installation, bathroom remodeling, flooring installation, and exterior painting or staining. If you are planning a project, here is a good chart for cost comparisons and to help create your budget.

The future of home improvement looks promising over the next year for a number of reasons. Homeowners are choosing improving over moving, which can largely be attributed to an unusually low supply of housing for sale. Also, homeowners plan to spend more, largely on remodels: Millennials have purchased fixer-uppers because they want to live in a certain area of town, while baby boomers have accumulated more wealth in home equity and can take on larger home improvement projects. The study also finds that people in their 60s are adding touches of luxury and convenience while people in their 30s are using savings and home equity to make their homes more efficient, while also improving the aesthetics of their homes.
