Brian Isaac Philips: Celebrating 20 Years
The
The word Company also put the emphasis on the people who make up the organization. It embodied Brian’s belief in the importance of an ensemble of actors working together in an artistic home, in a city where they could put down roots, have homes and families, and become a true part of the community.
Long-time actor at CSC and friend, Jeremy Dubin, reflects on Brian’s career at CSC below: Brian began his career at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (affectionately called “Cincy Shakes”) as an actor. He had craft, some serious comedic chops, and a complete inability to keep a straight face, sparking a tenure that proved he was up for anything. A few years later, when the theater found itself in need of new artistic leadership, he proved it again. When Brian first took up the mantle of Artistic Director, for what was then called The Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, the organization looked a little different than it does today. There was the name: Festival. It was a name that suggested something ephemeral, something fleeting, something here and then gone. And to the patrons who would periodically show up in renaissance garb (yes, really), it also apparently suggested a place where you could eat a giant turkey leg while watching a joust. One of the first changes Brian made was to replace the word Festival with Company. On the surface the change seems minimal, but the word Company was - and continues to be - an important one. It reflects much of the philosophy, commitment and love that Brian brought to his new role, and with which he imbued the entire organization. It was a declaration that Cincy Shakes was here to stay, and of Brian’s determination that CSC should and would become an integral part of Cincinnati, both through the artists it employed and the community it served.
Over the years and under Brian’s leadership, that word, Company, has grown to The 2022-2023 season marks two decades of Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips’ leadership of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Please join our entire community in a celebration of his tenure, talent, and many accomplishments.

Brianpossible.never ceased to test and then exceed the limits. It was a show of confidence in the team he’d assembled, and a tangible demonstration that the depth of art is driven by the courage, commitment, and creativity of the artists. Fueled by Brian’s indomitable passion, CSC created shows that filled every inch of the Race Street stage, shows whose vitality, vivacity, scope, and artistry were bursting the seams and on some occasions literally cracking the walls of the space. Shows that announced to audiences and to the community at large that CSC not only deserved, but absolutely required, a larger stage, both metaphorically and literally. Shows that earned CSC the beautiful new facility in which it now resides. Twenty years ago this space was just a dream. Brian turned it into an inspiration, then a tenable a goal, and finally a home. So, cheers to the man whose leadership has helped shape both this space and the organization it houses. It’s an organization which, under two decades of Brian’s stewardship, has provided employment and opportunities for hundreds of actors, designers, artisans, craftspersons, administrators, educators, students, ushers, board members, and house managers; an organization that over two decades of mainstage productions, FREE Shakespeare in the Park, student matinees, summer camps, classes, PROJECT38, collaborations with the ballet, the opera, the symphony, museums, universities, and so many more, has touched literally hundreds of thousands of lives. -Jeremy Dubin be sure to visit the gallery on the 2nd floor of the lobby to see the 20 years in photos! differed in some other significant ways when Brian first took the reins. Notably, it was smaller. In just about every way. Anyone who has been with us more than a few years will remember our little shoe box theatre on Race Street. It was a lovely home, and the Company had a reputation for great productions, considering its size and resources. Brian was determined to remove that caveat, and make it a place known simply for its great productions. He refused to let ambition be limited by logistics, and had an unrelenting passion and drive to constantly push beyond what seemed
