Professional Associations

Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), founded in 1913, represents more than 49,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. The Equity emblem is our mark of excellence. www.actorsequity.org

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is proud to be a member of The Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA). For more information visit www.stahome.org. STA was established to provide a forum for the artistic, managerial, educational leadership for theatres primarily involved with the production of the works of William Shakespeare; to discuss issues and methods of work, resources, and information; and to act as an advocate for Shakespearean productions and training.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is a member of the Theatre Communications Group (TCG). TCG is the national organization for theatre, with a membership network of 500+ member theatres and over 250 university, funder, trustee, and business affiliates, and over 7,000 individuals. TCG reaches over 1 million students, audience members, and theatre professionals each year through its programs and services.

The National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest presents Shakespeare in American Communities. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is one of 40 professional theater companies across the nation selected to perform a Shakespeare play with a professional team of actors for middle- and high-schools and conduct related educational activities for students.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is a leader in workplace equity, earning an Ellequate Bronze in 2022. Ellequate-certified employers are leaders in making diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces the norm rather than the exception. Employers that are certified as Leaders In Workplace Equity meet standards of performance and accountability in six key measures of workplace culture, demonstrated by people-first policies, practices, and benefits, as well as employee experience. Ellequate is the nation's leading data-informed employer certification and cohort-based leadership program for intersectional workplace equity.

at CSC

This production of The Living Dead by Isaiah Reaves is the first play in Company history that was commissioned, developed, and given a world-premiere production entirely at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. This represents what we hope is the first in a long line of exciting new plays, elevating fresh and diverse new voices in the American Theatre. Starting with a commitment to the commissioning of new works in 2019, we are proud and excited to see The Living Dead reach full production here at CSC, and look forward to many more to come!

Why is Cincinnati Shakespeare Company commissioning, developing, and producing new plays?

Shakespeare wasn’t always a classic. He started as a young playwright fighting for his voice to be heard. Who is next? How will we discover the next Shakespeare whose work will stand the test of time?

At Cincinnati Shakespeare Company we believe that we have a responsibility to find and nurture those new voices. We should not just be pulling from the classical canon but contributing to the classical canon. That is why we are thrilled to begin commissioning new plays from exciting new voices in the American Theatre. Plays that are classical in theme, in source material, in inspiration, or in style, but told by fresh new voices and from new perspectives. We hope we can be a place where artists feel that their voices are encouraged and that their work can flourish. And who knows? Maybe we will discover the voice that burns bright for the future.

CSC is committed to working with both new and established playwrights over the

course of this initiative, nurturing new talent and amplifying diverse Cincinnati voices, all while meeting the evolving interests and needs of audiences in Greater Cincinnati and beyond. Do other classical theatres commission new plays?

Absolutely. Classical theatre institutions around the globe have committed to new play development, including the Royal Shakespeare Company (UK), the Stratford Festival (Canada), Oregon Shakespeare Festival (USA), Chicago Shakespeare Festival (USA), and the American Shakespeare Center (USA). These institutions represent the giants of our classical theatre institutions and we are honored and excited to follow in their footsteps.

You’ve even seen several of them on our stage! These include Robert Schenkkan’s All the Way (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), David Ives’ A Flea in her Ear (Chicago Shakespeare), Dangerous Liaisons by Christopher Hampton (Royal Shakespeare Company), and Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus by Jim Helsinger (Orlando Shakespeare Company).

What do you mean by “commission and develop”?

Unless they are the beneficiary of a grant or under commission by a theatre company, playwrights writing new plays today receive no compensation for their work until their play is fully produced. Thus, the act of “commissioning” a new play from a modern playwright means a theatre company is paying a playwright in advance to write a new play. This is especially essential for the survival and promotion of up-and-coming playwrights, who may not have been previously produced.

So what is “development,” then? When a new play is written, it isn’t actually finished. Similar to how an author writing a novel might solicit feedback from multiple advance readers and editors before publishing the final book, a playwright solicits the feedback of others through a process of development that may include staged readings, periods of rewriting, “workshopping” with actors, directors, and dramaturgs, and even gathering feedback from early audiences who come to hear the play spoken out loud. All of this development eventually results in final draft of the play script, ready to be published and produced.

How can I help?

If you are passionate about discovering and supporting new voices in classical

theatre, please consider making a gift to our New Play Development Fund. By investing in the creation of compelling new works, you are championing the stories from new and established artists here in Cincinnati and around the world. Together we are amplifying the voices of emerging playwrights, shining a spotlight on stories not yet told.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s first five new play commissions are made possible by a gift from The McElroy Family. We are forever grateful for their support.

Support for commissioning and development of new plays also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and the more than 1,700 ArtsWave Pride members who give generously to the ArtsWave Community Campaign.
