There is no shortage of dust and orange barrels on the streets of Madeira these days, but we are excited to see years of planning come to life over the course of the year! The re-designed Miami Avenue corridor will soon feature better traffic flow, designated on-street parking, and pedestrian-safe sidewalks and crosswalks. Almost as soon as Miami Avenue starts to wrap up, the re-development of Camargo Road will be taking center stage, with similar streetscape upgrades, walkability, and, of course, a new coat of blacktop.

Construction is never fun, especially when it involves replacing century-old waterlines, but we’re confi dent the end result will make it worth the wait as Madeira becomes an even more desirable destination for residents and shoppers alike!

With all the detours these days you may have missed several new exciting developments in our Camargo Road business district. Bailey Family Catering relocated to Madeira, and Central Bark dog boarding and daycare officially opened its doors in late 2023. You may have also noticed some new signage near Sunshine Cleaners as the Auer Design Hause redevelops the old Camargo Auto Service. Over on Laurel, Madeira has welcomed Leah Miller and her team at Connections Therapy & Wellness to the corner of Laurel and Euclid.

Discover Milestone Anniversaries

It’s no secret that running a small business takes time, commitment, and a dedicated passion. Achieving years of success is always worthy of recognition, but doing it for decades is cause for celebration!

This year marks the 50th anniversary for Gilson’s Engraving & Elegant Gifts in Miami Avenue. Their business started with co-owner Tony Gilson hand-engraving in Downtown Cincinnati. It eventually joined the expanding Kenwood Towne Centre before “coming home” to Madeira in 2008. Over the past fi ve decades, they’ve also expanded their off erings. While hand-engraving is still available (and still done by Tony himself!) the evolution of laser engraving allows them to engrave any gift you can imagine along with corporate awards, plaques, and gifts for some of the largest corporations across the country.

Just up the road on Laurel, Megan Sulfsted and the team at Camargo Trading Company celebrate their silver anniversary! Camargo Trading is recognized as one of Cincinnati’s premier specialty boutiques and a

CONSTRUCTION ON MIAMI AVENUE

Exploring Madeira

Incorporated in 1910, Madeira was originally developed to sit along the busy rail line running between Cincinnati and West Virginia. Today, it maintains that same small town feel, even though big-city amenities are just minutes away. Downtown Cincinnati is a quick, 12-mile trip down Interstate 71 (or use Metro’s bus service), but you’ll quickly find everything you and your family need sits within Madeira’s city limits.

Easily accessible from nearly every corner of Madeira, the central business district is perfect for a stroll, with wide sidewalks and tree-lined streets. Here, between the main arteries of Madeira, you’ll discover more than 150 retail and service businesses, from jewelers and bookstores to charming boutiques and gift shops (plus plenty of places to grab a coffee or a bite to eat). Want to learn more about Madeira’s past? The Madeira Historical Society, located inside the Miller House, a 1922 Sears catalog home, can help.

Elizabeth Miller and her husband Bruce bought the house in 1948. 50 years later, Elizabeth willed the home to the historical society. Six years after that, it opened to the public as a museum.

In addition to a library, rooms with artifacts from all periods of Madeira history, and a B&O railroad display, the kitchen has been restored to what it might have looked like in 1922.

What’s New in Madeira

There’s always something new happening here, and this year is no exception. While there’s plenty of construction ongoing, there are a number of new businesses are making Madeira their home.

Professional musician Sean McGary recently moved The Music Salon, where he offers lessons, to Miami Avenue. He’s also added instrument and gear sales to his repertoire. If cooking for your family has you singing the blues, the dinner club from Bailey Family Catering, which relocated to Madeira last year, can help. It makes weeknight meals easy with online ordering of chef-favorite dishes.

Leah Miller and her team at Connections Therapy & Wellness now provide counseling for couples, individuals, and families from their space at the corner of Laurel and Euclid. Mother-daughter team Amy Kathleen Devine and Jordan Lutz are revamping the old Camargo Auto Service into a new home for interior design firm Auer Design Hause. And late in 2023, Central Bark opened on Camargo Road, offering boarding, day care, and grooming services for local doggos.

We’re sure there will be more changes on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of 2024 holds for Madeira.

Staying Power

More than two dozen Madeira businesses have been serving our community for more than 25 years, and this year marks significant milestones for two long-time Madeira mainstays. Specialty boutique Camargo Trading Company has been outfitting Madiera for 25 years. Gilson’s Engraving & Elegant Gifts has provided personalized keepsakes for 50 years.

McDonald Commons Is Back!

After a $13.4 million upgrade, the city’s largest park is back and better than ever! In May, the Welcome Back Bash reintroduced the community to the expanded park and its slew of new amenities.

The sports fields got new drainage and a redesigned layout, allowing more spots for soccer and baseball. Portions of the fields are natural turf, and portions are field turf. A south restroom near the multi-use trail is a new addition.

Also new to the park are two tennis and six pickleball courts that are multi-use. Those courts are located conveniently near parking and the new four-season community room that has a canopy and plenty of outdoor gathering space. The new event lawn is just nearby, ready for summer events, and speaking of summer events, there’s an expanded space for the farmers’ market.

The playground has been expanded, and once the equipment arrives, it will be ADA-compliant so everyone will have a chance to play. Sustainable plantings throughout mix with existing greenspace to create a welcoming, vibrant center for gathering, play, and connection.

Madeira Parks

Sellman Park

With lighted tennis courts, a baseball diamond, sand volleyball courts, a soccer field, and basketball courts, and a prime location right behind Madeira Middle School, this 10-acre park is a family favorite for good reason. Sellman also features playground equipment and a reservable picnic shelter for gatherings.

Nelle V. Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary

Nelle V. Hosbrook, descended from one of Madeira’s first settlers, was an avid nature enthusiast. To preserve her legacy and make sure others could enjoy the two acres of wooded paradise she’d come to know and love, she willed this property to the city. Today, it’s a haven for bird-lovers from all over Greater Cincinnati. It also includes the Madeira StoryTrail, which allows families to read and enjoy a picture book as they stroll.

Pocket Park

Crews from Green Living by Design helped create this pocket park at Euclid and Camargo in late 2023. Native plants and a permeable crushed stone walking path have updated this corner following construction in the area.

Madeira City Schools

Over the last 100-plus years, the Madeira City School District has consistently ranked among the top districts in the state and the nation for academic performance and preparing students for success in the future. On the most recent state report card, Madeira was one of only eight districts in the state of Ohio to receive an overall rating of five stars, as well as the only district in Southwest Ohio that received five stars in all categories: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation, and Early Literacy.

The 2023–2024 school year brought a new configuration to the district to address growing enrollment. An addition expanded Madeira Elementary

School’s footprint as it became a K–5 school with a dozen classrooms, media and maker spaces, and a special STEAM lab. Madeira Middle School now houses grades 6–8, and Madeira High School, grades 9–12.

The volunteer-run Madeira Schools Foundation provides students and faculty with the resources and opportunities they need to excel. Founded in 1984, this enthusiastic group of parents and community members has raised millions for everything from scholarships and computers to athletic facilities.
