MC LYTE
Lyricist, inspirational speaker, DJ, pioneer, icon, veteran and entrepreneur describe one of the most prolific and well-respected female Hip Hop artists of all time: MC Lyte. A pioneer in the industry, she opened the door for future female Hip Hop artists by daring to do what had never been done while doing something she loved. MC Lyte is the first rap artist ever to perform at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall, the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single, the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy and in 2006, MC Lyte became the first solo female rapper to be honored/inducted on VH-1’s Hip Hop Honors.
Appearing on the rap scene in 1986 as Boogie Down Productions releasing his first hit single “South Bronx” with his late DJ Scott La Rock, KRS “The One” made it clear that Hip Hop was going to have to take itself a lot more seriously than simply being a music genre. KRS, an acronym for “Knowledge Reigning Supreme”, has been called the “conscience of Hip Hop” ( Rolling Stone ), “the greatest live emcee ever” ( The Source ), the “spokesperson for Hip Hop” ( Wall Street Journal ), “master teacher” (Zulu Nation) and the “son of Hip Hop” (Kool DJ Herc). With 20 published albums to his credit and his numerous appearances with other artists, KRS-One is believed to have written the most rhymes in Hip Hop’s history.
THURSDAY
EPMD
Though EPMD’s hardcore style influenced the urban-oriented gangsta ‘90s, Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith were both raised in the Long Island suburb of Brentwood. They moved into rap separately but came together in 1987 at which time they named themselves EPMD, short for “Erick and Parrish Making Dollars”—they recorded their debut, “It’s My Thing,” in three hours. Propelled by several strong singles, the album eventually went gold. By 1992, they presided over an extended family dubbed the Hit Squad. The rappers pursued their own projects through the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Nevertheless, they also found time to continue performing together as EPMD, and 2008 saw them returning to the studio for We Mean Business .
BLACK SHEEP
Lyricist, artist, MC, there are so many words that can be used to define the creative force that is known as Andres “Dres” Titus. A talented hip hop artist, Dres is known to many as one half of the iconic Hip Hop group Black Sheep. During his high school years in North Carolina, Dres linked up with another New York native William “Mista Lawnge” McLean, to form the group Black Sheep. The group found much success and went on to become the first hip hop group to perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , collaborated with top acts like Vanessa Williams, and in 2008 had their signature song “The Choice is Yours” ranked on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs.

NEW EDITION
With their iconic No. 1 debut album Candy Girl, New Edition hit the music scene running in 1983. Some 40 years ago, NE disrupted the music industry when, in the same year, the album’s title track knocked Michael Jackson’s monster hit “Beat It” out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard “Hot Black Singles” chart. As a result of their hard work and dedication, NE has been honored with several awards and accolades including being inducted into the acclaimed NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, The Soul Train and BET’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as being bestowed with a Star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition, NE holds the record for having the most watched biopic in music history. Originally airing on the BET network, the three-part TV series, The New Edition Story, was seen by more than 29 million unique viewers. Comprised of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, New Edition, since 1983, has remained one of the most influential and trendsetting R&B groups in the world of music.

Over two decades, millions have embraced his music, drawn to his honest lyrics, distinctive voice, and magnetic stage presence. KEM’s incredible transformation from a homeless young man battling addiction to a beloved figure in R&B is evident in the evolution of his music.
COCO JONES
You may have seen Coco Jones on the big screen—she’s been in film and on TV since she was a tween. You also may have seen her on the tiny screen—with nearly 3.5 million TikTok followers, she is dedicated to upping representation for proud, talented, dark-skinned black women. You should also plan to hear her brand of R&B: It’s as soulful as it is relatable, as diary-honest as it is marked by powerful storytelling. And though she’s young, it’s been a long time coming. Ultimately, she wants to use her voice as an instrument for change on a broad scale, a tool for growth on a personal level, and as a method to bring her fans closer to her—and, in turn, inspire growth in them.
EN VOGUE
En Vogue members Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, and Rhona Bennett remind us that great voices and music are always in demand. By the time their debut album, Born to Sing , was released, their impact was unquestionable and their freshman album went nearly double platinum. What followed is an impressive catalogue of hits that yielded seven MTV Music Video Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards, two American Music Awards, a Billboard Award, and Lady of Soul Award and garnered countless Grammy nominations. Weighing in on culturally charged social issues like racism, sexism, prejudice, and world peace; En Vogue proved they could use their voices for change with “Free Your Mind.” Beauty, brains, talent, and style defined them, and continues to elevate them as beacons of female self-empowerment for future generations.
STOKLEY
