PLAYWRIGHT LYNN NOTTAGE IS THE ONLY WOMAN TO HAVE WON the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. She was awarded the prestigious prize for her plays Ruined and Sweat. Her work – which often focuses on the experience of working-class people, particularly those who are Black – has been produced on Broadway, across the United States and throughout the world. Clyde’s is the first play we’ve produced by Lynn Nottage here at the Playhouse.
Clyde’s is a comedy about second chances. We witness a lovable group of ex-cons make a fresh start in a sandwich shop owned by Clyde. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote that “the characters that Nottage creates are vivid and just as enticing as the food, making you want to follow their stories when they leave the stage. This show is raucous, bawdy and full of surprises.”
I’m thrilled to welcome back Timothy Douglas to direct Clyde’s. He has a long Playhouse history having directed The Trip to Bountiful (2013), Clybourne Park (2014), Safe House (2014), Buzzer (2015), Mothers and Sons (2016), Jitney (2016) and most recently, Two Trains Running (2019).
In the Rosenthal Shelterhouse, we have another comedy, and it will run through the holidays. Late Nite Catechism is the longest running show in Chicago theatre history. It has entertained millions of people across the country and around the world with its charming performer, incisive wit and fun audience participation. Like previous presentations by The Second City and the Reduced Shakespeare Company, it is a lovingly irreverent evening of stand-up comedy and improvisational theatre. Whether you grew up Catholic or not, this heartfelt romp will be a guaranteed evening of fun.
And speaking of the holidays, everyone at the Playhouse is hard at work to bring our brand-new production of A Christmas Carol to life on stage for you. We can’t wait to share the holiday story you love in spectacular fashion with a production specially designed for Moe and Jack’s Place –The Rouse Theatre.
I’ll see you at the theatre! Cheers!

Clyde’s
PLAYWRIGHT PROFILE: LYNN NOTTAGE
BY RUSSELL FLORENCE JR.Lynn Nottage, the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama two times (Ruined, Sweat), continues to be an influential, in-demand voice for exploring race, class and culture in America. In her sandwich shop comedy Clyde’s, set inside a truck stop diner, she uses the lives of the formerly incarcerated to paint a relevant portrait of people desiring a second chance through purpose and meaning.
Last year, American Theatre magazine conducted a survey which found that Clyde’s would be the most-produced play in the country during the 2022-2023 season, with at least 11 productions. The survey also found there were 24 productions of Nottage’s plays planned that season, tying her with Lauren Gunderson (Silent Sky, The Revolutionists) as the most-produced playwright in America.
Spotlighted in The New York Times regarding Clyde’s, Nottage said, “Clyde’s is a play about people trapped in a liminal space. It is also about community, healing, creativity, mindfulness and forgiveness.” Set in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Clyde’s also shares social commentary similarities with the
aforementioned Sweat, a poignant, multiracial look at blue-collar industrial workers in Reading (also in Berks County) facing the end of their livelihoods as their factory jobs disappear. Both of these plays take place in the same universe, remaining in conversation with each other and with audiences today.
Timothy Douglas, director of the Playhouse production of Clyde’s, notably sees a connection between Nottage and legendary playwright Eugene O’Neill. “While pondering how Sweat and Clyde’s navigate the same world of Lynn Nottage’s tales of a disenfranchised America, I can’t help but ruminate upon the theatrical parallel of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘sister’ plays Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Ah, Wilderness!, even though his plays decidedly serve as a meditation on a more economically and culturally privileged America,” Douglas explained. “Even still, I do see a compelling playwriting parallel between Sweat and Long Day’s Journey – both being the bleaker and more tragic offerings, while Clyde’s and Wilderness! offer glimpses into those same respective worlds while undeniably infusing them with hope and potentially achievable
goals. It makes me wonder if even the most confident and celebrated of playwrights can allow their tragic plays to exist in the world without balancing them out with their more redemptive counterparts – as if a personal, moral imperative.”
Nottage is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and was included in Time magazine’s 2019 list of the 100 Most Influential People. Her accomplished, predominately female-driven and Black-themed works vary in nuance, setting and style. Her plays encompass the journey of women trying to survive in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (Ruined), a lonely Black seamstress attempting to find love in early 20th century New York (Intimate Apparel) and a Hollywood satire (By the Way, Meet Vera Stark).
Most recently, she wrote the libretto for an opera adaptation of Intimate Apparel
featuring a score by musical theatre avantgarde composer Ricky Ian Gordon, and her Tony-nominated libretto for MJ – The Musical spoke to a new generation of theatergoers in its reexamination of the life, career and music of pop icon Michael Jackson. Her upcoming projects include writing the libretto for a musical version of the 1933 Fannie Hurst novel and subsequent 1959 Academy Award-nominated film Imitation of Life featuring a score by John Legend.
At the core of her playwrighting is a fundamental mission to tell universal stories through a truthful lens of diversity, familiarity and complexity. As Nottage said about Clyde’s in an interview with NPR, “A sandwich is very simple, but you can assemble it in such a way that make those flavor combinations quite complicated. And I like to think of that as a metaphor for what we do as artists.”

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples who were affected most by the Doctrine of Discovery* and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand, and on which the city of Cincinnati was built.
*The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.
