A NOTE FROM JOANIE SCHULTZ WE ARE THRILLED TO LAUNCH 2024 WITH THE WORLD PREMIERE OF a new adaptation of Dracula! Presented by our fabulous Leading Ladies, Dracula brings the most famous vampire story of all time back to life onstage in Moe and Jack’s Place — The Rouse Theatre. I am honored to have worked on this script and to co-direct with Vanessa Severo, who wrote and performed Frida…A Self Portrait, and to serve as Associate Artistic Director at a theatre that nurtures the artistic process needed to develop and premiere a brand-new play. One of the things I love about theatre is that we have the opportunity to come together over stories that we tell and retell. In 1897, when Bram Stoker published Dracula, he had no way of knowing how his story would become part of our culture, told and retold over and over in different ways — many of them in live theatre. New versions of old stories are what make theatre a living artform, one that is constantly pulling from our past but is also speaking in the present tense — I hope you will see that in this new Dracula. We dug deep into Stoker’s original text and the multitude of adaptations since. What we found was that these characters are so alive and remain relatable. Each of them feels trapped by society in some way and has a secret or a vice that allows them to release the pressure or express their truth. While we don’t live in the restrictive society of Stoker’s Victorian England — or even 1919, where we have set our story — the tension of living as part of a community while also needing to honor your own individuality is one that continues today. We hope that you’ll also join us for the rest of our season. We have some incredible upcoming work including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Stew by Zora Howard in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. It is a beautiful and funny play about three generations of Black women and what connects them. And keep an eye out for the announcement of our exciting 2024-25 season coming soon! See you at the theatre!

Joanie Schultz Associate Artistic Director

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples who were affected most by the Doctrine of Discovery* and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand, and on which the city of Cincinnati was built. *The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and

promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.

DRACULA WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH VAMPIRES? BY TATIANA GODFREY What’s the deal with vampires? From the Gothic landscapes of Western literature, epitomized by Bram Stoker’s iconic character Dracula, to the beasts of contemporary imagination, perfectly embodied by the rippling, glistening creatures from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, the myth of the vampire has left an indelible mark on the human imagination. Across centuries and civilizations, the allure of vampires has persisted, evolving through the lenses of myth, literature and popular culture. The legacy of the vampire endures not merely as a relic of the past, but as a mirror reflecting humanity’s perpetual fascination with the mysterious and the forbidden. But why has society continued to return to this creature of the night? First, they’re sexy. Vampires evoke our innermost secret desires. They have an otherworldly charismatic charm; their heightened senses imply a hedonistic sensuality; their need for blood makes their connection to humanity necessarily intimate: The vampire is widely held to be an erotic figure. The human/

vampire tensions in True Blood, Interview with the Vampire, or even Buffy the Vampire Slayer, drive audiences to question their relationship to blood, dominance, submission, pain, lust, and desiring the undesirable. Of course, casting beautiful people like Alexander Skarsgård, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, and James Marsters and David Boreanaz, respectively, doesn’t hurt.

DRACULA her first human kill, fears betraying her family; Lydia is having a hard time putting food (that is not human) on the table; Reginald struggles to be liked and fit in. These vampires wrestle with their humanity just as much as their human counterparts, and audiences empathize with these creatures because they embody the eternal human tension between our innate impulses and our conscious choices. For these creatures whose powers allow them to do almost anything, it’s their choices that then define who they are, exploring with audiences the concepts of agency, mortality, and the enduring struggle for autonomy.

Second, they’re immortal. With their immortal existence ensured by the drinking of human blood, vampires amplify societal anxiety around death and dying. For this creature, the boundary between life and death is blurred, challenging the inevitability of mortality. What would you do if you could live forever? What would you create and destroy given an eternity? Who would you love and who would you kill in a thousand-million lifetimes? Director of the 2014 film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night offers that “A vampire is many things: a serial killer, a romantic, a historian, a drug addict, they’re all these things in one.” Vicariously through the vampire, we become these things, too, and experience the infinite possibilities of life. Finally, vampires could eat us, but sometimes choose not to. Contemporary renderings of the vampire encapsulate the essence of what it means to have free will. These beings are built to be predators, and humans their prey. Yet, vampires like Juliette in Netflix’s First Kill, Lydia from Claire Kohda’s Woman, Eating, or Reginald in Syfy’s Reginald the Vampire struggle in very human ways. Juliette, worried about

The exploration of forbidden desires, the allure of immortality, and the symbolic representation of our collective existential dread all contribute to the enduring appeal of vampires. The enigmatic charm of vampires lies not only in their supernatural traits, but in the metaphorical depth they bring to stories, inviting audiences to contemplate the boundaries of morality, the choices that define us, and the timeless allure of the mysterious and the supernatural.
