A CHRISTMAS CAROL STAGE MANAGER’S NOTES BY ANDREA L. SHELL My husband Scott fondly refers to A Christmas Carol as “the beast that we know,” and it is. It’s the all-consuming process that eats my life for two months each year. As a production, it’s busy and daunting and filled with spectacle and understudy coverage plans and stress and fatigue. But, more than that, it’s my home and my heart, my center and my joy. It’s the production where I grew up.
delighting as Scrooge looks around the room to see which child is going to answer shouts as the new George, guffawing as Greg Procaccino (our dearest Marley/Old Joe) gets so invested in those around him that he forgets his next line. I’ve calmed 19 opening nights’ worth of anxious nerves and said bittersweet good-byes to 19 amazing companies at closing-night toasts.
I was first introduced to the Playhouse’s A Christmas Carol in 2000 when I was allowed to observe Production Stage Manager Bruce E. Coyle call the show as part of my undergraduate honors thesis project. I was mesmerized by his complete mastery of the script and by his artful navigation of the cues.
And, in between those benchmarks, I’ve been lucky enough to be here for the day-to-day happenings of the show — the Secret Santa reveals, color day photos (earth tones is always my favorite), meals in the green room, collective screams for the Marley reveal at student matinees, preshow tours, automation malfunctions, and lobby carols (we’ve collected over $200,000 since 2006 alone).
That was when I understood that a stage manager is the final character of the play — their voice, timing, experience, and intuition complete the director’s vision. That was also when I knew I desperately wanted to work at the Playhouse. Five months later, I was hired as a stage management intern, and after some serious lobbying on my part, I got to work on Carol in my second season. Since then, I’ve spent 19 of my 21 Christmases working on the show. I’ve experienced the love and excitement of 19 first rehearsals and have witnessed all the familiar hugs of actors returning after ten months apart and the joyous trepidation of initial introductions. I’ve giggled and gasped through 19 first read-throughs of the play,

But, of all those beautiful moments, of all those countless shared experiences, the ones I hold dearest are the joys so consistent they’ve become personal truths. Each year, I’m blessed to glance out my booth window to see generations of families enjoying this important story of hope, compassion, and shared humanity. I get to experience new company members breathing fresh life into our process while trusting the veterans to hold the production steady. And, each performance, I get to join in Scrooge’s final promise: “I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The spirits of all three will strive within me.” I am the conductor of the beautiful symphony that is the carol we all sing together. So, as the lights dim and the first chord rings out at today’s performance, please join me and the rest of the A Christmas Carol family as we whisper, “Make it sing.”

He is currently a writer and educator. As an actor, Howard acknowledges “that the stage has had a narrow escape.” His adaptation of A Christmas Carol for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park was heavily influenced by the 1951 movie starring Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. In addition to adapting the story for the stage, Howard directed the first two productions at the Playhouse. The first production was okay, but the script clearly needed more work. It was former Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Ed Stern who coached Howard through a series of revisions that allowed Scrooge to be a participant in the action rather than a mere observer. Michael Evan Haney, who was the production’s first-ever Bob Cratchit, eventually took over directing the work and has fashioned it into an endearing holiday classic. MICHAEL EVAN HANEY (DIRECTOR) Michael served as Associate Artistic Director for the Playhouse from 2002 to 2013. His productions here include Summerland, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, A Delicate Ship, Double Indemnity, Speaking in Tongues, The Understudy, The History of Invulnerability, Blackbird, Crime and Punishment, The Clean House, A Christmas Carol (1993-2018), Hiding Behind Comets and The Syringa Tree, among many others. Off-Broadway, he directed Around the World in 80 Days at the Irish Repertory Theatre. International credits include the English Theatres of Vienna and Frankfurt. Regional productions include Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days (Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis); All My Sons (Alabama Shakespeare Festival); The Drawer Boy (Actors Theatre of Louisville); Freud’s Last Session and Souvenir, for which he earned a Kevin Kline Award for direction (The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis); The Humans, Grounded, An Iliad, Tribes and others (Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati); and Scotland Road (Pacific Resident Theatre, Drama-Logue Award for direction). As artistic director of the Allenberry Playhouse, Michael directed more than 30 plays, including Bus Stop, Shirley Valentine, Love Letters (with Shirley Jones) and The Secret Garden. Michael began his career as an actor appearing on Broadway, off-Broadway and at many regional theatres: Arena Stage (including their 1973 historic tour of the Soviet Union of Our Town), 20 | 2021–2022

NEED YOUR LOVE PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY KJ SANCHEZ Three years ago, we premiered my play Cincinnati King right here in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday and then other times, given what we have all gone through (and are still going through), it feels like many lifetimes ago. Cincinnati King was about the founding of King Records, which featured the lives of Syd Nathan, founder of King Records, the seminal King studio drummer and local icon Philip Paul and Little Willie John, one of King Records’ brightest stars. During lockdown I kept thinking about these people, and in particular, I kept thinking about Little Willie John. Richard Huntley (our Music Director and the drummer you will see tonight, who also happens to be my husband) and I
kept listening to his music. There was many a rough day which was made better by listening to Little Willie John’s records. His joie de vivre, his take-no-prisoners energy and his indelible spirit gave me something to hold onto, something to cherish, something to lift my spirits. Along with listening to a lot of great music I was also watching — I’m not ashamed to admit it — a lot of Netflix. I love “spin-off” TV shows and movies, which have become a regular practice, especially in the genre of super heroes. So, since Little Willie John was a kind of super-hero for me, I decided to write a spin-off play about his music and his life. Like most spin-offs, some of his story you will recognize, and some of it will be new. Some of the music might be familiar, and some of it has been added, just for Little Willie John. This was a great chance to dive deeper into his catalogue and to immerse ourselves with the music of his childhood as well. I am so grateful to Steve Harper and the Nathan Family, and the great Mr. Philip Paul, for providing the groundwork from which Cincinnati King was built. This time around, I add one more name to that list of people I am forever indebted to: Reverend Dr. Mable John, Willie John’s older sister, who graciously granted me an interview and told me such beautiful stories of her beloved brother Willie. I am honored and overwhelmed that I have the good fortune to share these stories and this exceptional music with you. It’s so good to be back. It’s so, so good to see you. Thank you for spending some time with us and Little Willie John.
