Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), founded in 1913, represents more than 49,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. The Equity emblem is our mark of excellence. www.actorsequity.org

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is proud to be a member of The Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA). For more information visit www.stahome.org. STA was established to provide a forum for the artistic, managerial, educational leadership for theatres primarily involved with the production of the works of William Shakespeare; to discuss issues and methods of work, resources, and information; and to act as an advocate for Shakespearean productions and training.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is a member of the Theatre Communications Group (TCG). TCG is the national organization for theatre, with a membership network of 500+ member theatres and over 250 university, funder, trustee, and business affiliates, and over 7,000 individuals. TCG reaches over 1 million students, audience members, and theatre professionals each year through its programs and services.

The National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest presents Shakespeare in American Communities. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is one of 40 professional theater companies across the nation selected to perform a Shakespeare play with a professional team of actors for middle- and high-schools and conduct related educational activities for students.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is a leader in workplace equity, earning an Ellequate Bronze in 2022. Ellequate-certified employers are leaders in making diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces the norm rather than the exception. Employers that are certified as Leaders In Workplace Equity meet standards of performance and accountability in six key measures of workplace culture, demonstrated by people-first policies, practices, and benefits, as well as employee experience. Ellequate is the nation's leading data-informed employer certification and cohort-based leadership program for intersectional workplace equity.

Stephen Burdman (Director, Debut) founded New York Classical Theatre in 2000 and is the vision behind the creation of Panoramic Theatre. Originally from Los Angeles, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and planned to become a doctor. During college, Stephen auditioned for a production of Hamlet, and discovered his passion for Shakespeare. That experience completely changed the course of his life. Stephen founded NY Classical to give all people the chance to discover classical masterpieces as he did.

Stephen has directed nearly half of Shakespeare canon. To date, he has directed 36 productions for NY Classical. Some of his favorites include: Cymbeline (performed by 7 actors), The Importance of Being Earnest (Two-Ways), Romeo & Juliet (6 actors), The Rivals, The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, The Seagull, A {15-Min!} Christmas Carol, Playing Moliere, Henry V (in The Battery and, via ferry boat, Governors Island), Hamlet, King Lear, Misalliance, Mary Stuart, Scapin, and The Triumph of Love.

Stephen attended the National Theatre Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and later received an MFA in Theatre Directing from the University of California, Irvine. In 1989, he was selected to participate in the first young theatre artist exchange with the (former) Soviet Union and has been a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society since 1994.

Stephen received the 2022 Sidney Berger award from the Shakespeare Theatre Association for outstanding talent and commitment to the works of William Shakespeare. He has also been a panelist with the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation.

He lives in Central Harlem with his wife, Adena, and son, Zeke.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is thrilled to be bringing Cincinnati audiences the worldpremiere of Alice Scovell’s The Rewards of Being Frank, in co-production with New York Classical Theatre. Starting in 2019, CSC established a commitment to commission, develop, and produce new plays that are classical in theme, in source material, or in style, but told by fresh new voices and from new perspectives.

World Premiere

After all, Shakespeare wasn’t always a classic. He started as a young playwright fighting for his voice to be heard. Who is next? How will we discover the next Shakespeare whose work will stand the test of time?

At Cincinnati Shakespeare Company we believe that we have a responsibility to find and nurture those new voices. We should not just be pulling from the classical canon but also contributing to the classical canon. We hope we can be a place where artists of all backgrounds feel that their voices are encouraged and that their work can flourish, all while meeting the evolving interests and needs of audiences in Greater Cincinnati and beyond.

How can I help?

If you are passionate about discovering and supporting new voices in classical theatre, please consider making a gift to our New Play Development Fund. By investing in the creation of compelling new works, you are championing the stories from new and established artists here in Cincinnati and around the world. Together we are amplifying the voices of emerging playwrights, shining a spotlight on stories not yet told.

To learn more, please visit: cincyshakes.com/new-works-fund

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s first five new play commissions are made possible by a gift from The McElroy Family. We are forever grateful for their support.

Support for commissioning and development of new plays also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, and the more than 1,700 ArtsWave Pride members who give generously to the ArtsWave Community Campaign
