A NOTE FROM BLAKE

GREETINGS TO ALL OF YOU IN OUR BRAND NEW SPACE, FEATURING

Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre! If this is your first time here, I give you the warmest welcome. This state-of-the-art facility has been a dream of ours for years, and we’re overjoyed to finally open our doors to you and our community.

Today, we’ll journey back to 1948 through August Wilson’s Seven Guitars. The Rouse Theatre stage transforms into Pittsburgh’s Hill District, an iconic time and place that’s stayed alive through Wilson’s American Century Cycle of plays (read more about them in this program, page 12). There’s a reason so many of Wilson’s plays take place here: the Hill District is his home, both real in memory and imaginative in story. When he takes us there, we feel the different rhythms of the community, echoing out even further to embody the Black American experience at large. Through Wilson’s writing, enlivened by the performers who fill the space with his words, we become immersed in the many facets of this world as the story unfolds.

Also, please join me in welcoming Director Ron OJ Parson, who helms this production of Seven Guitars and makes his Playhouse debut. An expert on Wilson, Ron has directed around 30 of his works. He tells us in our latest issue of Prologue that, when approaching Wilson’s plays, he delves into the spirituality and love that persist through the story. These two elements — together with Wilson’s signature monologues and presence of live blues on stage — elevate the world of the play to create a remarkable theatrical experience.

I hope you enjoy the many talents of all the artists on stage today. I also hope you enjoy this new space and its many features. They were built to suit your comfort and accommodations. Think of our lobby as a gathering space — I encourage you to connect with others and share your personal insights about the art on our stages. Take in the views of our beautiful Eden Park setting. Enjoy refreshments from Al’s Bar and concessions from The Delish Dish. Make yourself at home here.

Thank you for joining us today. Enjoy the show!

AUGUST WILSON’S SEVEN GUITARS

AMERICA THROUGH THE LENS OF AUGUST WILSON

Seven Guitars is one of 10 August Wilson plays that comprise his American Century Cycle. Written over his 30-plus year career, this series of 10 plays documents, celebrates and ruminates on Black American life through the 20th century. Each set in a different decade, the plays of the American Century Cycle follow the journey of Black Americans through poverty, racism, hope and the American Dream.

Nine of the plays take place in Wilson’s hometown of Pittsburgh, with the exception being Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which takes place in Chicago. Although each story stands alone, there are characters that reappear across plays. Many characters from Seven Guitars also appear in King Hedley II. The timeline below documents each play in the American Century Cycle, the year it was written and the year in which it’s set.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples who were affected most by the Doctrine of Discovery* and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand, and on which the city of Cincinnati was built.

*The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.

Accessible parking for those with disabilities is located in the Playhouse parking garage. Parking for persons with disabilities is limited and must be reserved and paid for in advance. All vehicles using these spaces must display a valid disability placard.

PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS

The Ohio Revised Code (R.C. 2923.126) has established the privilege of carrying a concealed handgun to Ohio citizens who have obtained the proper license. The same law explicitly grants private employers in the state the right to prohibit their employees and visitors from possessing firearms on the employer’s premises. With this notification the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is informing you that it prohibits weapons of any kind on its premises, and reserves the right to search persons, parcels and vehicles on the same. This policy applies to all employees, patrons and visitors to the facility.

RESTROOMS AND TELEPHONES

There are four types of restrooms: women’s, men’s, all-gender and family. One of each type is available on each level. Restrooms are all wheelchair-accessible.

SMOKING/VAPING

Smoking/vaping is prohibited in the entire theatre complex.

ORIGIN STORY

ROSENTHAL SHELTERHOUSE THEATRE

MAY 20 – JUNE 25, 2023

WORLD PREMIERE!

In this funny and heartfelt world premiere comedy, Margaret finds herself in a quarter-life crisis while working two jobs to pay down her debt. She wades through banal office triviality at The Services Corporation by day and trudges through the slow-moving graveyard shift at The Burg’s drive-thru by night. Margaret yearns to belong somewhere, and so do the coworkers and customers she interacts with every day. With delightfully unexpected turns and an ensemble of endearing characters, Origin Story is a touching tale about life’s biggest questions and the surprising ways we find the answers.

MOE AND JACK’S PLACE – THE ROUSE THEATRE

JUNE 3 – 25, 2023

WORLD PREMIERE!

One of the greatest Westerns of all time finds new life on the stage! Shane, a mysterious ex-gunfighter, is a man with a dangerous past. Yet, the Starrett family finds kinship with him, and Shane helps protect their Wyoming farm in 1889. Their story sheds new light on the allure, myths and values of the Wild West — a chapter in history that still has many tales to tell. Based on the classic novel by Jack Schaefer, this world premiere by acclaimed playwright Karen Zacarías brings an exciting, fresh perspective to an extraordinary American genre.
