WELCOME
Welcome to your “new view” of the
Western & Southern Open! It’s impossible this year—no matter where you are on the 20 acres of the Lindner Family Tennis Center—not to notice an updated skyline from every vantage point. That “new view” comes courtesy of the 104-foot South Building looming large over Center Court, the latest addition to our ever-expanding facility. The building was constructed with you, the fans, in mind. Each level boasts comfort elements like air-conditioning, concessions, and restrooms. Behind the glass just above court level sits first-of-its-kind (in all of tennis) indoor air-conditioned box seats. And the building is uniquely positioned between our two biggest courts, making it convenient for fans to keep up on two big matches at the same time. Beyond the construction, your “new view” continues on the court. Last year welcomed first-time W&S Open champions Grigor Dimitrov and Garbiñe Muguruza into our legendpacked alumni group of stars who have all hoisted the cup here in Cincinnati. As you watch across the match and practice courts, you’ll quickly realize that the next generation of ATP World Tour and WTA stars have arrived and are here to stay. The big names who have won countless majors are also in town and are reluctant to cede the spotlight too quickly. It is truly a golden period for fans of tennis. The Western & Southern Open is the largest international sporting event in the Midwest, and it’s one of the biggest tennis events in the entire world. Each year we aim to make the event better on our quest to become the best professional tennis event on the planet—for fans, players, and anyone who walks through our gates. We are excited to host you for a week of unbelievable tennis.
Enjoy!
Andre Silva Tournament Director, Western & Southern Open

Welcome from the
United States Tennis Association On behalf of the United States Tennis Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Western & Southern Open. This tournament is annually one of the most popular events on both the men’s and women’s pro tours, as it is one of only five tournaments in the world that feature an ATP Masters 1000 men’s event and a WTA Premier 5 women’s event during the same week. With so much talent between the lines, and so many fan-friendly activities outside the lines, the Western & Southern Open is one of our sport’s top events. The Western & Southern Open is this country’s oldest professional tennis tournament still held in its original city. Since its inception in 1899, it has provided a stage for many of the greatest players in the history of our sport, and the list of those who have won here includes some of our game’s most famous names. But even at a tournament so rich in history, there are still plenty of exciting “fi rsts” that happen here every year. Last year, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov captured his first career ATP Masters 1000 title at the Western & Southern Open, and Garbiñe Muguruza became the first Spanish champion in the history of this event. And just as important to this tournament’s long-running success as its lengthy list of outstanding champions are the legions of passionate fans who turn out each year to support it. Tennis fans from all 50 states and from more than 30 countries have attended the Western & Southern Open. In 2017, nearly 200,000 fans passed through the turnstiles here, as the tournament sold out 14 of its 16 sessions. This is a tournament that brings together great players, a world-class venue, and a worldwide fan base—and that all adds up to an unbeatable experience. This year, with the completion of the new South Building as part of an impressive $25 million refurbishment of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, that experience figures to be even more incredible. The Western & Southern Open also is an important stop on the U.S. Open Series, and that’s why all of us at the USTA are thrilled to be a partner in continuing to enhance this world-class event. And for all the on-court thrills it provides, it’s important also to note that this tournament has become a model for giving back to the community, contributing nearly $10 million to local charities, including the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Barrett Cancer Center, and Tennis for City Youth. I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting on this year’s Western & Southern Open, especially the legion of dedicated volunteers who work so hard to ensure that this event continues to thrill and delight tennis fans from all over the world.
Have a great time and enjoy the Western & Southern Open! Katrina M. Adams USTA Chairman of the Board, CEO, and President

We have developed a reputation for being a family-friendly city that is committed to the continued development of our culture of wellness and the success of our business community. Over the last decade, Mason has become home to international businesses, ambitious entrepreneurs, and growing families. Currently, Procter & Gamble is in the midst of a $350 million investment that will make its Mason location the largest R&D center in its entire portfolio of operations. And we are very proud of our tennis partners’ $25 million invested into the Lindner Family Tennis Center, the new South Building opening this year. The tournament is a big part of our success story as it brings more than 200,000 fans to Mason each year to watch the world’s top professional men and women tennis athletes. The economic impact and global recognition for Mason and the region is significant. The event is just part of the repertoire of activities, programs, and venues that add to the quality of life for our residents and businesses. For 10 days, Mason is on the world stage for one of the most prestigious events in tennis—the Western & Southern Open. This year, help us celebrate the tournament’s 40th anniversary in Mason! The event is especially poignant as we say farewell to Elaine Bruening, CEO of the Western & Southern Open, who has been at the foundation of the tournament’s evolution. Thank you, Elaine. Your dedication to the tournament, your passion for tennis, and your compassion for those who helped make the vision a reality is more than visible with the legacy you leave behind. The anniversary celebration brings with it the opportunity for strengthening relationships and forging a renewed vision for growing the tournament and creating even stronger partnerships that will continue to invest and expand Mason’s entertainment corridor. I invite you to explore our neighborhoods, parks, golf courses, community center, schools, and business community. Welcome from the
ATP World Tour Welcome to the 2018 ATP World Tour, and to the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati is one of just nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments on the Tour, featuring the world’s greatest athletes competing for one of the most coveted titles in the sport, as well as 1000 ATP Rankings points on offer to the winner. The ATP World Tour is one of a few truly global sports properties, featuring 64 tournaments in 31 countries across five continents, with the Top 100 players hailing from approximately 40 countries. Each tournament has its unique characteristics and the Western & Southern Open has become renowned for its phenomenal crowds and friendly atmosphere, providing one of the key anchors to the Tour’s North American summer hard court swing. We hope you enjoy the drama that unfolds on court throughout the tournament. We’re fortunate to be witnessing one of the most exciting eras in the history of the sport, with global established superstars at the top of the game, as well as an incredibly talented group of #NextGenATP players who are making huge strides up the rankings in the early stages of their careers. I would like to thank Tournament Director Andre Silva and his dedicated team for making the Western & Southern Open the highly successful event it is today. I would also like to recognize Western & Southern’s loyal support of this tournament as title sponsor for a 17th consecutive year. The Tour is enjoying unprecedented success, with a record 4.5 million fans attending ATP World Tour events last year, and more than 995 million fans tuning in on television and online. The depth of talent on the ATP World Tour is simply phenomenal, and it is attracting record audiences on site, on television, and online, thanks to an incredible generation of players as well as the strength of our global platform of tournaments. The 2018 season culminates at the prestigious season-ending Nitto ATP Finals at The O2 in London, where only the top eight players of the season qualify to compete for the last title of the season at the biggest indoor tennis tournament in the world. We thank you for your support and invite you to follow us all season long at ATPWorldTour.com.

OFF THE COURT
Q: What was the impact of the NJTL on those players? A: It helped them get the basics, and then if they wanted to follow up, they could take lessons. Many of them did…. You have to be a good athlete, but a lot of the kids didn’t get a chance. You have to be taught; you can’t go out and just pick up a racquet. But to be a part of the country club, you have to have money. Q: What makes the Western & Southern Open special? A: Seeing a lot of the players who have come to this tournament who want to prepare for the US Open in September. And you know Cincinnati; anytime the city puts itself behind anything it is always successful. You’ve got good business support and support from the movers and shakers of the city. Q: How do you feel tennis has shaped your life? A: If it weren’t for tennis, I don’t know where I’d be. It’s just been good to travel and to play. Q: And you were friends with Arthur Ashe, Jr.? A: My friendship with Arthur Ashe, Jr., was long. I would travel with him to some of the tournaments and watch him play. I don’t know what I’d do without him and the friendship we developed. He was a good player and a good person. He was an international, a gentleman, a scholar. I am indebted to him in many ways. Q: What marked the start of your journey with local tennis? A: I’m from Cincinnati. I moved, and I’ve been out [in Los Angeles] since about 1976. I was involved in Cincinnati with the Walnut Hills Tennis Club and the American Tennis Association, which was the organization we had before blacks could join the United States Lawn Tennis Association [now the United States Tennis Association]. Arthur [Ashe, Jr.,] went through it, and I went through it…. It’s a lot of history that I went through not only as a player but as a man. Q: How did you become involved with youth tennis? A: The National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) was started by Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sheridan Snyder, and Charlie Pasarell…I became the chairman of the Cincinnati chapter…. It was to get more kids to play tennis without going to the country clubs. They had chapters all over the country. The first three years (1972–1974)…my team in Mt. Airy won the championship.
Q: What about the game kept your love for it alive all these years? A: I think that people know me from tennis, and they have opened up to me in tennis. I just don’t know any other game you can play forever. You can play as long as no, longer than—team sports like basketball and football, which you can’t play forever. It’s a gentlemen and ladies game. It’s a good sport. Q: Do you still get out on the court? A: Yep, I’m still serving volleys. I don’t have any knee problems. I still play, and I will tell you this: The game has been good.

NAOMI OSAKA
The French Open and Wimbledon champion is known for her elegance and poise on court. Fashion editors have noticed—this spring, the statuesque Spaniard appeared on the cover of Glamour Spain and posted outfits of the day on Instagram for Vogue Spain. Her Instagram feed reveals that she is comfortable in Prada and Miu Miu jackets, and she packs refined Carolina Herrera and Stella McCartney dresses for tournament parties. Last year, before walking away with the Wimbledon trophy, she strutted into London in a dramatic white blouse with voluminous matador sleeves by Kenzo. Even when she’s off duty in her finest Adidas street wear or a pair of jeans with a timeless tailored blazer, Muguruza looks perfectly pulled together. She once told Vogue that she loves to dress up, and it shows.
The Czech is one of the most unflappable women in the sport, but don’t mistake that stoicism for a lack of things to say. The former No. 1 player in the world is seriously inked up, and not with dainty designs hiding under clothing, either. She got her first tattoo, a Polynesian symbol on her arm, at 15, and then a larger version on her thigh that often peeks out from the hem of her skirt. If you want to tell her apart from her twin Kristýna on the court, look at their left arms. Karolína’s ink is above her elbow, and her sister’s is on her wrist.
The 20-year-old Japanese player—who has grown up in Florida with all the traits of an American teenager—has earned legions of fans for her candid yet shy personality, which was on full display when she won the BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells in March. Endearingly nervous, she giggled through the trophy ceremony and ended it with, “This is probably going to be the worst acceptance speech of all time.” She is more comfortable talking about her gaming habit and has told the media that when she’s home in Florida, she spends as much time playing Overwatch as she does training on the court— about four hours each.

What tennis player doesn’t like soccer? Hardly any. But Thiem takes his futbol fever to another level. He formed his own club, Tennis FC, with fellow tennis players, wearing jerseys the color of a tennis ball. Slovenia also formed a team with ATP athletes and faced off against Tennis FC in the off-season. It may have been for fun, but like the true competitor he is, Thiem took it seriously. The team’s coach was Andreas Herzog, one of the greatest players in the history of Werder Bremen. If you love soccer as much as Thiem does, you know who that is. And now maybe you consider yourself part of Team Thiem.
Fans might consider him the bad boy of tennis, but those inside the sport are more divided—partly because Kyrgios spends much time and effort inspiring young people. A visit to a children’s hospital in France inspired him to create the NK Foundation, which is raising money to build a sports facility and shelter for underprivileged kids. He says it motivates him to play for this goal. Cincinnati fans saw a great example of the Australian’s generosity toward kids. Two years ago, when rain washed out some matches along with his practice session, he invited a few teens standing at the fence to come on court and play mini tennis with him around the puddles. Cue the waterworks.
Fans know the diminutive Slovakian veteran as the queen of the elevator selfie—right hip jutted out, chin turned to the left shoulder, lips slightly pursed. She has also mastered the pose in the gym, from a makeup chair, and in her hotel bathroom. Her followers love to see what she is wearing off the court. It’s often sexy and well accessorized, drawing comparisons to Sarah Jessica Parker for her daring fashion sense, petite figure, and long blonde hair. If she steps out with a bare midriff, the world will know about it.

Your New Favorite Player Is… GENIE BOUCHARD
LAUREN DAVIS
FRANCES TIAFOE
We’re not talking about tennis; in this case, we’re referring to a bet Bouchard lost during Super Bowl 2017. Remember when Atlanta led New England by 25 points in the third quarter? Bouchard tweeted that she knew the Falcons would win. A Patriots fan replied with a wager: If she was wrong, the two would go on a date. She accepted, surely never thinking she’d have to make good. But when the Patriots stormed back and won, she kept her word. Bouchard flew the 20-yearold from Missouri to New York to attend an NBA game. They apparently got along well enough to keep in touch and hang out again at the Super Bowl this year. Totally cool of Bouchard to give a regular guy a shot.
Tennis fans saw Lauren Davis play her guts out (and her toenail off) in a thrilling three-set battle against Simona Halep at this year’s Australian Open. She should know a thing or two about guts: Her father is Dr. William Davis, a cardiologist who popularized the gluten-free diet with his book Wheat Belly, a New York Times No. 1 bestseller in 2012. A slew of media appearances established him as one of the leading evangelists of the lifestyle. Now he has a whole Wheat Belly brand, with multiple cookbooks and an online community. Lauren also avoids gluten, showing you don’t have to carb-load to perform at the top of your game.
Of all the players not actually named “Djoker” (a.k.a. Novak Djokovic), this American young gun has the easiest sense of humor. In Miami this year, he went undercover as a ticket-scanner, chatting up fans as they entered the grounds. “You know who Frances Tiafoe is?” he’d asked. “Yes, I do. I watched him the other day,” one man answered without a hint of recognition. Perhaps that’s why Big Foe, as he’s known, was able to deliver the funniest moment on court last year. During his match at the USTA Pro Circuit’s Sarasota Open, fans and the players picked up on sounds of intimacy carrying from a nearby apartment building. Chuckles rippled through the crowd, but Tiafoe dropped the mic when he shouted, “It can’t be that good!”

A lot of players travel with their furry friends. Collins wins the most slobbery kiss from animal-lovers for saving her dog’s life. Last year, Scout, a Boxer/Jack Russell mix, broke his spine and couldn’t walk. In pain, he needed either a complicated surgery or euthanasia. Danielle opted for surgery. But after six months with little progress, she had to send him to a physical therapist, who told her she might have to buy a pair of wheels to replace his hind legs. Something told Danielle to keep the faith, though. “I really knew deep down that Scout was going to turn it around,” she wrote on Instagram. And miraculously, he did. Shortly after she declined the PT’s advice, Scout took a few steps and continued to get stronger every day. That’s the kind of belief champions are made of.
The Greek newcomer who has jumped more than 150 spots in the rankings since last summer has played electrifying tennis at times during the run. His charisma is off the charts on his personal YouTube channel, featuring high-production-value travelogues about his life on and off the ATP World Tour. (Stef, please film one in Mason!) Tsitsipas takes tennis fans behind the scenes at tournaments. In Morocco, he was amazed to learn that the grounds crew lights a red-clay court on fire to dry the surface, so out came his camera. He avoids sophomoric hijinks other guys his age film for YouTube. The mature young man used one episode to espouse his belief in a promising future with smart cities, flying cars, zero pollution, bionic people, and solar energy.
The rising star from South Korea might want your recommendations. The 22-year-old spends his long hours on airplanes watching American TV shows like Prison Break to learn English. It’s a good thing he’s studying. After last year’s win at the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals for the top-ranked young players and impressive victories over Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open this year, he’s starting to field a lot more questions. With the way he’s playing, Walter White’s “I am the danger!” could become his new catchphrase.

THE SETBACK: a difficult delivery

illiams, the 2014 and 2015 Western & Southern Open champion, has been through just about everything an elite athlete can face. Yet another new challenge presented itself when the 35-year-old became a mother in 2017. She developed a pulmonary embolism after giving birth and had multiple surgeries before leaving the hospital in September. Still, some assumed she would win in Indian Wells this year, her first tournament in 14 months. Instead, she won only two matches combined at Indian Wells and the following tournament, the Miami Open. Training to get back in the game, HBO cameras accompanied her to her coach’s academy in France, and fans got a rare glimpse into her regimen. Williams had to use a stationary bike submerged in a pool and swing her racquet under water. Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou matter-of-factly assessed that she needed to lose more weight to play her best. “I work out all day, every day,” she said in the video, her voice quivering. “I’m not being lazy. That has never been me.” The only thing left to do was to stop breastfeeding. Next, Williams won three matches at the French Open before a pectoral strain forced her to withdraw from the tournament. She had never felt this type of injury, which might have been caused by sudden overuse after her layoff. You have to wonder about other complications Williams dealt with out of the spotlight as she played her way into form for Wimbledon last month, where she lost in the finals to Angelique Kerber. Fans assumed Williams might instantly rule the court again—a reflection of their belief in the champ. But comebacks are never easy, much less automatic—even for the greatest.

BETHANIE MATTEK-SANDS THE SETBACK: a knee blowout
T
he most colorful player in tennis, known for her signature kneesocks and adventurous fashion, put on a brave face immediately after suffering a gruesome knee injury at Wimbledon in 2017. A rupture of the patellar tendon left fans and fellow players in tears as a stretcher carried Mattek-Sands off the court. Within three days, the 32-year-old posted an upbeat photo of herself in a hospital bed with a quote from the poet Rumi: “Try not to resist the changes that come your way. . . . How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?” The injury happened when Mattek-Sands was ruling doubles with her partner, Lucie Safarova. In the 12 months before the injury, she had won an Olympic gold medal with American Jack Sock, as well as the US Open, Australian Open, and French Open with Safarova. At Wimbledon, they were the No. 1–ranked team and going for the “Bucie Slam,” or all four majors in a row. It would have been easy to throw a pity party, but instead she pushed herself. She truly loves the sport and spared no effort or smile in the intense rehab. She was already hitting against a wall with a brace on her leg when fans were still cringing at the replays of her fall. She returned to competition in March, much faster than many people expected. On the first point, she was determined to serve and volley—which she had been doing when she tore her tendon—and pick up right where she had left off.
“ONCE I HAD SUFFERED THE INJURY, I COULDN’T GO BACK AND DO IT OVER AGAIN. I MADE A CHOICE TO CONTROL WHAT I COULD, AND THAT WAS MY ATTITUDE.” — BETHANIE MATTEK-SANDS at Fed Cup in April
VICTORIA AZARENKA THE SETBACK: a custody battle
A
zarenka, a former World No. 1, had her first child in late 2016. When she and baby Leo’s father went to court over custody, Azarenka couldn’t legally leave California with her son. Her choice to stay with him rather than travel to tournaments was understandable, but impossible to fully relate to. What fans knew was that Azarenka was sidelined for nearly two years in the prime of her career. She won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 (as
52 WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN 2018
well as the 2013 Western & Southern Open) but fell to No. 50 in the world in 2015 while struggling with injuries. She bounced back in early 2016 and entered the French Open as No. 5 in the world. She was 25 and appeared to be back where she belonged. Then after an early-round loss, she announced her pregnancy and stopped playing. She gave birth in December, played Wimbledon in 2017, then stopped again after announcing the custody case and returning to California.
Her Instagram feed was filled with smiles as she worked out and played with her towheaded son in the West Coast sunshine. Motherhood had changed her priorities. “I forgot how to focus on myself the day he was born,” she says. She wasn’t sure when she could return to the tour. “I prepared myself as best as possible with the possibility that I might be able to go and compete the following week,” she says. “It has been far from easy. . . but most importantly, I have never lost motivation.” Things looked good when she finally returned to competition this spring. In Miami, her second tournament back, she made a run to the semifinals with wins over top players Madison Keys and Karolína Plíšková. But then she won only four of her next nine matches, going out early at both the French Open and Wimbledon. Practice simply can’t replicate the pressure a player faces in competition. All things considered, Azarenka has a great perspective. “It’s very different in terms of emotional state. It will take me time to heal,” she says. “I will need the time to make sure that I’m okay personally, and it will reflect in my tennis overall.”

PETRA KVITOVÁ THE SETBACK: a knife attack
A
brutal home break-in left the Czech champion with a knife wound to her dominant left hand in the 2016 offseason. All five fingers and tendons were cut. The layers of trauma that surface in the aftermath of an attack began to unfold as Kvitová started rehab, a millimeter of motion at a time. She heard speculation from tennis insiders that her career might be over. It hurt her feelings, she later told the media, because it felt like those people didn’t believe in her (she won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 and led the Czech Republic to five Fed Cup titles). Then, 12 weeks after her emergency surgery, she discovered she was afraid to hold a racquet again. And her fear was confirmed: The most familiar feeling in the world to her, that of the racquet grip on her palm, was gone. Nevertheless, she soldiered through painful therapy and emotional scars and returned to competition in May, a month ahead of schedule. She won the second tournament she played. At the US Open, she equaled her best result by reaching the quarterfinals. Everyone was rooting for Kvitová. Playing with what she considers a new hand and also a newfound joy for the game, she won four tournaments before Wimbledon this year. She is the only player victorious on three different surfaces in 2018. Her ranking went up to No. 8. Kvitová cannot make a complete fist with her left hand or fully move two fingers. But she can still lift a trophy.
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI
THE SETBACK: a ranking slide
W
ozniacki’s “slump” in 2016 would have been a career-best performance for many players. After winning 12 tournaments in 2010 and 2011 combined to reach the WTA Tour World No. 1 ranking, she won only six more in the next five years. Injuries played a part, but analysts also pointed to her passive playing style. Her ranking fell to No. 74 in 2016 while she rehabbed an ankle. A lower ranking means tougher early-round matches, creating a cycle that’s difficult to break. But Wozniacki is a grinder, and her results improved in 2017. She finally won a tournament in her seventh final of the year, then triumphed at the WTA Finals in Singapore, the biggest title of her career. But she also didn’t go beyond the fourth round of a Slam that year, so she went to the Australian Open a few months later as the No. 2 seed, but lacking buzz. The assessment seemed justified when, in the second round, Wozniacki trailed 1–5 in the third set against No. 119 Jana Fett. She eventually won the match. The final against No. 1 Simona Halep was just the kind of long, physical dogfight Halep usually wins, but at the end, it was Wozniacki flinging her racquet into the air and falling to the ground as a first-time Grand Slam champion. The next week, at 27, she returned to World No. 1. Wozniacki hadn’t panicked as doubters mounted. The extended injury break in 2016 recharged her batteries for the slow-andsteady return to the top that began in early 2017. “At one point you’re just like, you know what…it has to turn. I’m just going to take the punches…and try and move forward,” she says.
“AT CERTAIN POINTS…YOU START MAYBE DOUBTING IF YOU’RE EVER GOING TO BE 100 PERCENT HEALTHY FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME.” — CAROLINE WOZNIACKI, reflecting on her ups and downs while injured

Where the World’s Best Players on the WTA and ATP World Tour Come Together for the US Open Series Serving Up the Best of Summer Photos by Getty Images
About the Series
Sloane Stephens
Now in its 15th season, the US Open Series links seven hard-court WTA and ATP World Tour tournaments to the US Open. Since its inception in 2004, the US Open Series has centralized the way tennis is viewed in the U.S. and has been responsible for the introduction of cutting-edge innovations in the sport, from blue tennis courts and instant replay technology to a cohesive schedule that allows for “appointment television.” The US Open Series also provides tennis with an unprecedented platform for growing the game at the community and the professional levels.
John Isner
A World of Talent
Frances Tiafoe
For five consecutive weeks in mid-summer, the US Open Series enables fans to watch tennis’s top players and rising talents compete in tournaments from coast to coast before arriving in New York for the showcase championship of the season, the US Open. The Series helps grow the game by making it possible for the next generation of stars to go head to head with the tours’ leading players and elevate their games to succeed at the sport’s highest level.
Danielle Collins
Covering the Courts
Madison Keys
The US Open Series offers centralized coverage of the summer tennis season across TV and digital platforms. Throughout the five weeks, fans can enjoy more than 70 hours of live national coverage on ESPN2 and nearly 140 hours of weekday coverage on ESPN3. All of ESPN’s coverage is available to stream live on the ESPN App for mobile and OTT devices and on ESPN.com. Tennis Channel will carry weeklong coverage from Cincinnati and the ATP matches from Toronto while beIN Sports will air WTA matches from Montreal.
Jack Sock
Growing the Game In addition to engaging fans with dramatic action on the courts, the US Open Series brings a host of exciting family activities to each event, with the goal of making our sport more fun and more accessible than ever before. Activities include: Net Generation Experiences: • Coin tosses • High school days • Kids’ clinics • On-court demonstrations • Player escorts
Other Activities: • Adult League initiatives • Hispanic community outreach • National Junior Tennis and Learning clinics • Player appearances

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY For the KYNTCHEV FAMILY, volunteering at the Open is a yearly tradition, with both the parents and kids joining in on the fun. Tennis runs in the whole family—as both players and spectators—so it was only natural for the four to bond through volunteering for their favorite sport. By Addie Hogan

I am a lifelong fan of tennis and a recreational player.
I play tennis occasionally, but I mostly enjoy watching.
My favorite memories of the tournament were watching Roger Federer play live for the fi rst time and witnessing Grigor Dimitrov’s win last year.
My favorite players are Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
I have been playing tennis since I was 6 years old and have been a fan of the sport for as long as I can remember.
Tennis is my favorite sport. I am spending the summer in Sofia, Bulgaria, for a 10-week tennis camp playing on clay courts.
I enjoy watching how the ball kids—as young as 12—mature in the short period of five days and rise to the challenge of being key participants in a world-class tournament. I love being part of the tournament because it not only attracts the world tennis elite, but also contributes significantly to the economic growth in the area.
My favorite memory of the tournament was seeing my kids on the court for the fi rst time as ball kids—they made me proud of how composed and mature they looked for their age. I am always amazed at how thousands of people put in great effort and generously donate their time for a single cause and how the tournament leadership makes all of us feel appreciated for our work.
68 WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN 2018
My favorite players are Roger Federer and Grigor Dimitrov. My favorite memory is the fi rst time I stepped on court to be a ball girl. It was such an invigorating yet enthralling experience to be on court as the players played. I love coming back and seeing all the friends I have made over the years. It’s a great way to end the summer as well as watch great tennis.
My favorite players are Roger Federer and Grigor Dimitrov. My favorite memory volunteering was seeing the world’s most famous players in real life. The best part about volunteering at the Open is seeing old friends and making new ones.

SURVIVE and THRIVE
Kids get the care they need long after treatments end.
Hannah (pictured with her mother Mei Ling) was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 2, and she has been cancer free for 11 years—ever since her bone marrow transplant. Hannah is thriving today, thanks in part to the experts at the Cincinnati Children’s Cancer Survivorship Center, which cares for more than 1,800 survivors of all ages.
W
hen Hannah was just 2 years old, her mother, Mei Ling, brought her to Cincinnati Children’s for a high fever. At first, Mei Ling wasn’t too worried, as she thought this would be a quick trip. But as they treated her little girl, her worst fears were realized. “When the doctor came in, she was wearing a lab coat that said ‘Hematology/Oncology,’ ” explains Mei Ling. “That’s when I knew this was serious.” Hannah had a very uncommon form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one that can be fatal in just a few weeks if left untreated. Hannah’s leukemia was so rare that chemotherapy alone wouldn’t stop it—she needed a bone marrow transplant. With no match in Hannah’s family, the transplant team at Cincinnati Children’s set out to fi nd one. Luck was on their side: They found a match. Hannah received the transplant and slowly began to grow new blood cells and a stronger immune system to

fight her cancer. Hannah has been cancer-free ever since, yet she continues to see specialists at the medical center to ensure she remains healthy. And she’ll continue these visits for years to come, because cancer care at Cincinnati Children’s doesn’t stop when the treatments do. Childhood cancer survivors face elevated risks for certain complications as they grow up, such as infertility and secondary diseases. That’s why Cincinnati Children’s established the Cancer Survivorship Center, one of the fi rst of its kind in the United States. Today, they care for more than 1,800 survivors of all ages, empowering them to lead long, healthy lives. Hannah’s family is grateful for the world-renowned care she received right here in their hometown. “This was the right place to be for Hannah,” says Mei Ling. “Even if we move away from Cincinnati, we would make a trip back each year for her checkups through the survivor center. We are blessed to be treated at the best hospital for this in the world.”
PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Cincinnati Children’s as the top hospital in the country for pediatric cancer treatment.
