The first annual Cincinnati International Wine Festival takes place at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Founded by Russ Wiles, the twoday festival included Grand Tastings, a Live Auction, Food & Wine Seminars, and Wine Dinners. A total of $35,000 is donated to WGUC 90.9 FM.

The Kroger Co. joins the list of Wine Festival sponsors, and in 2005 they became a Presenting Sponsor. Their support continues at the Presenting level to this day!

1995 The Midwest Beer Fest is incorporated into the Cincinnati International Wine Festival’s lineup of events. It ran for four years and featured top performers such as Tina Turner and The Doobie Brothers. As the Cincinnati International Wine Festival is one of the Midwest’s largest and best wine festivals, the focus is now solely on wine.

After his passing, the Russ Wiles Scholarship for the Culinary Arts is established at the Cincinnati State Midwest Culinary Institute to honor Russ’s vision to expose Cincinnati to fine wine and great food. The scholarship helps two students every year.

The Cincinnati International Wine Festival kicks off its first annual Golf Tournament at the Western Hills Country Club. This outing set a new standard for premier golf tournaments. Locally, it is the first to incorporate fine-dining restaurants preparing food on the course during game play. Today, the tournament is known as the Russ Wiles Memorial Golf Tournament, played at the prestigious TPC River’s Bend.

The Wine Festival continues to establish itself as one of the premier wine events in the country. More than 5,000 people from more than 35 states help contribute a donation of $406,000 to local charities, and the festival reached another historic milestone of more than $6 million donated since its inception in 1991.

The Special Tasting Room is incorporated, featuring high-end red wines that retail for $60 or more and white wines that retail for $40 or more. It is now known as the Collectors Tasting Room and will be open for one hour prior to each Grand Tasting session.

The Charity Auction & Luncheon is introduced, with Dennis Speigel serving as the ďŹ rst Honorary Chair of the event. The event continues to be held at Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza’s Hall of Mirrors.
The International Festivals & Events Association honors the Wine Festival during its 57th Annual IFEA Conference with six prestigious Pinnacle Awards, including three gold awards for Best Promotional Brochure, Best Outdoor Billboard, and Best Supplement for the Cincinnati Magazine Tasting Guide.

Suzanne Groth BY KATHLEEN DOANE build a business, but I didn’t realize how well established and well regarded the wines were until I began working in hospitality. I spent most of my time setting up visits to Napa Valley for guests. After about four years, someone said, “You know a lot about Napa. Why aren’t you working there?” I thought, That’s a good question, and I called my dad.
Did you know early on you wanted to be in the family business? I think every teenager from a wine family who grows up in the Napa Valley would answer, “Hell, no!” when asked that question. We all had to do manual labor in the cellar. My first job at the winery was when I was 10 and my brother Andrew was 8. We were tasked with removing labels from probably a couple hundred cases of wine. The labels were glued on in those days, and we had to use soda ash and water to scrub them off. It was miserable! When did you change your mind? I went to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. I became fascinated with art history and ended up self-designing a course of study in art, basic design, and painting. After college, I spent some time volunteering in galleries and working in hotels in San Francisco. I’d watched [my parents]

What are your plans for the winery? We’re planning a comprehensive replanting, five or six acres each year. Doing it in smaller parcels like that will allow us to experiment with new clones and new technology. I also plan to launch two new estate wines, one white and one red, in the next three to five years. Any advice for the first-time festivalgoer? There’s always the tried-and-true, starting with whites and working toward reds. If you know what you like, it’s a chance to taste a lot, but pace yourself. Spit and drink lots of water. Eat something, too. As an artist, have you ever been tempted to do a label? I loved the label my parents created with Sebastian Titus. They put a lot of thought into it. Lots of white space with “Groth” the biggest thing. My mom wanted a label you could read across the room in a dark steak restaurant. A few years ago, an employee brought in a People magazine with an article on what celebrity chefs keep in their refrigerators. There was a photo of Martha Stewart’s Traulsen [wine refrigerator] with glass doors, and the only label you could read was on a bottle of Groth Sauvignon Blanc! I framed it and put it in the tasting room.

uzanne Groth, President and CEO of Groth Vineyards & Winery in Oakville, California, is Honorary Chair of the 2020 Cincinnati International Wine Festival. In 1981, Suzanne’s parents, Judy and Dennis Groth, bought the 121-acre vineyard as a new era in California winemaking was emerging.
Was he thrilled to welcome you on board at the winery? We talked awhile, and he said, “You didn’t think I was going to offer you a job, did you?” He suggested I talk to our distributor and one of our competitors. I ended up going to work for the Henry Wine Group as a sales person. By 1998, Dad thought I had enough outside experience to come home to Groth. I worked in sales, marketing, and public relations. In 2017, I succeeded Dad as president.
