Highlighted Programs The West Chester ■ Liberty Chamber Alliance strives to be a vital resource for members from West Chester and Liberty Townships, and along the I-75 Growth Corridor from Northern Kentucky to Dayton. Representing the interests of 700 member businesses and affecting 25,000 employees, our mission is to establish West Chester and Liberty Townships as the region’s business epicenter.

We serve our membership and our community through Chambernomics, educational forums, government advocacy, networking events and so much more. Here’s a look at just two of our programs:

Leadership 21 calls upon business owners and managers, government and school leaders, and citizen volunteers to study indepth, various aspects of our region. The 13th class of Leadership 21 begins in September 2013 and runs through May 2014 with graduation in September 2014. Through an application process, 25 to 30 leaders are selected to join the nine monthly, full-day sessions that allow them to explore issues such as education, history, government, criminal justice, communications and economic development, just to name a few. An entire day is spent on each topic and includes visits to key locations such as the county jail, local police department, schools, food pantries, hospitals and other businesses to give a clear picture of the community in which they live and do business. Chamber U community leadership programs in the southeastern Butler County community expose current and future leaders to a broad cross-section of the community.

evelopment activity along the I-75 Growth Corridor between Cincinnati and Dayton is accelerating. “There’s no question this is one of the hottest areas in the region,” says Craig Rambo, chairman of the architecture firm, McGill Smith Punshon. “The area between Cincinnati and Dayton offers a really big market.” Just how big? Columbus-based Steiner & Associates, a retail development company that built Easton Town Center near Columbus and The Greene Town Center in Dayton, says the Cincinnati-Dayton metroplex will be the nation’s 15th largest metropolitan area with 3.5 million people by 2015, larger than either the Columbus or Cleveland metro areas.

Steiner plans to break ground this fall on its renamed Liberty Center, a $300 million retail, residential and commercial development at I-75 and Liberty Way that’s expected to be a major development trigger along the corridor. With the recession an increasingly distant speck in their rear-view mirror, developers are putting together new projects or dusting off old ones along the 20-mile corridor between Interstate 675 and Interstate 275. Rambo, who was part of the I-75 visioning process several years ago, sees development focused on six primary interchanges: Union Centre in West Chester, Liberty Way in Liberty Township, state Route 63 in Monroe, state Route 122 in Middletown, Austin Boulevard, and the West Carrollton area south of Dayton.

One interesting aspect is that all of the interchanges are developing their own character, he says. For example, the first phase of Liberty Center (slated to open in 2015) will encompass 1.1 million square feet. More than half of it will be retail, including a 200,000 square-foot Dillard’s Department Store. To the north, construction is under way on the $175 million Lebanon Racino – a combination horse track and video lottery gaming facility – in Turtlecreek Township and east of the Cincinnati Premium Outlet Mall. Industrial Developments International Inc., which developed the Monroe Logistics Center west of Monroe, acquired the former Corridor 75 commercial park. The park is home to the massive Home

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Depot distribution center. Renamed Park North at Monroe, IDI plans to build a 651,000 square-foot distribution facility on the site. To the south, about five miles from the I-75 Union Centre Boulevard interchange, chicken processor, Koch Foods, is reviving a $45 million multi-year expansion put on hold last year at its Port Union Road plant in Fairfield. The project will nearly double its existing plant and create about 400 jobs. Mike Juengling, the West Chester community development director, says development activity along the I-75 is part due to location and the health care industry.

“The West Chester office market isn’t booming, but it’s solid and growing,” says Schumacher.

This summer, the $10 million Beckett Springs Hospital opens on Union Centre Boulevard in West Chester. The 48bed private facility will treat a variety of behavioral health disorders.

ead out into the heat this summer to enjoy the company of family and friends in the beautiful preserves of MetroParks of Butler County. From the east side to the west side of the county, 10 parks in eight townships are open on a daily basis providing residents and nonresidents outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, fishing, camping, birding, educational programs for adults and children, and much more. And like the increasing business opportunities along the I-75 Growth Corridor, MetroParks of Butler County is in the process of expanding and upgrading its parks and trails in its communities. MetroParks of Butler County’s master enhancement plan includes the building of 22 new athletic fields, which is part of phase one, at the Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester Township. The

facility is expected to open in fall 2014 and is projected to bring $26 million in revenue to the area. “It will bring lots and lots of people to Butler County as a whole,” says Kelly Barkley, community relations coordinator. “And from a park perspective, it doesn’t cost taxpayers money.” Also sometime this summer, a 1.2 mile paved bike trail will connect to Ronald Reagan Trail around the 35-acre lake on the Liberty side of VOA MetroPark. Pet parents will also benefit from the upgrades at VOA MetroPark and Cincy Magazine’s 75 on 75 honoree. Phase two of the master enhancement plan includes the installation of a water feature for Wiggly Field’s furry guests to swim or just cool off in the summer heat. Also in the works is an amphitheater that will be used for musical events and other programs. The 10,000-

seat roof-covered amphitheater will also seat 3,500 on the synthetic turf lawn. The upgrades and expansions aren’t just limited to the 400 acres at VOA MetroPark, however. In 2012, three parks - Governor Bebb in Morgan Township, Rentschler Forest in Fairfield Township and Forest Run received brand new playground equipment. But all of the upgrades and renovations are contingent on sponsorship and collaborative partnerships. “MetroParks is gathering necessary input and information from all interested parties, including Butler County residents, to develop comprehensive individual park plans for Rentschler Forest, Chrisholm, Woodsdale and Forest Run in 2013,” says Barkley. “Additionally, the master planning process must take into consideration any

PARKS AND RECREATION development restrictions on the types of development that is permitted for each location.” For example, the city of Middletown spearheaded the construction of a ninemile trail from Trenton to Middletown in partnership with the Miami Conservancy District. MetroParks of Butler County will manage the trail and provide the programming. “Collaboration is the name of the game,” says Barkley. And it has to be. It costs $500,000 per mile to maintain the trails, and MetroParks relies heavily on volunteers, peace officers, bike and hike patrols to keep the parks and trails safe for residents and nonresidents to enjoy all the programs and activities it has to offer. In 1975, there were only 705 park acres for the communities in Butler County to enjoy. With the addition of Mill Race Preserve (north of Oxford and south of Houston Woods), adults and children can hike, bike, picnic and just have fun on 3,824 acres of MetroParks land. ■

In November 2012, The Streets of West Chester added another store, LOFT - a women’s apparel store alongside other popular locations like Barnes & Noble and an array of restaurants. Southwest Ohio is also home to the second fastest growing area in the state and contains one of the largest economic development projects. Smith Road in West Chester, where patrons can order a meal at the counter. “Everything we do is from scratch, which makes the food quality that much better,” said Troy Meyers, head chef and owner. “It’s unpretentious.” Meyers, who runs the restaurant with his wife Tania, says his most popular items are his gourmet burgers, which are ground fresh at a butcher shop next door. Troy’s also has a selection of 60 bottles of wine, as well as Monday night wine tastings and no corkage fees on Wednesdays. Wine enthusiasts looking for an even wider selection can

tudents at Primrose learn more than just numbers and the alphabet at the Primrose School of West Chester. In April 2010, owners Roland and Dona Young left their law practices in Connecticut and moved to Cincinnati to purchase the accredited private preschool because of its already enriched curriculum. In addition to the students’ socialemotional, cognitive and physical stages of development, the private preschool also focuses on character development. “Every month we’re working on something new like keeping promises, or honesty, or courage,” says Young. “It’s a more sophisticated lesson each time they move on.” After leaving Primrose, some students may move on to the Lakota School District, a public school district that has maintained the state’s highest academic ranking for 11

consecutive years. In only two years at the helm, Superintendent Dr. Karen Mantia has cut millions of dollars from the budget and is helping students gain learning experiences outside the classroom through partnerships within the community. Just last year, West Chester Hospital and Lakota Schools launched a pilot program where ten Lakota West High School students worked with healthcare professionals in seven departments at the hospital. The school district and the hospital want to increase the number of students who participate in the 2013-2014 school year.

The Miami University VOA Learning Center and Butler Tech, which is one of Ohio’s largest career-technical schools, provide optimal opportunities and programs for high school and college students, and business professionals. Miami University VOA Learning Center Farmer School of Business part-time MBA program was ranked 59th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The Miami University VOA Learning Center is the only nationally ranked MBA program in the area. “For the VOA as an entity, the ‘pow’ is its

accessibility to a Miami quality education at an undergraduate and graduate level that’s accessible to make it convenient for people,” says Rod Nimtz, director of Miami University VOA Learning Center. A hybrid mix of traditional and online classes is available year-round for students and business professionals with busy schedules to access an excellent education on their own time. “If we don’t have what a student is looking for, we can tell them who does,” says Nimtz about providing class schedules for other higher education institutions such as Butler Tech. Butler Tech also provides convenience and valuable guidance to its 27,000 secondary and adult students enrolled in its programs.

“Butler Tech is very focused on preparing our students for their next step after school,” says superintendent and CEO Bill Miller. Secondary students learn workplace skills through Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO’s), occupational clubs that involve teamwork activities, project-based learning, and skills competitions in the area and around the country. Students are also taught by seasoned professionals and benefit from a Butler Tech education. “The connections they establish here, both with their peers and with industry insiders, give them a true competitive edge in the marketplace,” adds Miller. ■

Headway Along The Health Care Highway

ust as businesses follow their customers, hospitals follow their patients. The recent growth in health care services in Butler County, especially along the I-75 Growth Corridor, has mirrored the growth in business, retail and residential development in the area.

In the last five years, three major hospitals opened along the corridor: UC Health’s West Chester Hospital, the Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus and the Atrium Medical Center, replacing the Middletown Regional Hospital. They join Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital, established 30 years ago, the first fullservice health care facility in the northern Cincinnati/Butler County region.

Perhaps the region’s biggest health care news in 2013 was the spring opening of UC Health’s Women’s Center at West Chester Hospital. A long time dream of Dr. Lisa Larkin, a specialist in midlife health issues and menopause, the center is not just an OB-GYN service, but an integrated approach to women’s health issues, from adolescence to geriatrics. It amounts to one-stop shopping for women covering areas that include primary care, OB-GYN, psychological services, skin care and reconstructive surgery, special surgical care and comprehensive breast care, including cancer treatment.

The 26,000 square-foot facility features 50 exam rooms, 20 physician specialists on staff and 30 more who visit the center.

Dr. Larkin sees the center as a resource for women in the area, even if they don’t become regular patients. “I want this to be perceived as a place that women can contact to get good evidence-based information,” she said. “There will be a lecture series and other resources available. I have not seen anything close to this in the country with this many services under one roof and where services will be integrated.” Meanwhile, in just four years since it opened, West Chester Hospital established itself as one of the premier care facilities in Greater Cincinnati garnering several awards, including Healthgrades’ Outstanding Patient Experience Award for 2012 and 2013. The center is also one of two hospitals in Ohio to receive the Emergency Center of

HEALTH CARE Excellence Designation for its emergency department, which pledges a patient will see a doctor in 15 minutes or less. West Chester Hospital also launched a new partnership with Lakota West High School that will eventually give hundreds of students a hands-on experience in

biomedical fields. Students will receive high school credit as they shadow hospital physicians and other professionals. A partnership with Butler Tech also permits students to earn credit by following physicians and rotating through such stations at WCH’s biomedical labs and occupational therapy.

The biggest addition at the Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus is it will offer outpatient psychology and psychiatry services starting in the summer of 2013. The facility features a 24/7 full service emergency room, ten patient beds and is one of the largest outpatient centers in Greater Cincinnati for a wide range of

pediatric care. The Liberty location also increased its infectious disease services this year. Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital, the largest in the area, launched a determined effort to prepare for the future of health care. Mercy Health leads the way in a transformative shift of health care focus to what’s known as accountable care—where health care providers try to manage the overall health of a patient population, rather than rely on mere patient volume to service a community and become profitable. Mercy Health is the first hospital group in the area to receive the Accountable Care Designation from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital opened a new fifth floor patient tower this year adding 29 oncology beds. In other developments, it became the first in the Cincinnati region to use a groundbreaking new stent, started an aquatic class for breast cancer recovery at its Fairfield Healthplex and launched a new outpatient wound center in

March equipped with special hyperbaric oxygen chambers that help hard-to-heal wounds. The Ohio Lactation Consultants Association also named the facility a Maternity Care Best Practice Hospitals. Looking to next year, Mercy HealthFairfield Hospital has begun fundraising to add a state-of-the-art special care nursery with eight private rooms and a focus on treating babies born with addictions passed on by the mother.

“Unfortunately, this is a growing phenomenon. We are seeing more babies born addicted to opiates. We need to treat them quickly and deal with their sensitivity to light and sound,” said Greg Ossmann, hospital spokesman. “This trend cuts across every economic, racial or ethnic strata.” ■

Mount Pleasant Retirement Village Mount Pleasant, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, engaged in an innovative program this spring – Miami University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR). Village residents now have easy access to strengthening and expanding their minds through educational and fun classes like wood carving, genealogy, financial planning, foreign languages and yoga, to name a few.

The ILR began in 1996, but Mount Pleasant was not involved until resident Lois Phillips and Lori Shutrump, admissions case manager, pushed for it. “Anything that the residents drive is going to be successful,” says Shutrump. West Chester Activity Center Who doesn’t like getting pampered? Partners in Prime, which operates the West Chester Activity Center, starting offering therapy services to members and the local community in 2010. “We felt it was a natural fit, coupled with the other programming that we offer,” says Steve Schnabl, president of Partners in Prime. “Wellness is the full integration of physical, social, and spiritual well-being that make up each whole person.” Older community members can relax, soothe sore muscles and lessen pain through a variety of spa options: neuromuscular massage, for lower back pain; Swedish massage, for balance and harmony; facials; waxing; and even pedicure and manicure services. ■
