WELCOME to Adams County

W

e’ve been busy a rou nd here. T he h istor ic Harshaville Covered Bridge was restored last summer, and the Edge of Appalachia Preserve is rerouting hiking trails and developing ne w ones. T he Ada m s County Welcome Sign is getting a makeover with native wildflowers, and we dedicated the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail. New cabins and cottages are also in the works as tourism grows in Adams County. We hope you’ll plan a visit this summer. Stay at one of our classy B&Bs or at any of our cabins nestled in the woods. I’ll invite you to have a hearty breakfast. Visit the Wheat Ridge Amish Community and take a drive to Serpent Mound. Adams County is full of mom-and-pop restaurants and dairy bars. I’ve eaten at all of them and they all would make a great lunch stop. Next, a drive through the rural countryside will reveal an array of colorful barn quilts. They’re everywhere. Probably no other county in Ohio has as many quilt barns as Adams County. Donna Sue Groves’ vision not only took root here but it has blossomed beyond all expectations. To see the original take state Route 247 south of West Union and look for the Ohio Star. Nature is abundant in Adams County as state nature preserves dot the map and hiking trails at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve beg to be explored. If you just want a picnic with a view check out Creeks Bend on Waggoner Riffle Road. Visit Adams County during our fall festivals. The Wheat Ridge Herb Fair, Caraway’s Pumpkin Days, The Old Fashion Draft Horse Mule and Pony Days, Heritage Days, Jack Roush Day, and Miller’s Anniversary are all great events to have fun and spend time with family and friends. We have antique shops, concerts at the Red Barn, covered bridges, historical sites, and launches for canoes or boats. After a busy day of sightseeing I can’t think of a better way to cap the evening than with dinner at Murphin Ridge Inn or at Moyer Winery and Restaurant with its beautiful view of the Ohio River. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll be seated at the table by the window, Tom Cross, Executive Director Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau (937) 544-5639, (877) 232-6764 tomcross@adamscountytravel.org www.adamscountytravel.org 509 E. GE PEEBLES TEST OPERATION Excellence In Harmony Imag ine spending your day working in a state of the art facility, testing jet engines that propel passengers across the sky at hundreds of miles an hour, and then spending your lunch break outside watching deer graze in a nearby field. This is a typical day for a Peebles Test Operation (PTO) employee. PTO is proud to be a part of the GE tradition of “imagination at work”. We are 300 employees strong in craftsmanship, work ethics, and ingenuity surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery southern Ohio has to offer. PTO is part of what Forbes magazine called “The Most Admired Company in the World”, yet enjoys the intimacy of a small business where we know

everyone’s name at the Christmas party. Being one of the world’s premiere sites for jet engine testing, we are a small city with the infra-structure to accurately measure thrust from our smallest engines producing 2000 lbs. of thrust to the world record holder the GE90 at 127,900 lbs. of thrust. PTO also conducts acoustic, fuel efficiency, and emissions tests, to better protect the air quality and environment. Our test sites are considered the “gold standard” for all other GE jet engine test facilities. The accuracy of any GE engine test anywhere in the world is measured against this facility, right here in Peebles, Ohio. Beyond the physical campus our employees travel the globe and help many of our partners and customers with their testing needs.

Growing With Jet Technology PTO was originally acquired for rocket testing in 1955. In the 1960’s the focus changed to high–bypass turbo fan engine testing. Because of our remote location PTO played a key role in the development of these engines. This technological marvel was powerful enough to carry enormous Army transport planes anywhere on the planet—and later helped revolutionize commercial aviation as well. Since then, the PTO Team has been involved in the development and certification phase testing that are on the cutting edge of aviation. The production phase involves assurance testing of new engines to guarantee they meet strict requirements before shipment to GE customers. And finally, field return testing is performed to validate maintenance and upgrades to engines already in service.

WE ARE IMAGINATION AT WORK! Technology Meets Nature Because of the terrain, abundant water and restrictions on entry, PTO has developed into the largest privately owned natural area in the state totaling over 7,000 acres. This environment allows for a number of wildlife species to flourish. This is evident in recent years when biologists visiting the site have identified over 500 species of plants, 37 species of reptiles, 25 species of mammals, and over 100 species of birds, many of which are state listed as rare or endangered. GE PTO takes great pride in ensuring the protection of our pristine environment as the facility continues to thrive. In addition to the forested land GE-PTO maintains four acres of man-made wetlands, several acres of natural wetlands and two streams. One stream running through the facility is considered one of the most pristine habitats in the state. The local schools, universities and scientists often come to this area to study the wildlife in this unspoiled habitat.

Ecomagination At Work The Peebles facility has very specific goals regarding future Green House Gas (GHG) emissions reductions, which follow a closely monitored set of metrics. In GE’s recent ecomagination report, the company made a public commitment to reduce GHG emissions GE holds all of its businesses to this company-wide goal, including the Aviation business – the organizational home of the Peebles facility. Today’s engines are ever more fuel efficient, carrying passengers and cargo to the far corners of the globe with less fuel burn than ever before. PTO continues to play a strong role in the certification and acceptance testing of these engines.

PLACES Caraway’s Fall Pumpkin Days

A Pumpkin Picker’s Paradise

D

uring Caraway’s Fall Pumpkin Days, more than 5,000 to 6,000 pumpkins will pass from Caraway Farm in Blue Creek to festivalgoers and eager pumpkin buyers who will sort through the many varieties of pumpkins to find just the right one. According to Angie Caraway, six to seven different kinds of pumpkins are grown on the farm each year. Atlantic Giants, Wyatt’s Wonders, Big Moons, Big Max pumpkins, peanut pumpkins, Prizewinners and Jarrahdales usually round out the 10-acre patch. Planting starts in June and by September the pumpkins are ready to pick.

Caraway’s is the place to be during pumpkin picking season.

PLACES Caraway’s Fall Pumpkin Days “We are usually open by mid-September,” says Angie, who along with her husband, Forest, has held the annual event on their farm for the past five years. The Caraways grow some big pumpkins too, some weighing as much as 300 pounds. “These go fast,” said Angie. “We have customers who are waiting for a phone call to get these big pumpkins.” While only 10 to 20 pumpkins a year reach those weights, Forest holds back a few to display and sell at the annual festival. However, Angie says it’s the smaller pumpkins that make the best pies. At Caraway’s Fall Pumpkin Days, jack-o’-lantern pumpkins sell for $3 to $4, big pumpkins are $12 and under, and the 150-pound plus giants will fetch $15 to $20. “No pumpkin, no matter the size, is over $20,” says Angie.

The 2014 Caraway’s Fall Pumpkin Days is Oct. 4 and 5 at 8450 Blue Creek Rd., Blue Creek. ◆

A new look is coming the Adams County Welcome Sign on state Route 32 at Winchester. For more than a decade Jerry Ginn, former schoolteacher and landscaper from Seaman who voluntarily tended to the flowers and shrubbery at the Welcome Sign, has retired. Adams County Master Gardeners is taking over Ginn’s duties as one of its most visible projects to date. In place of the shrubbery and flowers, native wildflowers and prairie plants will now grow. The AC Master Gardeners, in partnership with the Edge of Appalachia Preserve, planted a variety of native prairie plants at the Adams County Welcome Sign this past summer and will again this summer. All plants are native Adams County wildflowers provided by the EOA staff and were selected as the best representatives of native plants that grow in the natural prairies found throughout Adams County. Planted were Tall Coreopsis, Bee Balm, Purple Coneflower, Gray-headed Coneflower, Little Bluestem, Black Eyed Susan, False White Indigo, Butterfly Weed, Rattlesnake Master, and Tall Larkspur. According to Richard McCarty, preserve manager at the “Edge”, it will take a couple of summers before the plants completely fill in the area around the sign, and after the flowers take root and spread he expects the sign welcoming folks to Adams Country to look great. Members of the AC Master Gardeners include: Sharon Bell, Kathy Lohse, Cathy Lawson, Beth Frazer, Cheryl Schoonover, Lori Rigsby and Judy Kirker.

NATURE

O

n a map, the trail between Ohio’s Shawnee State Forest and The

Nature Conservancy’s Edge of Appalachia Preserve is a winding dervish of a footpath, rising over wooded ridges and dropping into narrow gorges. But right now a map is the only place where most of this trail exists. In June 2013, volunteers from the Buckeye Trail Association began work to make this trail a reality. Starting at the “Edge” the work crew built about three-quarters of a mile of new trail, the first of about 14 miles that will pass over rugged and

wooded terrain to the Shawnee. Making all this possible is an ambitious project by the Conservancy to join these two protected areas by purchasing up to 6,000 acres of land between the Conservancy’s 16,000-acre preserve and the 60,000-acre Shawnee state forest and state park. When complete, the project will create the largest block of consolidated forest in Ohio and a habitat for bobcats, wild turkey and rare birds like cerulean warblers. Once completed, the trail will become part of the North County and Buckeye Trail. A back county camping

NATURE area is also planned for the trail. The Conservancy had bought roughly a third of the property by spring 2013 with less than a quarter-mile now separating these two protected areas. “When completed this section of the trail will provide a great opportunity for those looking to experience one of Ohio’s wildest areas,” says Andrew Bashaw, the executive director of the Buckeye Trail Association. Pete W han, senior conser vationist at the EOA Preserve, expects the new Portman Trail to be completed in four to five years, but some of the Conservancy staff couldn’t wait to see it. They joined Bashaw for a cross-country bushwhack on Conservancy-owned land to groundtruth the proposed trail. Josh Knights, executive director of the Conservancy’s Ohio program, gives you a peek at his field notes from the trek:

DAY 1 We stop early for lunch the first day. Andrew talks about trail design. This isn’t the Conservancy’s first experience with the BTA. A couple of years ago, a portion of the Buckeye Trail was routed through

our Strait Creek Preserve. “You have to let the trail take the people where they want to go,” Andrew tells us. That sounds reasonable, but where do we want to go? That day, it seems we want to visit an old tobacco barn, find a box turtle muddling next to a stream, and take a detour to a rocky outcropping we dub “Apothecary Rock” for the abundance of medicinal plants it supports.

DAY 2 A lthough the trail has been roughly sketched out on a topo [topography] map, Andrew makes notes along the way about how to change it. Unexpected obstacles and features that would interest a hiker lead Andrew to stop and scribble on his map. A difficult climb in the afternoon is rewarded with a magnificent view from a ridgetop, but the sky is becoming increasing overcast. Soon it is raining. The rain seems to bring out the smells of the forest, and when our path takes us through a thicket of spicebush, we’re all pleasantly surprised by the fragrance. On the slippery forest floor we pay more

attention to our steps and are rewarded with the discovery of an ovenbird nest, an intercontinental migrant that nests in these forests we are trying to save.

DAY 3 After breakfast, we venture off the map trail to take a “short cut” down a steep slope to a creek. We are rewarded with multiple encounters of showy yellow ladyslipper orchids, which seem to appreciate this stream. We stop to eat our lunch in a small barrens created by a thin layer of soil coating a rocky outcrop where we find Indian paintbrush plants thriving. We ford a shallow stream that is guarded by a pink ladyslipper orchid, a lone sentry among the reindeer lichen. I lag behind a little, hoping to delay the inevitable end of my time in the woods. But as I walk down the last hillside, I am reassured by the knowledge that our work with the Buckeye Trail Association will allow many hikers to enjoy this special place. ◆

HAPPY NEW TRAIL[HEAD]S TO YOU

In spring, two new trailheads will be open to the public at Lynx Prairie and Buzzardroost Rock, two of the popular trails along with the Wilderness Trail within the “Edge.” A new entrance to the Buzzardroost Rock trail will be located on the south side of state Route 125, saving hikers from having to cross it, approximately 1.5 miles east from Waggoner Riffle Road. The new Buzzardroost Trail entrance coordinates: -83.426 38.771. Lynx Prairie also got a new trailhead located at the end Cline Road, just off Tulip Rd. The new trail moves the entrance of the popular Lynx Prairie Trail away from the township cemetery to Cline Road. The new Lynx Prairie Trail coordinates: -83.407 38.759. Also in the works, new signage will also help direct hikers to the new (and old) EOA hiking trails. The Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau is planning an open house at the Eulett Center on Waggoner Riffle Road in the spring, and The Nature Conservancy will unveil the new trail improvements at the “Edge.” Watch local papers and visit adamscountytravel.org or nature.org for the date and times of the open house. The Adams County Quilt Barn Trail “THE BARE CANVAS OF AN OLD BARN PROVED TO BE FERTILE GROUND FOR THE IMAGINATIVE MIND OF DONNA SUE GROVES.”

The Friendship Star on Vaughn Ridge Road near West Union, Ohio.

I

n searching for a way to honor her mother, Maxine Groves, who is an accomplished quilter, Donna Sue Groves sparked a nationwide tourism phenomenon. The artful display of colorful quilt barn murals that started with an idea and a barn in rural Adams County has spread coast to coast and into Canada. The program began with 21 Adams County barns and seed money from the Ohio Arts Council and The Nature Conservancy. That historic first quilt square, the “Ohio Star,” which was dedicated in 2001, is located at Lewis Mountain, south of West Union on state Route 247. The quilt barn program in Adams County ended two years later with the final quilt square, “Hovering Hawks,” in

Peebles. But that was just the beginning of what was to follow. Coordinated by enthusiastic community leaders and volunteers united behind one idea, more than 40 states and countless communities from Ohio to California turned Donna Sue’s vision into dedicated quilt trails spanning the nation. In Adams County countless quilt squares have found their way to barns as local admirers have taken it upon themselves to add quilts to their own barns, sheds, garages, and fences. By some estimates more than 50 quilt squares adorn barns and buildings in the rural countryside of Adams County. Sometimes you have to search for the quilt barns, but finding them is half the fun. ◆

HISTORY

The Harshaville Covered Bridge 1855-2013 Morgan’s raid terrorized Adams County

B

uilt in 1855 along what was then called Graces Run and Dunkinsville Pike, the Harshaville Covered Bridge could certainly be considered one of the oldest covered bridges still in use today. Spanning nearly 110 feet across Cherry Fork Creek, the historic bridge now serves as the gateway to the Wheat Ridge Amish Community. Horse and buggy traffic across the old bridge is a common sight. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Ohio Historical Places Dictionary describes the bridge as an outstanding example of a Burr Truss bridge, and historical records show that the bridge underwent renovation in the 1940s and again in the 1960s. During the 1940s renovation, the two concrete piers were added. No pictures are known to exist of the Harshaville Bridge prior to 1933. Old records of the bridge’s original construction were probably lost in the courthouse fire in 1910, which destroyed nearly all of the records and the courthouse. The bridge got its name from the small community of Harshaville, which was known for the grist mills that operated along Cherry Fork Creek in earlier times. According to the late Steve Kelly, noted Adams County historian, the first grist mill was made of logs in 1817 by Samuel Wright Jr. The business apparently prospered and a larger mill was built in 1824. In 1846, Pennsylvanians Paul and Martha Harsha purchased the mill, tripled its capacity and added a waterpowered saw mill. Business at the mill attracted other businesses and tradesmen and the small community of “Harshaville” was born. It was probably during the 1850s that the mill was converted to steam power. Around that same time, the (Harshaville) covered bridge was built over Cherry Fork Creek and most likely made from timbers milled at the Harsha sawmill. The Harsha mill continued to see expansion during the late 1850s

and again in 1882, according to Kelly. In 1881, the mill burned but was rebuilt in the spring of 1882, and by the 1920s, the old Harsha mill closed forever. The Harsha’s impact on Adams County can still be recognized today. Four generations later, James B. Harsha, the great, great-grandson of Paul Harsha, married Jane Ridgeway who penned a popular column in a weekly newspaper, The Peoples Defender, titled “Through Another Door.” Jane also inherited the family hardware business located on Panhandle Avenue in West Union, which is still in operation and still bears the name “James B. Harsha Hardware.” On July 15, 1863 General John Hunt Morgan and infamous “Morgan’s Raiders” crossed the Harshaville Covered Bridge on their way out of Winchester. Unlike the other bridges they crossed, the raiders did not burn the Harshaville Bridge. The raiders also visited the homes of Paul and William B. Harsha where they confiscated nine horses. In 2013—150 years after Morgan’s Raid— the Adams County Engineers office undertook a complete historical renovation of the Harshaville Bridge in March. The renovation cost $469,000. Funding for the bridge came from the National Historic Bridge Preservation Program ($100,000), ODOT- Transpor-

tation Enhancement Funds ($275,500) and local funding contributed the remaining amount at $93,500. Cooper Excavating, a local company, completed the work. On July 15, 2013, the Adams County Travel & Visitor Bureau and the Adams County Historical Society held a commemorative event in Winchester, Harshaville and Locust Grover to dedicate the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail. Morgan’s Raiders passed through each of those communities on their two-day raid through Adams County. During the ceremony at Harshaville, a ribbon cutting and re-dedication of the historically restored Harshaville Covered Bridge was held. Although the bridge was not officially opened to traffic, county engineer David Hook made special arrangements to have the caravan of cars pass through the bridge on that historic day. Due to rain and other complications the bridge was finally opened to traffic in early August 2013. The renovated Harshaville Covered Bridge is southeast of Seaman on Graces Run Road. Ada ms Cou nt y ’s ot her covered bridge, the Kirker Bridge, is located on state Route 136, south of West Union. ◆ www.adamscountytravel.org

AMISH

Amish Memories of Our First Years in Adams County

By Aden Yutzy Adapted from a story that first appeared in the Wheat Ridge Amish Directory

O

ccasionally someone asks us the question, how did we ever end up settling in Adams County, Ohio? The first seven families moved here from Milroy, Indiana. The way that came about, one of Harvey Schrock’s harness shop customers, Bill Lafferty from West Union, invited him to come to Adams County to look around. Harvey had made it known to Bill that several Milroy families wanted to relocate. Mr. Lafferty told Harvey, “We have good land and poor land and anything in between.” The old locals that were around here back then are almost all gone. Lee Shriver, Joe May, Lee Young and Ernest Butz were usually around to help with the unloading when the first families moved in. They not only helped us, they also made us feel welcome. Dan and John Troyer’s moved first on Aug. 24, 1976. Next we moved on Sept. 30 and Harvey’s family on Oct. 21. Before Harvey’s moved they had a frolic to tear off the A shaped roof from their house and put a full upstairs on top. The walls were assembled and laying in the yard. Frolic day was here and plenty of help ready to go. The only holdup was the electrician didn’t show up to disconnect the electric wires from the house. Carpenter Dan Troyer was in the mood to get things done and right now. He shot off the wires with a shotgun and we were soon in the construction business and had the upstairs in the dry by evening. Several weeks before we moved, Roy Raber, and son Dennis and myself, and several of our boys came in from Milroy to get some buildings in shape to put hogs in. We stayed several days and Roy was the cook, we had plenty to eat, especially the one evening when we had enough fried potatoes to feed a thrasher crew. Next the Harry Miller family moved in on Nov. 3 followed by the Roy Raber fam-

ily on Nov.11. The seventh and last family to move in that first fall was the Ivan Troyer family on Nov. 23. Six out of the seven families lived fairly close together and our family lived at the west end of the settlement. The first Amish church ser vice was held at Dan Troyer’s house on Oct. 3, 1976 with only four families being there, Dan’s, John’s, our family and the Willis Stutzman’s, who were visitors from Dover, Delaware. According to Katie’s diary, the coldest day that first winter was on Monday, Jan. 17, 1977 when it was 19 below. The day before Dan’s, John and our family with baby Steven were to attend church in Beliefontaine at Freeman Yutzy’s. Freeman had to get a neighbor to jump start our driver’s cold van before we could start for home. We were all relieved when that cold journey was over. In 1977 we remodeled the farmhouse and during that summer our water system was very simple with a garden hose and nozzle sticking in through the bathroom window. Our water pipes had been frozen the previous January. The first couple years we helped each other a lot with putting up buildings and also with farm work. Over the years that has gradually changed and we have become more independent. Aden Yutzy’s family is one of the first Amish families to move to Adams County. Aden and his sons operate a pallet mill and machine shop on Unity Road. ◆

SERPENT MOUND

Serpent Mound in September

Text below taken from Evans & Stivers “A History of Adams County-1900” from a visit to Serpent Mound in 1883. “Scatter over the vast extent of territory stretching from the Alleghenies on the east to the Rockies on the west, and extending from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, are landmarks of an ancient people, once inhabitants of this region, and whom, we, for the want of a more specific term, call the Mound Builders. At what period of time these people flourished, or when they ceased to be, is problematical. And again, when the white man’s attention was first called to the numerous mounds and enclosures in the Ohio Valley as being the work of an extinct race, it was observed that forest growths over these works were of the same species as those in the outlying regions, which

would prove the great antiquity of these structures. It is well known to persons skilled in woodcraft that several generations of trees must come and go before barren soils will reproduce the variety and kinds of virgin forest. The Great Serpent Mound is located on the east fork of Ohio Brush Creek in the extreme northern portion of Adams County. It lies along the crest of a narrow spur-like ridge rising in its highest part to an altitude of one hundred and fifty feet above the level of the waters of Brush Creek. The Great Serpent lies extended in beautiful folds down along the crest, with head and neck stretched out, serpent-like, on the high and precipitous bluff, overlooking the creek and country beyond. Just to the north of the serpents head, and partly within its extended jaws, is an oval or egg-shaped

36 ADAMS COUNTY VISITORS AND COMMUNITY GUIDE

figure, surrounded by an embankment from two to three feet high and about twenty feet wide. A little to the north of the center of the egg-shaped figure is [was] a pile of stones showing plainly marks of fire; and some have supposed here once to have been an alter about which a benighted people performed the mystic rites of their religion. That human sacrifice formed a part of the rites of this worship seems certain from the evidence gained by a study of the mound. How many centuries ago it was built will never be known until the great day when all earth’s secrets are opened.” From A History of Adams County, Evans & Stivers. It’s their retirement, Paula says with a laugh. They had a lot to learn: there are nine hand-built cabins and a lodge with 10 rooms to manage. The 15-member staff helped to make the transition seamless, and many are farm kids from the area and several have agricultural degrees. “The staff is wonderful,” says Paula. “They are talented and amazing.” The couple wants to develop the farming aspect of the place in the coming years.
