A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE CONCOCTS AN INNOVATIVE SOCIAL NETWORK FOR STUDENTS TO SHARE THEIR WRITINGS By Gloria McNerney

weekend of studying for the SAT inspired Rajat Bhageria, a 2014 Sycamore High School graduate, to brew up a new social network. He realized the test didn’t express his friends’ writing abilities and that they needed an outlet. In January 2014, Bhageria launched CaféMocha, an online social network allowing high school students to publish and share their creative works while encouraging others to follow their interests. CafeMocha.org is the only resource on the Internet developed for high school students to share writing. “I used the principle that a café was used to discuss, publish and share innovative ideas,” says the 17 year old, who came up with CaféMocha because European thinkers during the Enlightenment met in cafés.

On the web site, students submit their creative essays, stories and poetry—without the fear of being graded—on various topics that are grouped into “mochas” or categories, such as non-fiction or chemistry. Users can comment and provide constructive criticism. Since CafeMocha.org went live, it has had 30,000 page views per month and is continuing to grow. It’s also received positive feedback from teachers and writing experts. “The main goal is to find professionals and sponsors who will help students by reading their essays and perhaps even recruiting them to publish professionally,” Bhageria says. n

Cancer Care Close to Home

he Dayton Physicians Network helps fight cancer with advanced care right in your own backyard. Conveniently located at the Atrium Medical Center’s Compton Center in Middletown right off Interstate 75 and state Route 122, the network has radiation oncologists and medical oncologists with access to comprehensive services such as advanced imaging, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and breakthrough clinical research. These doctors also have access to cutting edge equipment and methods that can target cancer cells more effectively, including the Elekta Synergy. With the Elekta, the doctors at the Compton Center offer stereotactic body radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiated therapy (IGRT). “With these state-of-the-art technologies, we are able to escalate the amount of radiation delivered to the tumor and minimize the exposure of surrounding normal tissues; thereby, patients have a better chance of a cure with less side effects,” says Dr. Ryan Steinmetz, Dayton Physicians Network’s primary radiation oncologist at the Compton Center. For example, men with prostate cancer are treated with IGRT and IMRT, which results in less diarrhea and less

Compton Center frequency of urination during treatment. “These techniques allow us to protect the rectum and the bladder, and at the same time increase the dose of radiation to the prostate, which leads to higher cure rates,” says Dr. Steinmetz. At the Compton Center, which primarily provides outpatient services, the Dayton Physicians Network’s doctors and staff use other state-of-the-art equipment and therapy to treat cancer. High Dose-Rate brachytherapy localizes a radiation source right near the tumor, allowing higher doses of radiation and reducing side effects. “It gives us another tool to treat a

variety of different cancers. We are doing, which you don’t hear about a lot, brachytherapy for skin cancers,” says Dr. Steinmetz.“Our results using brachytherapy for skin cancer are exceptional. I hope we can provide this cutting-edge treatment to more patients in the future.” Dr. Steinmetz and other physicians at the Atrium’s Compton Center are members of the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program (DCOP). For doctors in DCOP, patients have access to and can be enrolled in clinical trials. DCOP works closely with national cancer trial groups. It evaluates, opens and runs the trials collecting data and informa-

Dr. Ryan Steinmetz, MD tion. Many DCOP clincial trials are offered at the Atrium Medical Center. “I actively enroll patients in clinical trials. We participate in clinical trials because it affords the patients the latest potential advances from a radiation oncology and chemotherapy perspective. It provides them opportunities to receive treatments that may benefit them that aren’t widely available to the public,” Dr. Steinmetz says. Clinical trials advance the field of cancer research by sorting out treatments that work versus treatments that don’t. The Dayton Physicians Network is committed to quality and state-of-the art care through the use of clinical trials. Presently, more than 30 cancer-related clinical trials are offered through the Atrium Medical Center. “Here at the Compton Center at Atrium Hospital, we work in a multidisciplinary fashion utlizing the latest technology and clinical trials to cure patients with less side effects,” adds Dr. Steinmetz.

THE FITTON CENTER FOR CREATIVE ARTS OFFERS DIVERSE PERFORMANCES AND EXHIBITS IN THE CURRENT AND UPCOMING SEASONS

ith a hallmark of building a unique arts experience, the Fitton Center for Creative Arts celebrates its 20th anniversary during its 2013-2014 season with a variety of musical acts, art exhibitions and conversations that will have everyone talking. Last season, the center brought in more than 75,000 attendees, participants and visitors, and it continues to invite guests to open their minds to imagination and inspiration. Pam Gruber, coordinator of public relations, marketing and special events, says the center offers something for everyone. “We like to bring back acts that people enjoyed, while incorporating new entertainment too,” says Gruber. The not-for-profit arts center began as a gift to the Hamilton community by the bicentennial commission and opened its doors in 1993. The Fitton Center has maintained its mission of “building community excellence through the arts and culture, by bringing an assortment of displays,

exhibits and performers to its halls.” Entertainment Plus! is a series of eight programs per season and the shows are on select Saturdays in 2014 with performances including O Sole Trio, a new musical ensemble that captures the essence of Italy on Oct. 25, comedian Dan St. Paul on Nov. 25 and the Franz Klaber Orchestra, which has entertained audiences with its big band sound since 1930, on Jan. 24. The 2015 season is exciting for another reason, the new theater—being built with permanent seating—will be up and running. Fitton Center kicks it off with Franc D’Ambrosio and Glory Crampton, Jazz! Banu Gibson, Helen Welch, and Jazz! Dave Bennett. The NuTrendz Series, a new series, focuses on the younger generations that come to the Fitton Center. Sneak in to see The Ballroom Thieves on Oct. 18 and return to see The Floorwalkers play their independent garage soul on Nov. 8. Mad Anthony Theatre Company’s offbeat plays run Thursdays-Saturdays, with a

Upcoming performances include Love, Loss, and What I Wore, Any Given Monday, and Moonlight and Magnolias. “These are plays you can’t see downtown,” says Gruber. Fitton Family Fridays invite the young of age and the young at heart to the Zak Morgan performance on Oct. 10, the ArtReach performances of Hansel and Gretel on Nov. 7 and The Night Before Christmas on Dec. 12. The Fitton Center also hosts additional innovative artistic exhibits including Celebrating Self (luncheons featuring regional speakers discussing topics that peak guests’ interests), the 47th Greater Hamilton Art Exhibition various exhibitions such as fiber, which presents four artists’ conceptual designs using various fabric mediums, and the Music Café. Where the Wild Things Are THE BROWN DOG CAFÉ SERVES UNCONVENTIONAL FARE SUCH AS WILD BOAR AND VENISON IN AN UNLIKELY PLACE By Alyssa Reck

idden off Interstate 71 in a Blue Ash strip mall, there is a howling good eatery called The Brown Dog Café. Named after the original owners’ chocolate Labrador, Shawn and Saundra McCoy kept the name when they bought the eclectic restaurant 11 years ago. “We have our own identity and are kind of a destination restaurant,” says owner and chef Shawn McCoy. The menu features fish, wild game and homemade desserts that are plated to impress. McCoy’s team takes special care in the presentation of their dishes. Restaurant goers won’t find chicken tenders on

the menu, but the Duck, Buck entrée is a popular choice. Take a dip into Hawaiian waters with their Quinoa-Pumpkin Crunch Tuna, get wild with the Haute Chocolate Wild Boar Tenderloin, or hunt down the Venison Arapas appetizer served with fresh salsa and avocado. “It’s our unique game menu and service that brings us business,” says McCoy. While the restaurant’s exterior blends in with other storefronts, the food stands out following the Brown Dog Café’s motto, “Sit, Stay, Savor.” The restaurant also provides Cincinnati’s own Blue Oven Bakery’s fresh bread to pair with its delicious dishes.

“We have a reputation for quality,” says McCoy. “It’s not your chain restaurant.” All the dishes are made-to-order, so have a glass of wine and enjoy the company while you wait. It Takes a Village MOUNT PLEASANT RETIREMENT VILLAGE OFFERS A VARIETY OF AMENITIES TO MAKE SENIOR LIVING AS COMFORTABLE AND PLEASANT AS POSSIBLE By Danny Restivo

he golden years offer plenty of perks, but deciding where to spend them takes careful planning. At Mount Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe, seniors can enjoy a quiet and cozy environment in a rural setting. With a five-star Medicare rating, and recognition from U.S. News and World Report, the faith-based, not-for-profit community offers a variety of amenities just a mile and a half from Interstate 75. “We have something for everyone,” says Devon Moyer, director of sales and marketing for Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. “We offer affordability at many different price points and a beautiful and unique neighborhood setting.” For 61 years, the Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Service (OPRS) provider, has maintained an affordable destination for retirees. The village offers several living options, including skilled nursing, independent and assisted living on its 110-acre campus. The village has nearly 240 independent living residences and roughly 150 ranch homes, each with their unique floor plans and custom features. Mount Pleasant also helps families dealing with a loved one’s memory loss, providing the only Alzheimer’s support group in Butler County. ore than a third of American adults are now obese and the cost of the epidemic has become equally heavy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was $147 billion in 2008, while the medical costs for obese people were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. “Regardless of how you become obese, it’s incredibly difficult to lose that weight on your own once you’re obese,” says Dr. Brad Watkins, surgeon at the UC Health Weight Loss Center. “We can argue about how people get obese, but once people are obese, surgery is the most effective method of helping them.” Watkins, who also is an assistant professor of surgery at the UC Health Weight Loss Center, has helped patients overcome obesity through surgery for 11 years. Much of his work centers on gastric bypass surgery, a popular option for upending the disease. By reducing the stomach by 80 percent, a golf-ball sized pouch makes a cup of rice a sufficient meal. “Surgery is used as a last resort,” says Watkins. “Most [surgeries] require six months of physician supervised weight loss before surgery becomes an option.” When gastric bypass is necessary, Watkins changes lives. His work not only shrinks waistlines, it allows patients to have a new life. He says it’s not uncommon for patients to come and visit a year after their surgery and they’re total strangers to him. The sleep apnea, joint pain and diabetes are all under control and their outlook on life has turned positive. “There are just a lot of incredibly powerful stories.” –DR

atients of Mercy Health’s Heart Institute in Fairfield are finding strength in numbers through the use of shared medical appointments to fight congestive heart failure. The concept is to bring small groups of patients and their caregivers together regularly to receive and share information. They meet every two weeks for two months to learn about medications and how to live with the disease, obtain lab work, exercise and share experiences. “One of my patients was telling me the other day how great it was to be with other patients going through the same thing to share experiences and tips and to realize you aren’t the only one living with this chronic disease,” says Dr. Wagoner, cardiologist and director of Mercy’s congestive heart failure program. One hospital challenge is to reduce patient readmission rates. Since Mercy began the shared appointments program last October, none of the more than 30 patients through the program has been readmitted. Dr. Wagoner, who also sees patients at Mercy Health Heart Institute in Anderson, has a special affinity for heart disease patients. “Heart disease runs in both sides of my family. My grandfather died at 45 and my mother’s brother also died at 45,” she says. She also has keen interest in women’s heart health. Symptoms in women are subtler than in men, she says. “One of the issues with women is they are so busy, wearing so many different hats—a caregiver, a job, a mom and a wife—that a lot of time they put their own health aside.” –MB

n the early 2000s, Mid-City Pediatrics noticed that a lot of people with children were moving to northern Cincinnati, including out-of-towners. The practice, which initially opened in Pleasant Ridge in 1983, opened the West Chester facility in 2005. Mid-City also realized that there were also medically underserved patients in the community. “One of the better things we’ve done is maintain continuity for families’ needs, to accept Medicaid and allow them to come see us. We were able to be there when they really needed us,” says Dr. Camille Graham, pediatrician at Mid-City Pediatrics and executive community physician leader for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. At Children’s, Dr. Graham acts as a liaison between the hospital, physicians and the community. “We’re trying to improve the system for all the families,” she adds. “It’s been very rewarding.” Dr. Graham, along with other physician leaders, finds out what community physicians need. The leaders also communicate any hospital changes and initiatives, but it’s not always simple. Children’s has more than 14,000 employees, and there are family physicians and other doctors affiliated with the hospital in the community. “They’re on the front line taking care of the children. We keep the focus on the children and do the best thing for the child and the community,” she says. Dr. Graham, whose first job was at a community health center with a teen clinic, has seen two generations of patients from birth to adulthood. “If they’ve been in the practice before, then we can build trust with them and the parent. A United Campaign THE BUTLER COUNTY UNITED WAY AND LOCAL BUSINESSES PARTNER UP TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY By Danny Restivo

he Butler County United Way is gearing up for its annual fundraising effort, the United Way workplace campaign, to support the community. As a global initiative, the workplace campaign has more than one million volunteers and supports a countless number of communities by partnering with businesses across the country. By partnering with reliable and viable local businesses, the Butler County United Way continues to provide Butler County communities with key components of sustainable growth. “We believe education, income and health are the building blocks for a quality life,” says Mitchell Willis, resource development director for the Butler County United Way. “We are all about advancing the common good.” Last year nearly 4,500 individuals and 175 companies participated in the Butler County United Way workplace campaign. By working with businesses throughout the county, the effort raised roughly $2 million last year, with more than $1 million of that getting funneled back into the community. Whether you have five or 500 employees, the workplace campaign offers an opportunity to give back. “At Clark, Schaefer, Hackett & Co. our mission is to better the lives of our clients, people and communities. Supporting the United Way helps us do all three,” says John Venturella, shareholder with Clark, Schaefer, Hackett & Co. and United Way campaign cabinet chair. “I’m involved in the United Way because of its incredible community impact. There’s no effort more vital than helping individuals become successful and self-sufficient.”

The Butler County United Way workplace campaign kicks off Aug. 28 and aims to raise money for local charities and nonprofits throughout the region.

By doing a payroll deduction, or fun events like a dress down workday or an afternoon cornhole tournament, businesses can support local agencies and charities around the region. “The workplace campaign is the heart and soul of United Way globally,” says Willis. “Many companies promote it internally.” The 2014 United Way workplace campaign starts Aug. 28 and runs through Oct. 24, but companies and business can start their campaign earlier or later if necessary. Along with the campaign drives, the Butler County United Way has also orchestrated several other events to raise funds. The Live United Golf Outing will be

held at the Fairfield Greens South Trace on Aug. 8. With the help of community leaders, philanthropists, sponsors and donors, the golf outing has raised $85,000 throughout its five years. On Oct. 4, the United Way Women’s Leadership Council will partner with Operation Pumpkin for a 5K Zombie Run/Walk. Don your zombie makeup, tattered clothing and head to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton before hitting the pavement at 4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Shared Harvest’s Backpack Program. “Philanthropy is based on individual choice,” says Willis. “Anything you can do to give back to your community is huge.” n
