his list is excerpted from the 2014 topDentists™ list, a database; which includes listings of more than 50 general dentists and specialists practicing in Northern Kentucky. SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the
geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Dentistry is both an art and a science, says Dr. Masoud Hekmatyar of Fort Thomas Family Dentistry. “While I stress the importance of the health of the teeth and gums, it is equally rewarding to see a patient receive the smile they have always wanted with cosmetic dentistry,” says Dr. Hekmatyar, who has been practicing dentistry for 20 years. Some of these services include veneers, whitening, bonding and crowns. He includes, “Helping a patient achieve dental health and confidence in the way they look is a great feeling.” Dr. Hekmatyar opened his office in Fort Thomas earlier this year after practicing in nearby Newport for a number of years. Dr. Hekmatyar became interested in dentistry working as a volunteer in University Hospital’s oral surgery clinic while studying biochemistry at the University of Cincinnati. After graduating from UC, he earned his dental degree from Temple University in Philadephia and did his residency at the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Hekmatyar says he and his staff are committed to providing quality dental care in a relaxed environment. His office caters to each patient to be sure they are comfortable. “For people taking off work, it‘s nice to be able to create a crown in one day,” she says. Besides Dr. Shearer, the practice includes Doctors Pamela Walden and Lupe Rojas. The three dentists have known each other for years. “Shelley and I worked at the same practice in Louisville while we were waiting for our husbands to finish their residencies,” says Dr. Walden. Dr. Shearer says Dr. Rojas was one of the first people she met when she moved here a decade ago. “What sets our practice apart is that some dentists have closed their doors to some parts of dentistry such as pediatrics or cosmetics, root canals or extractions and implants,” says Dr. Shearer. “We provide all those services here and
within the group we can do most services in house.” Dr. Shearer says she got interested in dentistry while attending the University of Kentucky as an undergraduate. She completed her dental degree at University of Louisville. Dr. Walden, a native of tiny Rush, Ky., near Ashland, earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and also earned her dental degree from University of Louisville. Dr. Rojas, born and raised in Spain, has been studying and working in the United States for more than 20 years. She received her doctorate in dental surgery from Indiana University after earning bachelor’s degree in biology and master’s degree in genetics.
