A Medical Needle in a Haystack F
inding a new doctor is not fun. My dermatologist retired at the end of last year, making it necessary for me to find a new one. I had been using my doctor for more than 10 years; how was I supposed to find a new one? Would he or she understand my needs? Would the new doctor listen to concerns like my previous one? And how far would I need to drive to see this new doctor? Luckily, our region is full of wonderful physicians in every specialty. The doctor you need is already here; you just need to find him or her. It’s with this in mind that we present our annual Doctors of Northern Kentucky list. We’ve listed more than 800 doctors in 64 specialties to help you find the doctor that best fits you. We’ve also featured several of the physicians, providing greater insight into the region’s medical landscape. If you’re comfortable with your current doctor, though, we have other stories that are also worth reading. Mary Casey-Sturk discovers the spooky places in Northern Kentucky and Ryan Clark looks into a special sports internship program just for NKU students. In addition, this issue introduces a new regular section: the Social Datebook. This new calendar specifically lists Northern Kentucky nonprofit and community events, ensuring you know when the next gala or 5K race is coming up. Have an event you’d like us to feature? Please visit our website at bestofnky.com to add it to our calendar for free. Eventually, I did find myself a new dermatologist. If anything, she understands my skin even better than my previous doctor did. The process of finding that new doctor may not be fun, but the end result is definitely worthwhile. Sincerely,

Frank and Pat Sommerkamp are the worthy recipients of this year’s Devou Cup given by the Northern Kentucky Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation to honor those whose personal philanthropy and engagement have improved the quality of life in our regional community. The Sommerkamps need no introduction because they have been generous with their time, talent and treasure for many years. There isn’t a local organization that has not benefited in some way from their efforts. Frank and Pat, both life-long Northern Kentuckians, have been married for 61 years and have three children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Frank retired as vice president of Government Affairs at Cincinnati Bell and has been involved in leadership positions with too many local organizations to name—but Forward Quest, Thomas More, and St. Elizabeth Healthcare Foundation are on the list. Pat helped shape many of the region’s education initiatives and was a consultant on education and training programs with GE, UC and others. She’s currently a business professor at Thomas More College. Their awards—from every possible business and civic organization—are legion. The Devou Cup is icing on the cake—and couldn’t have found a better home.
The Center for Great Neighborhoods in Covington, Tom Dibello and his team, completed a new Latonia Cardinals Community public park recently, expanding the school’s playground to create an intergenerational facility. In addition, the school now has a vegetable garden and an indoor hydroponics lab.
A GRAND BIRTHDAY Oakley Farris celebrated his 90th birthday in style at the Baker Hunt Art & Cultural Center in Covington. He and his bride, Eva, arrived by carriage to celebrate his “90th Trip Around the Sun” — which included a Happy Birthday song by Thomas More College President Dave Armstrong. The Farrises have been generous benefactors in the region. NKU even published the Oakley & Eva G. Farris “Donor Impact Report” in celebration of their philanthropic influence.

NKY Q&A
Nine Questions with Geoffrey Mearns, NKU President BY DANN Y RE S TIVO
N
ow that we’ve delved into another school year, we thought this was a perfect opportunity to chat with Northern Kentucky University President Geoffrey Mearns. We spoke with him about the changing academic landscape and how NKU keeps itself ahead of the pack. After coming from Cleveland State University more than two years ago, what is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as the president of NKU? I learned the value of engaging the entire university community in developing a vision for our collective future. As administrators, we don’t have a monopoly on all of the good ideas. To the contrary, we need to foster a culture where everyone is encouraged and inspired to share their thoughts and suggestions. What does NKU have to do to maintain a reputation as a top-tier university in a region populated with long-established colleges? In order to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment, NKU must continue to develop quality academic programs that attract outstanding students and that prepare them for successful careers and meaningful lives. What are your primary goals for 20142015 academic year? I have two principal goals this year. First, we must identify the programs and activities that will be included in our health innovations center, in which the state has invested $97 million. Second, I will travel all across the Commonwealth to spread the word that something special is happening at NKU.
12
NKY MAGAZINE WINTER 2014
Debt-concerns have become a major factor in determining where prospective students go college. How is NKU ensuring that students get the most for their dollar? NKU provides a great return on a student’s investment. In fact, last year a national organization ranked NKU as the top college or university in Kentucky for financial return on investment—by computing tuition and career earnings. In order to maintain this ranking, the University has invested more money in financial aid to our students, even though financial support from the state continues to decline.
Geoffrey Mearns, president of Northern Kentucky University
What NKU programs do you see playing a larger role in the university’s future? Why? NKU will continue to be a comprehensive university that offers a wide array of quality programs. We will continue to expand our distinctive informatics programs, and the health innovations center will incorporate a large number of health-related programs. How have reductions in federal and state funding affected NKU, and what is the university doing to mitigate the impact? The continued decline in state funding has presented many challenges. For example, we have fewer faculty and staff to serve our large student body compared to many of our peers. We are using technology to become more efficient. But there is no real substitute for the personal relationships between a student and a good teacher or an informed advisor.
How do you think the athletic program has managed to compete against larger schools since moving to Division I two years ago? As we complete the transition to NCAA Division I, I am proud of the competitive success of our teams. Our student-athletes have exceeded expectations because of their talent, tenacity, and courage—and because of the support that they’ve received from our coaches and our fans. As a former cross-country runner, how often do you run now? I run four or five miles virtually every day. What’s your favorite part about being President of NKU? The best part of my job is the opportunity to meet so many interesting and inspiring people. ■

Take my Doctor … Please “A DOCTOR GAVE A MAN SIX MONTHS TO LIVE. THE MAN COULDN’T PAY HIS BILL, SO HE GAVE HIM ANOTHER SIX MONTHS.” As a kid growing up in Ludlow, no night was bigger than Sunday night. As the closing act for each and every weekend, the Robinson clan would gather around the black and white Zenith for The Ed Sullivan Show. The classic variety show, Sullivan brought the world to Elm Street once a week. Each of us had our favorite portion of The Ed Sullivan Show. My sisters watched for the rock ‘n’ roll groups that were introduced to the world via Sullivan’s stage. My mom watched for the dancers. But my dad and me, we could not wait for the comedian to come on. Henny Youngman—the King of the One Liners—was my dad’s favorite. So whenever Youngman would be on Sullivan, I’d try to memorize his entire routine. Then I’d spend the rest of the week trying to get a laugh out of my dad by doing my best Henny Youngman impersonation. Until the day he died, I could always make my dad laugh.
“A MAN GOES TO A PSYCHIATRIST. THE DOCTOR SAYS, ‘YOU’RE CRAZY.’ THE MAN SAYS, ‘I WANT A SECOND OPINION!’ THE DOCTOR SAYS ‘OKAY, YOU’RE UGLY TOO!’” When my editor told me that the theme of this edition of NKY Magazine was the region’s best doctors, all I could think about was Henny Youngman. His violin in hand, Youngman’s funniest rim-shot laden bits were about doctors. The fact that talk of doctors brought Youngman to mind is odd, because my childhood doctor, Ludlow’s Charley Justice, Jr., seemingly lacked any sense of humor whatsoever. At least, I don’t remember any humor after he gave me the shot of penicillin that suddenly determined I was, in fact, allergic to penicillin.
Growing up in Northern Kentucky in the ‘60s, health care was a city matter. Each small community had one or two general practitioners who made house calls in the morning and saw patients in the office after lunch. The doctor who showed up at your doorstep was a pediatrician, a specialist, a generalist, a psychiatrist and usually a neighbor. For those too young to remember “house calls,” think reverse walk-in clinics where your doctor actually came to you. When your neighbor would see the familiar car of the town doctor parked in front of your house, the party lines would light up. And if you don’t remember house calls, you have no conception of “party lines.” I don’t have enough space in this column, but ask anyone over 50 what it would be like to share your smart phone with the person Comedian Henny Youngman next door—but I digress. orthern Kentucky is steeped in history, so it’s no surprise that there are many allegedly haunted places dotting both the city and rural landscapes. Here is a short list of opportunities to learn more our paranormal neighbors. Helping you discover both the history and haunts of two local cities are American Legacy Tours. They offer up Covington is Haunted and Newport is Haunted tours in September and October. Join them as they lead you by lantern light through the streets to discover what is lurking behind locked doors. To purchase tickets in advance and check tour dates, visit americanlegacytours.com. Stops include: the 1883 Campbell County Court House (where the notorious murderers of Pearl Bryant were hanged) and the Thompson House (once home to John Thompson—inventor of the Thompson Submachine Gun aka the “Tommy Gun”). Tours last up to two hours. Wear comfortable shoes and leave your fears at home. Things going “bump in the night” at your house? You might want to contact the nonprofit organization, Paranormal Investigators of Northern Kentucky (PINK). With nine years of experience, these local ghost hunters can discover if you have a spirit on your hands, or just a spirited furnace moaning out for repairs. The team has led investigations at Covington’s Carnegie Theatre and the Baker Hunt Center (starting point of the Covington is Haunted tour) as well as private homes throughout Northern Kentucky. Averaging 24 investigations a year, they incorporate technology including infrared cameras, digital audio recorders and environmental measurement devices to document and capture the paranormal activity. The resulting findings are shared with the homeowner and resolutions are discussed. When asked if there were any “haunted hot spots” in Northern Kentucky, founder Mike Palmer responded, “If you look at

If you believe everything you hear, the whole town is haunted.” Want to become an amateur ghost hunter yourself? Visit Wanda Kay’s Ghost Shop in Newport for the latest in ghost hunting equipment, gifts, souvenirs and books. Wanda Kay has been interested in the paranormal since childhood and recently wrapped up a decade-long career at Bobby Mackey’s. She also offers tours of the Thompson House in Newport and the Sedamsville Rectory in Cincinnati. Visitors will be struck by the depth of her knowledge of both the history and the legends that surround these buildings. The Ghost Shop is also home to psychics, events and seminars year round. restaurant where sports motifs like “The Kickoff” and “The Cactus League” make up subheads on the menu, Willie’s Sports Cafe in Covington has been serving its customers since 1992. In fact, one customer, Karen “Kay” Thompson has been coming to the same Willie’s location for 20 years. “This is my spot,” says Thompson. “You can’t beat it.” Hanging on the walls are jerseys from sports teams such as the Bengals and the Reds, and, depending on the day, customers can watch their team play on one of the 46 TVs. “It’s a casual American dining restaurant,” says Brad Orr, owner. “It has a sports theme, finger food and drinks.” Servers dish out plates of Willie’s wings and what is known as the Heartstopper, a heap of waffle fries and mounds of Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, bacon, onions and ranch dressing. Both are popular menu items, even for lunch, though Orr says his favorite is the Blackened Grouper Sandwich on marble rye. When asked about the type of feedback Orr receives about the restaurant, he says, “I have the same guys come to lunch every day. I know their name and they know mine. That’s the kind of feedback I look for.” Open M-F 11 a.m.2:30 a.m. Willie’s Sports Café. 401 Crescent Ave., Covington. 859-581-1500. williescovington.com. n

DOCTORS OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY BY THE EDITORS
I
t can be difficult to keep your health a priority. With our busy lives, visiting the doctor can fall to the wayside. With that in mind, we’ve made the task of finding a doctor slightly easier by providing a comprehensive list of 809 doctors in 64 specialties throughout Northern Kentucky. Our directory is based off the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure’s July 2014 list of physicians (MDs and DOs) throughout Boone, Kenton, Grant and Campbell counties. We checked the list for the most current office addresses and phone numbers, eliminating those still licensed but reported as inactive by the state and retaining those with offices elsewhere but listed as still practicing in Northern Kentucky. Many physicans have multiple office locations, but only one location was included in the list. Doctors are listed under the speciality they are listed with on the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure’s list. Questions or concerns regarding listing content should be directed to the Board of Medical Licensure. Visit bestofnky.com for an online searchable database.

T
he reputation of integrative medicine has vastly changed since Dr. Mary Ann Barnes became a practicing physician more than 30 years ago.
“They thought I was a quack, and some people still wonder,” says Dr. Barnes jokingly. She now serves as the assistant director and third year coordinator for St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Barnes started experimenting with Eastern medicine, like acupuncture, when it was far from the norm. Her venture into alternative treatment is indicative of her diverse concern for medical and social issues. Her efforts include supporting local clinics for homeless, teaching domestic violence awareness in the Ukraine and authoring Fat Cells, Beauty and You! An Exploration of the Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Dimensions of Weight Management for a Lifetime. Dr. Barnes passion for helping others, which led her into the family medicine field, still drives her today. She hopes the resident doctors she mentors will find the same satisfaction she has. “I think the biggest thing that I hope they come away with is that we’re part of a profession where we have a responsibility to take care of everyone in the population, including the people who don’t have resources or money. We’re obliged by the oath and the honor that we were given.”

Dr. Sheena Boury FAMILY MEDICINE
Christ Hospital Physicians • Fort Wright
F
amily medicine allows physicians to work with a diverse set of age groups experiencing a broad set of symptoms.
Dr. Sheena Boury, a family physician with The Christ Hospital in Fort Wright, decided to enter the field for exactly that reason. “I find all specialties very interesting, but family medicine incorporates all of it,” says Dr. Boury, a British native. “It’s something I really enjoy.” After leaving her small village outside of London, Dr. Boury traveled to the Cayman Islands for medical school. Her work then took her to Maine and Michigan before landing at The Christ Hospital, where she’s been for five years. Along with family practice, Dr. Boury’s work includes wound care and treating patients with a range of problems stemming from diabetes, traumatic injuries and surgeries. “It’s really interesting. It brings in a different population of patients who are sometimes more sick, which is always a challenge,” says Dr. Boury. “It’s rewarding because you can see the healing take shape week by week.” Since her work covers such a wide spectrum, the new health care laws have left a large footprint on her daily job. “I think choices for patients are going to get smaller, unfortunately,” says Dr. Boury. “But I think general access to care is getting better… Now you can email your doctor or access your medical records online.”

Dr. Justin J. Kruer PAIN MEDICINE
Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine • Erlanger
D
r. Justin J. Kruer of Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is no stranger to treating patients with chronic pain. After completing his undergraduate degree at The University of Notre Dame and medical school at the University of Louisville, Dr. Kruer decided that he enjoyed helping people with this particular ailment.
“It was an opportunity to interact with patients, get to know them and help them improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Kruer. Dr. Kruer is an anesthesiologist and is fellowship trained in Pain Management, licensed in both Kentucky and Arizona. Practicing for seven years, Dr. Kruer has been at the Beacon Erlanger location for nearly a year. “Chronic pain management has its role in medicine,” says Dr. Kruer. “With an aging population and people living longer, I can see this industry expanding over the next 10-20 years.” Using a multidisciplinary treatment approach, Dr. Kruer’s team helps patients with pain of all varieties—such as headaches, lower back, neck, nerve, pain related to cancer and joint pain. Treatments range from injections to radiofrequency ablation to intrathecal pump management. “It’s rewarding to see people get out of chronic pain and live a normal, happy life,” says Dr. Kruer.

PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT MEDICINE
C
hildren are often easier to treat than their parents, says Dr. Douglas Poon, a Florence pediatrician.
“It’s fun taking care of kids,” he says. “Not everybody thinks that, but children are generally healthy and you can make more changes in a child’s life than you often can in an adult. Adults tend to be set in their ways and it’s harder to have an influence on them. With a kid, you have more of an opportunity to have an impact.” The youngest of seven children of a Cincinnati ophthalmologist, Dr. Poon says even as a high school student at St. Xavier he knew he was destined for medical care. After pre-med at Boston College and while earning his medical degree at St. Louis University, he was draw to pediatric care. “I really enjoyed my pediatric rotation. At that point, I had pretty much decided that was what I would do,” he says. His patients range from infants to students in their 20s, and he deals with a full range of illnesses. “We’re still very much primary care in that we see kids with minor illnesses like ear infections, injuries: all the common things. But we also treat very complex cases such as congenital diseases: heart problems, asthma, diabetes and other chronic conditions. And we see a lot of children with psychiatric issues, obesity, depression, anxiety and attention issues.” www.BestofNKY.com

rowing up in Lexington, Robert Sisk enjoyed chemistry and photography.
He’s put both into practice as one of the area’s leading ophthalmologists at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Dr. Sisk, who earned his medical degree from the University of Kentucky and did his residency at the University of Cincinnati, says he finds patients really care about their vision. “With a lot of chronic diseases, people aren’t willing to make lifestyle changes to be able to do anything to modify the course of their disease. But people care a lot about their vision and are willing to make changes,” he says. As a retinal surgeon, Dr. Sisk sees patients from all age groups: from children dealing with diabetes, a leading cause of blindness for those under 50, to mature adults dealing with age-related macular degeneration. He says he’s particularly interested in genetic-related retinal disease. “Previously, all we were able to do was provide a diagnosis and provide some basic genetic counseling... But now, there’s some great research using stem cells and gene therapy that’s offering patients some hope for something that will change their course.”

hoosing to follow a career in medicine was easy for Dr. Sarah Weinel of Dermatology Specialists of NKY.
“I loved science from as early as I can remember,” she says. “I really didn’t know which field I wanted to go into when I first started medical school, but then I took a class in dermatology and knew I was home.” Dr. Weinel attended the University of Kentucky for her undergrad, University of Louisville for her medical degree, University of Cincinnati for internal medicine, and completed her residency at the University of Louisville. She has been practicing for nine years, six of which have been in private practice. On a given day, Dr. Weinel sees anywhere from 35-40 patients, or is performing skin surgeries. “I never know what I see when I walk into the room,” she says. “[Dermatology] is a combination of cerebral and procedural medicine.” Weinel describes the process of assessing each condition as “being a detective.” She says that when she can treat the condition, she has the chance to not only improve the condition itself but also the confidence and psyche of the patient. New advances in the field include using genetics as a target for chemotherapy, new treatments for psoriasis and the use of lasers.

Shearer Family & Cosmetic Dentistry
Specializing in Cosmetic Dentistry Shearer Family and Cosmetic Dentistry 1335 Hansel Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042 859-647-7068 shelleyshearerdmd.com Dentistry is constantly changing, and Shearer Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Florence embraces the latest technology. “We’re very technologically advanced,” says Dr. Shelley Shearer, who started the practice a decade ago. “All of us are open-minded about technology and the advancements in dentistry.” One example: Shearer has the ability to offer patients same-day crowns with a computer-automated system that creates a digital image of the tooth in the patient’s mouth to build the crown.
“For people taking off work, it‘s nice to be able to create a crown in one day,” she says. Besides Dr. Shearer, the practice includes Doctors Pamela Walden and Lupe Rojas. The three dentists have known each other for years. “Shelley and I worked at the same practice in Louisville while we were waiting for our husbands to finish their residencies,” says Dr. Walden. Dr. Shearer says Dr. Rojas was one of the first people she met when she moved here a decade ago. “What sets our practice apart is that some dentists have closed their doors to some parts of dentistry such as pediatrics or cosmetics, root canals or extractions and implants,” says Dr. Shearer. “We provide all those services here and
within the group we can do most services in house.” Dr. Shearer says she got interested in dentistry while attending the University of Kentucky as an undergraduate. She completed her dental degree at University of Louisville. Dr. Walden, a native of tiny Rush, Ky., near Ashland, earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and also earned her dental degree from University of Louisville. Dr. Rojas, born and raised in Spain, has been studying and working in the United States for more than 20 years. She received her doctorate in dental surgery from Indiana University after earning bachelor’s degree in biology and master’s degree in genetics.

TOP D ENTISTS OF NORTHERN K ENTUCK Y
OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY BY THE EDITORS
T
his list is excerpted from the 2014 topDentists™ list, a database; which includes listings of more than 50 general dentists and specialists practicing in Northern Kentucky. The list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at www.usatopdentists.com. For more information call 706-364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; email info@usatopdentists.com or visit www. usatopdentists.com
SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the
geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Dentistry is both an art and a science, says Dr. Masoud Hekmatyar of Fort Thomas Family Dentistry. “While I stress the importance of the health of the teeth and gums, it is equally rewarding to see a patient receive the smile they have always wanted with cosmetic dentistry,” says Dr. Hekmatyar, who has been practicing dentistry for 20 years. Some of these services include veneers, whitening, bonding and crowns. He includes, “Helping a patient achieve dental health and confidence in the way they look is a great feeling.” Dr. Hekmatyar opened his office in Fort Thomas earlier this year after practicing in nearby Newport for a number of years. The new location is conveniently located in a medical complex that has new state-of-the-
art equipment including digital X-rays. Dr. Hekmatyar became interested in dentistry working as a volunteer in University Hospital’s oral surgery clinic while studying biochemistry at the University of Cincinnati. After graduating from UC, he earned his dental degree from Temple University in Philadephia and did his residency at the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Hekmatyar says he and his staff are committed to providing quality dental care in a relaxed environment. His office caters to each patient to be sure they are comfortable. The office offers Wi-Fi and has televisions in treatment rooms for the patients’ enjoyment. Dr. Hekmayar offers a complete range of services for the whole family including cosmetic dentistry. www.BestofNKY.com

Catalyst
A for NKY’s Urban Revitalization BY MIKE BOY ER
F
rom her office in Covington’s RiverCenter, Jeanne Schroer sees the development in downtown Cincinnati, but she doesn’t see it stopping at the river’s edge. “I think what we’re doing is an extension of the redevelopment of the Cincinnati urban core,” says the president and CEO of the Catalytic Fund Corp. of Northern Kentucky. “We are an extension of what’s happening in Over-the-Rhine, downtown Cincinnati and the Banks. I view our region’s downtown as a complete urban core that includes assets on both sides of the river and happens to have a beautiful river as its Main Street.” The private, nonprofit Catalytic Fund, which came out of the Vision 2015 urban renaissance initiative, is having an impact on Northern Kentucky’s urban neighborhoods after getting off to a slow start due to the 2008 recession. The fund was launched less than a month before the Sept. 15, 2008 bankruptcy filing of the Lehman Brothers investment firm, which spurred the major financial crisis. It took four more years to assemble the $10 million in investment pledges for the fund. “At the time, it was frustrating,” says Schroer, a real estate professional who has led the fund since its formation. “But it allowed us to put together a very detailed business plan and real estate development strategy, so that when the fund finally was completed at the end of 2012, we had targeted exactly what we wanted to do.”

passion and skill” to her role as CEO “The Fund has already accomplished a lot, but that’s nothing compared to what it will do over the next 18 months,” he says. The fund’s biggest investment to date was $511,000 for the restoration of downtown Covington’s historic Mutual Building at 619-629 Madison Ave. It was one of six funding sources for the $2.6 million renovation project begun in July to transform the vacant, three-story downtown building into 11,000 square feet of retail space and 15 market-rate apartments. “What we do is help to build what I call the funding stack. We assisted the developer with obtaining city grants and loans, we applied for a Duke Energy revitalization grant and assisted with arranging the first mortgage loan from Citizens Bank,” says Schroer. Although it has been compared with the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC), the private nonprofit that has energized urban redevelopment in downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine, the Catalytic Fund is not exactly the same. “We have similar goals and objectives as 3CDC, but we’re sort of a hybrid with elements of 3CDC and the Cincinnati Development Fund,” says Schroer. As a non-traditional lender, the Catalytic
Fund doesn’t provide primary financing, but what’s known as gap financing. “We fill the gap between what the primary lender will provide and what a developer’s able to provide in equity,” says Schroer. “We wouldn’t get in unless we’re needed to make the project come together. That’s one of our criteria: That the project needs our financing to be executed. All of our investments are very strategic.” For example, at the Northern Kentucky Scholar House, on West Sixth Street, in Newport, the Catalytic Fund provided $500,000 in standby financing to allow the $8.7 million project by Newport’s Neighborhood Foundations (the Housing Authority of Newport), Brighton Properties and the Model Group to move forward. The novel project, which will create 48 apartments and on-site childcare and other services for single parents pursing a two or four-year college degree, is financed using low-income housing tax credits and other grants. But because all the grants weren’t awarded when the application for the tax credits was due, the Catalytic Fund stepped in. “We were prepared to fund with a standby loan,” says Schroer. “As turned out, they got the grants and the project was better off funded that way.”
The Fund, which has a staff of five, also provides a variety of real estate services such as deal structuring. For example, the Fund helped arrange a complicated property swap to allow the $4.8 million Kentucky Career Center to occupy the former Robke Chevrolet site on Madison Avenue and expand the Northern Kentucky Life Learning Center into the former Stewart Iron Works building on 18th Street in Covington. “We didn’t invest any money, but we basically spent about 18 months putting the transaction together,” she says. The Fund also is applying to the U.S. Treasury to obtain the certification needed to apply for an allocation of new market tax credits and other financing for redevelopment projects. Schroer says she’d like to eventually double the Fund to $20 million. “We could undertake more projects and larger projects,” she says. “I’m impatient. I want things to happen a lot quicker, but I feel good about what’s happening.” ■ www.BestofNKY.com

The STEM of Growth Covington Catholic’s STEM program shapes minds for the future BY DANN Y RE S TIVO
I
n 2010, 7.6 million Americans had STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) jobs. By 2018, The U.S. Department of Commerce expects that number to increase by 1.3 million. “This is definitely where the jobs are heading,” says Bob Lind, STEM coordinator for Covington Catholic High School. With burgeoning opportunity on the horizon, Covington Catholic announced a partnership with Project Lead the Way earlier this year. The nonprofit delivers world-class STEM curriculum and professional development models to more than 5,000 schools across the United States. The program engages educators, as well as community and corporate entities, to establish skills for a variety of industries. The 2015-2016 school year marks the first year for the program, so Lind is gearing the introductory curriculum toward freshman and sophomores. The courses are available for college credit, with institutions like the University of Kentucky accepting six credit hours for PLTW courses. Lind plans to start underclassmen out with an engineering and design class, where they can apply math, science and engineering concepts. Students will work individually, as well as in teams, to design solutions for a variety of problems. In doing so, they will experiment with 3-D imaging and other engineering software. Lind’s other introductory course, principles of engineering, will explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures, automation and other hands-on concepts. “Project-based learning is a great way to cement learning concepts,” says Lind, “We can watch a video on how to change a tire, but until you actually do it with hands on, you won’t have a full understanding.” Covington Catholic’s STEM program will also incorporate specialization courses like aerospace engineering, biological engineer-

ing and civil engineering. In the PLTW curriculum, students engage in open-ended problem solving where they learn and apply the engineering design process. They also use the same software and programs companies throughout the world use. According to a study of more than 56,000 Indiana high school graduates by the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education at Indiana University, students who participated in PLTW were three to four times more likely to study engineering than students who didn’t participate in the
program. PLTW students who took three or more STEM courses in high school were six times more likely to study STEM in college than their peers who had not taken PLTW in high school. It’s especially encouraging considering that a STEM student with a bachelor’s degree earns, on average, 26 percent more than non-STEM professionals. “We’ve been hearing over and over that American students are falling behind, and we’re seeing a lot of engineers coming from other countries… We need to give students a little exposure and see if it’s something they want to pursue,” says Lind. ■

Cool as Ice ALS Ice Bucket Challenge accepted by River Ridge Elementary principal BY ALYSSA RECK

n a surprise to many, River Ridge Elementary School featured Principal Shawna Harney during a “breaking news” student television newscast in August. “It’s a silly, fun thing that I know our students are seeing on social media and television,” says Harney. “We wanted them to know what is the purpose of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge so we incorporated some teaching behind it.” One afternoon, 15 students stood around her, three of those students each with a bucket to pour freezing water over Harney. “Students always get a kick out of their principals and educators doing things like this,” says Harney. “We want to make it meaningful for them, too.” The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge became popular in July and has been seen over and over again in the news. Public figures, actors, singers and sports teams have accepted the challenge to dump an ice water bucket over their head and make a donation to the ALS Association for research, treatments and finding a cure for ALS. “It’s trickled down to me,” says Harney, who was issued the challenge by a colleague. Harney says that along with the fifth graders newscast of her completing the ice bucket challenge, the fifth graders also did research, learning what ALS is so that elementary students could have some understanding and awareness of why ALS is important. ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the ability of the brain to start and control muscle movement. Those diagnosed with ALS can become paralyzed and eventually die from the disease. In mid-August, the total number of donations topped $53.3 million, according to a press release by the ALS As-
sociation. “It’s a giant task but one worthy,” says Jessica Dykes, director of public relations and community development in the Kenton County School District. “Explaining what ALS is fosters in elementary students compassion and awareness of what i s going on in t he world.” Dykes says that Harney is doing service learning, which combines educational instruction with community service, and is one of the Kenton County School District’s goals. “We maximize every moment we have with our st udent s,” s ay s Dykes. Citi Celebrates a Quarter Century in NKY The company continues its commitment to Northern Kentucky BY MIKE BOY ER

n 1989, the Internet was in its infancy, the Soviet Union was crumbling and gasoline cost an average of $1.02 a gallon. That same year, New York-based Citicorp established a credit card collections operation off Mineola Pike in Erlanger. Today, the Internet is everywhere, the Soviet Union is gone and gasoline, well, that’s changed, too. And Citicorp’s operation has blossomed into one of the bank’s largest credit customer service operations in North America, employing 2,500 operating out of two interconnected buildings on Houston Road in Florence. Most of the employees deal with credit customers in some fashion, says Niki Clare, vice president, communications and public affairs. On Oct. 3, the global financial services company will host a town meeting at the Florence site with community partners, senior executives and others to spotlight its successes over the last 25 years and discuss what it needs to do to sustain that success. The event will be the focal point of a week of activities, including an employee appreciation picnic celebrating Citi’s 25th anniversary in Northern Kentucky. “For more than two decades, our employees have truly demonstrated their commitment and dedication to Citi, making this a valuable site for the company,” says Tina Shell, site president. “As we celebrate this milestone, it is important for us to recognize the history of our accomplishments, and also plan for the future.” Citicor p, the global company, was originally drawn to Northern Kentucky by a number of factors: air service through Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Interna-

tional Airport, the cost of doing business, availability of education resources and quality of life. Initial employment grew quickly to about 1,000 employees and the company needed more room. In 1997, it moved to a new building in Boone County, a 180-acre site purchased from the Covington Catholic Diocese. It expanded again five years later with the addition of Citibank Client Services in 2002, swelling employment to more than 2,400. Education has been a big part of the Citi story in Northern Kentucky. In 2002, former Florence site leader Greg Morton and Dr. Edward Hughes, president/CEO of Gateway Community and Technical College, collaborated on a unique partnership. Gateway provides a variety of career development resources and classes so Citi employees can begin or complete college credentials at the company’s campus. The program includes a Gateway academic advisor who spends 20 hours a week on site, a nine-week career discovery class
to help employees define career paths and academic goals and on-site classes toward certificates and degrees. Some 2,900 Citi employees have been served by the partnership. Nearly 950 Citi employees have participated in the career discovery class since its inception and more than 330 have achieved at least one grade level promotion, the company says. Citi has replicated parts of the program at its other sites around the country and Gateway has introduced the program with other area companies. Earlier this year, the Gateway-Citi partnership received the national Bellwether Award for Workforce Development from the Community College Futures Assembly and the University of Florida. Gateway is one of more than 35 community partners Citi has in Northern Kentucky. Giving back is also a big part of the Citi story. Employees contribute more than 17,000 volunteer hours annually to various organizations. ■
