NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK April 21-27, 2013

The AmeriCorps Pledge I will get things done for America to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier. I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities. Faced with apathy, I will take action.

National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through service. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership. The week draws the support and endorsement of the president and Congress, governors, mayors and municipal leaders, as well as corporate and community groups across the country. Through programs such as the President's Volunteer Service Award, Daily Point of Light Award, and the Extra Mile – Points of Light Volunteer Pathway, we recognize individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities and the tremendous impact they are making on our country's most critical challenges yearround. Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground. Faced with adversity, I will persevere. I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond. I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.

AmeriCorps and RSVP Honored at Venice City Hall

Every day, in cities across America, national service is solving tough problems and strengthening communities. Whether supporting food banks and homeless shelters, restoring city parks, building homes, managing community volunteers, providing health services, or tutoring and mentoring students, national service members help mayors tackle tough problems. To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors across the country participated in the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 9, 2013. On this day, mayors held public events and used traditional and social media to highlight the value and impact of national service to the nation’s cities. At the Venice City Hall, Mayor John Holic presented proclamation to members and staff of AmeriCorps Serving Suncoast Seniors and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), two national service programs sponsored by Senior Friendship Centers. AmeriCorps Program Director Jenna DeLorey made a statement spotlighting the impact of the three AmeriCorps members serving in Venice. In the last two quarters, Donna Tortora, Linda Shane, and Jane Van Emburgh served 500 seniors, assisted 81 caregivers, and recruited 59 volunteers who served 1,576 hours at Senior Friendship Centers. Why a Day of Recognition? As solution-focused local elected officials, mayors understand the key role citizens play in meeting community needs. A coordinated day of recognition presents a unique opportunity to highlight the key role that national service plays in solving pressing problems. This initiative was led by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors; the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS); Cities of Service; and other organizations. As the federal agency for service and volunteering, CNCS annually engages more than four million citizens in service at 70,000 sites across the country. CNCS leverages federal and private funds to support organizations like Senior Friendship Centers that achieve measurable results where the need is greatest. To learn more about the AmeriCorps and RSVP programs at Senior Friendship Centers, please contact Jenna DeLorey at 941-556-3208 and Cathaleen at 941-556-3274, respectively.
