Wanted: someone with medical and dental experience to split time between a Venice and Sarasota clinic PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Senior Friendship Centers is looking for AmeriCorps members for service opportunities that begin Aug. 1, 2013 and end Jul. 31, 2014. As an AmeriCorps member, you’ll gain new skills and experiences—and you’ll find the tremendous satisfaction that comes from helping others. If you’re a U.S. citizen or resident aged 18 or older with personal transportation who can commit to serving 36 hours per week for a year, AmeriCorps could be a great opportunity for you! In addition to receiving health insurance and a modest living stipend ($238/week), upon successful completion of the program you’ll receive a $5,500 Education Award to pay for college or repay school loans. (AmeriCorps members aged at least 55 at the time they begin service also have the option of gifting their award to a child or grandchild.) If you are selected and your placement is a good fit, you may apply to extend your service for another year. AmeriCorps Serving Suncoast Seniors Member/ Health Services Member
FLSA CLASS: Non-Exempt
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Health Services PURPOSE OF POSITION: To assist in the coordination and implementation of Health Services and to coordinate and conduct community outreach to enhance Health Services’ programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To provide patient-centered medical and dental services to patients in an outpatient setting in both Sarasota and Venice, Florida. (Please note that the position requires experience but no specific certification or licensing is required. Experience in one area with willingness to learn another area will also be considered.) Be a positive representative for AmeriCorps and Senior Friendship Centers. Utilize previous medical and dental experience to educate the community through outreach for Senior Friendship Centers, AmeriCorps, and the Health Services Clinic. Expand programs for the Center and Clinic. Interact with patients and assist medical personnel in a multi-physician outpatient clinic on a daily basis. Assist patients through appointment verification, chart review, and room setup. Coordinate community outreach. Assist with community education series being developed to teach chronic disease self management skills. Assist in recruiting volunteers for Health Services. Must comply with all Senior Friendship Centers Personnel Policies. Must protect the safety and health of the staff and others. Must observe and follow the provision of Senior Friendship Centers’ accident prevention, safety and reporting of injury, accident and incident policies as prescribed in the Employee Handbook and Department Safety Rules.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction and guidance from the Director of Health Services and Dental Coordinator. Policy and procedural manuals and guidelines are also available. Director of Health Services and Dental Coordinator will provide daily assignments, direction and supervision. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Volunteers. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education, experience, and training: Position is for a US citizen or resident aged 18+ who possesses a GED or high school diploma and a strong service ethic. National Sexual Offender Public Registry and Level 2 background screenings required. Florida driver’s license and proof of insurance or reliable means of transportation required. Ability to express oneself effectively with diverse populations in writing and verbally (whether in person or on the phone) and experience in positions with the elderly encouraged. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products is critical. Physical requirements: Ability to move about the campus independently, bend, stoop, lift 20 lbs. and assist potentially frail seniors in wheelchairs or using other assistive devices as they move through the program areas. Prolonged sitting or standing in the conduct of daily activities may be necessary. Pre-selection substance abuse and TB testing is required.
