Local Peace Corps Wants YOU! PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Senior Friendship Centers is looking for AmeriCorps members for service opportunities that begin Aug. 1, 2013 and end Jul. 31, 2014. As an AmeriCorps member, you’ll gain new skills and experiences—and you’ll find the tremendous satisfaction that comes from helping others. If you’re a U.S. citizen or resident aged 18 or older with personal transportation who can commit to serving 36 hours per week for a year, AmeriCorps could be a great opportunity for you! In addition to receiving health insurance and a modest living stipend ($238/week), upon successful completion of the program you’ll receive a $5,500 Education Award to pay for college or repay school loans. (AmeriCorps members aged at least 55 at the time they begin service also have the option of gifting their award to a child or grandchild.) If you are selected and your placement is a good fit, you may apply to extend your service for another year. Applications may be considered for other positions including those in other departments and locations (Sarasota, Arcadia, Venice, Punta Gorda, Ft. Myers, and Naples). Note that this is not employment and comes with no guarantee of employment. If you resign or are released from this national service program, you will not be eligible for unemployment. AmeriCorps Serving Suncoast Seniors Member/ Senior Economic Security Specialist FLSA CLASS: Non-Exempt

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Programs PURPOSE OF POSITION: To design and implement the Senior Economic Security Project to offer financial literacy programming for seniors and those reaching retirement age in order to enhance senior financial stability. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Conduct and coordinate regular programming on senior economic security issues at senior center and congregant dining sites throughout a multicounty area (Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte) 2. Develop creative engagement strategies to destigmatize and communicate the value of public benefits to seniors. 3. Facilitate support groups, teach classes, and offer one-on-one technical assistance to seniors who may be eligible for public benefits. 4. Educate and assist seniors and the public in accessing appropriate SFC services and other community resources. 5. Use tools like the National Council on Aging’s Benefits Check-Up to help seniors get benefits they’re eligible for and increase their income. 6. Pioneer a Senior Economic Stability Speakers’ Bureau and develop and pilot a Senior Financial Literacy Training Program that could be replicated nationally. 7. Identify mutually beneficial partnerships and create strategic linkages between neighborhood groups, non-governmental organizations, faith-based organizations, corporations, financial services institutions, and volunteers to expand programming. 8. Create a peer-to-peer program that pairs trained volunteers with low-income seniors seeking support in preserving and rebuilding financial security.

Cultivate public speaking and community outreach opportunities to promote public awareness of senior financial well-being and volunteerism. 10. Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers, maintaining an accurate log of volunteer hours. 11. Develop metrics (using surveys, follow-up calls, etc.) to track income and other objective, measurable results among participants. 12. Comply with all Senior Friendship Centers Personnel Policies. Protect the safety and health of the staff and others. Observe and follow the provision of Senior Friendship Centers’ accident prevention, safety and reporting of injury, accident and incident policies as prescribed in the Employee Handbook and Department Safety Rules. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction and guidance from the Director of Programs and the CEO. The Director of Programs will provide daily assignments, direction, and supervision. Policy and procedural manuals and guidelines are also available. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Volunteers. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education, experience, and training: Position is for a US citizen or resident aged 18+ who possesses a GED or high school diploma and a strong service ethic. National Sexual Offender Public Registry and Level 2 background screenings required. Florida driver’s license and proof of insurance or reliable means of transportation required. Ability to express oneself effectively with diverse populations in writing a nd verbally (whether in person or on the phone) and experience in positions with the elderly encouraged. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products is critical. Physical requirements: Ability to move about the campus independently, bend, stoop, lift 20 lbs. and assist potentially frail seniors in wheelchairs or using other assistive devices as they move through the program areas. Prolonged sitting or standing in the conduct of daily activities may be necessary. Pre-selection substance abuse and TB testing is required.
