An Invitation to “Unleash the Power of Age”

our health clinic, caregiver resource center, meal programs, and case management.

by Susan Firestone Director of Programs

Exercise for Age Warriors Grounded in Chinese martial arts, Tai Chi emphasizes mind and spirit integrated into movement. Among its many health benefits: relieves physical affects of stress, promotes deep breathing; reduces bone loss in menopausal women; improves lower body and leg strength; helps with arthritis pain; reduces blood pressure; integrates mind and body through mental imagery; helps accumulate energy by releasing endorphins; enhances mental capacity and concentration; improves balance and stability by strengthening ankles and knees; promotes faster recovery from strokes and heart attacks, and improves conditions of Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s. See page 6 for class schedule.

As I was reading my monthly copy of More magazine (for those of you who are not familiar with this publication it celebrates women of style and substance, focused on those mainly over the ripe old age of 40!) one editorial really spoke to me: “How to be an Age Warrior.” The opening sentence; “it takes guts to grow older in America. Not that any of us have a choice.” This is the perfect lead-in to May as Older American’s Month. “Unleash the Power of Age” is this year’s theme, chosen by the Administration on Aging. Both themes are so powerful, they

command respect and promote what many of us already know, that older Americans have a lot to give in so many ways. More active now than ever, they are experiencing second and third careers, and volunteering in record numbers, sharing their talents and wisdom with family, friends, and neighbors. Senior Friendship Centers offer many programs of interest to older adults. They include services for those in need such as

We have the Friendship Centers, where people find many different activities and programs. (See pages 6-7 for a list of classes and programs). We have fitness programs to meet every level of ability, and volunteer opportunities throughout all these programs. We invite you to stop by during the month of May to see what we have to offer to help you live life to the fullest, be an Age Warrior, and Unleash the Power of Age.

Social Security News Mothers Everywhere Appreciate Extra Help Think of all the times and ways that Mom has helped you over the years — when you were a child, and after you became an adult. With Mother’s Day upon us, now is a good time to pay Mom back with a little Extra Help — with her Medicare prescription drug costs. If your mother is covered by Medicare and has limited income and resources, she may be eligible for Extra Help — available through Social Security — to pay part of her monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. The Extra Help is estimated to be worth about $4,000 per year. That means putting $4,000 in Mom’s pocket without having to spend a dime! To figure out whether your mother is eligible, Social Security needs to know her income and the value of her savings, investments and real estate (other than the home she lives in). To qualify for the Extra Help, she must be receiving Medicare and have: •Income limited to $17,235 for an individual or $23,265 for a married couple living together. Even if her annual income is higher, she still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-

payments. Some examples where income may be higher include if she and, if married, her spouse: —Support other family members who live with them; —Have earnings from work; or —Live in Alaska or Hawaii. _ Resources limited to $13,300 for an individual or $26,580 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count her house or car as a resource.
