CITIZENS TO SCIENTISTS

CITIZEN SCIENCE FAIR

THE LARGEST ANNUAL EVENT OF MAKER BAY AT HONG KONG CREATIVE HUB PMQ AT CENTRAL HONG KONG ISLAND I designed and curated the visual identity, story telling and branding for their annual Citizen Science Faire. The idea was to communicate the concept of citizen science as a sea of data.

The idea of sea of data came from a brainstorming workshop with Maker bay’s colleagues. We chose keywords of the mood the event and then different visual elements to represent the mood. -

THOUGHTS TO MESSAGE

In 2015, I have curated the above exhibition in Jockey Club Ti-I College gallery, an exhibition which showcases the design work from the above workshop I led with my partner Heinrik Ng. Through revealing the teaching process of the workshop and showing the workshop outcome, the exhibition aims at spreading design thinking and design process in secondary school art education. The 13 pieces of critical design as the workshop outcomes each tells a story, from revealing the cruelty of met eating to triggering wonder to the universe. In this course I have passed on my passion and dream of creating story-telling objects to my students. Reaching more than these 13 students, I wish to show the public the possibility of design through the exhibition: “Design Says”

SELECTED STUDENT WORKS

STEAK BUTCHER by Jaquelee Chau Inspired by the value of farm animals nowadays, animals are meat and consumers don’t feel sympathy for their lives. This tableware set takes the form of butchering tools to help user to reveal their guilt while realizing the cruetly through the experience of using the design.

THE QUIRKIES By Naomi Chiu A stylish ring combined with a comb for the people who suffers from the quirk of ruffling their hair with fingers. People can use this ring as a comb whenever they want to ruffle their hair, this gives an excuse to them to play with their hair. It can make them to accept and control this quirk in any time, meanwhile bringing fun.

TALK TO SOLUTIONS

BEING A CREATIVE FACILITATOR

During my years in the School of Design of PolyU, I am lucky to have opportunities to host co-design and design thinking workshops for various student groups and real-life NGOs, through which I applied my knowledge in sign thinking and methodologies to act as a creative facilitator.

APPLYING VARIOUS DESIGN TOOLS, FROM BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS TO COVER-STORY FUTURE PROJECTION

The above images are from workshop hosted for School of Everyday Life, an NGO in Hong Kong that works on alternative life educations; Agrifuture at Hong Kong University and for Enactus at Chinese University of Hong Kong.

DESIGN IS A TRANSLATION OF... MESSAGES TO EDIBLE EXPERIENCE

DEEP FOOD INITIATIVE In 2018, I initiated Deep Food with my oprtner Heinrik Ng. Deep Food is determined to explore the narrative side of food that stimulate critical debates.

DEBUT PROJECT DIALOGUE OF 300 YEARS

Deep Food’s debut work to the public is a tea gathering experience that features porcelain work from Dixon Ngai and experimental tea treats from Deep Food. The multiple-course dessert tea gathering with allow the guests to interact with the porcelain dishes through eating.

PROJECT ‘SCHOOL OF BAOS’

Deep Food’s second project is a market booth at the annual market faire of “wellness food” at the School of Everyday Life. This project, the ‘School of Baos” invite participants to make edible essays that conveys their value towards food wellness. Chinese buns in various shapes, colour and flavour are made for participants to compose their edible essays.

PROJECT ORIGIN

This upcoming project is a cross-over between food design team: Deep Food and Cambodian stoneware brand: Unsign. The project aims to trace the atomic origin of food consumed nowadays and to celebrate the long journey that food has taken to exist in its current form.

The project designs cooking tools made of sandstone. As the stones are heated to cook the food inside, the stones create movements that mimic fictional “ancient creatures”. Each stone comes with a narrative story detailing the legacy of these “creatures” spanning over millions of years. These fictional stone creatures act as a metaphor for food substances we consumed nowadays. The design allows its audience to view food as a matter that has taken millions of years to form, as much as the formation of stone. With such metaphor, the design encourages the audience to appreciate and treasure food at a new angle.

NATURAL FACTORY .ORG

I worked as a project researcher as the team for NaturalFactory.org, it is a platform to promote use of natural material by archiving natural materials and engaging and encouraging designers and makers to use these material so that we can have a more circular economy. The engagment is both online and offline.

BOREDOM TO FREEDOM

TOE TALK PROSTHETIC DESIGN Toe Talk is a Prosthetic limb that allow amputees to make artistic statement. The design allow amputee to explore with style and statement with a replaceable printed pattern and alphabet charms. Empowered by 3D scanning and 3D printing, the design can be duplicated and amended to fit the amputees’ bodies.

MODULAR PROSTHETICS

A PROJECT USING THE TECHNOLOGY OF 3D SCANNING AND PRINTING

The design outcome: Toe Talk, is dedicated to active and young amputees who are keen to express their uniqueness. It expands prosthetic design to be expressive and artistic. Working closely with real users and prosthetists, Toe Talk is a playground for amputees to make their own statement and explore styles with mix and match of words and images.

Seeing advancement of 3D printing/Scanning and CAD technology, the project started from two questions: “How might 3d Scanning and printing improvise efficiency of prosthetic making?” and “How might prosthetic design be an amputee’s stage of statement?”

The Slide In structure of Toe Talk allow amputee to Adorn the prosthetic with any printed images. With alphabets charms amputee can make their own statement with words echoing with the printed image. The printed image and words are all pocket-size and clipped tightly onto the limb so users can customize anywhere with no burden.

EARLY RESEARCH STAGES

CONDUCTING RESEARCH FOR AMPUTEES: INTERVIEWS FIELD VISIT DEMONSTRATION BENCHMARKING “It is almost impossible to duplicate a hand-crafted prosthetic: it may be comfortable in one time but not another.” Mr. To, Prosthetist. “I don’t consider myself as disabled, I am just proudly special.” Lucia, amputee, while murmuring that she have no choice but to wear her dull black prosthetic each day. Through the research process we shadowed our target user Luica Lai, an uner-knee amputee and we generated below insight.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

After the research process, the team started the ideation process in which we came up with design principle and critieria and went through a post-it ideation process. The final protype is made from a 3d scan data of our target user’s leg and the socket of the prosthetic is made in meshmixer and Rhinoceros. The final prototype is printed by SLA.

EXISTENCE TO DOUBT PROJECT STAY DOUBTFUL

The project creates a series of everyday objects designed to simulate reflection on existence.

OBJECTS TO TRIGGER DOUBT

Dying or Transforming is part of the series: this pencil sharpener is in shape of a coffin, covered with a notebook. It uses the disappearance of a pencil as a metaphor for our rapidly shortening lives. A pencil transforms its physical existence into ideas as it writes. Similarly human beings produce ideas throughout their lives but are constantly aging.

DYING OR TRANSFORMING (PENCIL SHARPENING KIT SET); BUY ONE GET TWO FREE (FISH TANK); FUNCTIONAL ILLUSION (HALF-CHRISTIAN CROSS)

The coffin which will eventually be filled with pencil sharpenings is a shocking representation of how, eventually our bodies will return to nature and will break down into its constituent parts. However, our legacies (represented by the words in the notebook) are what we create and leave behind. The rest of the series raise more questions on existence by creating thought-provoking scenarios.

DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION

ANICCA BLOSSOM GIFT CARD

The Anicca Blossom are ephemeral flower gift cards to build and destroy, in intimate rituals. An intimate present to celebrate the bittersweetness of love: build, give, watch it self-destroy, and accept the change and loss. The 8 cards each comes with different play-pattern.

BITTER SWEET OF LETTING GO

The cards are kit sets with instruction for the giver to construct the card. To play with the card the receiver at the same time destruct the card. From the process of giving and losing it celebrate the bittersweetness of love. Each of the cars comes with a hint for the card givier to chose the card for an important person. Inside the kit there are instructions to construct the card. Each cards also comes with a poem for the card receiver to destroy and play with the card. E.g. BLAZIA SPARK Delicate petals Come alive in the dark, Burning bright with a dazzling spark. (a card with fireworks on paper)

ANICCA FOR A MOMENT; MEMORY FOR A LIFETIME.

A CHALLENGING CREATIVE PROCESS A PROCESS OF CREATING MORE THAN 60 CONCEPTS

This project is a collaboration with Shana Fankas, a design student from the US. Through the process we worked together on research phase and early ideation. In which we have chosen to focus on destruction as a topic to explore, since we found that ususally toy design values construction more than destruction but we think destruction also has its play and educational value.

During the process ideas are communicated by concept sheets and on note cards.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

As the concept are finalized, Shana and I decided to work individually on different project outcome. I focused on creating a series of gift card that engage the user to destruct a gift, while the gift giver can learn to let go of their own creation. During the concept development I created mock ups and proof-of principles prototypes to test various features of the play pattern.
