A Body in Motion There are no boundaries in modern dance, nothing is off limits. The intricate and complex movements found in this art form can make a statement about the overall human condition, or they can attempt to portray the relationship between a man and his John Deere tractor. This month, BodyVox-2 (the apprenticeship dance program for the world-renowned Portland-based troupe) will dazzle Westside audiences with feats of physicality, moments of tenderness, and extreme beauty - all through the medium of dance. BodyVox-2 will perform two shows at the Walters Cultural Arts Center this month. The first show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on February 15. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. BodyVox-2 will also perform a family-friendly matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday February 16. Tickets for the matinee are $12 in advance and $17 the day of the show for adults. HATS When a woman wears a hat, she gets noticed. Whether a bell-shaped cloche, wide brimmed gaucho, or leopard-skin pill box hat, a woman in a hat exudes confidence and commands attention. Local hat maker Diana Unterspan - who has lived in New York, the Deep South, and now the West - has observed this first hand. “She gets a better table in a restaurant,” Unterspan explains of women who wear statement hats. “Waiters will wait on her more quickly.” Unterspan has dabbled in different art forms ranging from encaustics to fiber and is a former psychotherapist. In the last two years, she has developed a method for taking local wool and transforming it into unique, fashionable hats. It’s a multi-step and multi-season process, as the raw wool has to be cleaned and
dyed, turned into fine felt, and then shaped. In addition to fine felt hats, Unterspan also makes hats from seagrass and straw. This month, Unterspan’s hats will be featured at Art on Broadway gallery in Downtown Beaverton. The show - titled Feminine Finery - is just in time for Valentine’s Day. At the show, the handcrafted jewelry of Roberta Cohen will also be featured. Join Unterspan and Cohen at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday February 9 at the gallery on Broadway Street in Beaverton. Also this month, Unterspan will give a free demonstration at the gallery starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday February 17. The Magic of Peter Yarrow The legendary folk musician, social activist, and humanitarian plays a show at Pacific University this month.
Peter Yarrow still carries a little bit of Puff ’s magic with him. The 75-year-old musician who rose to fame as a member of the popular folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary, says he has never lost his sense of hope and wonder. Throughout his career, which has straddled a line between musical performance and social activism, Yarrow has seen the human spirit elevated - when marching with Martin Luther King Jr. - and he’s seen it broken by Superstorm Sandy. In the realm of grace and in the face of adversity, Yarrow’s mission has always been the same: spread a message of tolerance and love, elevate the collective condition. In February, the revered songwriter and performer will bring his guitar, songs, and stories to Pacific University. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on February 23 at the Taylor Meade Performing Arts Center on the Pacific University campus in Forest Grove. Tickets are $22. When Yarrow performs, he plays favorite Peter, Paul, and Mary hits like Blowin’ in the Wind, If I had a Hammer, Leaving on a Jet Plane, and Puff the Magic Dragon. His repertoire also includes tunes from the classic folk songbook, and original songs written for “Don’t Laugh at Me,” Yarrow’s international anti-bullying campaign. Though Peter, Paul, and Mary will never again play as a trio - Mary Travers died in 2009 - the message will live on through him and forever. “There is a legacy of Peter, Paul and Mary,” he said. “It is not just the legacy of the three voices and the way they sound together and their physical, corporal presence, but a particular spirit of the music, and a particular thrust and meaning. And that is my legacy. That’s what I am proud of.” Most of Yarrow’s audiences know the words to his songs and he encourages them to sing along at his shows. But while some people may know the lyrics, there has been some speculation about what one of his most famous songs actually means. Yarrow acknowledges the rumors that exist about drug references in Puff the Magic Dragon, but he said those rumors are unfounded. The song, he explains, is about the innocence of childhood lost, not marijuana. “There was no grass. There was no marijuana,” Yarrow said of his senior year at Cornell in 1963 when he co-wrote the famous song with Leonard Lipton. For that reason, he explains, he couldn’t possibly have written a song about a substance he had never tried. Since his career began, a lot has changed. Social and political movements have come and gone, people have risen to power and fallen. After all these years, Yarrow and his message stay relevant because he has always seen the big picture. “The perspective of being a part of something larger than oneself is a great gift, because the universe is not defined by the beginning and end of one’s life,” Yarrow said.

Pioneering History The Alvin T. Smith House south of present-day Forest Grove is a testament to the pioneer days in Oregon Country and Washington County.
The Friends of Historic Forest Grove continues its work to turn a 1854 farm home into a museum and heritage farm on the West Tualatin Plains It’s all there in the diaries, the story of early pioneer life on the Tualatin Plains. Missionary Alvin Thompson Smith and his wife Abigail crossed the Oregon Trail in 1840 with a small wagon party, and the couple settled in what would become Western Washington County and present day Forest Grove. Smith kept a meticulous diary of day-to-day life, detailing names, dates, and local destinations from the time. It was Oregon Country in the raw, and Smith played a pivotal role in shaping the Tualatin Valley, the Metro region, and the state. The house Smith built in 1854 still stands in its original place, on the remnants of an old territorial road off Elm Street south of Highway 47. Instead of seeing the house and testament to the pioneer past torn

down or moved, a local non-profit is working to restore the property, turning it into a museum, heritage farm, and destination for historical tourists. The Friends of Historic Forest Grove - a organization more than two decades old with approximately 100 members - purchased the house and about two acres of the original Smith land for $75,000 in 2005. The mortgage was paid off in full by 2010 through grants, donations, and fundraising. Last year, the friends were given the opportunity to purchase another 3.2 acres adjacent to the house for $200,000. This additional land - in what is now an industrial zone - would allow for direct access to the house from Elm Street. FHFG found financing for the project, and now the group is on another large fundraising mission.
In addition to paying off the debt on the recently acquired land, the group conservatively estimates it could take another $700,000 to completely stabilize and update the old farmhouse and property. The Friends have been successful in fundraising for the project to date, securing close to $250,000 through grants and donations since 2003, most of which went to pay off the first mortgage and work to stabilize the foundation of the house. In its first fundraiser of 2013, FHFG is raffling off tickets to win a hand-crafted birdhouse and replica of the A.T. Smith House. Trask River Redemption It’s Oregon Coast Range Americana at its most authentic. Four local boys who grew up hunting and fishing in the Tillamook State Forest now capture the essence of those woods in a dank four-piece band Trask River Redemption. The group, which grew out of the local music scene about six months ago, entangles the songwriting and rhythm of Gaston’s Josh Smith, the technical skill of Matt Stark and Syd LeVeque (from band Power of County) on lead guitar and bass, and Forest Grove’s Tim Holycross on box drum.
It’s a mix of hillbilly and hardcore with mutton chops, top hats, cowboy boots, tattoo sleeves, tall boys of Hamms, and jugs of homebrew. Trask River Redemption is a jam band that can have you swaying to the melody, but can also shred in the solos. jugs of homebrew. The guys played their first show as Trask River Redemption in January at Ballad Town Billiards, and have another planned for March 2 at Slim’s in St. Johns. More locations and dates are sure to follow. The band has about a dozen or so original songs and they are working on more. They are also in the process of recording tracks and putting out an album which is tentatively called The Wheelhouse. Taking Little Steps Aimee Fessler is the kind of person you would trust with your kids. A mother of two and former nanny who worked as a special education assistant in Portland Public Schools, Fessler has more than 20 years in childcare experience, and can’t see herself doing anything else besides working with kids. “I just always loved working with kids,” Fessler said. “It’s my thing.” Fessler moved to Washington County as a teen and now lives in Gales Creek with Peter Fessler, her husband of 15 years. In January, she opened Little Steps, her own independent day care facility in North Plains. Little Steps, located on Glencoe Road just north of Highway 26, is the perfect site
