OLD GRUMPY’S GALLERY…... Welcome to Old Grumpy’s Gallery, where Bob and Verena take this opportunity to wish all our customers and readers of CC’s Newsletter a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year For us this is a Birthday of sorts. It being one year since we relocated to our present emporium alongside Barry Muir’s Furniture Gallery. And what a year is has been getting a new business established is a challenge to anyone in our case we had to almost start all over again having moved over to the sunny side of the street… It is so nice to be recognised and referred to as a landmark in The Mount; we seem to feature in directions given to visitors to The Mount... “Just past Old Grumpy’s” or “Just down from Old Grumpy’s” From Books, Books and More Books… Wow.!!! Over the last Bob and Verena year more than 40,000 Pre loved, clean and odour free books have been purchased from us… We are delighted to have been able to please so many readers. And thank all of you for your support. The annual book fares are popular but at Old Grumpy’s Gallery we have a book fare every day.. Vinyl Records continue to grow in popularity, as with our pre loved books we are continuously sourcing new stock on an almost daily basis. Our LP’s are carefully selected and quality checked before going onto the shelves. Each record is washed and vacuumed. (No harsh wiping). Each cover is restored where required and new inner and outer sleeves are installed. Our range is vast including Rock ‘N Roll, Jazz, Pop, Blues, Classical, Folk, 60’s, Soul etc... And if we don’t have what you are looking for we will get it for you. New in store is a huge selection of postcards featuring images taken by Bob.. These are great value at only 50C each. Thinking of Christmas gifts why not consider one of Bob’s local landscape photographs, either as a print, framed or on canvas. New camera for Christmas ? Enquire about photography lessons. Looking forward to greeting you at Old Grumpy’s Gallery Soon 276 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui, 3116 Phone: 07 281 1256 Email: bob@oldgrumpys.co.nz Website www.oldgrumpys.co.nz

Holiday Cooking

PARTY SAFE Hey it’s party season that

Artificial trees should be labeled, certified, and identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant. Make sure your tree is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit in case of an emergency. Some lights are either for indoor or outdoor use, usually not both. Worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections are not safe. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before you use or connect lights and decorations. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. Make sure your decorations are not broken/ sharp as children may hurt themselves. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger. Don’t dump in or around the house or garage dispose of it correctly Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards.

Food plays a major part in holiday celebrations, please remember unattended cooking is very dangerous. Stay in the kitchen while you're frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove and move any oil or fat pans off the stove. Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, towels, etc.) away from your stovetop, including your apron or any long-sleeved shirt. Protect little ones from burns, keep them out of the kitchen while you're cooking. Have you checked your smoke detectors???? Do it now … they just might save a life in the case of an emergency. Don’t risk your home and most important your family and friends. See you have alarms on every level of your home especially near sleeping areas.

means fun times with friends. It’s great to be out having fun BUT party safe!!! Don’t think it can’t happen to you. People do spike drinks … Never leave your drink unattended. Unless you know who is buying your drink get it yourself.

(Don’t think it can’t happen to you)

BBQ’s Barbeques are always a great way of people getting together. Gas bottles should always be checked to see that they are not leaking gas. See that the BBQ is placed away from the foot traffic. Always have a bucket of water or a hose handy. Alcohol and BBQs are not a good combination. People who are drinking should not be in charge of the BBQ. Keep children away from the cooking area. Common sense is required which will prevent accidents happening.

Contacts: Always have emergency numbers with you. Parents, Friends, Emergency no: 111, Taxi numbers. Always let family know where you are and who you are with. Drink: Don’t drink and drive… make sure you have a sober driver or order a taxi. Don’t get in a car with someone that has been drinking. Make sure you have money in case you need a taxi. ID: Always carry your ID so in an emergency you can be identified and family contacted if needed. Keep your ID safe. Mobile Phone: Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged … put your ID detail on your phone, Keep your mobile on you at all times in case you need it. Drink: Monitor your drink intake. Intoxication puts you in a vulnerable place for danger (disputes, rape, Alcatraz lockup) Don’t make an idiot of yourself that you can’t remember and regret. Carry some morals with you while out having fun. don't scull or mix your drinks. Groups: You are far more safe by staying in groups or with a friend. Take extra care if out on your own. Spiking Drinks: Buy your own drink. Don’t leave your drink un-attended!!! Keep your drink in sight at all. times and know who is around you. Don’t share drinks this can be a danger. It could be spiked

DRINK DRIVING

NEW YEARS EVE

We have all been warned about drink driving. We all know we are not to drink & drive …!!! As the ads on the TV say …. DON’T BE A BLOODY IDIOT! Have your partys enjoy your friends and celebrate Christmas but use your brains and organise your travel home or stay at your friends place. Taxis are available and in the end are cheaper than a drink driving ticket, loss of licence or living with the fact you have injured or killed another person. Remember if you kill another person or yourself you HURT & WRECK so many people’s life's.

As any other New Years Eve celebration most will end up on Marine Parade Celebrating the beginning of another year. Remember the liquor bans are in place so leave your alcohol at home. Don’t get yourself intoxicated/plastered and end up in Alcatraz for the night. Why so many have to make idiots of themselves baffles me. Watching the young teens last year disgrace themselves with girls wearing the next to nothing yelling and screaming and squatting to pee in the streets, guys pants hanging off them peeing everywhere drunk as skunks and people have the nerve to talk about animals! There is no shame when teens get liquor under their belt. The streets of Singapore would not tolerate this why do we accept this disgusting behaviour? We need to toughen up on idiot childish behaviour. Humans can be disgraceful creatures. Happy New Year.

During December you’ll find the remembrance trees at Papamoa Pak’n Save, Bayfair, Brookfield New World or Farmers Tauranga. For a dona on you can write a personal message for those you love and place it on the tree. These messages are blessed as part of our remembrance service in the New Year and buried in a specially made kete under the remembrance tree in the hospice grounds. We have enjoyed tremendous support from our community throughout this year. CC’s Bay Of Plenty Community News Letter, Phone: 07 5755 181 ... Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 7) Buying a Laptop It’s the season of giving and receiving gifts. And sometimes, we get to buy gifts for ourselves as a special treat. So, on that note, I’d like to briefly cover how to buy a laptop. The first, and most critical task is to create a list of what need to be able to do regularly on the laptop, what you might do sometimes, and what might be nice capabilities if it fits the budget. This leads to the next step. How much are you prepared to spend? As a guide, laptops start at about $300 and go up to about $3,500. That’s a large range of prices so you want to be careful about buying the right one. If you mainly read email, use social media (such as Facebook) or watch YouTube videos, then a lower end laptop around $500 would be for you. If you are a serious gamer then you’ll be looking for dedicated/ discreet graphics, a fast processor, lots of memory and lots of hard disk. The price for such a laptop would most likely start at $1,500. Ignoring the formal specifications, you’ll need to visit a store and try out some laptops to see which keyboard, trackpad, screen layout suits you. Things like a glossy screen versus a matte screen, the various sizes of keyboard or size of the individual keys, how the trackpad feels, etc, etc, etc. That is, the subjective stuff that everyone has a different opinion on. Finally, talk to the sales people. Tell them about what you need the laptop for using the list you created. Think about their suggestions. Visit other stores if you’re not 100% sure on what to get. Remember, you are the buyer and you are in control. The advice above is what I give to all who ask. But if you have any more questions, give me a call (see my ad for contact details). -David (Kings Computers)

Are You Going On Holiday? Is Your Home Safe & Secure? Here are just a few reminders of keeping your home safe while you are away. Many home are broken into so it is important to take steps to secure your home. Have you thought about having someone you can trust to live in your home while you are away. Don’t advertise to everyone that you are going away… don’t share your holiday before you go on facebook. Have a security system put into your home and/or display a sign on your windows so it can be seen See that your window and door locks are all working … locking your home properly can help to deter burglars Make sure you know who has keys and access to your home. Get your neighbour or a friend to keep your mail box empty and open and shut your gate for you. Disconnect power to your appliances for example TV, Dryers Washing machines, Radios, Computers and so on.

Trespassing an unwanted person. If a person is not welcome, the most common trespass is where you give the person a written notice stating they are trespassed from the property or premises. It is dated, name of the person trespassed, the place of trespass is noted and a reason signed by the person trespassing the offender. You then send a copy of the trespass to the police where it is lodged. If that person comes back to the property or premises you then ring and report it to the police, they then deal with the offending person. A verbal trespass is where you verbally trespass a person from the property or premises. You forward the details to the police to lodge and if the offender returns you ring the police to deal with the situation. Anybody can trespass a person from their property or premises.

Giving and receiving love is the only guarantee of having a truly Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Wishing you and your family all the best.

Graffiti or Noise People are entitled to make a reasonable level of noise, but everyone also has the right to have excessive noise stopped or reduced, provided the noise is under human control. Graffiti vandalism (tagging) is a crime that affects the whole community. It can lower property values and encourage more vandalism and other types of crime. It also costs a lot of money to clean up – money that could be better spent on other things for Tauranga City. If you have an issue with noise, you can call the Council on 07 577 7000 at any time of the day or night to report it. If you see someone tagging phone 111 immediately. The Police have a better chance of taking legal action if they can catch an offender in the act. For general graffiti reporting please call the Council 07 577 7000.

Most earthquakes occur at faults, which are breaks extending deep within the earth, caused by movements of these plates. There are thousands of earthquakes each year in New Zealand, but most of them are too small to bother us. The large, damaging earthquakes can occur at any time so it is best to be prepared.

Before the earthquake Make a Household Emergency Plan (including an Emergency Grab Bag) Assemble enough food and water to last 3 days if you were stuck at home Prac ce Drop, Cover and Hold Iden fy safe places in your home During the earthquake Drop, Cover and Hold Stay indoors till the shaking stops If you are driving , pull over to a clear spot and stay with your seatbelt fastened. Make sure it is safe before you exit anywhere

Poem of the year The computer swallowed Grandma, yes, honestly it’s true! She pressed 'control and 'enter' and disappeared from view. It devoured her completely, the thought just makes me squirm. She must have caught a virus or been eaten by a worm. I've searched through the recycle bin and files of every kind; I've even used the Internet, but nothing did I find. In desperation, I asked Mr. Google my searches to refine. The reply from him was negative, not a thing was found 'online.' So, if inside your 'Inbox,' my Grandma you should see, Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' her, and send her back to me.. This is a tribute to all the Grandmas & Grandpas, Nannas & Pops, Grans & Pa's, who have been fearless and learned to use the Computer.....They are the greatest!!! We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing...

Babysitters If you are going out and getting babysitters make sure you know who you are leaving with your children. It is better if the children know the babysitter so they feel secure and safe. See they have your contact numbers in case there is a problem. Make sure they have the house locked for safety .

The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started..... I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the rump steak, rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." And that's when the fight started..... My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started... My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 165 in about 2 seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started...... When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp. .

Family Works Northern’s WAVE (Women against Violence Education) programme helps women become aware of the dynamics of domestic violence and builds their strength to make positive decisions for themselves and their families. Often the women who attend the first few sessions are apprehensive, simply because of the fear of the unknown. When working alongside women who have experienced domestic violence, it’s important to have true empathy and a non-judgmental approach -a “heart for the people”. It is a privilege, as a facilitator of the programme, to witness the growing self-esteem and confidence of each courageous woman who attends. WAVE runs for two hours once a week for 14 weeks. Reporting child abuse

NEW Alcohol Laws:

Anyone can report suspected child abuse in this country and people who call Child, Youth and Family can ask to remain anonymous. Even if an investigation results in no abuse being found the law will protect you if you disclosed or supplied information in good faith. Fear of being wrong is the single most common reason people might decide not to act. People feel this way because they might be afraid of: Repercussions - being thought insensitive - breaking a confidence - being disloyal. One of the best ways to overcome this fear is to equip ourselves with good knowledge and to discuss concerns early with an appropriate person. You can use the Child, Youth and Family freephone – 0508 326 459 – to sound out your concerns. If you are concerned that a child or young person is being abused, remember that their safety and wellbeing comes first. When you are reporting a concern, Child, Youth and Family will need to know as much as possible about the situation. Useful details include the name, age and ethnicity of the child or young person, the address where the child or young person can be found, and as much about the abuse or your concerns as possible.

18 December 2013, new laws for supplying alcohol to under-18s. It will be illegal to supply alcohol to someone under the age of 18 years unless: the person supplying the alcohol is the parent or legal guardian and the alcohol is supplied in a responsible manner, or the person supplying alcohol has the express consent of the young person’s parent or legal guardian and the alcohol is supplied in a responsible manner. You could be fined up to $2,000 if you don't follow the law. …

We are now heading into our busiest time of the year - ki en season; when a dedicated group of people dust off their cages, wash bedding, bowls and li er trays, then take a deep breath in preparation for the incoming deluge of unwanted and generally dumped pregnant cats, mother cats and ki ens or li ers of young ki ens. These people are the Tauranga SPCA foster families who care for these ki ens until they are old enough to be adopted – usually about 8 weeks old. These kind people willingly and lovingly give up hours of each day for weeks, and in a number of cases, months, to look after the dozens of unwanted animals. All animals are fed, toileted, groomed given lots of play and love before being se led down in a comfy bed for a snooze until the whole cycle starts again – too often our precious resources are used up caring for these poor unfortunate cast-offs, giving them a second chance at life, and a new forever home. Most of these animals are friendly – obviously once treasured pets. A number of the mother cats are young probably their first li er. Many animals are scared, starving, confused and some have almost given up on life – wouldn’t you if you were suddenly cast out of your warm comfortable home, into the gu er, pregnant, or with youngsters depending on you for survival. We couldn’t get through the summer ki en season if it wasn’t’ for our foster families, last year we had hundreds of ki ens in foster which would be impossible for us to house at the shelter so you can imagine how important our fosters are and why we always need more. If you think this is something you could do please give us a call Ph. 578 0245 for more information, we will provide you with all the necessities required to ensure the ki ens get the best of care. Also with our busy ki en season ki y li er and ki en food especially the pouches are always in high demand and we run out very quickly so any donations of these would be greatly appreciated. CC’s Bay Of Plenty Community News Letter, Phone: 021 501 200 ... Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 12) Some of the readers might be aware that I have had a major career direction this year and while I don’t want to dwell on that I do want to pass some comments about social service agencies and how you may interact with them. There seems to be much resistance from many people who phone in or ask for help for an agency to ‘just work one on one’ they often don’t want to, or won’t join into a group work process, and while some agencies can manage this, some need to charge for that service or twist their contract brief to get the client number. Often the answer is based on who funds an agency. Let me expand on that further. Many family agencies are funded in part by MSD, Ministry of Social Development which operates as WINZ and CYF’s. This can cause alarm from some parents who then jump in and think that the agency is just a front for CYF’s who are just going to come and take their kids. This is nothing but utter rubbish. CYF’s have many sections and the funding team do not talk to the front line social workers, and never about client work. How do I know? I’ve spent time in their office as a student, yes an older student. The MSD funded agency does have a set of rules and policies to guide their work, and these need to be approved by yet another CYF section and are regularly audited by that audit section. All agencies work under the paramountcy principal, that is they need to have the best interests of the child as first priority, just the same as any professional who interacts with your child does. For agencies that are not contracted by a government agency their road is much harder, they are at the mercy of community funders who can and do change their focus every few years to share their money around. These funders are much less likely to fund ‘individual services’ as they see it as getting less bang for their buck! Throughout the course of a working day in my former agency I would often hear myself say the same thing to 10 different people at different times who all want ‘one on one’ services. Getting them all together in a group and saying it once is a much cheaper option. Of course working together as a group means that everyone has to keep the secret, the secret that Mrs Jones for Number 29 was at the meeting last night! However how did THEY know? Sometimes fear and embarrassment stops people from attending group meeting, public presentations ( I’ve done a few and had everyone suddenly become busy) or parenting talks by an expert (unless it’s a charity fundraiser!). For parents who demand to work individually maybe they can reach into their own pocket and fund the hour they spend with a professional, if they are paying for it I’m sure it will only be an hour! December Newsletter As we draw towards the end of 2014 I am looking forward to the Christmas break, catching up with family and friends, relaxing and just enjoying living life in the Bay! People are finding out just how fantas c it is living on the coastal strip and we are no cing increasing numbers of buyers from other regions reloca ng to the area. Many sellers are wary of the auc on process but if you are thinking of selling make sure you talk to an agent who can fully explain the process, par cularly if your property is in a higher demand price range. Some of the results we have seen in the last few weeks have driven home the benefit of the auc on process. In Papamoa the $400,000-$500,000 range is currently the highest selling range. If you don’t get good advice you could end up underselling your property. Call in and see me at Eves Papamoa Plaza for a chat if you would like more informa on regarding auc ons. Enjoy the fes ve season and all the best for 2015! October Sales figures: There were a total of 79 recorded sales on the coastal strip in October. 56A Topaz Drive $395,000

Stranger Danger Tips Always try to stay in sight of other people, don't go down back streets or road If you can remember the car number plate or the colour or make of car. If a stranger approaches either on foot or in a vehicle, move back from them. Don’t take any lollies or food from them If they attempt to talk to you or ask for help for any reason, don't go to them stay back. Run away as fast as you can, if you are feeling scared Try and remember what the person looks like and what they are wearing. Yell for help as you run and try to stay in sight of other people Tell someone (a teacher, a parent or police officer or any other trusted adult) about what happened immediately. Always stay alert to who's around if you are out alone or with friends, Always stay in groups If possible. It’s much safer to be in groups. Always look after each other when you are out.
