CHILDREN BACK ROUND ROADS SCHOOLS BACK

Time for another reminder that children are back out round the roads again walking, biking and skateboarding to school. Speed limits ar e set by schools for r easons, see you stick to the speed limit. Young children are not able to gage distance with cars and run across roads not thinking. Be alert when driving round school areas. Never think it cant or won’t happen to you … accidents happen so fast and when least expected. It is also up to parent's to see that you teach your children road safety. A child knowing road safety rules has more chance of making it home safe. Make them realise that they to have a responsibility to take care when out round traffic, and crossing roads … Take Care … Think Children … Think Life

The roads in town are for everyone. We should expect pedestrians and cyclists. About one third of crashes are caused by SPEEDING If a child steps out 45 metres away and the vehicle is travelling at 60km/h by the time the alert driver reacts and brakes, the car will still be travelling at 44km/h when the child is hit.

There is a one in three chance that the child will die. ► ► ►

If a vehicle hits a person at 50km/h, the risk of death is 40% If a vehicle hits a person at 60km/h, the risk of death is 70% If a vehicle hits a person at 70km/h, the risk of death is 96%

Kill your speed, not a child SLOW DOWN

Matamata

The 1st January was a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set where the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were filmed… if you haven't been there find some time to walk round the grounds and view the beautiful Hobbiton houses. The scenery is great with plenty to look at. Make sure you take sun screen as it gets very hot walking round. Certainly the ice cold Hobbiton beer is a treat at the end of the tour. So much work has gone into setting up the scenes for the movie and all look so natural it felt peaceful. I found my wee hide-away home in the hill it was so cute with the flowers and fences … I'm sure there would be enough room in there for me and my five furry mates … would be like living in a dog kennel Lol.

OLD GRUMPY’S GALLERY…… Happy February….. And welcome to Old Grumpy’s Gallery Wow... Where did January go? They say time fly’s when you’re having fun. We certainly have fun at Old Grumpy’s Gallery thanks largely to our wonderful customers and friends who continue to patronise our unique emporium… Portraying oneself as “Old Grumpy” certainly raises eyebrows from those not so sure whether or not. ”Is he” or “isn’t he Old Grumpy “? Invariably these quizzical thoughts result in laughter and smiles. Not surprisingly though is that many ladies we speak to seem to have an association with an Old Grumpy of their own…! The fantastic sunny weather we have enjoyed in January has enabled Bob to spend a lot of time having fun on the footpath outside of Old Grumpy’s Starting the day setting up the book display each morning is a real joy especially when we meet and greet people on their way to work with nice smiles and cheerful “good morning” exchanges. Patrons and visitors to our store can always expect to browse our extensive selection of Pre-Loved Books, DVD’s, Vinyl and Collectables. And of course an ever Pat Caphill with her Oamaru Stone changing selection of Bob’s photography work, featuring Work Outside Old Grumpy’s stunning images of local scenery. But there is more! It is always nice to showcase interesting goods and products. There is a tendency for retailers to promote artistic products that are imported into New Zealand from far-away places like China. At Old Grumpy’s Gallery we enjoy promoting local artists work. Although we do not have huge business premises we do our best to accommodate displaying and selling creations on behalf of selected artists including sculptors, artists, carvers and photographers. It is always nice to be able to put a face to an artist who has created a certain piece of work that one is considering purchasing.

Paul Regan Talented local artist

A popular feature with us is the regular appearance at our store of sculptor Pat Caphill. Pat sets up a work station near to the entrance of Old Grumpy’s Gallery and actually works on her magnificent creations while visitors to the mount can witness the birth of Pat’s unique Oamaru Stone Kiwi themed sculptures. Pat is always happy to engage in conversation with customers, visitors and passers-by who are interested in the origin of the Oamaru Stone. Pat is truly a great ambassador for New Zealand. Since our association with Pat began in 2013 we are delighted to have assisted in selling her work to customers all over the world…Pat’s Oamaru Stone sculptures are available directly from Pat and exclusively at Old Grumpy’s Gallery all year round. For more information of Oamaru Stone please visit us to receive a free descriptive bulletin.

3 year old Kieran Groves winner of Paddy’s Market Fancy Dress Parade receiving his $100.00 cash Another local artist’s work on show and for sale at Old Grumpy’s gallery is the unique Pop Art and Techno Art images painstakingly prize from Bob and Barry

produced by Paul Regan. Paul is a hugely talented artist who incorporates old and new imagery into stunning creations.. He excels in being given a request to interpret and produce an image from customers own visions of a topic they would like to see in art form. Wow... We almost forgot at Old Grumpy’s Gallery we have delicious fresh coffee, tea and cold drinks available to be accompanied with the choice of delectable slices…

Old Grumpy “serving

Many thanks to all of you who participated in Paddy’s Market children’s fancy dress parade coffee tea and slice” Congratulations to our $100 winner Kieran Groves. Kieran won over the judges with his film star smiles and his mmmmmm Delicious striking Jockey’s outfit. Well done Kieran. Paddy’s Market is a monthly event that we present in association with Barry Muir’s Furniture Gallery. We look forward to seeing many of you during February and making you welcome at Old Grumpy’s Gallery.

Many people believe that Domestic violence is only physical abuse. However, Domestic violence takes many different forms. It may also be psychological, sexual, financial or spiritual violence. Physical Violence includes hitting, pinching, spitting, slapping, pushing, punching, kicking, burning, stabbing, strangulation, suffocating & shooting. It may also include threats to cause harm Psychological Violence (sometimes referred to as emotional or verbal abuse) includes put-downs, name calling, jealousy, harassing, screaming, using degrading language, insults, criticism, harming pets or animals, isolation from family and friends, and threats to leave the relationship or to commit suicide if the victim does not co-operate Sexual Violence includes unwanted touching or sexual activity, raping and forcing victim into unwanted sexual practices. It may include control over birth control, forced pregnancies or abortions and transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Financial Violence occurs when an individual uses finances to control another individual. This could include forcing a person to hand over all or part of their salary or by denying someone access to their own finances, making victim ask or beg for money, forceful removal of money from victim Spiritual Violence occurs when an individual uses religious or spiritual matters to control another, such as forcing another to follow a particular faith or give up their religion or justifying their violence as religiously and spiritually acceptable

Family Works Northern’s WAVE (Women against Violence Education) programme helps women become aware of the dynamics of domestic violence and builds their strength to make positive decisions for themselves and their families. Often the women who attend the first few sessions are apprehensive, simply because of the fear of the unknown. When working alongside women who have experienced domestic violence, it’s important to have true empathy and a non-judgmental approach -a “heart for the people”. It is a privilege, as a facilitator of the programme, to witness the growing self-esteem and confidence of each courageous woman who attends. WAVE runs for two hours once a week for 14 weeks. Reporting child abuse

NEW Alcohol Laws:

Anyone can report suspected child abuse in this country and people who call Child, Youth and Family can ask to remain anonymous. Even if an investigation results in no abuse being found the law will protect you if you disclosed or supplied information in good faith. Fear of being wrong is the single most common reason people might decide not to act. People feel this way because they might be afraid of: Repercussions - being thought insensitive - breaking a confidence - being disloyal. One of the best ways to overcome this fear is to equip ourselves with good knowledge and to discuss concerns early with an appropriate person. You can use the Child, Youth and Family freephone – 0508 326 459 – to sound out your concerns. If you are concerned that a child or young person is being abused, remember that their safety and wellbeing comes first. When you are reporting a concern, Child, Youth and Family will need to know as much as possible about the situation. Useful details include the name, age and ethnicity of the child or young person, the address where the child or young person can be found, and as much about the abuse or your concerns as possible.

18 December 2013, new laws for supplying alcohol to under-18s. It will be illegal to supply alcohol to someone under the age of 18 years unless: the person supplying the alcohol is the parent or legal guardian and the alcohol is supplied in a responsible manner, or the person supplying alcohol has the express consent of the young person’s parent or legal guardian and the alcohol is supplied in a responsible manner. You could be fined up to $2,000 if you don't follow the law. …

Look up the new laws regarding alcohol you need to know them.

What to do in an earthquake New Zealand lies on the boundary of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates. Most earthquakes occur at faults, which are breaks extending deep within the earth, caused by movements of these plates. There are thousands of earthquakes each year in New Zealand, but most of them are too small to bother us. The large, damaging earthquakes can occur at any time so it is best to be prepared Before the earthquake Make a Household Emergency Plan (including an Emergency Grab Bag) Assemble enough food and water to last 3 days if you were stuck at home Practice Drop, Cover and Hold Identify safe places in your home During the earthquake Drop, Cover and Hold Stay indoors till the shaking stops If you are driving , pull over to a clear spot and stay with your seatbelt fastened. Make sure it is safe before you exit anywhere After the earthquake Listen to your local radio station for emergency broadcasts. Expect to feel aftershocks Check yourself and get first aid if needed Help others if you can Keep your animals and pets controlled and safe

It's grass seed season again and unfortunately these little terrors can cause your pet serious problems. There are some types of grass seeds that are shaped like a pointy needle and once caught in your pet’s fur they can start to burrow aggressively into their skin. If the seed does not exit, a painful abscess can develop. This invariably leads to the need for surgery to remove the seed or its remnants. What to look out for: excessive licking - often one of the first signs a swelling or lump - especially between toes, under armpits pus and bloody discharge from a burst abscess Occasionally a grass seed will end up in your dog’s ear canal causing major irritation - your pet may shake his head violently or turn his head to the side. Ear infections present in a similar manner so a check up with us is always essential. Top tips: Keep your pet out of long grass and keep their fur clipped short - especially around the feet. Check your pet's coat for grass seeds daily and after every walk - concentrate under the paws, between the toes, around the ears and in the armpit region. You'll be amazed how many seeds can become hidden in your pet's coat - and they are just waiting to cause trouble! BETHLEHEM: 07 576 9555 CHERRYWOOD: 07 576 9807

Tips to help you avoid driver fatigue Get a good night's sleep before driving, preferably eight hours. Avoid driving during the hours when you are normally sleeping. For most people, this will be between 10pm and 6am. If you normally have a mid-afternoon nap, then you should avoid driving at that time. Make sure that following a period of sleep you are fully awake before driving. Don't drink even small amounts of alcohol. It will make the effects of fatigue much worse. When taking long trips, plan your journey to include rest breaks. Share the driving if possible. Snack on light, fresh foods. Avoid consuming fatty, sugary or carbohydrate-filled foods, which can make you tired. Recognise the warning signs

Some warning signs are: having trouble focusing, keeping your eyes open or holding your head up daydreaming, wandering or disconnected thoughts, loss of memory yawning or rubbing your eyes repeatedly drifting from your lane, tailgating and missing signs or exits feeling restless and irritable. Stop to revive, then drive During long trips, take rest breaks about every two hours or every 100 kilometres.

If you start feeling sleepy: don't keep driving – pull over immediately in a safe place (as far off the road as possible) move to the passenger seat and take a 15–20 minute power nap. A short sleep is very refreshing – try not to nap for a period longer than 40 minutes otherwise you may feel groggy and disoriented when you wake up and for quite some time afterwards (this is called sleep inertia) wait at least 10 minutes to make sure that you are completely awake before you start driving again. If you still feel sleepy don't drive, find a place to sleep for an extended period or for the night. This is a great sight to go an get the answers to questions about safety and driving, Drink/Drug driving

Alcohol and drugs limits Alcohol and drugs, including some drugs given to you by a doctor, can seriously affect your driving. They can slow your reaction times and affect your senses. You risk causing death and serious injury to yourself and other people if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Legal alcohol limits for driving The law says you must not drive if the amount of alcohol in your blood or breath exceeds certain age-related limits.

Under twenty There is a zero alcohol limit if you are under 20. That means if you drive after consuming even one drink you can be charged with drink driving. If you have an alcohol level of less than 150 micrograms per litre of breath and less than 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood you could be fined and given 50 demerit points. If your alcohol limit is higher, you could be disqualified from driving, given 50 demerit points and either fined or imprisoned.

Twenty or over You must not drive if you have consumed more than the legal alcohol limit, which is 250 micrograms per litre of breath or 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. It is difficult to say how many alcoholic drinks you can have before you reach these limits. It depends on many factors, including: - whether you are male or female - your size - how much food you have eaten.

Because of this, and because even small amounts of alcohol can affect your driving, the best advice is: if you drink at all, don't drive. If you've been drinking, call a taxi, take a bus or get someone who hasn't been drinking, such as a friend or 'dial-a-driver', to drive you home.

Drugs and driving The law also says you must not drive if you have taken any type of drug that may affect your driving ability. If you are prescribed drugs by a doctor, always ask if they will have any effect on your driving. Is it now time to add a new family member to the household. There are lots of important things to think about before picking your new cat or ki en. The first step to starting a long and lasting friendship with a cat is, of course, choosing the cat—or, more to the point, choosing the cat that's right for you or the cat choosing you. By definition, this is the biggest decision you'll make regarding your cat. And it's an important decision, because a cat—unlike an item of clothing, a video-game console, or a must-have electronic gadget—is a living, breathing being who will need your care and a ention for the next 10, 15, or even 20 years – adopting an animal is for the life of that animal not until you are bored and have changed your mind. Ki ens are adorable, curious, playful, and full of energy where adult cats are usually calmer, less bouncy, and less mischievous in comparison to a ki en. When choosing a cat or a ki en please keep your family and living circumstances in mind. If you already have pets, you have to consider them as well before bringing home a cat. The good news is that most cats can get along with other cats and - despite the common stereotype - most dogs can get along with cats. But it's not necessarily easy to get them used to one another, and sometimes it can be impossible. Some cats may be perfectly happy as an only cat and could really resent a newcomer. Once you've made a carefully thought-out decision, be an ideal pet parent by providing your cat with everything she needs to live a happy and healthy life. We have lots of ki ens and adult cats available for adoption, waiting for a forever home at the SPCA shelter. All of our cats and ki ens are de-sexed, vet checked, had flea and worm treatment, a vaccination, micro-chipped and will be registered on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. There is an adoption fee which helps us cover costs – come and have a look, you are certain to fall in love with your new family member. 43 Alach Street, Greerton, Tauranga Ph.: 578 0245. The book Alcoholics Anonymous, the basic text of A.A., says: "We alcoholics are men and women who lost the ability to control our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control. All of us felt at times that we are regaining control, but such intervals - usually brief - were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible de-moralisation." If the above describes you, you think you have a problem with alcohol, or you know someone who does, here you will find: a phone number to call and talk to someone who understands, the address of an A.A. meeting near you, details on how to order a book or pamphlet about A.A. and alcoholism, stories of alcoholics who have come to A.A., a copy of Mainstay, A.A.’s meeting in print and much more… Standard Reoccurring information:Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. For more information please call 0800 229 6757 or visit AA.org.nz You are welcome to attend an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous at 11 Victoria Road Mount Maunganui St Peters Hall every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. There are other meetings every day of the week in Tauranga you can get the details from the AA web site or by ringing 0800 229 6757. Every single injury and death caused by dr unk dr iving is totally preventable. There are still far too many such preventable accidents. Unfortunately, in spite of all the warnings, advice, TV Ads, road signs, alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious problem that tragically effects many victims, families and friends DON’T DRINK & DRIVE.

Printers Printers have progressively become cheaper while also having more features. Much like computers really. And until we finally attain the goal of a paperless office, physical bits of paper are still essential for some things. Printers tend to be covered by two broad categories. Inkjet type printers that use liquid water-based ink to print on the paper, and Laser printers that use heat to melt toner onto the paper. Before deciding on what printer is best for you, you tend to try and estimate how many pages you will print in a week or month. Then, consider if colour printing is needed. And finally, if scanning or copying would be used. Historically, if you didn’t print much, then inkjets would be the best option as they are cheap, but with a relatively high cost per page. Lasers were more expensive, but had a much lower cost per page, and could print thousands of pages a month with no hassle. But, things have changed, and one manufacturer in particular seems to have cornered the low cost laser printing market. But if you need colour, or scanning/copying, then you’ll need to look at one of the many ink jets on the market. The biggest problem with inkjets is the cost of the ink cartridges. Which sometimes can cost as much as the printer itself. You can reduce this cost by using refill services or by using compatible ink cartridges. And remembering that printing photos using far more ink than printing a letter or essay. One thing I do like about modern inkjet printers is that most now have a wireless option to allow easy printing from your laptop without needed to plug in a cable. I can give further advice on your printing needs, give me a call (see my ad for contact details).

There is a well-known link between diabetes and depression. However, the emotional impact of the condition is still not always recognised. Being diagnosed and living with diabetes can affect people in very different ways. Some people find they are able to cope with diabetes and it has little effect on their day-to-day life, while others may find that it turns their lives upside down. Finding diabetes difficult to cope with is a common feeling and does not mean that you are doing something wrong.

A Remembrance Service is planned for Tuesday 10 March and will include the blessing of messages wri,en as part of our annual Trees of Remembrance appeal. The new community partnership between Hospice NZ and Farmers took the na onwide appeal to a whole new level. Funds raised locally will remain here, enabling Waipuna Hospice to care for pa ents and their families living in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty. We are really grateful for the support of individuals, clubs and businesses and look forward to your involvement in upcoming events and volunteer opportuni es in 2015. Keep in touch by liking us www.facebook.com/WaipunaHospiceTauranga and visit www.waipuna-hospice.co.nz for more informa on.

Many people find their own way to deal with these feelings, but for some they continue to struggle to come to terms with how their diabetes makes them feel. Sometimes these feelings can develop into depression. Although people with diabetes have a higher chance of showing signs of depression, not all people with diabetes who are finding it difficult to cope with will develop depression. WHAT MAY HELP? Some people find talking their feelings through with someone close or with a healthcare professional can be helpful. Local support groups offer the opportunity to meet other people with the same condition who may have experienced similar feelings Counselling may be available through your GP practice If you are continually feeling low seek help. Early Detection The early detection of cancer means finding cancer before there are symptoms or as soon as possible after they develop. Its aim is to find the cancer before it has time to spread to other parts of the body. Early detection can help to reduce the time before diagnosis and, hopefully, lower the mortality rates for many types of cancer. It is important to always seek medical advice as soon as you notice any unusual changes. Unfortunately, while some cancers have early warning signs that are easy to identify many do not. The important message is to be aware of any changes that are out of the ordinary for you and to see a health professional as soon as possible to discuss what these changes may mean.

CHANGING SCHOOLS Moving up to College or high school can be a major step in some children’s life. Some handle it well and others struggle. Most students keep their head down while they are figuring out their new school and the first two terms fly along with positive stories at home about the new routines, teachers and learning. By term three (for the early developers) adolescence starts raising its head, and with major internal changes occurring boys head to their cave and girls go off to …..I’ve never figured that one out! College, or High School, however can bring a new found freedom as students interact with one hour long subject teachers who may not be up with the relationship malfunctions from Intermediate, petty scores to settle from primary, or just plain bullying. In reality the group is less micro managed by the teachers and expected to self-manage more. Every year there is usually a handful of students who develop major issues at College, they either don’t cope with the transition of changes from the College structure or they become noticed by their peers for their louder than usual antics. They are, at times, dealing with students who are up to five years older than themselves who are attending College because they want to, rather than have to. These older students may not have yet realised that a few shorts years ago they may have been that obnoxious loud kid disturbing the class or just making a noise, and may be less accepting of a distraction from their learning. All this can be a growth cycle leading into bullying, which can lead (over time) to the child and the school parting. Along the way attendance levels drop, life at home becomes harder for all concerned, and the road planned disappears from view. Conversations at home about the social side of school can help and questions about what the young person thought about others behaving badly will help the young person to self-reflect, hopefully come to their own answers. Talking through reported conversations can work very well for girls, for boys it’s a case of keep asking questions, keep supporting them in their settling into a new school and remind both genders that they have the skills to cope with most things that College can throw at them. Should you as a parent have concerns, communicate with the school, sometimes you may not get the answer you want as schools may see things differently, but keep talking to them, and to your child. If you need to go and visit with College staff regarding an incident take a friend along with you, (just to sit and listen) they will help you to debrief afterwards. A move to College could be the last major life transition that you will walk alongside them this closely. Enjoy College years as a parent, for during their time at college they will grow and develop allowing YOU, the parent to move onto the next stage of YOUR life as your cherub becomes more independent Enjoy the start of the Education year!

CC’s Bay Of Plenty Community News Letter, Phone: 021 501 200... Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 17) WATER SAFTEY We have a high rate of water drowning's and it’s time people got more responsible. Children can’t gage and don’t understand the safety required around water. As parent's its up to us to see that safety is at all times the focus when taking children to the beach, rivers and pools. It’s a great way to cool down and have fun but danger lurks at very minute. You don’t leave children while you go to the toilet or sit and get involved in a book or a chat with people… EYES have to be on children every minute. Don’t think just because there maybe a life guard around that you can be slack and relax. You are responsible for your child/children … Yes a life guard is there to watch over the swim area to help anyone that gets into difficulty … BUT they are not your baby sitters. They ar e watching over many people and ar e ther e to help you if you need it. Let’s take time to thank all the life guards who give their time to help keep people safe over the summer period. Beaches are filled with holiday people enjoying their holidays. However in this meant to be happy time they are dealt with some trying times retrieving children, adults and surfers from the waters. Unfortunately some out comes are not happy ones. Our statistics are too high for this time of the year … Come on people wake up think and take more care. Just to bring to attention “Dear wee Jack” such a sweet wee boy was not in the water swimming just on the beach around the rocks with his family. This loss is just cruel and unfair. Hopefully people learn from this tragedy and be more alert on how fast tragic situation can happen with not only children but adults around water. Keep Jake in your hearts and minds with the reminder of safety at all times. Beach: Check for r ips, Swim within the flags, Listen to life guar ds instr uctions. Keep watch at all times. Sunscr een and plenty of fluid to prevent dehydration

Rip currents A rip is a strong current of water running out to sea. They can be very dangerous to swimmers as they can sweep you out to sea quickly and easily. When swimming at the beach keep an eye on the beach for any lifeguard's trying to communicate with swimmers they maybe trying to call you in, or move up the beach. When you go out to swim you also have to be responsible and use your brains by swimming within your means. Don’t go out further than you can handle.

Rip currents can be hard to identify, look for these features: Discoloured or murky brown water caused by sand stirred up off the bottom A smoother surface with much smaller waves, with waves breaking on either side Debris floating out to sea A rippled look, when the water around is generally calm.

If you get caught in a rip: Don’t panic Don’t try to swim against the rip back to shore Let the rip carry you out until the current subsides Then swim parallel to the beach for 30-40 metres before swimming back to shore If you get tired or become frightened, stay calm, raise your arm, call for help and wait for assistance.

ROCK FISHING Tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Take a mobile. Never fish alone. Avoid alcohol as it affects your judgment and slows reaction. Follow the advice of safety signs. Don’t trust ropes or cables attached to the rocks. Beware of large and unexpected waves. Never turn your back on the ocean. Be prepared to quickly climb to safety. Have an escape route for large waves and don’t get stranded by the incoming tide. Maintain a safe distance from the water especially when there is swell. Avoid surf spray or wet rocks that have been swept by spray. Beware of slippery rocks. Follow advice of safety signs. If a fish or equipment is swept into a dangerous area or the ocean, leave it there. If in doubt about the conditions or your own ability find a safer location. If you’re on the west coast, be aware you may not be used to this type of coastline. Because of the wind, there are almost always large waves. Be extra careful when waves or the swell are rising on an incoming tide. Fishing can be unsafe at these times as you could be cut off from an escape route. Be prepared. Carry a length of rope, first aid kit, flashlight and a handheld flare. Have an emergency plan. Learn first aid for hypothermia and injuries such as concussion, cuts, sprains, dislocation and fractures. In an emergency, call 111. More information http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Boating Safety Reminders (Use Your Common Sense) Life jackets You never know what your day holds for you. When going out in your boats use your brains and show responsibility of a boat owner. Safety precautions should always be set in place in cases of emergency. Wearing a life jacket can increases your survival time in the water. See all your passengers and yourself wear life jackets – take them, wear them! They are no good on the floor of the boat… Also see that your life jackets are in good working order and the right size for your passengers. The Skipper The skipper is responsible for the safety for everyone aboard and for the safe operation of the boat. Stay within the limits of your boat and your experience. Keep your speed within speed limits, and be on watch for water sport users… skiers, disc’s, swimmers, children, jump ramps. Communications Make sure there are two separate waterproof ways of communicating so that in the case of an emergency you have higher chance of communication if needed. Enclose phones in waterproof bags to help keep them dry. Always let people know where you are planning to go and what time to expect you back. If you change your plans notify your people so they know what and where you are. Weather The weather can be unpredictable rain wind cloudy and rough waves. Check the local marine weather forecast before you go out in the boat. The long and short of this is don’t go out in the boat if the weather is changeable and may become dangerous. Consider the size of your boat and the number of people you are planning to take out. Alcohol DON’T take alcohol on the boat! Safe boating and alcohol do not mix. Don’t put your passengers and yourself at risk, leave the alcohol at home. Things can change quickly on the water. You need to stay alert and aware. An intoxicated person in charge of a boat is not able to judge things clearly. Take care on the water and enjoy it … see you get home safe don’t become another drowning statistic

What is success. It’s a mixture of having a flair for the thing that you are doing; knowing that it is not enough, that you have got to have hard work and a certain sense of purpose
