CC’s Bay Of Plenty Community News Letter, Phone: 021 501 200 ... Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 2) Hello everyone … Well November is upon us now with Guy Fawks on the 5th. Please take care when letting of your fireworks. With negligence there is risk to people’s property. Don’t let fireworks off close to people’s houses or your own. How about thinking of peoples pets. They get so stressed over the months of fireworks. I have been to see my vet for drugs for my dogs as I canot comfort them from their fear. It is not right that we have to drug animals and not only for the 5th Nov but for months while people are letting them off…. Why do we not just have public displays??? They would be so much safer and the displays are amazing. We welcome advice, criticism, praise and wants good or bad so email me. Please enclose some form of contact (Phone Number/Email address) so I can contact you regarding any issues you wish to inform/share with me if required. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT

Many people believe that Domestic violence is only physical abuse. However, Domestic violence takes many different forms. It may also be psychological, sexual, financial or spiritual violence.

• Physical Violence includes hitting, pinching, spitting, slapping, pushing, punching, kicking, burning, stabbing, strangulation, suffocating & shooting. It may also include threats to cause harm • Psychological Violence (sometimes referred to as emotional or verbal abuse) includes put-downs, name calling, jealousy, harassing, screaming, using degrading language, insults, criticism, harming pets or animals, isolation from family and friends, and threats to leave the relationship or to commit suicide if the victim does not co-operate • Sexual Violence includes unwanted touching or sexual activity, raping and forcing victim into unwanted sexual practices. It may include control over birth control, forced pregnancies or abortions and transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Financial Violence occurs when an individual uses finances to control another individual. This could include forcing a person to hand over all or part of their salary or by denying someone access to their own finances, making victim ask or beg for money, forceful removal of money from victim ● Spiritual Violence occurs when an individual uses religious or spiritual matters to control another, such as forcing another to follow a particular faith or give up their religion or justifying their violence as religiously and spiritually acceptable

Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 7) There is nothing worse than losing all your photos, files and documents due to a computer failure. Especially if you don’t have a backup copy anywhere. It is sometimes possible to get all your files back after a failure. But the safest and most reliable way is to backup your important files on a regular basis. This allows you to restore files quickly and easily. In the past this involved copying files to floppy disk, or to a tape drive. However, with the advent of relatively cheap USB connected disk drives costing around $100, backing up your important files has become very easy. Also, with various cloud based services, you can backup to the internet, although that assumes you have enough data allowance to cover the transfer of your files to the cloud. You can do a backup yourself using drag-and-drop to copy files from your computer to your backup device. Or, you can use any backup software that is already on your computer, or that came with your backup device. Finally, if the backup is the only copy you have of something, then I recommend making a backup of the backup. That way you have two copies, just in case one fails. You could even store a backup somewhere else. There is an old saying “You can never have too many backups”, and having an extra backup is better than losing an important file. DIABETES AND DRIVING Most people who have diabetes are allowed to drive, however it is important to be aware that there are certain risks. If you know the risks then you can avoid them. If your diabetes is newly diagnosed and you are on treatment that is being adjusted, it may not be safe for you to drive. You should check with your doctor or nurse. Low blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia) are dangerous for drivers with diabetes. For people taking medication (tablets or insulin) low blood glucose levels should be avoided when driving as these can seriously affect your ability to drive. High blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia) are also dangerous when driving as these can make you feel very tired and unwell. You should not drive if your blood glucose levels are outside the recommended levels. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Take precautions when driving. Check your blood glucose levels regularly and stop driving if you feel unwell in any way. Always have meals and snacks before and during long journeys. Do not delay meal times. Keep a supply of glucose tablets, long lasting fruit juice and muesli bars in the glove box. It is recommended that people with diabetes avoid alcohol completely if driving because of the risk of low blood sugars. Graffiti or Noise People are entitled to make a reasonable level of noise, but everyone also has the right to have excessive noise stopped or reduced, provided the noise is under human control. Graffiti vandalism (tagging) is a crime that affects the whole community. It can lower property values and encourage more vandalism and other types of crime. It also costs a lot of money to clean up – money that could be better spent on other things for Tauranga City. If you have an issue with noise, you can call the Council on 07 577 7000 at any time of the day or night to report it. If you see someone tagging phone 111 immediately. The Police have a better chance of taking legal action if they can catch an offender in the act. For general graffiti reporting please call the Council 07 577 7000.

Pet Disaster Survival Kit Taking care of our pets in an emergency is really important, as they can rarely care for themselves. Creating a pet disaster survival kit can help to make sure your animal is safe in the event of a disaster. Here are some important things to consider: Emergency contact list – include details for SPCA, local council, vet and animal centres. Carry box for your animal Copies of important information – vaccination card, vet record, photo of pet (helps identification if needed) Essential supplies - Bottled water, dry food, plastic bags and paper towels Ample blankets/bedding and treats Collar and large name tag (including animal’s name, address and phone number) First aid kit – bandages, iodine, first aid cream, absorbent cotton, sharp scissors, etc) “Animals Inside” sticker – available from the SPCA

Surviving floods Floods are New Zealand’s number one hazard in terms of frequency, losses and declared civil defence emergencies. Floods are usually caused by continuous heavy rain or thunderstorms but can also result from tsunami and coastal storm inundation. A flood becomes dangerous if:

the water is very deep or travelling very fast the floods have risen very quickly the floodwater contains debris, such as trees Before the flood Find out from your local council if your home or business is at risk from flooding Know where the closest high ground is and how to get there Make a Household Emergency Plan (including an Emergency Grab Bag) During the flood Listen to your local radio stations Put your household emergency plan into action and check your getaway kit. Where possible, move pets inside or to a safe place, and move stock to higher ground. Consider using sandbags to keep water away from your home. Fill bathtubs, sinks and storage containers with clean water Do not attempt to drive or walk through floodwaters unless it is absolutely essential. After the flood Help others if you can, especially people who may require special assistance. Throw away food including canned goods and water that has been contaminated Check with your local council or public health authority before using the water. If your property is damaged, take notes and photographs for insurance

A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, "I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles." "She did," he replied. "But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?" A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead." It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner, "What are you charged with?" "Doing my Christmas shopping early", replied the defendant. "That's no offense", said the judge. "How early were you doing this shopping?" "Before the store opened." How do you know Santa Claus has to be a man? No woman is going to wear the same outfit year after year! Why did the little girl change her mind about buying her grandmother a packet of handkerchiefs for Christmas? She said "I could not work out what size her nose was!

Family Works Northern’s WAVE (Women against Violence Education) programme helps women become aware of the dynamics of domestic violence and builds their strength to make positive decisions for themselves and their families. Often the women who attend the first few sessions are apprehensive, simply because of the fear of the unknown. When working alongside women who have experienced domestic violence, it’s important to have true empathy and a non-judgmental approach – a “heart for the people”.

It is a privilege, as a facilitator of the programme, to witness the growing self-esteem and confidence of each courageous woman who attends. WAVE runs for two hours once a week for 14 weeks. Your toddler So you have this wonderful toddler, and you are off to playgroup, great fun, you think, he can play and I can have a catch up with the girls. Shortly after arrival it all goes rapidly downhill and there is a fight, or a screaming match and YOUR kid is in the middle of it. You get embarrassed and wind up either really angry and trying not to show it, or you suddenly remember an appointment and rush away from playgroup. So what happened to your child? Why did they hit that boy? It may have been because they were overwhelmed by the situation and they didn’t have the skills to deal with having their toy taken away from them. So next time, maybe you need to stay close to your little one and notice the toy getting grabbed away from him, however don’t be the helicopter parent and fly in and fix it, sometimes you just need to wait and watch. Watch to see what he will do, after all YOU know your child, you will know if there is going to be a reaction……well. Usually! Wait and watch, for him to either find another toy, or a game to play, if he is capable of self discovery of other things, that’s good, however to help him to become more assertive, and to help develop his speech you could go and ask him if he is ok with that boy taking his toy. If he is struggling with this one you may need to help him with some words, ‘Can you say My Bucket!’ or to be there to help him find the courage to ask for it back, ‘Could you ask (that boy) for your Bucket back?’ and then to deal with the answer, which is most likely to be NO! Should your little one erupt and you can’t stop it, you do need to react, however have this planned out beforehand. Some parents use a naughty spot or time out spot and some even carry a square of material in their bag which comes out when your child needs a ‘special break’ with just him and Mum. Once that is done turn this into a teaching moment and talk to him about what he does when he gets REALLY angry, give him some ideas about what he could do, be clear though, hitting is not the right way to sort things out! If you are there helping him deal with the frustration of not knowing what to do, and helping him find ways of dealing with it there should be less hitting and maybe even less tantrums Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Reporting child abuse Anyone can report suspected child abuse in this country and people who call Child, Youth and Family can ask to remain anonymous. We are now heading into our busiest time of the year - kitten season; when a dedicated group of people dust off their cages, wash bedding, bowls and litter trays, then take a deep breath in preparation for the incoming deluge of unwanted and generally dumped pregnant cats, mother cats and kittens or litters of young kittens. These people are the Tauranga SPCA foster families who care for these kittens until they are old enough to be adopted – usually about 8 weeks old. These kind people willingly and lovingly give up hours of each day for weeks, and in a number of cases, months, to look after the dozens of unwanted animals. All animals are fed, toileted, groomed given lots of play and love before being settled down in a comfy bed for a snooze until the whole cycle starts again – too often our precious resources are used up caring for these poor unfortunate cast-offs, giving them a second chance at life, and a new forever home. Most of these animals are friendly – obviously once treasured pets. A number of the mother cats are young probably their first litter. Many animals are scared, starving, confused and some have almost given up on life – wouldn’t you if you were suddenly cast out of your warm comfortable home, into the gutter, pregnant, or with youngsters depending on you for survival. We couldn’t get through the summer kitten season if it wasn’t’ for our foster families, last year we had hundreds of kittens in foster which would be impossible for us to house at the shelter so you can imagine how important our fosters are and why we always need more. If you think this is something you could do please give us a call Ph. 578 0245 for more information, we will provide you with all the necessities required to ensure the kittens get the best of care.

It can be difficult to know what to say or do to support a person who is having suicidal thoughts. Here are some ideas: Things to do

Try to keep calm, breathe. Believe and respect the person. If they want to talk, listen or find them someone who will listen to them, and let them talk honestly. If they don’t want to talk, just be there. Let them know you realise this is very hard for them. Try to make the environment safe from any means of harm. If you are very concerned, get help immediately, contact your doctor or local mental health service 0800 800 508. If you need to, call 111.

Things to avoid

Judging or making the person feel guilty for feeling as they do. Laughing at or shaming the person. Ignoring them. Getting very angry at them. Daring them to do it. Leaving them alone or without support (support doesn’t necessarily have to be provided by you)

Telling them to snap out of it Minimising the problem

Christmas This is a expensive time of year for familys with

Christmas shopping, extra food, visitors, and travel. Try and stay in control of your finance over this time. Don’t go out and put yourself into debt to try and impress others. Times are tuff at the moment with far to much stress on the families now without adding to it. A good way of ensuring that you control your spend is to try and pay with cash. It may be a lot cheaper. However if you make your purchases using a credit card and then make only the minimum payment, it will cost you in interest. A credit card with a starting credit balance of $2,000 and with a rate of interest of 18% will cost the card user about $30 in interest charges per month…watch for ‘late fees’ always make sure you pay a few days before the actual due-date to ensure payment was processed on time. Have a budget and stick with it. Impulse purchases can really knock a family budget out of shape and bring stress on the family when there is not enough money to pay the bills and food. Sometimes, one can be tempted by special deals and multi-pack sales. Do you really need all those extra products right now? Chances are that the same deals will be on offer in a few weeks. Before you go out to shop take time to look at your accounts and due dates and then make sure you have enough money to make your payments on time … and then be realistic with how much you have to go and spend on the extras you think you want and need. Remember Christmas is not about Gifts it’s about spending time with family and friends… if you buy the big expensive gift for your friend then you make them feel they have to return one in the same way and maybe they also can’t afford it. Don’t feel embarrassed by discussing this with your extended families and friends … I think you will find it a relief to know that they too don't have a lot of spare cash to try and make expensive choices which is beyond their budget as well. Your families getting together for a Christmas lunch well do the pot luck dinner … maybe talk with each other about who can or will bring what so you have the meal covered … supply your own drinks BYO. This also takes the stress off the ones hosting the dinner as they don't have to be in the kitchen all day preparing food for everyone. Lots of families choose to go and book a meal at a place of their choice this can also work out cheaper and then you can relax and enjoy your time with each other while dinning and {6 ft tall, fluffy adorable bear} enjoying that Christmas dinner.
