FAMILY VIOLENCE CAN HARM YOUR CHILD FOR LIFE Babies and infants are precious. Everything babies and toddlers experience affects their brains forever. The way you treat your children counts – and it counts long term. Children are not tough. They are not too young to notice. They do not just get over it. Love care and attention will help children to become happy and stable adults. Shouting, hitting, violence, abuse and ignoring your child have a very bad effect on your baby’s and young child’s brain development. This can cause problems later at school; as teenagers; as adults. Parenting can be tough but one of the most important things you can do is provide a safe home, calm and free from violence for your children. If you get early help the risk of the children suffering long term effects will be less. To get help talk to someone you trust. A support agency that helps family's. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. .
The roads in town are for everyone. We should expect pedestrians and cyclists. About one third of crashes are caused by SPEEDING If a child steps out 45 metres away and the vehicle is travelling at 60km/h by the time the alert driver reacts and brakes, the car will still be travelling at 44km/h when the child is hit.
There is a one in three chance that the child will die. ►If a vehicle hits a person at 50km/h, the risk of death is 40% ►If a vehicle hits a person at 60km/h, the risk of death is 70% ►If a vehicle hits a person at 70km/h, the risk of death is 96%
Kill your speed, not a child SLOW DOWN Just a reminder know where the children are when backing your car. They are fast on their feet and can put themselves in danger with out knowing it. Young children are unable to judge and understand what danger is or understand what happens if they run behind a backing car they are usually excited to see someone or go somewhere.

Jury Service
Many of us are called into do Jury Service giving up our time from work and commitments. We are expected, in fact demanded that we have to do this … that it is an obligation that we must fill if we are summoned … or otherwise we can be fined for not turning up. When a public member writes in with concerns of their safety for personal reasons and still told it's not a good enough reason to not attend, brings me to the thought that our safety is not important ... Or you are an owner manger of a business with no staff and time commitments … it’s not a good enough reason to not attend.??? … So our work and jobs aren't important?
How is it that they can demand us to give up our work and attend days in court at a rate of $30.00 a day? Most people are struggling to pay their bills and keep their family’s going on their wages now but are expected to forfeit hours from work. The inconvenience of getting behind in work and loosing pay or business seems to be not important. The people who insist on this are collecting their wages and yet have the right to demand others to give theirs up because they say we have a duty to attend Jury Service. I also have a problem that the average person/Joe Blogs is not trained in the field of jury service... it is only their perspective and their decision of what they hear and think is right. Why can’t the public do the Lawyers job or the Judges, the Social Workers, Psychologists job after all they are choosing what another person before the court systems, out come will be. The above mentioned have studied several years to learn and understand how systems, the politics’ and the way people think and work … They are professionals in their chosen field of work with a healthy income that one cannot do or get unless they are trained. They are paid for their time. … So why are the Jury Service people not paid ??? I thought we had a minimum wage system???... After all it is what they say that produces the outcome for the defendant … guilty or not guilty??? I consider this a pretty important decision for one to make … One has to leave their work …. Like everyone else they still have bills and mortgages to pay. There is a difference of being asked than being demanded to do Jury Service… It should be a choice as some people think they have the answers to defendants cases and want to do Jury Service. So how are members of the public entitled to make decisions on people’s lifes that inflict prison sentences where they have had no training? There are Jury service people that have their own baggage and skeletons in their cupboards that are not so great. I do not see that it is the public’s place to be forced into doing jury service due to lack of training, knowledge and lack of payment for their time. This is a personal input from someone who does not have any faith in the court, jury, law and prison systems because the outcomes are not working … Systems are not working. For me I have a true belief that you can’t put everyone in the one basket ... Systems do this. C Foster
Company’s Running Their Businesses On Their Employees Cars IT IS NOT an employee’s responsibility to supply cars for their Job. Here are three samples of advertised job requirements Eg 1) Having your full license and own car is essential to applying for this role, and you will be paid a mileage rate of $0.35c/km for any driving that you do. Eg 2) Full Drivers Licence (required) … Access to Car (required) Eg 3: SUPPORT WORKERS REQUIRED Experience Support Workers needed Must have license and own vehicle Have you noticed when looking for jobs that there are more and more companys requesting you supply a car? If you don’t have a car and full clean driver’s licence you can’t have the job! A clean licence is not the problem … Its having to supply a car to the job!!! Let’s look at this … if you get the job in most cases you are more than likely on the minimum pay rate and more than likely struggling to survive to pay your own way. You are expected to use your car … petrol and wear and tear with a mileage rate … in the first eg .35cents km this in no way covers your petrol. There are some companies that pay 80cents km even this is on the short side of covering the running of a car. (Petrol, tyres, wear and tear, insurance, mechanical repairs) How have we allowed this to become part of job expectations??? In some jobs you have to have a mobile phone …. Using your credit and txt allowance. These are huge costs the companies are saving at their employees expense. Why is the employee supplying the tools for companys they work for? When your phone gets damaged or lost the company is not the one replacing it. People working for them-selves have to supply their own car / tools to work within their business. Let’s use the Council for an example they have a fleet of vehicles for their staff to use when out on jobs I’m sure most have seen their cars on the road … If a company has outward work to be done would you not think they should supply the vehicle for their staff members to use and if they need or want to communicate a work phone? If your car is damaged out on the road …then hopefully one has insurance to claim for the damage…. But then you are slammed with the no claims rate …increases of your insurance let alone maybe a wrecked car and problems of transport for your family until things are fixed. Warning: Have you checked your insurance cover are you covered if you are using your car for a commercial business??? … Do you have commercial insurance cover? As you are using your car to transport your works clients …. Or attending a work job? This may fall into commercial use not private use of your vehicle. Without naming companys/work places … are you a person that has to use your car to transport clients or complete your work/job for your employer??? Again this is another system that has got out of hand. If people stopped offering their private cars for prospective jobs then the system would have to change as the employers and corporate businesses need staff … they would have to start to supply cars and the tools for the employee to do the job. People can correct this if they work together. I see this as financial abuse to the hard working employee … Food for thought what do you think …. Love to hear some feedback. C Foster

Flexible, with Reasonable Ph: 07 579 9930 Cell: 027 630 8568 Caring for your laptop. Laptop computers have a few key failure areas. Screen, hinges, USB ports, and mouse buttons. The key thing to remember is to take care as light weight laptops are mainly made of plastic and don’t use much metal in their construction. The LCD screen (aka panel) is about 90% plastic, with the other 10% being liquid crystal and some circuitry. So, be careful when cleaning the screen and use approved LCD screen cleaners. Never use anything intended for glass as it may permanently damage the plastic. Laptop hinges are made of metal, so are strong, but are screwed into the plastic base and plastic cover of the laptop. Any excessive force will cause those hinges to pop right out causing irreparable damage. Mouse buttons on laptops are made using weak plastic welds. If you press the button too hard you will break the weld and the mouse button will never work the same again. This might be the signal to buy a USB mouse. USB ports aren’t designed for much sideways movement. So, for example, when using memory sticks, be careful not to bump them as you could break the memory stick or even the port on the laptop. The general thing with laptops is to just be careful. I can repair most things, but parts can sometimes take a while to arrive. Give me a call (07-579-9930 or see my ad for other contact details). -David (Kings Computers)

NEED HELP WITH PARENTING Parenting is probably one of the hardest and most important jobs. For many though its the one job where the least amount of training and preparation is provided. Parenting can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. Some times it can also have its difficulties. Many parents will experience feelings of uncertainty or being overwhelmed. The demands of parenting, along with maintaining the household and work commitments, can make it a challenge. If you are experiencing these feelings, don’t despair, there are programmes in your community that can help you with parenting assistance and support. Incredible Years is one such parenting programme. This is a course which runs weekly for two and a half hours each session for 14 weeks. Parents with similar parenting needs come together in a group to share their problems. They discuss solutions and also hear examples of day-to-day strategies that will help them improve relationships with their children. NOVEMBER HOROSCOPES Aries There could be a spanner in the works, literally, early November. The workplace could experience some mechanical breakdowns or building issues. The electrical fuse could blow in your love life too. Take heart, your friends can help to pull you through. Taurus At the end of the day, it is you who has to make a decision. Be careful with signing contracts. Time is actually on your side even in your personal relationships. Can you cope with wayward partners? Oh…the stress of it all! Gemini Little steps to make big gains in the long run by dealing with all those minor financial concerns. The sun will shine in your workplace if you are systematic. Even though the pressure from loved ones is not welcome, you must grin and bear it. Cancer You may have some free time for planning this month. It isn’t a positive time for drawing up documents but being clear about your position will be helpful. It is also a good time to act tough because the chaos around you is affecting everyone. Leo You are the lucky one, the sun is shining in your favour. However, if you are a manager, you will need to be creative even with your labourers. Be resourceful in your love life and be generous towards extended family too. Virgo Diplomacy is high on the agenda. Every encounter is being monitored and can therefore lead to an upset. A choice will be made that will affect your future. Things may not work out as planned in some of your projects. Your charisma will be your best asset. Libra You will feel a close collaboration at work but be warned about being tripped up by circumstances outside your influence. It is a giddy time for singles. Lots of unique happenings and entertainment. Hold on to your hat. Scorpio This is the time to be ambitious and ‘Give it a go!’ if you are up to it. Emotionally, you will need to take control and be ready for a mid-November crisis when your pride could get in the way. This could be a painful time in personal relationships. Rule out revenge. Sagittarius You may not be able to help friends and colleagues this month even though you would like to. The results of meetings may be precarious, so assess people on their actions not their words. At the end of the month, without doubt, you may find your soul mate. Capricorn You will need to rely on your resources to pull through this month. Be true to yourself and consider learning new skills to get results. Avoid injuries in sporting activities. Being considerate but not indulgent is recommended. Aquarius Be confident, you will finish your projects. Reserve some resources for the future. There is no point in arguing with family or lovers. At work, towards the end of the month, preventing technical problems will be necessary. Pisces Mm…Goody! It seems that you can, at last, move towards some of your financial goals. However, be alert around chummy workmates. Test the waters first. Enjoy watching the movies with your darling even though you may disagree on a few points of view.

Make sure your tree is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit in case of an emergency. Some lights are either for indoor or outdoor use, usually not both. Worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections are not safe. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before you use or connect lights and decorations. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. Make sure your decorations are not broken/ sharp as children may hurt themselves. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger. Don’t dump in or around the house or garage dispose of it correctly Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards.
Holiday Cooking
PARTY SAFE Hey it’s party season that
Food plays a major part in holiday celebrations, please remember unattended cooking is very dangerous. Stay in the kitchen while you're frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove and move any oil or fat pans off the stove. Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, towels, etc.) away from your stovetop, including your apron or any long-sleeved shirt. Protect little ones from burns, keep them out of the kitchen while you're cooking. Have you checked your smoke detectors???? Do it now … they just might save a life in the case of an emergency. Don’t risk your home and most important your family and friends. See you have alarms on every level of your home especially near sleeping areas.
means fun times with friends. It’s great to be out having fun BUT party safe!!! Don’t think it can’t happen to you. People do spike drinks … Never leave your drink unattended. Unless you know who is buying your drink get it yourself.
(Don’t think it can’t happen to you)
BBQ’s Barbeques are always a great way of people getting together. Gas bottles should always be checked to see that they are not leaking gas. See that the BBQ is placed away from the foot traffic. Always have a bucket of water or a hose handy. Alcohol and BBQs are not a good combination. People who are drinking should not be in charge of the BBQ. Keep children away from the cooking area. Common sense is required which will prevent accidents happening. Always have a bucket of water handy in the case of fire or minor burns.
Stranger Danger Tips Always try to stay in sight of other people, don't go down back streets or road If you can remember the car number plate or the colour or make of car. If a stranger approaches either on foot or in a vehicle, move back from them. Don’t take any lollies or food from them If they attempt to talk to you or ask for help for any reason, don't go to them stay back. Run away as fast as you can, if you are feeling scared Try and remember what the person looks like and what they are wearing. Yell for help as you run and try to stay in sight of other people Tell someone (a teacher, a parent or police officer or any other trusted adult) about what happened immediately. Always stay alert to who's around if you are out alone or with friends, Always stay in groups If possible. It’s much safer to be in groups. Always look after each other when you are out.
Contacts: Always have emergency numbers with you. Parents, Friends, Emergency no: 111, Taxi numbers. Always let family know where you are and who you are with. Drink: Don’t drink and drive… make sure you have a sober driver or order a taxi. Don’t get in a car with someone that has been drinking. Make sure you have money in case you need a taxi. ID: Always carry your ID so in an emergency you can be identified and family contacted if needed. Keep your ID safe. Mobile Phone: Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged … put your ID detail on your phone, Keep your mobile on you at all times in case you need it. Drink: Monitor your drink intake. Intoxication puts you in a vulnerable place for danger (disputes, rape, Alcatraz lockup) Don’t make an idiot of yourself that you can’t remember and regret. Carry some morals with you while out having fun. don't scull or mix your drinks. Groups: You are far more safe by staying in groups or with a friend. Take extra care if out on your own. Spiking Drinks: Buy your own drink. Don’t leave your drink un-attended!!! Keep your drink in sight at all. times and know who is around you. Don’t share drinks this can be a danger. It could be spiked
DRINK DRIVING
NEW YEARS EVE
We have all been warned about drink driving. We all know we are not to drink & drive …!!! As the ads on the TV say …. DON’T BE A BLOODY IDIOT! Have your partys enjoy your friends and celebrate Christmas but use your brains and organise your travel home or stay at your friends place. Taxis are available and in the end are cheaper than a drink driving ticket, loss of licence or living with the fact you have injured or killed another person. Remember if you kill another person or yourself you HURT & WRECK so many people’s life's.
As any other New Years Eve celebration most will end up on Marine Parade Celebrating the beginning of another year. Remember the liquor bans are in place so leave your alcohol at home. Don’t get yourself intoxicated/plastered and end up in Alcatraz for the night. Why so many have to make idiots of themselves baffles me. Watching the young teens last year disgrace themselves with girls wearing the next to nothing yelling and screaming and squatting to pee in the streets, guys pants hanging off them peeing everywhere drunk as skunks and people have the nerve to talk about animals! There is no shame when teens get liquor under their belt. The streets of Singapore would not tolerate this why do we accept this disgusting behaviour? We need to toughen up on idiot childish behaviour. Humans can be disgraceful creatures. Happy New Year.
Babysitters If you are going out and getting babysitters make sure you know who you are leaving with your children. It is better if the children know the babysitter so they feel secure and safe. See they have your contact numbers in case there is a problem. Make sure they have the house locked for safety .
KEEP DRINKS IN SIGHT Don’t leave your drinks unattended and any stage as it may put you in danger of someone spiking your drink, NEVER THINK it won’t happen to you! Bottle drinking is safe as you can put your thumb in the neck of the bottle. Buy your own drinks unless you know who you are allowing to do this for you. Party Safe

Library News
We are average, everyday people. A cross section of society. All walks of life are represented. Alcoholism does not discriminate against gender, age, race, occupation, political views, economic, social or religious backgrounds. We are people who normally would not mix. Yet there exists among us a friendliness and an understanding which is indescribably wonderful. Sharing a common peril is the powerful cement which binds us. Most of us have been unwilling to admit we were real alcoholics. The idea that we could someday control our drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. We have come to understand that, no matter how great our will power and our good intentions to "control" our drinking, this is a progressive illness. Over time we get worse, never better. If you are unsure whether or not you have a drinking problem, ask yourself... are you controlling your drinking, or is your drinking controlling you? The good news is, there is a solution...
Catching up with a book or two? Don’t let the library stop you! Here are three spanking new books with adventures via the written word just waiting for your perusal!
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. For more information please call 0800 229 6757 or visit www.aa.org.nz You are welcome to attend an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous at 11 Victoria Road Mount Maunganui St Peters Hall every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. There are other meetings every day of the week in Tauranga you can get the details from the AA web site or by ringing 0800 229 6757.
November Guy Fawkes … Fire works season For all those pet lovers from the month of November brings problems of terrified animals stressed to the point of having to drug them. For the animals this time of year is frightening. WHY should animals have to be drugged??? The human race seems to show in many ways the poor respect they have for animals ...the cruelty, poor care, killings and disrespect. The human race has a lot to answer for. Animals have rights just as we do. Animals hurt and fear as we do. Animals have hearts just the same as we do.
1001 Walks You Must Exper ience Befor e You Die, edited by Barry Stone, is a bit of a brick – or stone! - at 960 pages but can you turn down reading about such intriguing walks such as The Comic Strip Trail in Belgium or The Crypt Lake Trail in Canada? Cobra In The Bath by Miles Mor land is a swashbuckling tale complete with descriptions of meeting wayward fuel tankers on motorcycles, plane crashes that just happened to save lives, and cream-filled buns – what more can you want from a book? Derek Pratt’s book Great Waterways: Journeys has provided us with an unmatched guide to the more moist areas of England; whether you are walking, biking or canal boating. Trespassing an unwanted person. If a person is not welcome, the most common trespass is where you give the person a written notice stating they are trespassed from the property or premises. It is dated, name of the person trespassed, the place of trespass is noted and a reason signed by the person trespassing the offender. You then send a copy of the trespass to the police where it is lodged. If that person comes back to the property or premises you then ring and report it to the police, they then deal with the offending person. A verbal trespass is where you verbally trespass a person from the property or premises. You forward the details to the police to lodge and if the offender returns you ring the police to deal with the situation. Anybody can trespass a person from their property or premises.
