this is me Really nice to meet you. I hope you’ll enjoy! Work experience During all my life I have always known that I was supposed to create. It has always been a really strong feeling that I have never denied and I have always known that in the future I will still keep doing it. When I was older I understood that it also was about solving problems, it was like a mission. I’d liked to have a clear goal about what I was supposed to create. My name is Cindy Sjöblom and I am born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. I just graduated from the master’s program Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design. The following portfolio is a collection of some of my latest work executed during the last 3,5 years.

MFA project, 10 weeks 2014 October - 2014 December The project has been a collaboration together with my classmate Alexander Turesson. The projects focus has been the hole design process with a great collaboration together with nurses from Norlands University Hospital in Ume책. The task for the project has been to re-design the CPAP machine (Continues Positive Air Pressure) for the NICU environment (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).

Background Re-designing the CPAP machine for NICU When an premature infant is borne their lungs are usually underdeveloped. The infant is therefor in need of breathing assistant at the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) until fully developed. The breathing assistant is delivered by the CPAP (Continues Positive Air Pressure) machine. By providing the baby’s lungs with a consistant flow of air it gets easier for the infant to inflate the lungs and breath on its own.

Research Observing, analysing and problem finding

Commonly used equipment CPAP - Support berating by suppling lungs with air to prevent lungs to collapse. Humidifier & Water bag - Support CPAP by heating and humidify the air going into the infants lungs. Edi - Prevent transition to Ventilator/HFO by tracking breathing efforts and support with extra air. 4 syringe pumps – For food and medications. Ventilator/HFO - Pushes in and out air of the lungs and does the breathing for the infant (for extreme situations).

Professional feedback

After some intense research we started of the ideation with sketching, overall designs as well as details. We found that there were two interesting paths to continue with and later created mock-ups upon to easier evaluate.

Concept 1 - Includes: CPAP, Humidifier, Syringe Pumps and Ventilator/HFO. Concept 2 - CPAP, Humidifier and Edi. Merge of concept 1 & 2 - A restructure of concept 1 with details of concept 2.

During the whole project we’ve had contact with in total seven professionals including nurses, product developers and industrial designers. The feedback and insights has played a role upon the overall design as well as details.

Interface

Towards the end of the project details were explored to get the concept to its fully end. Functional details as well as the overall shape were explored. The aim was to find simple and effective solutions.

For the visual design language we wanted to aim for a simple and clean look to enhance a “one unit feeling that was our overall concept. Inspired by a simple, soft and embracing feeling we explored some different directions.

As a part of the concept the interface was explored to show how the overview and information was received from the physical products. Trying to simplify the interfaces as well as giving a good overview was key.

Easy access Turn away the table top to access the most commonly used connections. • • • • •

Inspiratory/Expiratory limb. Edi-catheter Pulse Oximeter Water chamber Water pump

Wall supplies To solve one of the big problems with cables and hoses we have combined the Air, Oxygen and Power connections, coming from the wall, into one cable. The individual units in the UNI System have all access to the wall supplies and data through the quick connections in the base plate.

Ventilator/HFO If an emergency situation occur and the infant immediately need a ventilator or HFO, the Ventilator/HFO module can easily be attached to the back of the CPAP and be operated immediately due to the quick connection system.

Water bag On the left side the water bag is hidden away and a small pump leading the water to the humidifiers water chamber.

Syringes Adjustable By pushing the foot pedal the CPAP machine can be adjusted in height to match the incubators. The screen is attached on a ball join and can separately be moved up and down, and adjusted to the preferred angle.

On the right side we have up to 4 plug and play syringe pumps which easily can be replaced. On each pump there is a screen which clearly indicates what’s inside the syringe.

Screen To get the best overview of all the equipment we only have one screen where all the settings can be adjusted. The big center eye controls only the oxygen level which is the most used setting on the CPAP machine. The main screen can be personalized depending on the information needed.

Pocket Device The doctor and nurses can get a quick overview of all the infants at the ward when not close by. When an alarm goes of it first alarms the device, instead of the machine, to not disturb the infant who need to rest as much as possible to facilitate growth.

MFA parametric modelling project 4,5 weeks 2012 February - 2012 April The project has been focused on parametric modelling. I’ve been using SolidWorks to build up an optional hand held product. The product should be combined with a small bicycle lamp that later on would fit into the 3D printed model.

+

Brand Identity Parametric modelling and product branding The main task in the project have been to integrate a small bicycle lamp into a hand held product, build it in Solid Works, 3D print the file and finally have a working prototype in your hand. The secondary task of the project have been to choose a brand to base the design on and including brand identity analyse and sketching. I choose The North Face and found their common design language were the following; Round meet sharp, Functional fields, Protection and Colour full. Below you can see some images from the different sport fields that The North Face are focusing their products towards.

FINAL RESULT Air cleaning system for construction workers

CleanAir is an air cleaning system for construction workers to avoid inhaling dust and other hazardous substances at indoor construction sites. CleanAir takes up the surrounding air and cleans it through a particle and gas filter on the back of it’s belt. It then pushes the air out around the users nose and mouth area which creates an air curtain that prevent the harmful substances to break through. CleanAir isn’t sitting tight against the face of the user and therefor gives a more natural feeling to use. CleanAir is light weight and easy to carry during longer periods of times. To quick get the mask away from the face the user can turn the mask above the head. CleanAir can be adjusted to fit different persons as well as it can be worn together with other safety equipment such as glasses, ear protection and helmet.

The concept Filtration

The air route and filtration

The concept consists of a belt and a head strap, witch is connected with a silicon hose. Air is taken in from the front of the belt which is then taken to the back where it gets filtrated. It then takes it up to the head strap and out through the air mask in the front of the mouth and nose area of the user. The air creates an air curtain which protects the user from inhaling dust and other hazardous substances in the surrounding air. The user can regulate the amount of air of the air curtain through one of the buttons on the front. He or she can also regulate the air inside the air mask which is the air that is breathing.

MFA project, 10 weeks 2013 April - 2013 June The project has been focused on the hole design process and we have been able to work close to different people in different professions dealing with train crashes or similar situations. During this project we have also been able to collaborate with industrial designers in the safety department from the German company Dr채ger and with PhD researchers from Ume책 University.

Background “Train accidents never happens - Train industry

Train accidents today and the cause Globally, and in Sweden, passenger railway transport is steadily increasing. Sweden has been relatively free from severe train crashes in the last decades, but the railway infrastructure is alarmingly worn and overburdened, which may be one reason for an increasing number of reported mishaps. Worldwide, major train crashes/ disasters are a frequent cause of mass casualty incidents. Several shortcomings, especially within the crash and post-crash phases cause severe consequences for the passengers. Source: Train Crashes - Consequences for Passengers, Rebecca Forsberg 2012

Research Visits, discussions and in-action practises. During the research phase we had the chance to meet a range of different professions connected to train crashes. This were the following; Fire fighters, paramedics, researchers in the area of train crashes and hypothermia and product designers from the German company Dr채ger Safety that focus in doing equipment for firefighters.

Lack of working space and to save time the victims are if possible drawn out on ladders

To get out victims faster they cut holes in the train if needed. But this can take hours and becomes loud inside the train

Concept details Chosen concept, technology and refinements

Absorbing honeycomb pattern Aluminium honeycomb core is an ideal energy absorber and provides a distinctive advantage over other energy absorbing materials in the market. It has a high crush strength to weight ratio, a linear force curve with a constant load, and it absorbs energy over a long stroke. Cells collapse and buckle on themselves, providing a predictable load that can be modified by the use of various alloys, foil thicknesses, cell sizes, and cell configurations. Aluminium honeycomb is applied in a number of industries, for example the aerospace, automotive, marine etc.

Concept overview The concept includes more efficient and safer evacuation routes, seat systems, luggage systems and table solution. The concept is adapted for various crash scenarios as well as improved comfort for passengers during travelling in a daily basis scenario.

Visual appearance Analysing Dräger and creating a safe-seat design language body

During this project we have been collaborating together with Dräger, a German company that does safety and medical equipment. The idea with this project have been to direct the design language of our chosen design to fit into Drägers product portfolio. I have been struggling with the decision of branding my design (train interior) towards Dräger Safety because today they don’t do any interior designs and do not fit in their portfolio. But because they do Safety equipment and the train is a “Safe train interior concept” the design language of theirs would actually fit. I have mainly worked on branding the seat of the train towards Dräger Safety due to that it reminds most of a “product” and also to be able to not get water over my head while designing a hole train interior.

Leaning position

Neck support

The passenger leans the seat with a rail principle which doesn’t interfere with the passenger behind. The seat has a two point belt that encourages to be more safely seated during the travel.

The seats extended neck support is to avoid whiplashes if crash. The neck supports are for avoiding collisions with other passengers if crash, also for comfort if the passenger wants to rest.

Accas. Luggage & leg space

Removable seat

Under the seat there is an easy accessible luggage, or extra leg space if the passenger will. You can also find a small placement for magazines or brochures above the leg/luggage space.

If crash the seats can be removed from the floor to gain space while evacuating. This enable the carriage to become a pre-hospital and keep the victims away various weather conditions outside.

Table solution In a crash scenario one of the worst injuries are from a table. Energy absorbing aluminium honeycomb structure has proven to reduce the force. The edge of the consists out of rubber.

FORCE

See through to luggage

1. Main luggage

2. Hand luggage

3. Accessible luggage

The main luggage storage are placed by every entrance, which means that there are four in each carriage. In this luggage storage the larger suitcases will be placed in closed hatches. To open and close the storage the hatch are being pulled up and down. This way there are no hatch that will be in the way for the in coming/out going passengers. The hatch is flexible and goes on a rail inside the storage.

The hand luggage are placed in sections above each passenger seat. To improve safety these are also sealed with hatches like in air planes to make sure that no luggage falling down during travel or, in worst case, a crash scenario. The bottom of the hand luggage storage are made in glass to increase spatiality and to make it easier for passengers to easier se and remember to take their hand luggage with them on their way out.

The accessible luggage storage are placed underneath each passenger seat. This is not entire closed due to accessibility and leg space. The advantage with having some of the luggage accessible is that the passenger in question don’t need to be un-belted while getting stuff from the luggage, like he or she would have if getting the luggage from the luggage above.

Table Solution

Luggage system

Improved comfort

In a crash scenario one of the worst injuries are from a table. Energy absorbing aluminium honeycomb structure has proven to reduce the force. The edge of the consists out of rubber.

Consists out of three solutions. The main idea for the luggage system is to keeping the main and hand luggage in enclosed spaces to avoid loose objects falling down and becoming hazards during a crash scenario.

Improved leg space, accessible luggage storage, see through glass to hand luggage, resting and/or privacy side supports and sky windows are features that benefits the passenger and therefore the train manufactures.

Evacuation - Standing train

Evacuation - Train on side

Pre-Hospital Transformation

The floor hatches are being used by removing four seats by the table areas. The seats are attached with bolts and can be removed with help of a tool. The rescue personal can now slide the victims out on the floor.

The hand luggage storage can be used to slide the victims on top of if the train is tilted. To prevent hypothermia and the ceiling hatches are double and you can open the one depending on the position of the train.

By being able to use one or several train carriage as a pre-hospital space, due detachable seats, you provide a windproof and fairly well closed atmosphere for the patients to calm down and heat up.

BACKGROUND Wheelchair parents in Sweden Living with a disability means that due to injury or illness you are having trouble functioning without devices or assistance in your daily life and this have a big impact on the independence of that person. The everyday life for disabled parents with young children are different depending on the type of disability and mobility device. Today there is no alternative to the stroller for the disabled user who use mobility advises. This causes problems when the disabled person on there own have or want to move the child.

CONTEXT

Comfort wheelchair

Environment and different wheelchairs

To be able to understand create a product that can be used in the outdoor environment together with the wheelchairs on the market I did some research in this areas. You can dived the environment in three different categories; The surface, the level differences and the space. To the left you can se some examples of this.

Level differences

Space

There are a lot of different wheelchairs on the marker and different brands. But there are three main categories existing. This are; The comfort wheelchair that are mainly for indoor use, the standard wheelchair that folds together with an X join under the seat. And then there is the active wheelchair that folds together when folding the backrest to the seat. I have been focusing on the standard wheelchair and the active wheelchair when those are the two wheelchairs that my user group are using.

IDEATION Concepts and evaluation The ideation started of by doing fast sketches on different ideas. To the right you can see the four different concept, this were later arranged in different evaluation schedules. To evaluate the different ideas and concept I send the pictures to four different users around in Sweden. We then discussed the ideas over the phone. In the picture to the right you can see one meeting that I was enable to have with Harry about the ideas and in this specific picture he is showing me where he loses the balance by holding an infant. The evaluation resulted in Concept 2 which distributes the child’s weight in a good way for not disturb the wheelchairs features and are still flexible enough. Concept 4 were then also chosen to make the concept more flexible.

Prototype Test and evaluation To be able to evaluate the chosen concept I welded together a prototype of the stroller to be able to try it out together with a users. For this project I also sewn two “children at the age of 4 month and 1,5-2 year to be able to evaluate together with the prototypes. In this slide you can se some pictures from the evaluation together with Annika. The evaluation included the following: -

Steering of the stroller Running up/down of curbs Access to the child Space (size of stroller)

The evaluation gave a very good confirmation of the concept even though there were some smaller issues to develop further.

REFINEMENTS Last decisions and touches

When I finally decided on every technical details I made a miniature of the stroller to se how the concept looks like. I then continued to sketch on the visual appearance of the stroller together with deciding material and colours. During this part a tried to include as many other opinions as possible to make sure that the stroller communicated the features that I had decided on, which were minimalistic, agile and friendly. The natural way for me to continue from there were to do the full size drawings by hand to make sure that everything got the right sizes and proportions. This drawings were later used for the final model.

FINAL RESULT Cursum stroller for wheelchair users

Height & range adjustment

Going over curbs

Connect & disconnect

Cursum stroller gives the user capability to move and steer the wheelchair and stroller at the same time. The user gets free space in the lap and avoid labour on the body. The baby seat can be raised and lowered with help of a gas spring inside the main frame. This enable the user to run the stroller with a good view ahead and in an other moment raise the seat to have physical contact with the baby. To avoid that the user loses the balance when lifting the child in and out of the stroller the seat can also be adjusted in range.

The stroller and wheelchair creates a tandem witch have a breaking point in the middle. This makes it possible to move over smaller curbs by pushing the adjustable handle as a lever. By adjusting the handles length and angle the user can easily have the power grip that fits him or her and in that specific situation.

Cursum stroller can be used separately due two extendible rear wheels that slides down due to rails. This makes it easier for the user to connect and disconnect the stroller. It even makes it possible for a walking partner to use the same stroller. This feature makes it even possible for the user to use the stroller inside by disconnect it and pull the stroller with in the different rooms in their home.
