Hempknowlogy focuses on hempcrete construction techniques that the construction industry can easily integrate with common building practices. We also have a strong interest in 3D-printed house designs printed with near-zero carbon geopolymer mortar. We also design and build environmentally and economically sustainable communities and cities using technology we have discovered over a long process.

Paul “River” Richardson: Building healthy hemp homes

What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why?

After 2 decades and in over 30 countries working in the toxic construction industry, what interests me most about hemp is its ability to create living environments that are at once ultra healthy, and beautiful, good for the earth – and supporting regenerative farming practices. After designing and managing some prestigious projects internationally, beauty was always my main responsibility as an architect and manager. I created and implemented beauty in 5-star luxury projects. Sadly behind the façades of these multi-million dollar projects were unhealthy materials, systems and processes used to build them.

Working with hemp, we see the building materials growing in the fields, whilst nourishing and detoxifying the soil. Hemp is simply processed into healthy biomass that we can use to create these breathing, self-regulating living environments. Hemp has opened a window into a world that re-enables a new dialogue around what it means to dwell in tune and balance with nature, whilst honoring our own needs as stewards on the living soil.

What was a win for your company in the past year?

2021 saw the release of the much anticipated Discovery Channel documentary on our Hemp Cottage project in CA, ‘Building Off the Grid.’ We also launched our Hemp Training program where we have offered workshops in New England, New Mexico, California and Hawaii. We produced the ‘DIY Hex Hemple’, a non-permitted all season simple to build healthy hemp dwelling. Another focus for us has been to build strong relationships with the growers, processors and suppliers of hemp and mineral binder.

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago?

A year ago we were getting hemp building materials for our projects from Europe. We anticipated the burgeoning hemp industry emerging in the United States, and this year we have been pleasantly surprised to be able to source all we needed for our clients locally.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?

Probably the most challenging part delaying the onset of this abundant industry is the processing of the hemp. Farmers can quite easily switch to growing hemp, but without the ability to process, there are limited ways for raw materials to get onto the marketplace.
