ou can hate more but you can never love less. The hope to make the world a better place keeps us all going. In today's competitive world, helping those in management positions is also crucial so they can make better decisions and have clarity in life. With the same vision, Lisa Anna Palmer is helping people in management positions to love their life as a leader. Lisa is the Founder and CEO of Light Your Leadership Inc. Lisa is on a purpose roadmap that outlines how to lead effectively in a changing world. Additionally, she and her team at Light Your Leadership Inc. are growing a platform that shines a light on leaders who put people and the planet first. Thus, we at CIO Business World unleash the full potential of Lisa through an interview to learn about the techniques she uses to bring change. Below are the highlights of the interview: Brief our audience about your journey as an entrepreneur. What inspired you to start your own business? I burned out three times by the age of 38. After spending two decades working within corporate Human Resources & Organizational Development and Organizational Effectiveness roles, both as a management consultant at a Big Six Firm and then within HR roles at two Canadian Crown Corporations, I was inspired to start my own company. As my consulting and coaching practice took off, I realized that I wanted to focus on leadership development because lack of leadership is at the root of every organizational and societal issue. Great leadership is at the heart of every success. Tell us something more about your company and its mission and vision. Our vision is to make the world a better workplace for all by helping those in management positions to learn to love their life as a leader. We do this using the principles featured in my international bestselling book, Light A Fire In Their Hearts: The Truth About Leadership and the SCALE approach, which stands for Self-Awareness, Connection, Accountability, Legacy, and Elevating others. These help managers and executives take their leadership to the next level as they learn tools and techniques to unleash potential and forces for good in themselves and others. In addition, we have the PURPOSE Road Map, which outlines how to lead effectively in a post-pandemic world, including:

12

1. Putting people and the planet first 2. Understanding the struggle 3. Renewing the culture 4. Psychological safety and physical security 5. Office set-up and technology, including AI 6. Service-minded leadership 7. Evolving and elevating leadership capacity at all levels We are also dedicated to growing a platform that shines a light on leaders who put people and the planet first. Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run, and what are your future goals for your company? I envision growing Light Your Leadership Inc. by establishing a Fractional Chief Leadership Officer practice. My goal remains to do my part to ease workplace suffering in as many organizations as possible and make work meaningful and joyful so that people can be, do, and feel their very best. We need to bring back pride in work well done and strive for excellence in healthier ways that bring about good, rather than using methods and approaches that harm people and the environment. I plan to raise awareness of CEOs and Boards so they see the importance of introducing and prioritizing Chief Leadership Officer roles. With over 50% of managers

looking to leave their position (Gallup), 70% of people offered promotions saying “no” (Ivanti), 69% of managers being afraid of speaking to their employees (Harris Poll), and 57% of employees are reporting that they are being disrespected by their manager (Pew Research), we need to focus on leadership development at all levels, all ages, and all backgrounds. Waiting to send managers to a workshop when they get promoted is insufficient. To steer organizations, society, and our economy in the right direction, we need to elevate leadership so that it is integrated as a way of being from the start. Leadership development needs to start early and to be viewed as lifelong learning. I am also working on my second book, Leadership In A Post-Pandemic World, to explore a revolutionized postpandemic workplace and organizational renewal. In the near future, where do you envision yourself, and how do you plan to accelerate and drive forward the process of change? I took stock about two months ago about what differentiates me. I had the realization that prior to launching my own company, I had spent most of my time in corporate settings

THE VP COACH

www.ciobusinessworld.com 13

advising and coaching vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents (i.e., directors and senior directors). I also found that coaching managers and helping them become better versions of themselves led them to realize their deep discontent with their current employers. They then beg me to help them leave their company because they don't have the formal authority to implement change and feel stuck with traditional command and control senior managers. This pained me, so I've decided to focus on coaching vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents (and equivalents) because they have greater authority and access to resources. Therefore, when they transform, they can stay with their current employer and effect real and meaningful changes to their workplace. This benefits their downline and thus helps middle managers in the long run. They are also the CEO feeder group, so when we help them be the best version of

14

themselves, we help the entire organization solidify its future. Outstanding leadership is contagious as elevated leaders become role models for others. Investing in vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents makes workplaces better. Strong, compassionate, courageous, and competent transformational executives know how to grow and inspire other leaders, which creates a powerful ripple effect at all levels. This is the key to delivering results in healthier and more sustainable ways. Leadership development underscores strategic advantage and underpins excellence. Case in point, a Metrix Global study found that executive coaching can have a 788% return on investment (ROI) based on factors including increases in productivity and employee retention (Forbes, 2023).

Coaching top managers to love their life unleashes their human potential. When leaders can connect with people they work with from this elevated place of purpose, passion, and fulfilment, the potential for their organization's success grows exponentially.

As a successful Women leader, how do you manage to strike a balance between your professional commitments and personal life? This is yet another example of lifelong learning because while I strive for balance and have made much progress, I

www.ciobusinessworld.com 15

am still not quite where I would like to be. However, I'd like to invite leaders to reframe this whole concept: rather than try to strike a 50/50 balance between work and personal life, perhaps it would be more effective and less frustrating to harmonize our work and personal life. What I mean by that is that we have different seasons, and life is dynamic, not static. So, rather than strive for balance or a 50/50 split between my work and personal life, I seek to find the right mix that feels good: when life is harmonious, I feel energized, healthier, more aligned, and in flow. I do this by checking in with myself because sometimes I tend to spread myself too thin. I've learned to recognize the signs of burnout earlier; in my case, I get fatigue and joint pain because of fibromyalgia. When I get the first hint, I

16

know it is time to pull back and spread out my appointments to leave more room for self-care and downtime in my calendar. Also, of crucial importance is that I have learned to set boundaries, manage expectations, focus on priorities, to simplify processes, leverage technology and delegate more. In a male-dominated industry, how have you overcome challenges and stereotypes to succeed as a woman entrepreneur? I don't feel that I have overcome it. Rather, it is an ongoing exercise in raising awareness to counteract unconscious biases. As nurturers, women tend to be recognized as solid career and life coaches, human resources managers, and experts in self-leadership or coaches for middle managers. While there have been advances with upcoming

generations, when it comes to being considered as thought leaders or coaches for senior managers, we have yet to break through the glass ceiling, particularly with CEOs and VPs who are Gen-Xers or Boomers. I can see why this happens as mainstream celebrity leadership experts, such as the late Bob Proctor, John C. Maxwell, Patrick Lencioni, Kouzes and Posner, etc., tend to fit the stereotype. Don't get me wrong, I really admire what these men have done to advance organizational leadership, and I am grateful to have studied their work. However, society must recognize that women can also advise and coach top leaders just as well as any man. Both men and women in senior management need to check their biases. Men also need to step up as allies, as everybody wins when more women get involved in leadership development at the highest levels of the organization. What advice would you give to aspiring women entrepreneurs who are looking to make a mark in their respective industries? I suggest they practice the 8 Ps of Ignition that I introduced in the book Light A Fire In Their Hearts. They are Profundity, Passion, Purpose, Perseverance, Professionalism, Play, Philanthropy, and Prosperity. We also need to support one another and not listen when we are told that we need to 'play the game' or 'be mean' to get ahead. This is what keeps us down as a collective. We need to stop playing small and get out of our comfort zones to be seen and to share our platform with others so that we can all get an opportunity to shine. What are your thoughts on the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship and business in the 21st century? Entrepreneurs play an essential part in shaping the landscape and driving its evolution. My hope is that through our businesses and our life's work, we influence socioeconomic forces toward doing what is good for people and the planet. We need to hold ourselves, politicians, and community leaders accountable for driving the economy to grow and realize profits in healthier and more sustainable ways. We have the power to influence consumer behaviours through our advertising, research, speaking, writing and storytelling. Let's help the masses make better choices that will help humanity and all living beings stick around a while longer and strive for a better world for all.

randing is an art, and if combined both, it can truly become a success story. Today, advertising agencies are responsible for creating and implementing marketing and advertising campaigns for clients. A true business leader encourages creativity and fosters an environment where innovative ideas can flourish to stay competitive in the marketing industry.

B

Champagne during my late teens ignited a profound passion that has traversed continents and cultures. This passion has found a vibrant outlet on Instagram, where I engage with fellow enthusiasts and wineries under the moniker @Delicious_Journey_. This platform not only fuels my wine knowledge but also forms connections that enrich my understanding of the art.

Beyond the boardrooms and creative pitches lies the story of one such creative woman, Ingrid Reyes, who has fueled her business knowledge at M&A Creative Agency USA. With a legacy extending to diverse sectors, including, the alcoholic beverage industry, food, technology, finance, telecommunications, and entertainment, Ingrid now oversees the agency's operations, fostering client relationships, and charting growth strategies.

A pivotal chapter began when I met my business partner, Luis Marques, Founder and Global CEO of M&A Creative Agency based in Europe, an exceptional award-winning European ad agency and we decided to join forces to launch a US division. As a female CEO, what strategies have you used to overcome gender-related challenges in your career journey?

This influence brought CIO Business World to interview Ingrid, to know about her journey.

Yet, I've never allowed success to breed complacency. Embracing the spirit of continuous growth, I recently embarked on a transformative journey at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The Entrepreneurship Leadership Initiative Program empowered me with innovation and entrepreneurial skills, vital in navigating the dynamic landscape of advertising. Beyond the boardrooms and creative pitches, my heart beats for the world of wine. A serendipitous encounter with

Embracing the role of a female CEO has been both a privilege and a challenge, and the strategies I've employed to surmount gender-related obstacles have been instrumental in shaping my career journey. Through perseverance, innovation, and unwavering self-belief, I've navigated these challenges with determination. One key strategy has been to cultivate a strong sense of self-confidence. In a landscape where gender biases sometimes linger, I've learned to trust my abilities and insights. By consistently showcasing my expertise and asserting my viewpoints, I've demonstrated that gender does not determine competence.

www.ciobusinessworld.com 21

Connecting with like-minded individuals who champion diversity and equality has provided me with invaluable support and perspective. Engaging with mentors who have encountered similar challenges has armed me with strategies for navigating through complex situations. Furthermore, I've embraced adaptability as a core strength. The business world is ever-evolving, and my willingness to embrace change has allowed me to stay agile in the face of adversity. Flexibility has not only enabled me to overcome gender-related hurdles but has also positioned me as a force for innovation within my organization. Lastly, celebrating my successes and milestones has been a personal strategy to combat imposter syndrome. As a female CEO, it's crucial to recognize and internalize achievements, reinforcing the fact that I belong in the leadership position I hold. In essence, my journey as a female CEO has been about defying limitations, breaking stereotypes, and carving a path that future generations can follow without the same barriers. Through self-assuredness, strategic networking, adaptability, open dialogue, a commitment to diversity, and self-celebration, I've risen above gender-related challenges, embracing my role with pride, and forging ahead toward new horizons. Can you highlight a significant achievement or turning point that played a pivotal role in your career trajectory? I recount a pivotal juncture that carved a new path in my advertising career—a moment that stands as a testament to the fusion of determination, innovation, and seizing opportunities when they arise. The scene was set at a high-stakes new business pitch presentation, I've done a dozens of them, this day the air buzzed with a blend of excitement and tension as I stood before a room filled with global auto industry veterans and decision-makers from Fiat who had just bought Daimler Chrysler. As I stood in the boardroom in the highrise of the Chysler building in Detroit, in a room full of automotive male executives, the tension was palpable. The pitch was for a groundbreaking campaign that we had meticulously crafted, we had worked on it for weeks—a campaign that embodied the spirit of our agency and promised to redefine the way Chrysler engaged with their

22

audience in the middle of a great recession in 2007. As I stepped up to the podium, I felt a surge of confidence. The months of tireless research, brainstorming, and refining the concept were about to culminate in this pivotal presentation. With every slide that I clicked through, I could see the spark of interest in the eyes of the clients, including Fiat's CEO. The narrative flowed seamlessly, capturing their attention and painting a vivid picture of the campaign's potential impact. But it wasn't just the content that spoke volumes; it was the synergy among our team members that resonated. We had united our diverse strengths, perspectives, and skills to create something truly remarkable. The energy in the room was electric, and it was clear that our passion for the project was contagious. The Q&A session that followed was a revelation. The clients' inquiries delved beyond the surface, probing into the heart of our strategy, our creative choices, and our commitment to pushing boundaries. It was during this exchange that I realized the immense power of our collective effort. The campaign wasn't merely a proposal; it was a testament to our ability to innovate and transform ideas into impactful solutions. As the meeting concluded, the applause and accolades that echoed in the room were a validation of our hard work. That moment marked a turning point, a profound realization that our campaign had not only resonated but had ignited a spark of excitement that set it apart. Reflecting back, I understand that the turning point wasn't just about a single pitch—it was the culmination of years of dedication, lessons learned, and an unyielding belief in the power of creativity. It was a testament to the magic that happens when talented individuals collaborate seamlessly, pushing each other to achieve greatness. As I navigate my advertising career that pivotal moment remains etched in my memory. It serves as a constant reminder that embracing challenges, believing in the strength of a united team, and harnessing the force of innovative ideas can shape not only campaigns but also entire trajectories. It's a story of perseverance, creativity, and the realization that seizing a pivotal moment can lead to a legacy of transformation and success. How do you foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within your company?

Fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement isn't just a strategy—it's a way of life. At M&A Creative, we've woven these principles into the very fabric of our operations, igniting a creative spark that fuels our every endeavor. It all starts with a mindset—a shared belief that complacency has no place in an industry as dynamic as advertising. We encourage our team to embrace change, to challenge conventions, and to see every project as an opportunity for growth. It's about cultivating a hunger for progress that propels us forward. Transparency plays a pivotal role. We've dismantled the traditional hierarchy, creating an environment where ideas flow freely, regardless of one's title. From interns to senior executives, everyone's voice matters. This inclusivity not only fosters creativity but also empowers our team to take ownership of their contributions. Innovation isn't confined to brainstorming sessions; it's woven into our daily operations. We allocate time for dedicated exploration—moments when team members can pursue passion projects or delve into emerging trends. These initiatives are the seeds of innovation, often sprouting into groundbreaking campaigns that push the boundaries of creativity. Learning is a cornerstone of our culture. We're committed to staying ahead of the curve, whether it's adopting cuttingedge technologies or understanding the pulse of consumer behavior. Regular workshops, training sessions, and industry conferences are part of our routine. By staying informed, we arm ourselves with the tools needed to create campaigns that resonate. Our agency isn't just a workplace—it's a dynamic ecosystem where innovation thrives. The culture of continuous improvement isn't imposed from above; it's embraced collectively. As I reflect on our journey, I realize that fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement isn't a destination; it's an ongoing expedition. It's about empowering our team to think beyond boundaries, to challenge norms, and to embrace every project as an opportunity to innovate. It's a commitment to staying agile, staying curious, and always pushing the envelope of creativity.

Can you share an example of a difficult decision you had to make and the factors you considered before making it? Before the world of advertising, I had another career—in the realm of Interior Design, a childhood dream. I devoted six years to this realm, weaving together luxury and creativity with clients like The Four Seasons Santa Barbara and St. Regis Princeville, Hawaii, even Hollywood's luminaries. Yet, amid all the success, a whisper of something unfulfilled lingered, an unfulfillment I couldn't fill. The yearning for the corporate world emerged, and a profound decision loomed. To start anew in advertising, a domain unfamiliar, it would bear its cost—beginning from ground-zero once more, starting a new career. Amidst the scales of career continuity and personal happiness, interior design fell short, and so a leaped into the enigmatic landscape of advertising which had been calling me. Once I made that decision, I never looked back, a new career unveiled, I went from working in boutique agencies to global giants, each step added layers of knowledge and mastery. A journey from supervisor to director, VP to EVP, culminating in Director of North America and the Caribbean for Mindshare in New York, which is part of the formidable WPP conglomerate of global agencies and at that time #1 worldwide. Leading at the helm of renowned brands such as American Express, Kimberly Clark, and Sprint, and successfully leading diverse teams spanning North America and the Caribbean. Then, a return to Los Angeles marked a pivotal turn. The birth of my marketing and communications consulting venture, a space that incubated growth. Yet, destiny had another script in mind. An encounter with Luis Marques, the visionary behind M&A Creative Agency, rewrote the tale. In our partnership, I found my stride, a home for my expertise as the CEO for North and South America. The trajectory bends in unforeseen ways, and as I reflect, it's evident that the heart always knows its path. From a childhood dream to scaling the summits of design and advertising, the journey continues with new stories to unfold.

Navigating the Intersection of Emerging Technologies, Revolutions, and Crises in BUSINESS AND EDUCATION 24

I

n today's fast-paced and ever-evolving world, the intersection of emerging technologies, social revolutions, and unexpected crises is redefining the landscape of both business and education. As an entrepreneur, musician, and educator, I've witnessed the transformative power of these dynamics firsthand. In this article, I will share my thoughts on how individuals and institutions can navigate and harness these forces for positive change.

quo. The rise of social media has empowered individuals to mobilize and advocate for change on a global scale. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and climate activism have forced society to confront issues of systemic inequality, discrimination, and environmental sustainability.

Technology as the Catalyst

Companies are now expected to take a stance on social and environmental issues, and consumers increasingly support businesses aligned with their values. This shift underscores the importance of purpose-driven entrepreneurship and the need for businesses to contribute positively to society.

Emerging technologies have always been at the forefront of driving innovation and change. From the advent of the internet to the proliferation of smartphones, technology has altered the way we communicate, work, and learn. The current era is witnessing a wave of groundbreaking technologies, such as virtual reality, AI and blockchain, that have the potential to disrupt and enhance various industries. In business, these technologies offer unparalleled opportunities for growth and efficiency. For example, AI-driven analytics can provide valuable insights into customer behavior and market trends, enabling companies to make data-driven decisions. Virtual reality can revolutionize employee training and customer engagement by creating immersive experiences. However, adapting to these technologies requires a willingness to embrace change and invest in education and skill development. Businesses that prioritize digital literacy and innovation will be better positioned to thrive in the tech-driven future. In education, technology is transforming the way we learn and teach. Online platforms and e-learning tools have become essential in providing accessible education. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this digital shift, highlighting the importance of flexible and adaptable learning models. Students and educators have had to adapt to virtual classrooms and remote collaboration, and this experience will likely shape the future of education. Revolutions and Social Movements Simultaneously, we are living in an era of social revolutions and movements that challenge the status

In business, these social movements have pushed for corporate social responsibility and ethical practices.

In education, social revolutions call for a more inclusive and equitable system. Access to quality education remains a global challenge, and educators must address disparities in learning opportunities. Social justice movements demand diverse and inclusive curricula that reflect the experiences and contributions of marginalized communities. It is essential to empower students with the knowledge and skills to be informed, responsible global citizens. Crisis Management and Resilience While technology and social revolutions offer immense potential, we cannot overlook the role of crises in shaping our world. Whether it's a global pandemic, economic recession, or environmental disaster, unforeseen crises can disrupt businesses and education systems. The COVID-19 pandemic is a recent example of how a crisis can impact both sectors. Businesses had to adapt to remote work and changing consumer behavior, while schools and universities had to transition to online learning. The ability to respond swiftly and with resilience became a key differentiator. In business, crisis management and contingency planning are essential. Companies must be prepared to pivot their strategies and operations in response to unforeseen challenges. Flexibility, adaptability, and a www.ciobusinessworld.com 24

focus on employee and customer well-being are crucial during times of crisis. In education, the pandemic highlighted the need for robust digital infrastructure and preparedness. Institutions must invest in technology and training to ensure continuity of learning in challenging circumstances. Moreover, crises have shed light on the importance of mental health and well-being in education. Students and educators alike need support systems to navigate the emotional toll of uncertainty and disruption. Navigating the Intersection To thrive in the ever-evolving intersection of technology, social revolutions, and crises, individuals and institutions should consider the following strategies: **Embrace Lifelong Learning**: In both business and education, the ability to adapt and learn continuously is paramount. Stay curious and open to new ideas, technologies, and perspectives. **Foster Innovation**: Encourage creativity and innovation within your organization or classroom. Embrace new technologies and methodologies that can enhance productivity and engagement. **Prioritize Inclusivity**: Ensure that your business or educational institution is inclusive and equitable. Embrace diversity and consider the needs of all stakeholders. **Prepare for Change**: Develop contingency plans and strategies for crisis management. The ability to pivot and adapt in challenging times can make the difference between survival and stagnation. **Stay Informed**: Keep abreast of emerging technologies and trends in your industry. Stay informed about social issues and be prepared to engage in constructive dialogue.

26

**Promote Well-being**: Prioritize the physical and mental well-being of employees, students, and yourself. Resilience in the face of crises begins with individual and collective well-being. **Seek Collaboration**: Engage with your community, industry peers, and educational networks. Collaborative efforts can lead to innovative solutions and shared resources. The intersection of emerging technologies, social revolutions, and crises may present challenges, but it also offers boundless opportunities for growth and positive change. As we navigate this complex landscape, let us remain adaptable, compassionate, and committed to building a brighter future for business and education. Together, we can harness these forces to drive innovation, equity, and resilience.

This experience helped her realize how diverse people viewed women workforce, worked with, and dealt with them. Sonica was heading the HR function for Philips Consumer Lifestyle business in 2012, when she decided to take a break from the corporate world and founded Marching Sheep in February 2013, with an intention to rollout interventions that truly made a difference to organisations and people's lives and careers and drive respect and equality for all. A mother of two, Sonica considers Marching Sheep her third child, and is extremely passionate about what they deliver as a team. The values at Marching Sheep are Integrity in everything they do, Client orientation, Responsiveness, Attention to detail. Her constant reminder to the team is that when she was on the other side of the table, she was always worried about the impact of interventions. there are stringent measures on outcomes and deliverables. It was a bumpy ride to reach where the firm is today. While Sonica understood her craft well, which was HR, she knew little about running her own business. From understanding the different taxes to legal obligations of running a business, to getting her first client, to learning how to market Marching Sheep, making the first website, to attracting the right talent despite being bootstrapped. There were many obstacles along the way, from demonetization, or implementation of new tax regime and company laws, and more recently Covid pandemic, which did see drying up of revenues for short spells. But it never dampened the fire in her belly or the steam in her team, driven by the passion of truly making a difference on ground. Sonica faced a spectrum of challenges, from breaking gender stereotypes to stepping into leadership roles in diverse locations. She overcame these challenges with determination, leveraging her experiences to create a dynamic and inclusive work environment at Marching Sheep. These challenges have not only shaped her as a business leader but have also contributed to the values and ethos that define her firm today. We follow strategies that keep us motivated and help us work well together. I let my team members take charge of their own tasks. This helps them make good decisions and feel responsible. We talk a lot, and I'm always available to listen. We also learn new things all the time to stay up-to-date. Saying "thank you" and giving helpful advice is important. This helps us grow and do better. We also work as a team, sharing ideas and coming up with new ones. We set clear goals and make sure everyone knows what to do. We also take care of our work-life balance to stay motivated and not get too tired. Celebrating small and big wins keeps us excited about our work.
