His stint at Goldman proved to be a valuable learning experience, surrounded by exceptionally intelligent individuals. Subsequently, Alec pursued higher education at Harvard Business School, followed by five impactful years at McKinsey. There, he contributed his expertise to the banking and energy sectors and played a pivotal role in initiating the firm's Board Governance practice. During his tenure at McKinsey, Alec, in collaboration with a friend from the TV industry, ventured into entrepreneurship, founding the world's first e-learning company. After successfully navigating the entrepreneurial landscape, Alec transitioned to Idealab, a prominent tech incubator near CalTech, where he assumed leadership of an autonomous navigation company for robots. The company's eventual acquisition by iRobot solidified Alec's mark in the tech industry, with the technology finding applications in vacuum cleaners and military systems. Harnessing the visual pattern recognition algorithm developed for autonomous navigation, Alec steered the creation of a groundbreaking retail scanner. This innovation, capable of recognizing package goods without reading barcodes, gained significant traction in US grocers. he global climate crisis continues to be a high priority in every nation. For this reason, environmental initiatives and solutions in any sector are being prioritized. Concurrently, in public relations (PR), the term “Green PR” is gradually becoming popular and drawing interest from the press, PR experts, and businesses. Green PR highlights and concentrates on sustainability efforts that a company is striving to implement. This article will provide a more specific introduction to Green PR and outline how businesses can apply Green PR to become a sustainable brand.

18

Definition and importance of Green PR Green PR is a subset of the public relations field. This term originates from the “green movement”, a worldwide social movement that aims to preserve the environment and reduce negative human impacts on the environment, such as climate change and environmental pollution. Typically, businesses implement Green PR to demonstrate their social responsibility by undertaking ecological protection initiatives, helping the company improve its reputation and raise brand awareness.

In Vietnam, the economic transition towards greening has become more evident through the specific rules set by the government to concretize the overall sustainable development policy and sustainable consumption in particular. However, most businesses in Vietnam are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and these enterprises still need to work on resource constraints as more sustainable business models. As a result, most SMEs in Vietnam are still in the stage of considering and have yet to take the initial step towards implementing sustainable development activities and green growth. Instead, most forward-thinking companies devoted to green development and production are export-focused, publicly traded, and FDI firms. For several reasons, it is possible to convince a business to prioritize implementing Green PR initiatives. Nonetheless, the primary reasons are as follows: Ÿ

Increasing brand recognition: Businesses can make a positive impression on their clients by implementing environmental protection initiatives. 62% of Vietnamese consumers base their decisions about what to buy and how to use products and services on a business's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Ÿ

Meeting consumer expectations: Vietnamese consumers are becoming more concerned about “green” and “clean” factors when up to 86% are willing to pay extra for goods and services from companies with a positive social and environmental impact. The public is becoming more sensitive and attentive to environmental issues. Consequently, by prioritizing Green PR initiatives, businesses can meet the needs and expectations of their customers regarding their products and services.

Ÿ

Strict policies and regulations for environmental protection: Globally, governments are pressing companies to assume greater accountability for their supply chains and business operations. In addition, the Vietnamese government has also approved strategies and plans to establish goals such as cutting greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging clean and renewable energy, greening production, and encouraging sustainable lifestyles.

How should Vietnamese businesses implement Green PR to become a sustainable brand? When embarking on environmental initiatives, businesses must avoid “greenwashing” - a term denoting companies

20

attempting to portray a positive image regarding ecological protection without a genuine commitment to executing these initiatives. Therefore, it may be deemed an instance of “greenwashing” if environmental protection campaigns are purely commercial and do not accurately represent reality. Instead, businesses should present initiatives and commitments that hold genuine significance and take concrete actions towards the environment. The Vietnamese cosmetics brand Cocoon is an eloquent example of this case. Protecting the environment and ecosystems has been a priority for Cocoon since its founding. This plant-based cosmetics company regularly starts meaningful projects and campaigns to inspire people to protect ecosystems and the environment. A few examples are using fabric bags instead of plastic ones, urging consumers to plant succulents in their old bottles, and providing product exchanges for empty bottle returns. Additionally, Cocoon has been certified as cruelty-free by PETA, an animal rights organization, and has been endorsed by Leaping Bunny, a commitment program against animal testing. The future of Green PR in Vietnam In the face of increasing environmental and societal issues, establishing a responsible and sustainable brand image become more crucial than ever. Green PR has the potential to grow in significance and popularity in public relations and communications, both globally and in Vietnam. The statistics indicate that Vietnamese customers highly value environmental conservation efforts made by businesses. To sum up, Green PR is not only a passing trend but also a sustainable and significant direction for the future. Companies that successfully use Green PR improve their brand recognition, protect the environment, and generate long-term economic benefits. This article is written by Eloise Nguyen at EloQ Communications. Eloise is a PR and Communications Executive at EloQ and is responsible for localizing and creating contents for clients. Master the Pivot to Thrive in the Age of Uncertainty

Five Lessons and Five Actions for Leaders

32

The 10 Most Dynamic Business Leaders Leading the Way to Success, 2023

W

hether your company is a global powerhouse or a local shop, your supply chain is breaking, whether you are aware of it or not.

Supply chains are the movement of information, goods, and funds that drive your business. From raw materials to the front door, there are countless links in the supply chain, and some break every day. Most of these breaks are fixed quickly by your supply chain team, and business continues. Other breaks, however, can hobble your company. These are the areas where leaders need to focus their time and attention. Top concerns include rising geopolitical tensions, the digital explosion, and chronic labor shortages. Rising Geopolitical Tensions Globalization took off in the 1990s as companies sourced, manufactured, stored, and delivered products in the most cost-efficient way. With a few exceptions, any country could be part of its supply chain, reducing poverty and inequality around the world while lowering costs for consumers. According to the American Enterprise Institute, Toasters were 12 times more costly in 1949 than today. Over the last decade, globalization slowed, and the COVID19 pandemic ushered in the current period of deglobalization as governments began to put their thumbs on the economic scale to regain more control over supply chains. Examples include the CHIPS Act and the Inflation Reduction Act in the U.S., the Green Deal Industrial Plan in the EU, the K-Chips Act in Korea, and the subsidization of strategic industries in China.

Balancing government aid and national security with economic realities is not an exact science. How do you predict if and when China cuts off trade routes in the Taiwan Strait? This is the Age of Uncertainty. The Digital Explosion While eCommerce growth has slowed from the blistering pandemic pace, it's still reshaping retail. Generative AI, machine learning, advanced robotics, and other new connecting and thinking technologies are changing what's possible. Investing in these technologies seems like a simple plan. It isn't. Many of these technologies are still in their infancy and the question becomes not only what to invest in, but how to fund it. Decision-making tools are typically built to achieve known outcomes. Investments with uncertain outcomes require a different mindset. This is the Age of Uncertainty. Chronic Labor Shortages The U.S. is about 3 million workers short of the prepandemic trend as baby boomers retire, birth rates plummet, and the economy remains strong. These trends have been plaguing other countries as well. The United Nations expects the populations of Japan and Italy, for example, to decline by more than 10%. It's also not just a question of the number of employees. Do they have the skills needed for the digital economy? More importantly, how do you attract and hold onto employees? As a leader, how do you balance the rising employee power with technology investments that allow you to do more with less? This is the Age of Uncertainty. Mastering the Pivot Thriving in the Age of Uncertainty requires leaders to master the pivot, creating options that allow the organization to pivot towards opportunity and away from danger. Options could include upskilling your workforce, new digital investments, reconfiguring your supply chain, or developing new revenue streams, to name a few. Pivoting isn't about sharpening the knife, it's about creating new knives and requires a different mindset, from planning and acting to sensing and responding. Most organizations are not prepared for this change. Here are five lessons and five actions to get started.

www.ciobusinessworld.com 33

Five Lessons and Five Actions for Leaders 1. Nurture a culture that embraces experimentation. This cannot be a grassroots initiative; it must start at the top and permeate through the organization. When leaders step out of their comfort zone to invest in an option with an uncertain outcome that doesn't pan out, your response will make all the difference. One of the best responses I've heard is, “We've paid the tuition, now what did we learn?” 2. Eliminate hidden sources of friction. The sources of friction holding back your growth are often hidden in plain sight, such as goals and measures not aligned, focus on process versus outcomes, and employees not having ready access to the information they need. 3. From chess master to gardener. To move at the speed of change, the leader's job is not to direct every move, but to nurture an environment that trains and enables their employees to take ownership. A key part of this is pushing decision-making to the lowest practical level. 4. Learning fast, not failing fast. “Failing Fast” is a slogan, not a strategy. Failing fast is, well, failing. When experiments don't work out as planned, they are only failures if the firm didn't learn something that propels them forward. Creating an organization with a continuous learning mindset allows a firm to control its destiny. 5. Be humble. Senior executives rose to their current positions because they made a lot of correct decisions. However, as the boundaries of what's possible continue to change, their past success could be their downfall. Being humble, and allowing new ideas to flourish, is the new critical characteristic of successful leaders.

the lower spending authority will inevitably have to go through a series of committees to get approval for funding, often watering down the original request along the way. This not only slows innovation, but accountability becomes distributed. 2. Ask an employee two levels below you if they have ready access to decision-making data Most executives will say their firm is data-driven. Most are wrong. When you get middle management and below, you'll often find that the data they need to do their work is siloed and permission-based. 3. Consider new decision metrics for innovative technology investments. Traditional decision metrics for projects such as Net Present Value, Payback Period, and Return on Investment require a confident prediction of cashflows in the future. Investment in options requires firms to focus on learning objectives. 4. Review one “failed” project over the last year and understand how the information learned propelled the organization forward What happened to the leader of that project. Was the project a “career limiting move” or did the organization embrace the learning and move forward. 5. Test the trust level among your immediate staff – ask a question that will likely generate disparate responses – do they engage? Creating options requires high levels of organizational trust. Leaders must feel free to propose ideas that might challenge the status quo. If you ask the controversial question and all eyes turn to you before anyone responds, you have your answer. Ideas unexpressed become corporate cancer, eating away at the individual and depriving the firm of the very thing that can allow it to thrive in disruption. Turn Uncertainty into Your Advantage

Five Learning Actions to Take Now 1. Evaluate spending authority increases. Spending authority is a common source of friction in organizations. Consider two VPs in the same size organization, in the same industry, with the same responsibility. One has spending authority up to $50,000, the other $5 million. Why is that important? The VP with

The Age of Uncertainty is upon us, but you can create options that allow you to turn uncertainty into your advantage. It requires a different mindset.
