5.Researchandfindout
UsingAIandcomputationalbiologyto findnewdrugsandmakethembetter couldmakeahugedifferenceinhow productivepeopleare.Inturn,thiswill makeresearchanddiscoveryless expensive,faster,andbetter.Itwillcut downonthenumberofdrugsthat don’tworkbyfindingpatternsinalot ofdata.Itwillalsoimprovetarget identification,safetyandeffectiveness assessments,andmodelingthat predictswhatwillhappenand“testing inthecomputer.”
OneimportantthingthatAItoolsare finallychangingispredictinghow moleculeswillinteractwitheachother Thishelpsusfigureouthowdiseases work.Inturn,thesemechanismscould helpfindnewbiomarkers,find,design, validate,andoptimizenewdrug candidates,andfindexistingdrugsthat couldbeusedforotherpurposes.
CombiningAIwithothertechnologies likeorgan-on-a-chip,3Dcellcultures, andothercellmodelsthatmimic humanbiologyin-vitrocouldreduce theneedtotestonanimalsandcould eventuallyleadtotheendofPhase1
clinicaltrialsinhealthyvolunteers.
Atthemoment,over148start-up companiesandover33large biopharmacompaniesareusingAIto researchandfindnewdrugs.Theydo thisthroughpartnershipsorontheir own.

6.Clinicaldevelopment
Clinicaltrialsarereadyforchange becausetheyaretakinglonger,cost more,andhavealotofmanualsteps. Also,alotoftrialsareneverfinished. ClinicalTrials.govwasusedtoregister morethan30,000clinicaltrialsin 2018.Sincetheyear2000,nearly 300,000trialshavebeenregistered. Butlessthan5,000trialsreportedtheir resultsin2018,andsince2000,less than35,000registeredstudieshave reportedtheirresultsAItoolsare finallychanging.
Biopharmacompaniesarecurrently lookingintohowtheycanuseAI technologytoimprovetheirclinical trials.Thisincludesimprovingtrial designandpatientrecruitment, analyzingbothtrialresultsand evidencefromtherealworld,and automatingthepublicationofresultsto makeitfasterandmoreefficient.Ifthe implementationgoeswell, developmentcostscouldgodown, peoplewouldbemorelikelytofollow therules,andtheresultswouldbe better&AItoolsarefinallychanging.
Also,havingaccesstolargeamounts ofdataandAI-poweredanalyticscould leadtothecreationofhighlyeffective personalizedtherapieswithouttheneed forlarge-scaleclinicaltrials.
Biopharmamanufacturingandsupply chainscreatealotofreal-timedatathat hasn’tbeenusedinausefulwayfor manyyears.ButAItoolsarefinally changingtechnologiesthatcould changetheseprocessesbyprocessing andmakingdecisionsaboutdatainreal time.Thiscouldmakesupplychains trulydata-driven.Thepotentialfor end-to-endvisibilityinmanufacturing andsupplychainswillhelpbiopharma companiesimprovetheirsupplychain planning,inventorymanagement, demandforecasting,logistics optimization,workforceplanning,and purchasing.

Thebusinessworldislikelytomove awayfromlinearsupplychainsand towarddigitalsupplynetworksthatare open,flexible,andlinked(DSNs).
