OF THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES

ThePalaceofVersailles,alsoknownasChâteaude VersaillesinFrenchwasonceahuntinglodge.KingLouis XIIIbuiltthelodgeinthe17thcentury.Buthisson,Louis XIV,hassomeothervisionfortheland.Hewantedto createapalacethatwouldshowcasehispowerand grandeur.Hence,hestartedtransformingthelodgeintothe magnificentpalaceweknowoftoday.

LouisXIV,theSunKing, hiredthebestarchitectsand artiststoturnthehuntinglodgeintoasymbolofabsolute monarchy Thepalacewasdeclaredanofficialroyal residencein1682.Thepalacegrewandexpandedoverthe years,withnewfountains,gardens,androomsbeingadded. However,itwasabandonedin1715afterthedeathofLouis XIV.

Duringhisreign,Versaillesbecamenotonlyaresidencebut alsoacenterofpoliticalandculturalsignificance.Itwas herethatthekingheldcourtandmadeimportantdecisions. Thepalacebecameahubofartisticexpression,attracting painters,sculptors,andmusicianswhowantedtobeapart oftheSunKing'sgrandvision.

In1722,itreturnedtoitsroyalstatus.More additionsweremadetothepalaceduringthe reignof LouisXVandLouisXVI.But LouisPhillipewastheonewhomadegreat changes,partlywiththehelpofpatronsin theUnitedStates.ThePalaceofVersailles symbolizedthemightandauthorityofthe Frenchmonarchy.Itsinteriors,grandhalls, andstunninggardensleftvisitorsinawe.It wasaplacewherethekingcouldshowcase hispowerandimpressforeigndignitaries.
