THE CORTLAND STORY YESTERDAY AND TODAY

ONE OF THE MOST STORIED NAMES IN FLY FISHING WRITES A NEW CHAPTER. Close your eyes and you can reminisce where Cortland has been. Open them and you’ll see where we’re going – you’ll also catch more fish.

Technically speaking, the eye detects light and converts it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. Fortunately, light can often take the form of a brookie smashing the surface for a quickly passing meal. Or a steelhead skirting its way upriver. When Ray Smith set out to make the world’s finest fly lines in 1915, it was these kinds of visions which led him to a spot along the banks of some crystal-clear trout streams in Cortland, New York.

While much has changed since 1915 – PVC, nylon, Leon Chandler worked for Cortland for over 50 years, and served as head of our marketing department for most of that time. He retired in 1992.

Dacron® and countless other modern materials have replaced silk and linen – the streams around the Cortland facility

still hold fish, and we still frequent those waters before and after work or during lunch breaks. We remain a company devoted to making fishing the best possible experience it can be. And, like you, we understand a lot of that experience is dictated by how

well your line performs.

Cortland’s 333® changed the way fly line was made when it was introduced in 1953. Unlike earlier lines that relied on hard enamel (which wreacked havoc on snake guides) or linseed oil (we called it “Therm-Oil”), the 333 had a durable, flexible and completely waterproof coating made from polyvinyl chloride – creating the industry’s first unsinkable fly line.

Cortland also offered a full array of fly fishing gear, including rods and reels. These mid-century fly reels were considered state-of-the-art at the time. The reel on the far right is one of the industry’s first multiplying reels.

Our “Fishing Forecaster” was a popular publication because it was packed with fishing tips and advice, along with predictions about the best days and times to catch fish.

CORTLAND TODAY: Today, Cortland manufactures the finest fly lines, braided lines and monofilament in the world. When making fly line, we control the quality from start to finish, from braiding our own cores (and we’re the only fly line company that does), to extruding tapers designed like no other. We’ve developed cutting-edge new coatings, like the new PST,™

proprietary top coats and various additives that result in fly line performance that will exceed your expectations. Every Cortland fly line is engineered to surpass the need for any fishing challenge – whether the quarry is trout or tarpon, bass or bones, tuna or sailfish. We are constantly refining our lines because, truth be told, we are constantly looking for ways to catch more fish.

CORTLAND – A LOOK AHEAD: Cortland is well positioned to launch another century of leadership in fly line innovation. We are aggressively The 444 SL was the industry’s first slick-shooting floating fly line. Introduced in 1979, the “green line” quickly became the go-to line for expert fly casters. It’s made with a proprietary process and top coat that add stiffness and a hard finish to the line, and 35 years later will still outshoot many of the fly lines sold today. ®

THE PART OF YOUR BRAIN THAT PROCESSES THE DETAILED INFORMATION CONCERNING FLY LINE TAPERS IS IRONICALLY CLOSE TO THE REGION THAT ANALYZES VACATION SCHEDULES.

While there has not been any official mapping of the angling brain, logic guides us to some definitive conclusions. Regions that previously might have stored the names of distant relatives become devoted to all things fishy instead. One has to prioritize. And as Cortland continues to advance the technology of fly lines further than anyone ever imagined, it takes a bit to get your head around it all. These pages will guide you:

MADE IN THE USA. AS IT SHOULD BE. We’ve been manufacturing premium-performance fishing line in the USA for almost 100 years (99 to be exact) – which is twice as long as any other line manufacturer. Our first lines were braided from pure silk

CORTLAND TECHNOLOGY

and treated with linseed oil to protect the finish and help them float. That was seriously high tech back then – and a real improvement over horsehair. When WW II broke out, we switched to braiding parachute cord and other products for the war effort, and resumed line manufacturing when the war ended. But, the war brought us two exciting new synthetic fibers: nylon and Dacron,® which we started braiding for a variety of new products. In 1952, we ran a braided nylon fly line through a vat of PVC, and the first modern fly line emerged. Since then we’ve been innovating, experimenting and manufacturing fly line right here in Cortland, New York – for 99 years – going on a hundred!

7 QUALITY CONTROL: Every great fly line starts with a solid foundation, which is why we braid our own fly line cores. It takes a uniform, tight, round weave to resist ovalling and twist, the twin gremlins that cause fly line to coil and pigtail. CORTLAND TECHNOLOGIES DUAL AND SINGLE WELDED LOOPS All of our Pro Shop fly lines come with welded loops to make rigging fast, easy and reliable. We take extra care to make certain our loops are strong, secure and as small as it’s practical to make them.

DYNA-TIP ™ Our proprietary Dyna-Tip™ technology significantly reduces the density of our fly line tips so they float higher in the surface film to eliminate the dreaded sinking tip that plagues other fly lines. A tip that floats high-and-dry gives you better control of your leader and fly, provides a visual indicator for easier strike detection, and creates less surface disturbance when lifted off the water for another cast. Did you ever think the first few feet of your fly line would make such a difference?

IT’S ALL IN THE BRAIDING With 99 years of braiding experience, we know a thing or two about how to

NEW! PST ™

braid a fly line core. Interestingly, none

Our new Precision SL series fly lines all feature PST (Precision Shooting Technology), an exciting new coating which employs proprietary new technologies to produce a harder finish and noticeably stiffer coating that shoots through the guides like no fly line you’ve cast before. Unlike softer lines that require silicone additives (that slowly wash away) to add lubricity, new PST™ coatings deliver reduced-friction performance all day long. The lines are also virtually memory-free, even in cold weather, so your running line handles predictably and resists tangling.

buy theirs from other braiders. You can braid a core fast or slow (fast is cheaper) with a tight weave or loose (tight is more expensive) and with a uniform pick count (wraps per inch) or not – and someone who is not a fanatic about braiding won’t know the difference. We do, and the quality of our fly lines reflect this – every time you cast them.

TECHNOLOGY

PE+ ( CORE

COATING

FUSION TECHNOLOGY)

A glimpse into the future of saltwater fly lines, our Liquid Crystal™ lines are extruded with a blend of polyethylene compounds (PE+) over a monofilament core resulting in the toughest, slickest-shooting floating fly lines that have ever flown over the flats. The exceptionally hard, glass-smooth finish of the PE+ coating defies friction in even the most torrid heat, and the memory-free formulation resists tangling on the deck – or in the guides. The core and PE+ are permanently fused to prevent delaminating.

BIG FLY | 2' Dyna-Tip

(100')

Just as some fish are bigger than others, some flies are bigger too. And when it gets right down to it, sending one of those big fuzzy flies sailing across the sky is half the fun. A feat that’s humanly possible thanks to the aggressive front-taper and over-weighted head on our new Big Fly line. It loads quickly and throws big streamers, bass flies, and tandem rigs with minimal false casting. The lowfriction, PST™ coating shoots smoothly through the guides, and the stiff, low-memory running line resists tangling. The 2-foot Dyna-Tip™ keeps the line high and dry, and welded loops at both ends makes rigging quick and easy. All the things you need to go after the big boys.

SALMON/STEELHEAD | 2' Dyna-Tip

(90')

Fly fishing for salmon and steelhead requires specialized, finely tuned tackle. Naturally our new Precision® SL Salmon/Steelhead lines are designed for specialized performance. Combining a classic long-belly, weight-forward salmon taper with our new, specially formulated PST™ coating to improve both overhead casting distance and line control, it’s a salmon-and-steelhead-specific work of art. The long belly manages large indicators and skating flies with ease, and facilitates precise line mending for “greased line” presentations. With both front and rear welded loops, changing lines and leaders while out on the water is a snap. Finally, our proprietary high-floating Dyna-Tip™ keeps the line high and dry when fishing bombers, skaters and hitched wet flies.

Science tells us the heart is a hollow muscle that pumps blood through the vessels. Literature tells us it’s the center of our emotions. But angling tells us it’s the part that is most acutely aware of a fish at the end of your line. And more often than not, when that connection is realized, the electrical charge is being carried along a Cortland® Precision® fly line. With a game-changing selection of lines featuring proprietary coatings and custom tapers, Cortland sets the angler’s heart racing.

There are times when a fly must get down to the bottom to bring up the biggest trout – and our Precision® 10' Sink-Tip Type 6 will cut through the swiftest current to reach the feeding level of the fish. Ideal for fishing streamers, nymphs and other sinking flies in deeper water and faster currents, the supple, super-smooth finish of the floating section contains special additives to increase its lubricity so it shoots faster and farther than other sinking tip lines. PRECISION QUICK DESCENT ™ Precision® Quick Descent™ lines are the perfect choice for getting down deep – and fast. Unlike shooting heads that “hinge” instantly and are prone to tangling, the Quick Descent lines feature a beefy, elongated rear taper to provide a smooth transition from a fast-sinking head to a well-mannered running line for less kick when they turn over – and easier handling on the retrieve. Available with either 15-foot or 24-foot tips that sink 8 inches per second, they are offered in a choice of color-coded grain weights to quickly and easily load 5- through 10-weight rods.

Our Precision® Clear Intermediate line is designed to sink slowly below the surface of the water, where it virtually disappears. Made with a supple, crystal-clear intermediate coating over a clear monofilament core, it sinks at a 1.25" to 1.75" per second rate for the most stealthy presentations to shallow, stillwater trout. Dual welded loops makes rigging easy, and the all-temperature coating remains flexible in the coldest water.

INTERMEDIATE | Sink Rate: 1.25 - 1.75 IPS

| (90')

In their bag of tricks, many savvy stillwater anglers prefer our 444® Classic intermediate fly line to a floating line when fishing dry flies or emergers in the film during windy conditions. They like the way the thin diameter line slices through the wind and settles just below the surface waves to maintain a straight-line connection with the fly. Of course, with a precise specific gravity of 1.06, our neutral-density 444 Classic Intermediate is only a tad heavier than water and it sinks ever-soslowly. We originally designed it for fishing swimming nymphs and emergers over shallow, submerged weed beds, but we don’t have a problem with trying something different. SIZES: WF 3-8

LIQUID CRYSTAL FLOATING LINES

LIQUID CRYSTAL ™ Cortland’s tournament-winning Liquid Crystal™ floating fly lines represent a glimpse into the future of floating fly-line technology. Made by extruding a proprietary blend of clear polyethylene and advanced co-polymers over a monofilament core, the Liquid Crystal is virtually invisible in the water. The hard PE+ coating has a super-smooth finish with an exceptionally low coefficient of friction so it shoots faster and farther than any conventional PVC floating fly line ever made. The coating is permanently fused to the monofilament core so there is no line stretch for unequalled strike detection and instantaneous hook sets. Highly abrasion resistant and durable, Liquid Crystal comes in a flats taper for bonefish and permit (WF 6 - 9 F), and a tarpon taper (WF 10 - 12 F), each uniquely profiled for quick shots and accurate presentations with a minimum of false casting. Dual welded loops make changing rigs fast and easy.

SKY BLUE LIQUID CRYSTAL

You don’t always need a completely invisible line, and some anglers (and their guides) prefer a line that’s easy to see. Visibility helps with loop control when casting and makes it easier to locate your fly when it’s underwater. The new Sky Blue Liquid Crystal™ is made with the same polyethylene coating, but it is extruded over a blue-tinted monofilamant core. The line fades from stronger blue color in the center to a light blue tint on the outer edges, making the line easy to see from above, while providing a subtle, blurry profile when viewed by a fish from below the surface. We believe the Sky Blue Liquid Crystal is the perfect compromise, offering a line that’s nearly invisible to the fish but easily seen by anglers and their guides.

35 TROPIC PLUS ™

INTERMEDIATE | (90') SMOKE

The new Tropic Plus™ Intermediate line is a super-slow sinking, thin-diameter line that excels in windy conditions where a slim profile provides a casting advantage. Made on a monofilament core with our hard-finished Tropic Plus coating, the line shoots like a dream and sinks just below the surface to avoid wind drift when conditions are the roughest. With dual welded loops and sized for school bones right up to trophy tarpon, the Tropic Plus Intermediate deserves a place on every serious saltwater fly angler’s extra spools.

CLEAR CAMO INTERMEDIATE | (100') CLEAR CAMO

Precision® Clear Camo™ Intermediate lines are one of the most popular all purpose intermediate lines on the market today. We start with a subtly mottled monofilament core that we extrude and custom dye before fusing it to a clear polymer coating that’s formulated to perform in a wide range of temperatures. A short, 30-foot shooting head loads and shoots quickly, and dual welded loops make quickly changing line and leaders extremely convenient. Also available in clear.

CLEAR INTERMEDIATE

Our Precision Clear Intermediate line is designed to sink slowly below the surface of the water, where it virtually disappears. Made with a supple, crystal-clear intermediate coating over a clear monofilament core, it sinks at a 1.25" to 1.75" per second rate for the most stealthy presentations to shallow, stillwater trout. Dual welded loops make rigging easy, and the all-temperature coating remains flexible in the coldest water. SIZES: WF 4-12

IF VOCAL CHORDS DIDN’T EVOLVE SPECIFICALLY TO TALK ABOUT FISHING, IT’S AT LEAST A HAPPY COINCIDENCE.

2014 F LY F I S H I N G C A T A L O G

In the distant past, history was passed down orally. Stories passed from one generation to the next served as a record of what had been and how they should be in the future. Naturally, anglers used their voices predominately to tell fishing stories and for over five decades those tales have included references to Cortland’s 333® fly lines. For many anglers its weight-forward and doubletaper excellence has not only been there since the beginning, but stood the test of time admirably. This year we're pleased to introduce the new 333® Classic series of high-performance fly lines, a contemporary update of the fly line that started it all.

TROUT / ALL PURPOSE

| (90')

333® Classic Trout / All Purpose fly line is a durable, high-floating, general-purpose fly line available in both weight-forward and double tapers. The weight-forward line features a modified long-belly taper for easier overhead and roll casting, mending and general line handling control. The double-taper lines feature precise front and rear tapers for accurate casts – and are reversible to double the usable life of the line. Designed to perform well with modern medium to fast-action graphite rods, the original 333 was the industry’s first modern PVC fly line and has been a popular choice among avid fly anglers for over 50 years. 41 MODERN FLY LINE CARE The coatings of most modern fly lines are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a hard plastic in its natural state, but soft and pliable when mixed with plasticizers and other chemical additives. Each fly line manufacturer uses their own secret blend of plasticizers and additives to control the performance characteristics of their lines, from slickness, flexibility in hot or cold temperatures, water repellency, to the hardness of the line coating. A few manufacturers, like Cortland, also apply special top coats to some of their lines, which are thin protective coatings of PVC and other compounds that add additional slickness and alter the handling characteristics of the line. While PVC is very durable and able to withstand hard use – it can be damaged by abuse. Most quality fly lines will last for many seasons if they’re cared for properly, so here are a few suggestions that will help you maximize the usable life of your new Cortland fly line:

CORTLAND’S FLY LINE WARRANTY

KEEP IT CLEAN: Fly line picks up microscopic bits of dirt, grit and algae which adhere to the surface of the PVC in an almost invisible film. A dirty fly line will not float as high as a clean line, and the grit clinging to a very dirty line can abrade the polished surface of the PVC when it shoots through the guides, which reduces its slickness and accelerates the deterioration of the line.

All Cortland fly lines and braided lines have a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects. Our warranty doesn’t cover damage caused by misuse or the the natural breakdown of materials over time and use.

Fortunately, cleaning a fly line is easy. Cortland supplies a free cleaning pad with every new line that will both clean and replenish some of the plasticizers in your line by simply pulling the line through a foldedover pad each time you go fishing. You can also quickly clean a line by pulling it through a soft, absorbent cloth that has been soaked in soapy water. But, whatever you do, never use vinyl treatments like Armor All,® silicone sprays, or WD-40® because they are very likely to damage the coating on your line.

To return a fly line for replacement due to a defect in manufacturing, please take the following steps: 1. Call our customer service department at 607-756-2851 or 800-847-6787 to describe the problem and obtain an RA# (Return Authorization Number). 2. Return the defective fly line with a written explanation of the problem, along with your name, your shipping address (no P.O. Box numbers!) and your contact information. We will determine if the problem is caused by a manufacturing defect. Fly lines showing normal wear and tear or damage due to abuse are not covered by our warranty and will be returned to you. Defective lines will be replaced at no charge.

Please note that we will not be responsible for packages that are lost

KEEP IT AWAY FROM SOLVENTS: Most aerosols, insect repellents and some sun protection products contain volatile solvents and other chemicals that can damage the coating of a PVC line. PVC in its natural state is impervious to almost all solvents, but plasticizers and other additives are not. So, be very careful when applying insect repellents because both the DEET and the alcohol-based carrier will attack the surface of your line. Gasoline and cleaning solvents are hazards, too. And, keep your line away from any fly floatant that advertises it’s “fast drying” because it probably contains a volatile solvent. KEEP IT AWAY FROM HIGH HEAT: Prolonged exposure to high heat will literally melt the plasticizers out of a fly line. Some of the hottest places that can cause the most damage include the dashboard, rear window ledge or trunk of an automobile parked in the hot sun. WATCH OUT FOR PHYSICAL DAMAGE: You can also damage a fly line by stepping on it (especially if your wading boots have metal spikes), jamming it under rocks or logs, or pinching it between the spool and frame of your fly reel. STRETCH IT: Even the most flexible fly line has a degree of memory so may take a set after storage on a fly reel. This is easily removed by gently stretching the line before you step into the stream. Ask a friend to pull off as much line as you usually cast, or stretch short sections between your hands to remove any lingering coils. A minute or two spent stretching your line will make a big difference in its shooting and handling characteristics. This is a good time to give it a quick wipe with your Cortland line cleaning pad, too.

or damaged in the mail, so please use a traceable service and pack the fly line well.

With the proper care and maintenance, your new Cortland fly line should last a long time, so it really pays to follow these few, common-sense steps. Even better, your line will shoot faster, cast farther and float higher – so you can catch more fish!

333® CLASSIC LINES

RETURN PROCEDURE:

TREAT IT SPARINGLY: There are many aftermarket fly line treatments and lotions that claim to improve casting performance when applied to a fly line. The best leave a microscopically thin film of slickness after replenishing some of the plasticizers and other chemicals that naturally migrate from a well-used line. The worst leave a thicker film that quickly picks up dust and grit. We recommend occasionally refurbishing your line with one of our line care products by applying a thin layer, carefully wiping almost all of it off using a soft absorbent cloth, and allowing it to dry on your reel overnight before heading out to the stream.

DAB™ FLY FLOATANT
