Welcome to the March edition of Circlework. Can you believe that we are this far into the year already! It seems like only yesterday I drank too much and fell asleep at a party, missing the midnight call of “Happy New Year.” Geez. Remember being in school and thinking how stupidly long the day was from 9.15am to 3.30pm - don’t forget the two half hour breaks and an hour for lunch. Also the easy classes like music and sports. Add in the time it took walking v.e.r.y slowly between buildings and we really only studied about 6 1/2 minutes each day. Now time is flying at a rapid rate and there’s not much we can do about it - and to remind us, Woolworths had their easter eggs on the shelves on February 5th!

Speaking of flying at rapid rates, make sure you check out the Rollercoaster photos on page 11. A mate emailed them to me. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry so I just said “holy crap” and quickly pasted them into this e-zine to share with the rest of the world :) Thanks to the clubs, event organisers, and individuals that offered so much help to me during last season. It was very much appreciated and gave me the opportunity to shoot a wide variety of photos in motorsports ranging from car club runs through to the V8 Supercar round last June. This year looks to be a bumper season and I’m particularly looking forward to covering all the events on at the newly resufaced Barbagallo Raceway as well as some two wheel action with the state motocross and the Shell Superbike Championships. For 2004, as well as the usual high quality gloss prints, we’re testing the water by offering a few items of merchandise as well. You can pick your favourite photo to be embossed on TShirts, mugs, keyrings, and stubbie coolers! Perfect gifts for your teams or sponsors. Make sure to send through your info for the April edition nice and early - we’ll be adding a ‘For Sale’ and ‘Wanted’ section for free advertising next issue as well. Motorkhana Report WA has to be one of the best places in the world to live doesn’t it? With blue skies and warm weather like this for around 9 months a year, why would you want to live anywhere else? Sunday the 15th dawned to another fantastic day. The weather was forecast to be hot. Great for the beach, not so good for Motorsport. Round 1 of the LCC’s club championship, a Motorkhana, to be staged at the Beverley race course. Surface: dirt, or rather dust over hard packed clay. Luckily a breeze was blowing all day keeping the dust from hanging around. Kevin Sleep (Clerk of Course) had planned on running 8 tests with several running concurrently. His motorkhana would be set with all forward tests, definitely a good idea with the dust. All of the tests were reasonably easy although some expectedly got caught out. The early morning start saw a rush at documentation. Everyone had got stuck behind the same haul pack being dragged up Great Eastern Highway. The Event Secretary and Club Secretary were certainly kept busy. The good thing about the Beverley race course is the large under cover area and grandstand available for spectating. During the day, competitors were able to do their run and then retire to the shade and cool of the grandstand to spectate. 38 competitors had entered the event. Ages and experience varied greatly. It was good to see so many new competitors.

Cars also varied greatly. The Wanneroo Youth Rally Team brought their Daihatsu Charades up, Mike Rowston brought his Honda Civic Turbo, Jo Bond, part of Lee Mcilroy’s Extreme team brought her Charade GTTI out for a run too. Geoff and Gemma Leatt-Hayter thought the V6 Suzuki Vitara would be a good go. Other cars in the line up included Hyundai Excels, a Nissan Exa, a Commodore and a Suzuki Mighty Boy to name just a few. More than enough proof that you can compete in any car at club level events and be competitive. As the day progressed drivers gained confidence and most were grabbing the handbrake around the cones and sliding about on the loose Beverley surface. Andrew Percival in his naturally aspirated Civic, was having a ding dong battle with Mike Rowston in his Turbo Civic all day. The Leatt-Hayter Vitara had the right combination of weight, power and tyre compound to be tyre squealing on every test of the day. Kevin Oxford showed rear wheel drive was both fun and fast in his Gemini. Dave Burton also slid his Stanza around in a similar fashion all day. John Thorburn, prominent as the lynch pin on many motorsport events, swapped his official’s vest for a time card and took his Ford Laser racing. By day’s end, 8 tests had been run and everyone was glad the dust had stopped. Mike Rowston had managed to pip Andrew Percival by just 0.5 seconds to take the win. The novelty of the day was Shane Orkney. Shane drove the infamous 96 FM Sigma. Last year as part of a radio competition, Karl Drummond won the 1982 Automatic Sigma wagon. The promise was to take the Sigma racing in as many events as the guys could get it to. Despite the lack of power, Shane managed a top 10 finish with a respectable 8th place. A great result for the car’s debut event.
Thanks to BORMSA, Kevin Sleep and all of his officials for braving the heat and the dust to set up and run the Motorkhana. A good day was had by all. The Light Car Club’s next event is a Multi Club Khanacross, due to be held on the 7th of March in Bindoon.

Rally Drivers do it Sideways Well finally the Sigma has made it’s competition debut. The Light Car Club championship began on Sunday (15/2) in hot and dusty Beverley. During the summer break we’ve fitted spotlights, mudflaps, alloy wheels & rally tyres. The car was ready to go, so now it was time to see how competitive the car would be. I also took my rally car (in the pics with the Sigma) up for testing and development during the day.
The LCC is holding a Multi-club khanacross on Sunday the 7th of March in Bindoon. NRL Assessments are available with prior arrangement from the CAMS steward. Food and drink will be available onsite courtesy of the Wanneroo Youth Rally Team Spectators are welcome, NO PETS ALLOWED. Please drive slowly whilst on private property. Directions to the Howland Motorplex (Farm) Head up Great Northern Hwy to Bindoon. Travel 10km North of Bindoon along Gt Northern Hwy Turn Right in Dewars Pool Road Travel approx 3km along Dewars Pool Rd Turn right through gate onto private property. (Gate will have LCC sign Up)
The first event was a Motorkhana, where drivers had to negotiate a series of courses set out with witches hats in the fastest time possible. Car control is crucial in these events as hitting a witches hat or going the wrong way will incur time penalties. 38 entrants stepped up to the plate for the event. Ages and experience varied greatly amongst the competitors. The loose Beverley surface made the car easier to drive sideways and turn in around the tighter courses. Being an automatic wagon, the Sigma is quite long and not renowned for bulk amounts of horse power. The first course saw the Sigma well off the pace finishing 13 seconds behind the leader. A few adjustments to tyre pressures and driving style to compensate for the lack of horse power saw the results improve. By the end of the day we easily managed to gain a top ten placing, finishing 8th. A great result for the first event. We’ve got some development ideas we will implement to improve power and handling. This should see good results in the next event, due to be held in Bindoon on March 7th.

Celebrations for 30th Anniversary of Australian Rallying in Western Australia The 2004 Respect Yourself Forest Rally, held 2628 March, marks the 30th anniversary of Western Australia (WA) hosting a round of the Australian Rally Championship (ARC). Celebrations do not stop there! It is also the coming of age as the Busselton based event celebrates its 21st birthday, and is the 10th year in succession that Respect Yourself has sponsored the event. “This year there will be plenty to cheer about during the Respect Yourself Forest Rally with three big anniversaries to celebrate,” said Ross Tapper, Clerk of Course for Respect Yourself Forest Rally. “Firstly, it was thirty years ago that WA held a round of the ARC and a reunion is being organised to celebrate the longevity of Australian rallying in our state.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Australian rallying in WA, a reunion is being held for all that have been involved in rallying during the past 30 years and will take place on Sunday morning 28th March at the Nannup Golf Club. The 2004 Respect Yourself Forest Rally, to be held from the evening of Friday 26 March 2004 until Sunday 28 March 2004, with the popular Busselton Toyota Super Stage at Barnard Park, now being held on both Friday and Saturday nights, providing spectators with the opportunity to enjoy the Super Stage twice.
The Service Park, which is free for all to attend, will again be located in the picturesque main street of Nannup where rally fans and budding mechanics can witness team engineers performing miracles during the twenty minute services. Sometimes engineers have to rebuild whole gearboxes in that time! Tickets are on sale now from the Pitstop Bookshop in Perth (Telephone: 08 9322 5544), Busselton and Nannup Tourist Centres, and Hillzeez Surf Shops for a very reasonable $10 each. Special weekend rally passes are only $25 and include entry into the Toyota Busselton Super Special Stage on both nights, and entry into the Nannup spectator point.

Motorvation 2004 beat all records when over 20,000 people attended Western Australia’s largest Street Machine show on 17 and 18 January 2004. This year’s event attracted more than 500 entrants, which is a massive leap from the 432 entrants at the same event last year. Entrants participated in various features such as the Show n Shine, IC Chill Driving Events, the Super Cruise, Sounds Xplosive Sound-off, the Formaz Dyno Competition and, of course, the crowd pleasing Burnout competition. Gary Myers from New South Wales was a crowd favourite in his Supercharged Mustang. Myers, who is fresh off a win in the Summernats Burnout competition, endears himself to the crowd by giving away rides in the Super Cruise and Burnout competitions. One of the lucky burnout winners decided to auction his ride off - donating 100% of the funds to Princess Margaret Hospital.

The Motorvation 2004 Grand Champion was awarded to Mark Miocevich’s ‘Fat GT’. Miocevich attended the Summernats in Canberra the previous weekend, where he earned a place in the Top 10. Drag Racing identity, George Separovich, took off the title of Motorvation 2004 Burnout King. Motorvation 2005 is expected to exceed this year’s numbers and people wishing to participate, either as an entrant or exhibitor, should contact Quit Motorplex to register their name on a database. BUMPER YEAR FOR WA ROAD RACING A huge year is expected for WA race fans and competitors alike with new model bikes, new riders, 7 local events, the return of a round of the National Championships and a newly resurfaced race track at Barbagallo Raceway Wanneroo. All the ingredients for great racing. This year, the Motorcycle Racing Club of WA heads into it’s 49th year and will again hold the prestigious Kings of Wanneroo/ Stars of Tomorrow meeting in April, followed by 5 rounds of the WA State Road Racing Championships. Two State rounds will precede the return of the national Shell Advance Australian Superbike Championships at Wanneroo to be held over 3 days in June – 25 –26-27th. The Club is working in conjunction with the new national rounds Promoter, Terry O’Neill and WA race fans can be assured they will see the best this country has to offer. All major teams are committed to returning to Wanneroo. No 1 Superbike Champion Shawn Giles will return with Team Suzuki and new team member Damien Cudlin; Nikon Yamaha’s Team consisting of Daniel Stauffer , Shannon Johnson and Brendan Clarke will be joined by Team Kawasaki with it’s two new riders on board, both Jamie Stauffer and Robbie Baird returning from the US; Castrol Honda is back with Josh Brookes and newly signed 2003 125GP runner-up Jason O’Halloran, plus the Brown Gouge Team of Brent George (03 Privateer Cup Winner) joined by Shaun Geronimi and Judd Greedy plus a host of talented riders. On the local scene West Australian riders are gearing up for a challenging new season. Plenty of new model bikes are expected trackside hopefully in time for the first State Championship round on May

Reigning 2003 Pro Superbike State Champion Stuart Adams looks set to return aboard his 03 Yamaha R1 but will have some stiff opposition this year with a number of A & B grade riders taking to this premier class. 2003 Supersport Champ Strett Cull and runner-up Russell Nash will both campaign Yamaha’s in not only the Supersport Championship but also in this year’s Superbike Championship. They will be joined by Danny Abrey and Malcolm Nanovich (Honda 1000’s) and ex Ducati stalwart Cameron Lee also on a new R1 this season. Ben Stronach – Formula 1 Superbike and B Grade Series winner will return aboard the Drilling & Grouting sponsored GSX-R1000 Suzuki supported by retired rider Sam Reynolds. Steve Mitchell (R1) returns along with Paul Nathan (R6), Mike Ward R6 and R1, Barry Black R6/ R1. Past State and National Champion Alan Watts is back for another year aboard the CBR600 along with Wayne Smith, both out to challenge for the Supersport Title. Kawasaki Motors will be well represented this year with ex 125GP rider Jack Declyn aboard a Mack 1 Kawasaki riding both state and national Supersport class. C grader’s Jeff Pickup steps off his 750 onto the ex Michael Quante Kawasaki 600 and Larry Moss has upgraded to a ’99 Fireblade. 2003 Superstock Series Winner Craig McSweeney will return to defend his title, aboard last year’s bike but will find pressure bought to bear by seasoned campaigner Geoff Allan and 17 year old Cameron Stronach riding his new Kawasaki 600 sponsored by Mack 1 Kawasaki. In the GP class stakes Team Allect rider Bryan Staring who will not only challenge for the national 125GP Championship but also will be competing on a new Honda in WA’s Superstock Series and 2003 125GP State Champion, young Tom Hatton will also be commuting cross country competing in both
National and State 125 Championships aboard his new RS Honda. Australian 250GP Champion Peter Taplin is considering a 600cc ride but looks set to return aboard the winning RS250 Honda. The newly sponsored Prime Realty 250cc Production State Championship will be missing it’s past 3 seasons winner Stewart Landers, but Margaret River based Jacob Furlong will be back along with Malcolm Brown, Luke Adams, Marc Nesbitt and Richard Langdon. They will be joined by a number of newcomers including Aprilia rider Levi Dicandilo. In the Sidecar scene 2002 State Winners Rob Hair and Chris Burrows are set to return to racing aboard the ex Murray Stronach outfit, after a season on the sidelines. They will be joined by Clive Watson and passenger Dirk Jeal who are swapping the F2 outfit for a more powerful F1 machine. 2003 State Champions Anthony Fagan and Bruce Rodgers will be back to defend their title along with Micky Robbins and Karen Dore and it’s rumoured Robert Taylor will also return. Past national and state champion Lindsay Fagan is preparing to challenge for the national title once again as well as compete at some of the local state events. A great line-up of talented competitors sure to thrill the WA fans this season.
