A Personal Thanks. As someone who has only in the past few years started to loiter around the tracks and media rooms of the V8 Supercar Series, it was recently heartening to see the human touch still exists in the world of big business and big budgets. After contacting V8 Supercars and chatting with the ever helpful Rebecca Guy, I explained I was hoping for a donation to assist in raising funds at a charity auction. I also contacted the equally helpful Lucy Peacock of Ford Performance Racing and enquired if FPR could make a donation also. The auction was for a young boy Mitchell Giffney, who at age three finds himself struck down with aggressive brain cancer, requiring constant, 7 day a week treatment some 200 kilometres from his family. The funds raised allow for Mitchells parents to take turns staying at Ronald McDonald House, next to Sydney’s Westmead Childrens Hospital. So, I sincerely thank Rebecca Guy and V8 Supercars for the 8 paddock passes to the upcoming 2008 Supercheap Auto 1000, and Lucy Peacock and FPR for the signed merchandise. Your contributions helped make a little boys difficult time that little bit easier. Alan Beattie Editor, Eastern States.

about

Each edition we’ll introduce you to some of our valued photographers and writers. Without them we’d have nothing to say or any pretty pictures to show you. These are the men and women who are out in the heat and rain each weekend bringing you the best of their craft. Hound them for autographs if you see them. Legends.

5 MINUTES WITH KYLESHARP PHOTOGRAPHER ( S Y D N E Y )

Nick names: Sharpie Cant’ live without: My phone and my Mac First Camera: Polaroid thingo. Where do you live: In Sydney Best advice ever given: Check your surroundings twice before shooting. Ensure you are safe. Most Anxious moment: Joe Signorelli’s six second Camrydore hitting the wall right in front of me. Most rewarding moment: My first Top Fuel round at WSID, being so close to a top fueller is surreal! What are your favourite areas of photography: Drag, Circuit, and Studio Why these areas: Studio is a pain to get right, so achieving a result is rewarding. I just love cars I guess! What are your goals: Quit the day job and make enough (money) taking photos to live comfortably. Shoot a couple of rounds of NHRA too :) Dumbest thing I have ever done: Not paying attention and missing a few crash shots I think. Favorite past time outside photography: Hanging out with friends, playing Battlefield 2. What have been some of your favourite photographic shoots: Jamboree at Willowbank, the whole weekend experience was amazing! A close second was the Festival of Sporting Cars at Bathurst last Easter - three days of motor racing at The Mount can’t be a bad thing!

CROSS-COUNTRY TRIP PAYS OFF FOR WINNER OF WALLACE BISHOP JEWELLERS PHOTO COMPETITION The trip made by West Australia’s Luke Nieuwhof to last year’s Castrol EDGE Winternationals has paid off with his firey image announced as the overall winner in the second Wallace Bishop Jewellers National Photographic competition at a special gala presentation last night. His image, titled ‘Rocket Man’, was taken during the 2007 Queen’s Birthday celebration at Willowbank Raceway, capturing Top Bike competitor Jay Upton leaving the start line, and is currently featured among 20 finalists in a public exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery. On hand to present the award and the accompanying 50-point half carat diamond first prize to the 22 year old last night at the Ipswich Art Gallery, was Wallace Bishop Jewellers Chief Executive Officer and Group One Top Doorslammer competitor Stuart Bishop. The World’s fastest jeweller was more than impressed with the quality of entrants during the second year of the competition. “I’d like to congratulate Luke for his efforts plus all our category finalists and winners and particularly thank the drag racing fans throughout Australia who submitted entries,” said Bishop. “The whole idea with the Wallace Bishop Jewellers photographic competition is to give regular race goers an interactive opportunity at any track in the country and the chance to win some great prizes.

“As can be seen by the finalists this year, we are looking at genuine creativity and something a little different with the images submitted. “Drag racing is a true passion of mine and I encourage everyone to keep on snapping as we aim to be back with a revamped program soon, so watch this space!” Willowbank Raceway will this weekend host the 2008 Castrol EDGE Winternationals at which Bishop will pilot his ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer, with the weekend’s action sure to provide all amateur and professional photographers the chance for some great images from the biggest drag racing event in the southern hemisphere. Nieuwhof will most certainly be there, ready to catch some more great shots after taking out the overall prize last night. “Wow, how great is this to win,” said Nieuwhof. “I’m not sure what I am going to do with the diamond as yet,” Nieuwhof laughed, “I will have to have a think on that one. “Seriously though, it is great to win, I would like to give my congratulations to all the other finalists and winners, and a big thank you to Stuart Bishop and Wallace Bishop Jewellers for putting on this competition.” Other winners who shared in the $20 000 worth of cash and prizes in the Wallace Bishop Jewellers National Photographic competition were Darryl Smith of Cashmere, Queensland in the Stu Bishop category for professionals, Trevor Jackson of Aspley, Queensland in the Stu Bishop category for amateurs and Neil Wilkinson from Swanview, West Australia for the general drag racing amateur category.

Countdown to Targa West

With Western Australia’s premiere tarmac rally approaching at a rapid rate, each month we’ll dedicate this section to keeping you informed on the latest happenings!

QUIT Targa West announce City of Perth as a Major Sponsor Western Australia’s premier tarmac rally, QUIT Targa West, has been given another boost with the City of Perth confirming their sponsorship of the 2008 event. With less than 80 days before the event kicks off on the 4th September, QUIT Targa West Event Director, Bob Schrader, said it was fantastic to once again receive the support of City of Perth. “City of Perth first came on board in 2005 and have remained a strong supporter of the event ever since, so it is wonderful they are continuing this support in 2008,” said Schrader. QUIT Targa West will involve approximately 80 teams from across the country, each team bringing with them service crew, sponsors family and friends. “The event is not only a credit to Western Australia but provides an important boost to the regions tourism and hospitality networks during the week of the rally,” Schrader said. “The 2008 sponsorship is recognition that City of Perth respects the important part QUIT Targa West plays in promoting Perth and its surrounds.” During the three days of competition the Competitors will once again be taken through the stunning countryside of the Kalamunda, Chittering and Toodyay Shires. Changes to some stages will provide exciting and challenging driving for competitors in both the Competition and Challenge categories.

The partnership between QUIT Targa West and City of Perth will enable the event to hold the official start in the Murray Street Mall, and will allow for the Show ‘n’ Shine to be held along James Street in Northbridge on Friday night. ‘City of Perth is very pleased to again be a major sponsor of QUIT Targa West. Perth and its surrounding areas are a great venue for motor sport and we enjoy the excitement that this sort of rally event brings to the City,’ said City of Perth Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi. The Show ‘n’ Shine provides rally fans and local residents with the opportunity to see the cars and their driers that compete in the rally up close and personal when they are parked along the popular Northbridge strip. With the City of Perth recently announcing development plans for the Northbridge Piazza on the corner of James and Lakes Streets, the night is sure to continue to attract large crowds. The Honorable Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi, will be hosting the next QUIT Targa West cocktail function on the 2nd July at Council House. All past and current competitors, along with Council Members, Sporting Council Officials and Sponsors associated with QUIT Targa West have been invited. There will also be a number of vehicles parked on the lawn in front of Council House which will bring colour to St George’s Terrace for the day.

Fellows Crowned 2008 King of the Desert David Fellows and Andrew Kittle turned on an awesome display of speed as they streaked across the desert to take victory in the 2008 Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race. Fellows dominated the event from the outset in the TRD Peter Kittle Motorsports Jimco. Winding the twin turboed V6 Toyota engine up during the prologue, Fellows put the other teams on notice. Posting a time 16 seconds quicker than his nearest rivals, Glenn Owen and Shannon Rentsch in the wet and muddy conditions.

V8 Supercar News National Updates on Australia’s most popular racing series.

Spence unveils footprint for Townsville V8 Supercar precinct Sport Minister Judy Spence has unveiled the first map outlining the construction area for the Townsville V8 Supercar race precinct. Ms Spence said: “This map shows Townsville residents exactly where construction will be undertaken, to develop this world-class multipurpose events precinct. “The declaration of this development area is the first big step towards transforming Reid Park into a raceway in time for the first V8 Supercar race next year. “The Queensland Government is committed to bringing this international event to Townsville. We are providing $14.61 million towards the total precinct construction cost of $29.58 million. “In addition, we will contribute $2.5 million annually for the first five years of the event to ensure it is a success for Townsville. “With the construction footprint now finalised, we can progress the detailed design of the track and facilities for release in the coming weeks. “Last month I brought special legislation before the Parliament so that the development of Reid Park could be completed in time for next year’s series, and we will continue to work with V8 Supercars Australia, Townsville City Council and other stakeholders to ensure this event is one of the best in the world.” Ms Spence said a range of measures will be put in place during construction to ensure local residents incur as little inconvenience as possible. For example: • Access will only be restricted in specific areas where works are underway; • Roads will remain open when not affected by construction; • When roads are undergoing work, appropriate traffic diversions will be put in place to reduce the potential impact on commuters. Ms Spence said suitable measures will also apply when the Championships are held, with V8 Supercars Australia required to develop a traffic management plan for the duration of the event.

“It is estimated that the event will generate $10 million a year in economic benefits for the Townsville region, with 130 full-time equivalent jobs created during construction. “A further 180 full-time equivalent jobs will be created as a result of staging the three day event each year. “Up to 70,000 people are expected to visit the city for the annual event, showcasing North Queensland to a massive audience.

“The V8 Supercar Championship series is the third most watched sport in Australia, behind cricket and the Australian Football League. In 2007 alone, almost 22 million Australian viewers tuned in to watch the V8 Supercar Championship Series. “The series also attracts a potential international audience of up to 850 million viewers across 130 countries. This kind of coverage presents us with a great opportunity to promote Townsville as a tourism destination around the world. “In this way, local accommodation and business

operators that service the tourism industry will reap the benefits of this event all year round.” Ms Spence said the designated area for construction of the Reid Park multi-purpose events precinct has been declared by gazette notice under the Motor Racing Events Act 1990. This notice declares the area for construction of the proposed V8 Supercar event and advises members of the public that they can inspect the map of the construction site at the Townsville City Council offices.

SKYCITY TRIPLE CROWN - DARWIN FAST FACTS 1. TeamVodafone’s Craig Lowndes is aiming at a ‘three-peat’ of victories at Hidden Valley after claiming victory in Darwin for the last two years. History isn’t quite on his side, given that Todd Kelly won in 2004 and 2005 but couldn’t get three consecutive wins in the ‘Top End’. It was Lowndes who spoilt his chances by beginning his current streak in ’06. Last year Lowndes finished eighth in Race 1 but rocketed through the field to claim Races 2 and 3. 2. A new Dunlop control tyre will make its debut at the Hidden Valley round. 1800 tyres have landed in Australia for use from the Darwin round through to the L&H 500 at Phillip Island in September. Rather than an oil-based additive, the new batch features a synthetic material used in the polymer binding agent of the tyre, It’s the first change in specification since Dunlop began supplying the control tyre to the V8 Supercar Championship Series in 2002. Ironically, no one has been able to top Jason Bright’s Hidden Valley V8 qualifying lap record set in the same year. 3. Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom heads to Darwin as the V8 Supercar Championship Series points leader for the very first time in his 60-round career. It also means that FPR is leading the driver’s Championship for the first time since it debuted in 2003. Winterbottom has given the team its best previous driver’s Championship result – third in 2006. His best Hidden Valley result came in that year where he qualified fifth and finished fifth for the round. 4. Jamie Whincup remains the only driver to have finished in the top 10 in each of the races he has started this year. Considering he missed three races in Hamilton of the 14 held due to a qualifying crash - and is still very much in the Championship fight - this is an amazing statistic. He is tied for most race wins this year with four alongside Tander and Mark Winterbottom. Will Davison and Craig Lowndes are the only other two winners with a single race each. That leaves Holden severely out-performed with just four race wins to Ford’s 10, a stark contrast to this time last season when the scorecard read 13-1 in favour of Holden. 5. SP Tools/Stone Brothers Racing young gun Shane Van Gisbergen heads to Hidden Valley fresh from a career-best finish at Sandown where he was fourth overall for the weekend and finished second in Race 2 to Craig Lowndes.

The 19-year-old Kiwi is again now visiting a track he has never raced on but it’s a track with good history for SBR. Marcos Ambrose won his firstever V8 Supercar Championship Series round at Hidden Valley for the team back in 2001. 6. Three drivers – Mark Skaife, Todd Kelly and Craig Lowndes – are trying to become the first three-time round winner at Hidden Valley. Each have won two rounds in Darwin, however Skaife hasn’t tasted victory at the circuit since his last championship-winning year in 2002. 7. Going into the sixth round of the Championship, no driver has managed to qualify in the top 10 in all five rounds held so far. HRT’s Garth Tander and SBR’s James Courtney both qualified outside the top 10 at Sandown, thus ruining their run of being the only drivers to make it to Leg 3 of qualifying in each round in ‘08. Tander’s 12th-place qualifying result was his first time out of the top 10 qualifiers since Winton 2006, an amazing streak of some 27 rounds. 8. The HSV Dealer Team’s Rick Kelly heads back to Hidden Valley once again a real Championship contender. The 2006 V8 Supercar Champion finished second in Darwin last year after taking pole position. Always consistent, Kelly hasn’t finished off the podium at Hidden Valley for the last three years with two third-places and a second. While he is yet to win a race this year, Kelly has been his usual consistent self and finished in the top 10 in 12 of 14 races. 9. Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Lee Holdsworth will have a full-specification Walkinshaw Performance engine at Hidden Valley for the first time in 2008 and hopes to show what it can do on the long straight. The Clipsal 500 runner-up has slipped down the Championship points in the last few rounds, with two retirements and four finishes outside the top 10 in his last seven races across the Hamilton, Barbagallo and Sandown rounds. 10. Six drivers are having their first start in a V8 Supercar at Hidden Valley. Shane Van Gisbergen, Kayne Scott, Michael Caruso, Andrew Thompson, Tony D’Alberto and Michael Patrizi are all having their first look at the Darwin layout. V8 Supercar Qualifying Record: Jason Bright, Holden Commodore VX, 1m07.8546s, 2002 V8 Supercar Race Lap Record: Jason Bright, Ford Falcon AU, 1m09.0149s, 1999

V8 Supercars on Seven head north to Darwin as the Championship becomes a four-way fight for the title 30 June 2008 --- V8 Supercars on Seven land in Darwin this weekend with four drivers – Mark Winterbottom, current champion Garth Tander, Jamie Whincup and Rick Kelly - locked in a four-way fight for the Championship. One will be leading the Championship on Sunday night after a brutal series of three 120 kilometre races across the weekend. It’ll be hot – a stark change from the last round in Melbourne – and fast, with the 1.3 tonne, 620 brake horsepower V8s hitting a top speed of 265 kilometres per hour on the sweeping and bending 2.9 kilometre Hidden Valley Circuit just south of Darwin’s central business district. It is one of the big events on the V8 Supercar calendar and Seven will be there with eight hours of live coverage across Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Matthew White and Neil Crompton. Daniel Gibson, Mark Beretta and Grant Denyer will call the action from the pits. Four of the five leading drivers in this year’s Championship are piloting Fords – with Craig Lowndes, currently fifth in the Championship heading to Darwin to see if he can make it threewins-in-a-row at the circuit. Lowndes’ team-mate, Jamie Whincup – for Triple Eight Racing – is the only driver to finish in the top 10 in all of the races in which he has started this year and is currently in third place in the Championship behind Holden Racing’s Garth Tander.

Mark Winterbottom heads to Darwin as the leader in the Championship – a first for “Frosty” and a first for a driver for Ford Performance Racing. Rick Kelly – currently fourth in the Championship for Holden Special Vehicles – is last year’s pole winner and has form in Darwin, finishing second in last year’s round . Holden Racing’s Mark Skaife holds the record for the most number of pole positions at the circuit, with four, and has won the most individual races: eight. Seven will have 15 cameras on-track. Carrying in-car cameras will be Garth Tander, Russell Ingall, Will Davison, Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup. Seven’s coverage on Saturday will take in qualifying and race 1 of the three races for V8 Supercars and coverage of Formula Ford. Seven’s coverage on Sunday will take in races 2 and 3 for V8 Supercars, V8 Utes and Formula Ford. AMBROSE GRABS 14TH IN NEW HAMPSHIRE Marcos Ambrose has turned in a solid performance by grabbing 14th place in the Camping World RV Sales 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire today. The result is Ambrose’s 11th top 20 finish from the last 15 races and gets the Australian closer to the top 10 in the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series standings. After entering New Hampshire 144 points outside the top 10, Ambrose now lies just 103 points away from 10th in the driver’s standings. Ambrose qualified the #59 STP Ford Fusion in 19th position for the 200-lap race and had a steady race, ending with a solid finish. Tony Stewart won today’s Camping World RV Sales 200 ahead of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. The 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Daytona International Speedway next weekend for the Winn-Dixie 250 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

DRAG RACING - JAMBOREE FINALS August 23-24 sees the Castrol EDGE Jamboree play host to the Grand Final of the Toyo Tires Sport Compact Series at Willowbank Raceway. As many would know, Castrol EDGE is no stranger to the Jamboree and have been involved with the event for a number of years. Castrol’s EDGE range of oils is specifically designed for the Import Sport Compact Market to provide the maximum protection and performance of these hi-tech turbocharged engines. With this being the last Round of the Series and over $30,000 in Event and Championship Prize Money up for grabs, the gloves will be off, in a battle to secure valuable points with 9 of the 11 Class Championships yet to be decided. Point’s won’t be the only thing on racers minds with the Castrol EDGE Jamboree being a National Record Setting event, the records are set for a beating. There is basically a class to suit any 4-cylinder, rotary, 6-cylinder OHC or 1999 & newer Sports Bike right through to full-chassis purpose built drag cars. Ever wondered what your pride and joy can do down the 1/4 mile? The Castrol EDGE Jamboree is the ideal place to find out and you can do it in a safe environment without the Police on your back.

PHIL READ - 2008 T/F CHAMPION Phil Read won his third consecutive Australian Top Fuel Championship at the 2008 Snap-On Nitro Champs held at Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID) recently, a mile-stone only ever achieved by one other Top Fuel racer in Australia in the past by his father, Jim Read. Phil was ecstatic of the victory, and compared his win to others: “With our first Championship, we came from behind to win, and then the second Championship we dominated from the beginning, but this Championship has been up and down, and has been very close throughout the whole season. We were very competitive in our first four races, and then in Perth we stumbled a bit, but with the car back on track again now, our consistency has been enough for us to wrap up

our third consecutive Championship”. With drag racing in Australia growing every day, and entering a new era receiving strong television support and sponsor interest and enthusiasm, Phil is pumped about the future of Top Fuel down under: “Our biggest threat for next season just happens to come from our team-mate, Martin Stamatis, who has also been very consistent this season, and is currently now second in the Championship as well. Top Fuel and ANDRA Championship drag racing in Australia is just growing from strength to strength, and our awesome sport is now getting known as “insert sponsor here” drag racing, so for us all at JRR, we are pumped more than ever before about the healthy future of drag racing, and particularly Top Fuel, in this country”. Phil’s third Championship came from lots of hard work and experience, and is a team effort, including the sponsors, crews, fans and everyone else who make it all possible, and Phil would like to make a particular mention to those who assist: “I would like to thank my hard working crew and sponsors who helped us out to get our third Championship, and I would like to make a particular mention that it was a huge team effort by everybody involved at all levels, including the guys who also help out over there on Martin’s dragster as well. Even though it may look like two separate teams on race day, the truth is that everyone who is part of JRR in any way wins, because we all actually operate as one team, not two separate teams, so everybody is a winner out of this. If a job needs doing, everyone chips in and helps out regardless of which car needs work done, and that’s what makes our team the strong and dominant force that it is. Sometimes we swap crew guys around, and it’s important that everybody is recognised and feels part of that, because we do operate as one team”. With the 2007/2008 Championship now finished, Martin Stamatis also finished second place in the points for the Championship season making it the perfect 1-2 finish for the entire JRR team. Top Fuel racing will return when the 2008/2009 season begins at the Nationals in September 1214 at WSID.

Herridge Extends APRC Campaign Dean Herridge and Cusco Racing have announced they will extend their partnership to include the team’s home event, Rally Hokkaido. Fresh from claiming the inaugural Pacific Cup title, leading Australian rally driver Dean Herridge and Cusco Racing have extended their successful Asia-Pacific Rally Championship partnership to include next month’s Rally Hokkaido. Initially contracted to contest rallies New Caledonia, Canberra and Whangarei, the former Subaru Australia factory driver delivered immediate success for the Japanese team with a pair of podium results and their first FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship title, the Pacific Cup. Currently sitting third in the Asia-Pacific championship points, extending the partnership beyond the Pacific Cup portion of the series was a logical step. Speaking from his home in Perth, Herridge is happy to continue his APRC campaign. “Although the initial plan was just to contest the Pacific Cup events, we registered to score points in overall series. Things have gone really well, both for myself and for Cusco”. “Our main goal was to win the Pacific Cup, which we’ve done. We now find ourselves third in the championship, just six points off the lead and a good gap to the guys behind us. And Rally Hokkaido is Cusco’s home event, and it’s a place I’ve been to a few times before. So I’m looking forward to continuing”. “Over the course of the year, we’ve made some good progress with the feeling of the Cusco Subarus. Yeah, we had a few small problems in New Zealand, but on balance, we’ve been improving with each round. With the Pacific Cup locked away, Hokkaido offers a great chance to try and get closer to the guys in front of us”.

Capturing the Pacific Cup Herridge joined Cusco Racing at the beginning of 2008 with the intention of earning the Japanese outfit its first international title. And Herridge set about driving to a fast yet consistent pace when he began at the season opening round in New Caledonia. “To get second on our first event with the team was exceptional”, said Dean. “We planned to just take it carefully and hope to get a top five, but in the end everything fell our way.” That gave Herridge confidence going into the second APRC round in Canberra, an event he has a solid track record at after claiming victory as a former Subaru Australia factory driver. With Cody Crocker, Taguchi and former Australian Rally Championship regular Scott Pedder leading the way Herridge once again opted for caution over aggression. “Canberra is always a tough event, it’s a real car breaker, so I was quite happy to sit back and let the guys ahead run their own race.” And again it was a plan that paid off with Pedder and Taguchi both suffering mechanical concerns. “I felt comfortable with my pace, the car was performing really well, and there was nothing to be gained by taking risks. Two podiums from two starts, and the points lead in the Asia-Pacific Championship – you couldn’t ask for more!” Dean beamed at the finish. The third and final Round in the Pacific Cup took Herridge to New Zealand’s Rally of Whangarei. The event, based north of Auckland, utilises roads formerly made famous by the local round of the World Rally Championship and offers fast, smooth gravel and the unique cambered corners only found in New Zealand. Crocker, Taguchi and Pedder all stepped up

their pace to chase the locals, Herridge fourth at the end of Day one. “The pace at the front was quite amazing. I probably lacked a little from grip throughout the day.” Day two remained the same with drivers maintaining their position all the way to the finish line, Herridge able to hold fourth just ahead of team-mate Yanagisawa. The result ensured Herridge and co-driver Chris Murphy were able to hold aloft the Pacific Cup at the finish line. “Incredible result, something that I could only hope for at the start of this season, but to be here now with the Cup in our hands is amazing. A great result and it repays the faith the Cusco team put in me to drive the car for them,” exclaimed Dean. His consistent performance this season encouraged Cusco to extend the partnership for the next round in Hokkaido, Japan. “It

was something the team talked about at the start of the year. It will be good to compete in Japan again, and hopefully we continue the strong performances in front of Cusco’s home crowd.” Rally Hokkaido starts on July 12. PRETTY IN PINK

Story : Luke Nieuwhof Photos : Brian White

Ignore the American Graffiti inspired black shoeboxes, the yellow rods or even those garish harlequin customs. If you want the fairer sex ogling your ride – think pink.

Bert Jansen’s 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne pulls more girls than Justin Timberlake. They’re like moths to a bright pink flame. Elvis himself would have been proud. “Originally it was blue on blue and I wanted something to make it stand out,” Bert said. Mission accomplished. “I originally had a softer pink in the Cadillac style but then went to this which is a bit more like Grease.” I think I hear Olivia Newton John swooning. She’d have to do some kind of convincing act to talk Bert out of giving up the keys to this fine machine though. It’s been in his family for 25 years although not always in such a pristine condition. “I like the 58 Chev because it is the ugly duckling of the 50s,” he said. “It was never very popular at the time so

that’s why I like it now.” Indeed the base-spec Chevs were mainly popular as fleet cars and often fitted with paltry six cylinders. There was one New York dealer who sold a drag edition however, believe it or not! It’s definitely swan time for the Chev now and more than thanks to Bert’s handiwork along with partner in crime Mal Schmidt. Together they have painted it up and de-

chromed much of it, taking the badges off at the same time. He spent time hand making the grill which he says was inspired by the 54 Corvette and assists in giving people a lot of confusion when they go to ID the car. The stares are just part of driving the Chevy equivalent of Mary Kay’s Cadillac. “It’s awesome to drive, like a lounge chair with a steering wheel,” Bert said. “You could do miles in it. It’s not very quiet and there’s no seatbelts, but it’s wicked.” And miles it has definitely done. It’s been over east and back three times and it’s so popular with the ladies that it’s done seven weddings – not to mention one funeral. Better than anything Hugh Grant could ever muster. Those comfy bench seats have been kept with a black and white interior by Keith Williams, offsetting the rosy outside with a retro tinge. A custom made console has been put in

for the t-bar auto, something Bert confesses pride in and maintains is very practical. It’s still got the vacuum wipes, for the ‘old school touch’ according to our man, despite their foibles. Can you pick where the sun visors are from? 1962 XP Falcon – err, I knew that. Also pretty in pink (not to mention chrome) is the 350ci V8 up front with four barrel carb, linked up with a 350 Turbo auto transmission. It runs a Borg Werner diff (it could be considered a Ford diff confessed Bert) and a stage two cam to boost that power band but has otherwise been kept pretty mild. It is a cruiser after all and the kilowatts needed to run any sort of times in such a heavy car could be put to better use powering several small countries. Disc brakes reside up front with drums on the rear to pull things up from speed. The suspension has been modified slightly to allow for towing the vintage caravan at a reasonable level. Stock rims are home to Diamond Back 195 white wall tyres that just finish off the nostalgic look. Friend Mal was indispensable in helping to adapt the diff, tailshaft and suspension set ups and line everything up. “It all fell together,” Bert said. “Most of the parts are readily available from the US.” Speaking of the caravan, it gives another avenue through which Bert is able to use the car. He also enjoys taking the car on the famous Big Al’s Poker Run and even goes shopping with it occasionally, even though leaving it in a car park can be a stressful experience. Next year he is going to the Street Rod Nationals to show it all off. “You have to be able to use it,” he said. “I’d like to be able to use it more. I just need more time, working up north isn’t good for that. Other than that I wouldn’t change anything about it. It isn’t a performance car, it’s a cruiser. CORTINA VERSION 5.0

Story : Andrew Van Leeuwen Photos : Brian White

British Ford enthusiasts and V8 owners rarely have much in common, the argument of cubes versus revs often driving a firm divide between the two. But what if you want the classic styling of British ‘60s with the raw torque of a V8? It’s really quite simple. Paul Ford is not only the proud owner of a very appropriate surname, but a very unique car to boot. There are no prizes for guessing that there has probably been a V8 powered late model Cortina or two before, but a V8 powered Mk 1 Cortina powered by TVR is definitely a rarity. The first question that springs to mind is why? “A mate of mine had a V8,” reasons Paul. “And I didn’t want him to have a faster car than me.” Makes sense really. Obviously the car has not always been subjected to V8 power. When Paul first purchased the car as a daily driver in the UK it was powered by the standard 1500cc power plant. Soon enough this made way for a worked 1558cc with Lotus internals and some serious mods. Whilst the car was making good power with 112 rear wheel horse power, a craving for something different led to a massive project to install a 3.9L Range Rover V8. It took two years, during which Paul saw very little of his girlfriend. “She though she was going to get her boyfriend back when the 3.9L went in, but after only 1200 miles I had to tell her I had sold the motor and had got another one!”

The new motor was a 5.0L TVR Griffith 500, which led to a new installation project. The fitting of a big motor into a small car is always going to be the problem. Ask Paul what problems he encountered along the way and with a smile he replies “It would be easier to describe what wasn’t a problem.” The general fit of the motor required a few body modifications. The firewall had to be trimmed back 35mm, with a modified 105E Anglia pedal box fitted to accommodate the required master cylinder positioning. The heater box under the bonnet was also trimmed back to make more space. However, with a bit of jiggling here and there, the motor fit. As soon as it did, the car was loaded in a container to make the long trip from the UK to sunny Western Australia, which brings us to where we are today. The 5.0L TVR motor has received only minor mods since Paul has owned it. Apart from being fully balanced, the internals are almost standard. This includes the rods, pistons and crank. The camshafts are different, with mechanical V8 Developments P404 cams replacing the standard units. Other modified internals include Volvo lifters and Group A Rover pushrods. The cylinder heads are Stage Four TVR. The injection system is a definite point of interest. Using Jag injectors and air flow meter, the ‘Corty’ features a fully adjustable ECU. Controlled by a hand-held unit within

and Capri, with components from each fused together to create the final product featured in the Cortina. The rear end is also lowered four inches, with Capri 2.8i single leaf springs. The shocks are adjustable AVO.

drivers reach at all time, the fuel flow is forever variable. It is dual circuit, which allows separate setting for cruising and for full throttle work. The system also makes rolling road tuning very convenient. The ignition is standard.

If you stumbled across this car sitting in a car park, you could be mistaken for thinking it was a very original Mk1 Cortina. Visually, the car looks as if it is straight out of 1966. The interior is standard original. The gauges are all period Cortina, with the tacho undergoing recalibration to accurately measure the V8s revs. Despite being out of a Daimler, the leather seats look original, along with the remade original roof lining and carpets. The steering wheel is a classic looking Moto-Lita which to Paul’s delight was on the car when he first purchased it. The only extra switch in the cockpit is the control for the electric fan, as well as the remote ECU, which is hidden in the glove compartment. The audio system is all Kenwood, with a 10-disc stacker under the seat.

The power output is not neck-snapping by hot rodding standards, however the estimated 345hp at the fly is impressive for a car designed to make somewhere around 60hp. To prove its capabilities, Paul needs only to sneeze at the throttle to get the rear tires smoking down Barbagallo Raceway’s start/finish straight. The package creates a striking note when the go-pedal is flat out, which is courtesy of 2.5 inch exhaust system. The whole system was home made out of stainless steel. There are a couple of other custom modifications relating to the engine, including some changes to the Mk 1 radiator so as to accommodate the V8. It would be wildly unrealistic to expect the standard Cortina ‘box to handle this much power, so Paul had wisely chose the install the very transmission the engine was developed with; a Rover 5 speed. The set up fits remarkably well, and with the standard shifter disguised with a period GT Cortina type gear knob, the untrained eye would never know. From the transmission the power heads to an LSD from a 2.8i Capri, with a ratio of 3.09:1. Brakes were another inadequacy. The standard Cortina units were unimpressive with 1500cc power, resulting in a required upgrade in stopping power for the V8. The front is now stopped by a British Austin Princess system with four pot calipers. The rear features Peugeot 405 discs clamped by Sierra Cosworth calipers. The wheels are classic British Ford, with 15”x6” Performance Superlites all round. The tires are Toyo Proxes, with 195/50s on the front and 205/50s on the rear. The suspension also received an overhaul with the new engine. The front end has been lowered four inches, with a Mk1 Escort front axle firmly in place. The coils are custom made, with Capri 2.8i gas struts and the standard sway bar. The steering set up is a mixture of Mk1 Escort

From the outside, the car is unassuming. The shell is an original ’66 GT Cortina and has not a single panel out of shape. It currently flaunts a stunning blue finish, which Paul describes as “midnight blue with a dollop of black for good measure.” The only modification to the external body is the original louvers on the bonnet. Squatting on the 15” rims, the car creates an interesting mix of classic style and pure muscle. In terms of future plans for the car, Paul says it’s just a case of finishing the engine conversion. “There are a few little teething problems, which is to be expected as it was a bit of a rush to get it into the container (to come to Australia).” Paul wanted something different, and he got it. He wanted something quick and he got that too. He sure has got himself a head turner!

ULTIMATE POWER

The HSV GTO is to a lot of people already becoming an iconic car. They are HSV’s tough version of one of Holden’s most international cars, the Monaro or, in the US of A, the GTO. A true two door, rear wheel drive V8, the right looks, the right noises and all the bits in the right places for a big Aussie sports car. In Troy Higgins’s case, his GTO was the platform for something special, something very special, and for the next step he chose Mark Else at Mark’s Workshop (MWS) to take on the task of producing 1000 horsepower at the wheels.

custom work to be carried out. It’s engineering art that has been composed on a large scale.

The enormity of the task is not to be under-estimated. It began, as all great builds do, with the bare block, a 427 cubic inch LSX engine imported from the US. These special-order performance engines come with gear rated to 2500 horsepower.

The parts list reads like an automotive enthusiast’s wet dream. Inside that block is a Callies 4340 four inch crankshaft, Oliver I beam rods, Ross custom forged pistons, JE rings, Michigan bearings, an ARP stud kit, Rollmaster timing chain, Comp Cams camshaft and magnum roller lifters, Trend push rods, Jesel roller rockers, ETP cylinder heads, custom Cometic head gaskets, LS7 intake manifold and UMI throttle body. The engine assembley was taken care of by a good friend, John Lloyd, from Street Quick Performance.

Yet, in producing power figures, the car is surprisingly not the only challenge. Dynamometers (dynos) have become far more accurate these days and producing high readings is not as easy as it used to be. There is also a struggle for traction on the metal roller, as even in fourth gear Troy’s GTO will light up the rear tyres like it’s standing still. Mark is the guru when it comes to producing spercharged power from Holdens, Fords and cars of all descriptions. Many of WA’s top performing cars have been fettled by his workshop and so for Troy he was the only man suited for the job. Getting the engine strong enough and flowing enough air were the biggest challenges to the goal and required plenty of

“We’re now struggling to get traction on the dyno,” Mark said.

A complete custom MWS supercharger system using a V7 YSI compressor, 50mm Gilmer belt drive and an MWS air to air intercooler have been custom fitted to the car and serve in delivering air for the 3 bar tune in the PCM management system callibrated with the team work of Mark, Katherine (his wife) and another friend and expert in his field, Daniel Collins from Chipmaster. Air needs fuel to make the power and in this case it is four 600hp

Bosch fuel pumps (not to mention another two 500hp in-tank pumps), a custom alloy tank which was necessary when the exhaust was changed, half inch delivery lines, a custom 12 litre surge tank, two Magna Fuel regulators, eight 1000cc injectors and Billet fuel rails doing the job. Speaking of that exhaust, it is comprised of a made to order set of ceramic-coated Difillipo two inch headers, Mark’s custom twin 3.5 inch SS exhaust system and well-crafted, hand-made alloy tips. “The body of the car had to be modified to take the twin exhausts as they did not come from the factory like that,” Mark said. The Cerametalic extreme duty twin plate is entrusted with passing the power on to the wheels. Power from an engine can be considered rather easy when you have an unrestricted environment, such as a full-chassis drag car. But it is when you must build within the confines of a street vehicle that the engineering prowess needed becomes clear. As such Troy’s GTO has been modified in a manner that can see it transfer between the dyno and the streets with a minimum of fuss. The giant bell mouth on the intake is only open for dyno runs, when it is on the streets it gets a filter. The fact is no reasonably sized filter will flow enough air to make such big power, nor does Troy want such power on the streets either as a responsible citizen. “This is a car that would spin the tyres at over 300kmh,” said Mark. “You couldn’t sensibly use it like that.”

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September 2008’ Baskerville Raceway will play host to the 2008 HQ Nationals, this will also mark the 20th Anniversary of the first HQ Holden race held in Australia at this track on the 23 of October 1988. This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the first race meeting held at Baskerville (The oldest continuously run circuit in Australia). So 'come to where it all began' and meet some of the great people that started this motor racing phenomenon. Proudly presented by,

Time has also been spent on the appearance of the car with a desire for a tough, but simple look. With the opinion that chrome wheels look a bit girly on such a car, Troy went for the black rims seen. The desire was for a factory look throughout and as such modifications such as debadging are subtle. The look was carried into the engine bay and it is hard to believe there are well over 1000 horses lurking under the bonnet. The wolf in sheep’s clothing this is. Dyno figures may purport to be an accurate comparison of the power of cars but Mark says the system is open to manipulation, as the machines make corrections to the power equation based on things such as air temperature which can be fudged to produce higher figures. “You can manipulate a dyno to achieve large figures,” he said. “But you need to be able to produce them in public, in competition, on someone else’s dyno, not just at a workshop.” Troy got to achieve his goal at the recent Auto Salon car show where the GTO maxed out the dyno with a reading of 1001hp. “Troy is a realist,” Mark said. “So to see him punching the air emotionally was a very special moment. That figure was all it had to do.” Now the car will potentially head to the Summernats if some sponsorship can be found. WA punters will get to see the car for sure at Motorvation next year. Mark has done some more testing since the Autosalon show on a bigger dyno and has got what is needed for full traction, so in the near future they may even show figures that are quite a bit higher, but for this moment the car has done its job. Troy wanted us to mention that he wants to thank Mark McKay (his boss) for all the help along the way.

KOMBI KLASSIC There’s something everyone can relate to about Volkswagen Kombis. Just about everyone has owned one, driven one or gone for a ride in one. But they’re not all as special as the next one. Those like Stephen Ferguson’s ute version attract a whole lot more attention from Kombi-philes. “It’s embarrassing to drive because of the amount of looks you get,” he said. “I have a 1966 Dodge Charger and I thought that was bad, but this is different altogether. A Kombi is not a big muscle car but it gets just as much attention.” You can’t blame the masses, they’re gawking in mutual admiration for Ferguson’s pride and joy. He imported the van from America after his previous Kombi was stolen, though it was later recovered. It was shipped to Brisbane where Ferguson began driving it home in a two week adventure across Australia. It defines the passionate Kombi owner, the drive is all about the experience. The drive, while embarrassing, is still an addiction for the man. “It’s an absolute blast, I still get goosebumps when I put it into second, it just has a beautiful note,” Ferguson said. “My son loves getting taken to school in it, he won’t let me take him in anything else. It’s a fun car to drive with universal appeal. “It’s useful to, you can put bikes in the back if you wanted to, not that I do all that often. I love the look and timeless style, it’s an iconic car like a Mini or a Beetle or a Rolls Royce.” The ute format of the Kombi is now hard to find. “Most were worked really hard,” Ferguson said. “The single cab is unusual,

there are only about three in Perth that I know of.” The uber-cool “Luv Bus” is powered by a 2074cc motor with twin Weber carbs. Bringing things to a stop are disc brakes and Ferguson soon hopes to have the suspension lowered to make it look even cooler again. The only visible change to the interior is an Autometer speed gauge. The restoration of the car was just six months old when Ferguson came into its possession meaning it was still in great condition. Only some minor compliance work such as lights, indicators and a tyre change had to be done to get the car ready to drive on Aussie roads.

Ferguson’s plans for the car have not stopped yet however. The man must be nuts as he has a desire to put in a turbo Porsche motor with tiptronic transmission. “It would possibly be a bit scary but I would also change the suspension completely and make the car ready for it,” he said. “But it has been done. People should check out race-taxi.ch, it’s a VW Split Screen body with a 993 turbo motor.” A Nurburgring capable Kombi ute – these Volkswagen guys really are a unique breed.

welcome to the september edition of psc If nothing proves that West Aussies build top notch cars then take a look at the September edition of Street Machine magazine. Out of the twelve finalists for the coveted ‘Street Machine of the Year’ (SMOTY) title, THREE are from WA! Travis Sturk-Ralls immaculate 1955 F100, Cassie Rhodes 1973 E55 Charger, and Chris Dicker’s 1971 HQ Monaro that was our main feature article in the last edition of Performance Street Car. Congratulations to all three and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more future contenders grace these pages over the coming months. Don’t forget to vote! I reckon a good chance future contender will be the GTO Monaro that is our feature car for September. Can you say “Over One Thousand

Horsepower at the Wheels!” Yes, you read correctly, this monster built by Mark’s Workshop in York is a firebreathing dragon of insane cubic madness. At Auto Salon it maxed out their dyno and made small children cry. On the opposite end of the scale is one of my personal favourites - a free loving, sixties fashion icon, the humble Kombi. This one’s not so humble though. A worked larger capacity motor and some serious attitude lends itself to the ‘bahn-stormer’. German made, Californian restored, now residing in Freo. A real international feast....Achtung baby! See ya round, Brian (www.circlework.com.au)

the track and admire the machinery in the pits. The track was certainly positioned in beautiful surroundings. Lush green grass 2008 TOTAL EVENTS TASMANIA AUSTRALIA CLASSIC MOTOCROSS and soft loam were to prove perfect riding conditions. The track had that WanderingCHAMPIONSHIPS esque feel to it but lacked our long wide corners, instead, incorporating lots of short 6TH, 7TH & 8TH JUNE 2008 HELD AT QUERCUS RURAL YOUTH PARK, tight turns. Organisers of the event ran all the different classes on the same track which CARRICK, TASMANIA initially raised a few eyebrows. In actual - by VMX WA Club President, Peter Lawson fact, it worked out quite well as the moderns actually churned up the track and certainly This years VMX Nationals was held at the made it more interesting. So we had some very picturesque town of Carrick, about 25- quite interesting combinations of races pre 30km west of down town Launceston. 85 solo 263cc and over, followed by pre 68 Allpowers. Sounds tragic on paper but it Months of preparation by Nick Maxfield actually worked. Practise was underway by ensured that 18 riders and their 23 bikes 2pm and competition started to leave as the arrived safely by sea container to a large sun set at 4.45pm. The day went like clock shed 300m from the track. The sea container work, machine examination was hasslearrived later than anticipated on the Thursday less, sign on well organized. The coffee van 5th, so it was a relieved group of riders that served good hot coffee and the catering was unloaded their neatly stacked bike containers! 1st class. You could even get a Cascade We quickly set about re-assembling our Draught from the well positioned marque / ‘loved ones’. beer tent! Friday morning, riders arrived at about 8am to the shed and pushed their bikes and belongings to the track. Quick shades were erected and VMXWA flag was hoisted with a salute from all. I’ve always wondered how cold it gets in Tassie in winter and if you didn’t know already, it gets bloody freezing and Friday morning welcomed us with a ‘pea soup’ fog, which didn’t lift until 12.30pm, and a light dusting of frost!!! keep this one to yourself dear, the reason the old mans bikes never start is I always put a few tablespoons of sugar in with his petrol Sign on and bike examinations were over by 11am and riders meet over by 1.30pm, which gave us plenty of time to inspect

The race gods were kind to Carrick on Saturday morning, and they lifted the fog to give us a cool, crisp but clear day. Race 1 pre 75 solo 250cc was underway by 9am and the Tassie Scramble Club managed to pump out 42 races (2 rounds) by dusk. Quite an achievement I must admit, no one even stopped for lunch (MA officials included). A fairly healthy crowd spectated all day but promises of a bigger crowd for Sunday were guaranteed. And how they were right, for the place was heething with folk Sunday morning. Four YZ 250A’s in a row how rare is that! One round (21 races) was scheduled for

Sunday, kickoff was about 10am, with lunch around 1pm. Lunchtime saw a swag of pre 68 do a demonstration run for the crowd and Nick ‘Wheelie’ Maxfield pleased the crowd with a few wheelies in front of the beer tent. Racing concluded by 2pm, then a demonstration by the over 70 year olds had the crowd on the edge of their seats – and didn’t the WA boys show ‘em how it was done – they certainly put the rest of Australia to shame!! The All-in proceded or as the Tassies call it – King of the Paddock’ – with an unusual theme to it. 8 laps long but after each lap up to the 5th lap, the last three riders are black flagged, so it was on for young and old! By 4pm, the quick shades were packed up, bikes washed courtesy of a large tanker and high pressure cleaner supplied by their club, and pushed back up the hill to be once again, dismantled, crated and ready for pick up Monday morning. Which gave us just enough time to shower, change, and catch the courtesy bus which took us to the stately home, Clarendon House, in the village of Nile. Here, a large marque had been erected for about 300-350 guests for the awards presentation dinner and dance. A terrific night where our club presented the Tassie Scramble Club with a swag of our t-shirts, and also our flag to hang on their club room walls. WA did well collecting numerous awards, which were as follows:* Super Seniors (ie. over 70) award went to Bill Watson, Graham Taylor and Ron Tyres. * Pre 78 263cc & over winner went to Kris Lingren * Pre 75 60 years winner went to Graham Taylor

* Pre 78 250cc 2nd place went to Kris Lingren * Pre 75 250cc & over 3rd place went to Brian Watson * Pre 75 under 30 years winner went to Kris Lingren * Pre 68 Unit Construction winner went to Peter Barker * Iron Man Super Seniors 4th place went to Ron Tyres, 3rd place went to Bill Watson, Graham Taylor got 2nd and Oldest Rider also went to Bill Watson. In a blink of an eye it was all over and we were back in Perth. It certainly was a brilliant Nationals. Very professional, well organized, good track, great food, no accidents (well, just minor ones). Tassie Scramble Club has certainly raised the bar and this nationals will be very hard to beat. It was an enjoyable experience to be part of. Roll on VMX Nationals 2009 in Queensland. Let WA show the rest of the country how to support an event. We certainly put the other states to shame. Those where the days,VMX at its very best. Before I close, there are a couple of people I would like to thank for their help and without their support this event would not have been so successful. With any event our club organizes, everybody plays an important part. Thanks goes to everybody who attended from WA and also their partners and families as they contributed to the success. A special thanks goes to Costa for making bike crates, Paul and Bill for helping unload and then reload the sea container on Monday morning when most of us were on a plane. Bill for

keeping an eye on the young’uns and not letting them get too cocky!! Frank and Steve who didn’t ride but gave morale support and free beer!!! (Very important that one)! The Bunbury Quartet for loading and unloading. Last but not least, the ever hard working, and bashful Nick Maxfield, who had a ball over the weekend and is now the talk of the town. He is now already featured on the OZVMX Forum. Go have a look at his style!!! Go Nick!!!

Yamaha Racing take red plate in Perth After already winning a swag of motos and a round, Yamaha Racing’s Jay Marmont has taken the lead in the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals after finishing third overall at the fifth round of the championship in Perth today. As Marmont forged a two point lead in the Pro Open series, Damien King was the highest finishing Yamaha rider in the Pro Lites with the New Zealander adapting well to the sandy conditions to finish inside the top five. It was a fantastic day for Yamaha at the second round in the Under 19s Championship with Matt Ryan finishing second and leading the blue charge on the series with Shaun Williamson and Ross Beaton finishing third and fourth respectively. Riders will have one week to recover from the sandy Wanneroo conditions before making trek to South Australia’s Murray Bridge next weekend. [Pro Open]

With their sights firmly set on taking the series lead, CDR Rockstar Yamaha proved that spending the week in Western Australia to become accustomed to the sandy track conditions was a valuable exercise with Jay Marmont and Cheyne Boyd both competitive at the challenging track. The weekend almost did not start as planned for Marmont who nearly fell going into the first corner of the opening moto. As Marmont started to claw his way back from ninth position, Boyd was challenging West Australian riders, Dean Porter and Michael Addison for the lead until finishing the race in third position. Marmont was fifth. Boyd blitzed the field at the start of the second moto with the CDR Rockstar Yamaha rider streaking ahead to grab the Holeshot and establish the lead ahead of Porter and Addison. For Marmont it was not as easy with the YZ450F rider falling going into turn one and dropping to 22nd as he struggled to get his bike started. As Marmont began his fight through the field, Boyd continued to lead the race until the halfway mark when he was passed by Porter. With his sights

firmly set on a on podium finish, the Victorian continued to record some strong lap times until the last lap when his bike ran out of fuel, forcing him to retire from the race. Marmont finished the race in third position which provided him with third overall and the series leader’s red plate. He now has 212 championship points and is two ahead of his nearest rival, Craig Anderson. “The result today is unreal. While we’ve had race and round wins taking the red plate means so much especially now as we enter the second half of the series,” Marmont said. “The first day when I arrived here in Western Australia I did not feel good at all. I can say now I was totally lost in the sandy conditions but worked on all the skills needed and managed to come through on the day.” “The bike was fantastic and we really didn’t have to change much in between race, there were only a few adjustments made to make me more comfortable. It obviously worked, with the bike taking me from dead last to third in the final moto.” CDR Rockstar Yamaha Team Principal Craig Dack said the weekend was bitter sweet. “It is great to have Jay [Marmont] sitting at the top of the points table with a two point lead with as we go into the business end of the championship. That’s what we’re here for and we’re doing everything in our power to make sure we have the best shot at the title,” Dack said. “Cheyne [Boyd] rode well today and he has well and truly returned back to form after struggling with injury at the start of the season. It is just a really unfortunate circumstance that he ran out of fuel on the last race, we put the same amount of fuel in Jay’s bike and it lasted the full race distance.” Team Seven Fly Yamaha had another challenging

day at the office with Tom Jones unable to start the first race after blowing a brand new engine after showing great potential in qualifying. As Jones watched from the sidelines his teammate Danny Ham completed a great ride in the first moto and after falling at turn one went from dead last to finish the race in 11th position. The second moto did not go as planned for the former champion and after getting a great start fell at turn one. From there he followed fellow Yamaha rider, Jay Marmont through the pack and worked his way to 10th position until a fall caused him to retire from the race. 2008 Rockstar Energy Drink Pro Open - Round Five Overall 1. Dean Porter 50 points 2. Michael Addison 44 points 3. Jay Marmont 36 points 4. Lee Ellis 31 points 5. Daryl Hurley 30 points 6. Craig Anderson 29 points 7. Cameron Taylor 28 points 8. [Pro Lites Report] Damien King proved that experience and maturity can lead to a strong race finish with the New Zealander finishing fifth overall on a spare bike prepared by the Yamaha Junior Development

Team. King got a good start to the first moto and worked his way to the top end of the field and challenged fellow Yamaha rider, Ford Dale for third position. In the final stages of the race, the New Zealander had two minor crashes with his experience seeing him recover and finish the race in seventh position. King continued his fantastic form in the second moto and after establishing some good solid laps early in the race maintained pace with the top half of the field. He improved on his previous moto finish and cross the chequered flag on position higher. King’s top five overall finish is his best of the 2008 season and he is now eighth in the championship. “The was pretty happy with the bike today and I did not have to make any major changes to it. All I had to do was turn up and put fuel in it,” King said. “It was tough out there today and I think I am proof that experience can make all the difference. I just focused on running my own race today and picking good lines for the track conditions.” The fifth round of the series saw Serco Yamaha rider, Ford Dale return from injury by getting an awesome start to the first moto. After leading the race for the first 20 minutes arm pump set in the final phases of the race and forced him to slip back and finish inside the top eight. Dale got another good start to the second moto and was competing with the front runners until colliding with Kade Mosig. The incident saw the YZ250F rider pushed into a sand bank which caused his bike to stop, costing him valuable time and track position. He finished the race in 17th position and was 15th overall. Lewis Stewart had a challenging weekend with the Serco Yamaha rider crashing in the first race

and finishing in 12th position. Despite carrying a sore back the Victorian was able to start the second moto and fought through the pain to finish in side the top eight and claim ninth overall. The weekend was not profitable for Team Seven Fly Yamaha’s, Kirk Gibbs who was a notable absentee from the race results sheet with the young South Australia unable to finish the first moto due to a leg injury sustained last weekend at Murray Bridge. The injury is a bitter blow to the YZ250F rider who was third going into West Australia’s only round of the MX Nationals. He will seek medical advice on his leg during the week in the hope to compete at next weekend’s event at Murray Bridge. 2008 Pro Lites Championship - Round Five Results 1. Luke George 45 points 2. The attack was led by Matt Ryan who rode two well constructed races with maturity beyond his years to finish second and third in the two motos. The Victorian is currently within striking distance of the series lead and is in second on 75 points. Challenging Ryan throughout the day was Team Seven Fly Yamaha’s Shaun Williamson who switched positions with Ryan throughout the two motos and recorded the fastest lap time in the process. He is now third in the point score just seven points behind his fellow Yamaha rider. Ross Beaton also completed a strong weekend with the Tasmanian sticking to his pre-race plan throughout the course of the first moto to be the fourth to cross the finish line. In the second moto, the Yamaha Development Team Rider completed a scintillating performance and after crashing and falling to 18th finished inside the top five. 2008 Under 19s Championship - Round Two Results 1. Super result for Mark Aitchison in Misano Triumph BE1 Racing rider Mark Aitchison posted a fine sixth place finish in round seven of the Supersport World Championship round at Misano in Italy. The Australian continued his impressive form by qualifying on the second row of the grid and running as high as fourth position in the race. His battles with Frenchman Fabien Foret and Dane

Robbin Harms were the highlights of a tough race at the sweltering hot Adriatic circuit. With his tyres shot in the closing stages of the 93km race, Aitchison was unable to maintain his optimum lap times and eventually slipped behind his rivals. In the end he finished just a tenth of a second behind fifth placed Harms, recording the best result yet in his debut season in the class and equalling the sixth place recorded by Triumph’s Garry McCoy in round two of the championship. The Misano race, one of the toughest of the season due to the high temperatures, brought many positives for Triumph in its debut world championship season. Aitchison’s teammate Ivan Clementi was also in the thick of things and gained his best result of the year with an impressive ninth, putting two Triumphs in the top 10 for the first time. McCoy, riding with an injured foot, was running in the points until retiring just before half distance. All three bikes regularly were regularly among the fastest through the speed traps and Triumph has maintained its record of scoring points in every single round of the championship. Back in Britain, Aitchison’s fellow Australian Glen Richards maintained his lead of the British Supersport Championship with a fifth place finish at Mallory Park, the small racetrack located just a few miles from Triumph’s Hinckley factory. Aitchison and Richards have been sharing considerable set-up information on the Daytona 675 and having dominated the dry practice sessions with a pole position time almost a third of a second faster than the competition. But a heavy downpour just minutes before the start of the race threw the form book out of the window and the experienced Richards rode a mature race to bring his MAP Embassy-entered Daytona 675 home in a comfortable fifth place in the tricky conditions. With six of the 12 rounds gone, Richards leads the championship by 20 points.

Happy 30th Birthday To The Honda Although The Honda Shop is no longer involved in motor vehicle sales, they have Shop Perth! Wellard Yamaha hang tough at Jindong W.A. State round #5 was held at Jindong near Busselton 200ks south of Perth. This loamy country circuit is fast becoming a favourite for team riders with its big jumps and high speed flowing corners. At this track without a good start overtaking is only for the brave. 250F rider Daniel Strickland (Five Star Yamaha) has been working hard on his fitness after returning from a six week injury lay off. His YZ250F was running perfect and the suspension settings were just right. With a top three start in race one he set about regaining some lost Championship points. While fighting for second position he had a crash that sent him to last in the field. Once he remounted, the young hotshot methodically picked his way back through the field to fourth place by race end. It was an awesome display of riding and with a lap or two more he could have reeled in the leading riders. He put in two more solid rides to post 4, 3, 4, and just miss the podium by two points. “My contact lens fell out just before the last race and I could not get it back in, so I just rode behind one of the guys hoping he would choose the fast lines and I might get to pass him near the end but it wasn’t to be” stated Daniel. Controversy surrounded the team’s 85cc riders Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) and Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) both were stripped of their points in race two after it was deemed they did not slow down sufficiently for a yellow flag.

They were fighting out for the lead a long way in front of the pack when they came across a fallen rider. Each rider maintained they slowed considerably from their race pace and a protest was lodged by the Team. At the hearing Motorcycling Australia officials listened to the case put forward by Peter Strickland the Team Manager but in the end they still upheld the point’s loss decision. “This is a very hard pill to swallow considering we are one and two in the championship” he commented. “Kyle and Jayden have worked very hard to establish a good point’s lead and to see it disappear like that when there were so many other similar infringements is pretty tough.” Fired up for the last race Kyle and Jayden went out and smoked the field just to remind them who is boss. 125cc Satellite rider Craig Bolton (Five Star Yamaha) was finally able to shake the monkey off his back with three great moto’s to claim third outright for the day. This also moves him to striking distance of the championship podium.

When BMW rider Chris Pfeiffer crosses a bridge, he crosses it in style. BMW Motorrad’s Chris Pfeiffer is never one to turn down a challenge, especially one that he has set for himself. The current Indoor Streetbike Freestyle World Champion has amassed many records over the years, including a ‘bunny hop’ over 33 people without a ramp in 1997 and performing 15 wheelie circles in just 30 seconds in 2000. However, his most recent challenge saw him quite literally rise to the occasion on the brand new BMW G 450 X. Top photographer Bernhard Spottel captured a famous image of Chris a few years ago when he became the first person to climb the Via Tina - a level 3 difficulty scale climbing route in Arco, Italy - on a trials bike! He has been taking pictures of Chris ever since then and picks up the story: “Chris told me that it had been his dream for over 10 years to ride a motorcycle up and over the side of a particular bridge in Italy. It is only about a metre wide and once you start there’s no way you can stop - you just have to keep going or you will fall off! There’s no margin for error whatsoever and if you don’t get it right then you are in trouble!” Whereas most riders prefer to keep both wheels on the ground at all times, all Chris Pfeiffer could think about was how to get a motorcycle on to one of the side arches of an Italian tied arch bridge he had first set eyes on all those years ago and had dreamed of riding over ever since. “I had already walked over the top of this bridge several times during the past few years but somehow had never got around to actually riding over it,” said Chris. “Now with the BMW G 450 X I felt that it would be possible to ride up, across and down the bridge arch.” For this particular ‘project’, Chris knew that he would only have one opportunity to attempt the crossing, and his immediate problem was that his entry point - the start of the arch - was 1.6 metres in the air. As it would be virtually impossible and illegal to set up a ramp to jump on to the arch, Chris decided to ask one of his sponsors - Red

Bull - to see if they could provide a vehicle to ‘assist’ his passage onto the start of the arch. “I was lucky, as they [Red Bull] provided me with a ‘Hummer’ and a driver, and I was able to reach the start of the arch by jumping from the solid roof of the Hummer. This also meant that we were able to leave the scene fairly quickly afterwards, without attracting unwanted attention and having to worry about dismantling a ramp!” The narrow bridge arch was 20 metres above the water at its highest point and Chris attempted it first on a trials bike before returning an hour later with the BMW G 450 X. Not one to suffer from a fear of heights, Pfeiffer made sure his photographer was in place to capture the action as he fired up the new sports enduro and just went for it: “To ride over this bridge was like a dream come true for me - I’d never done anything like it before. It’s pretty steep - much steeper than it looks on the pictures - but I knew that it was possible. I felt better actually on the bike than when I had walked across to check it out, even though I’d only got the G 450 X two days before. It’s a standard bike and I had a two-hour ride to get used to it and to find the right sprocket for this run. “I hadn’t actually been on the G 450 X since the Erzberg Rodeo last year where I rode the 450cc prototype, but this was the only BMW that I would attempt this stunt on - the other bikes would be too heavy for the jump from the roof of the car onto the arch and for the run up the arch afterwards. The arch was pretty steep and I was happy when I was on the top but I always felt in control. Going down was great fun and I even did a stoppie for good measure! Jumping down the 1.6 metre drop at the exit was no problem either with this sports enduro.” Having just returned from riding stunt shows in St. Petersburg, Chris’s thoughts are now turning to shooting footage for his forthcoming freeriding DVD, as well as competing on the G 450 X at the European Hill Climbing Championships at Obersaxon in June. Chris will also be using a custom-built F 800 powered, two-wheel drive ‘BMW’ in the ‘open class in his quest to reach the top of the gruelling hill, so watch this space for more details.
