Letter from CIS Head of Athletics and Activities Welcome to the CIS Competitive Sports Programme! At CIS, we believe that competing in sports positively contributes to a student’s holistic educational experience. Sporting opportunities allow students to grow socially and emotionally, and to become well-rounded individuals who achieve balance in their lives. Well organised, high quality inter-scholastic athletics programmes are offered for students across the school. Information about age requirements can be found on the Sports page of our website. At CIS Students are encouraged to discover their interests and strengths, and to challenge themselves athletically and be true risk-takers. Our competitive sports programme emphasises our core values of respect, commitment, integrity, collaboration and responsibility, and we ask that all of our team players uphold these values. These same values are exhibited by our coaches who act as role models as they foster positive attitudes, support teamwork and display a healthy respect for rules. At CIS, our sports programmes strive to: • • • • • • • • •

INTRODUCTION This handbook acts as a resource guide for coaches, parents and students. It contains information about sports participation at CIS, as well as guidelines and expectations for competitive sport. If you have questions or concerns that are not addressed by this handbook, please contact Mr. Jeff Martin, Head of Athletics and Activities at jeff.martin@cis.edu.sg.
CIS Competitive Sports Programme Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools (ACSIS) CIS is a member of ACSIS (Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools). ACSIS provides over 30 schools with a comprehensive competitive sports programme over three seasons, throughout the school year. A list of schools and their locations can be found on the ACSIS website (www.acsis.com.sg). Multiple divisions are run in most sports for a variety of ages. Games are hosted regularly at CIS and at other member schools. Most teams will have a league based tournament with one game day scheduled each week, culminating in a finals weekend at the end of the season. ACSIS Mission Statement The mission of ACSIS is to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to compete in a broad and balanced interschool athletic programme that is an integral part of their educational experience. Win or lose, ACSIS schools will encourage student-athletes to provide a winning effort, exhibit sportsmanship, and demonstrate respect for all. What ACSIS Sports are Offered at CIS? ACSIS Age Groups The age cut-off for ACSIS for most sports is 1 June of the start of the sport season. Some sports, such as track and field and swimming, have adopted an “Age-on-the-Day” guideline.

A player who is 9 years old on May 31, and turns 10 on or after June 1 of that calendar year is eligible to play in the 10 and under competition.

A player who is 10 years old on May 31, and turns 11 on or after June 1 of that calendar year is eligible to play in the 11 and under competition.

A player who is 11 years old on May 31, and turns 12 on or after June 1 of that calendar year is eligible to play in the 12 and under competition.

Competitive Sports Participation Policies Academic Eligibility Requirements At CIS academics always take precedence over competitive sports programmes. CIS recognises the value of sports and the positive role they can play in reinforcing the core values of the school. The CIS sports programme highlights a balance between academic life and emotional and physical well being. The ultimate goal is not to limit student participation in sport, but to help students learn to manage their time and be successful in all areas of school life. Practice and Game Policies Practices are not permitted on Sundays, non-activity weekends or during school breaks unless approved by the Head of Athletics and Activities. Practices should not exceed two hours in length, but students may participate in two practices per day (on the same team) with the approval of the Head of Athletics and Activities. Athletes may only attend practices and games up to 5 days per week (exceptions are made for tournament competitions and with consent of the Head of Athletics and Activities).

Attendance Policies School Attendance and Practice/Competition • On a game or practice day, participants must be in school a minimum of 80% of the school day. • For the purposes of competitive sport a student is considered absent after 9:15 am. • Students who are ill are not permitted to train or compete. • All students participating in ACSIS sports must participate in PE classes on practice and game days when school is in session. This includes swimming classes. • A student who is absent from school on the day of an event will not be eligible for the practice or competition unless their absence is due to: 1. Unavoidable medical procedures 2. A death in the family 3. Participation in a school sponsored field trip • Students are not permitted to leave campus and return later for practice unless permission is granted by the Head of Athletics and Activities or Division Principal. Unexcused Absence from a Practice or a Game Athletes are expected to participate in all practices and games unless there is an emergency or the absence is pre-approved. Failure to comply with this rule may result in reduced playing time and/or removal from the team. Sanctions for Unexcused Absence from a Practice or Game • Before any sanction is applied, the student will be informed of the concern and given an appropriate amount of time to address the problem. • The coach or sponsor will email parents to inform them of the student’s absence. • Should the behavior continue, the following three step process will normally apply: 1. For a second offence game sanctions may occur, including removal from the event or the next game. The parents and student will be informed of the sanction. 2. If there is a third or subsequent offence the student will be removed from the following game or practice. She/he will meet with the Head of Athletics and Activities and the Coach to discuss an action plan, which may include suspension from participating for the remainder of the season and removal from the team. 3. Before any suspension or removal takes effect, the student will be counselled as to why the absences are occurring and assistance may be offered at this time. Discipline Athletes are expected to behave in a manner that is consistent with the behavioural expectations set out in the Parent and Student Handbook as well as the policies listed in this handbook. If an athlete’s behaviour does not meet expectations, coaches will discuss the behaviour with the student and, if necessary, involve the Division Principal and/or Head of Athletics and Activities so that appropriate action may be taken. If major behavioural expectations are breached the coach will remove the athlete from the practice or game immediately.

General Information for Coaches Appointment of Coaches The Head of Athletics and Activities is responsible for the appointment of coaches, and prior to the start of the school year will determine which coaching positions are vacant. Vacancies may be posted after a coach/sponsor has served three consecutive years in the same team and when a coach/sponsor is departing CIS. Any CIS teacher may apply to coach where a position is available. All appointments are on an annual basis. If there are no applicants for a vacancy the Head of Athletics and Activities will canvas staff for potential coaches. Preference will be given to CIS teachers, but, if necessary, accredited external coaches will be recruited. Coaches Responsibilities Coaches are expected to organise, develop and plan an effective training programme and instruct athletes on the rules governing competitions in that activity or sport. They are also expected to be aware of, and accept, the CIS Academic Eligibility Requirements. The Head of Athletics and Activities will assist coaches whenever possible throughout the season. Coaches assume responsibility for all members of the team and must supervise the practice or playing area (no practice or portion of may take place if the coach is not present). They are also expected to maintain weekly contact with parents and students regarding games and training. The Head of Athletics and Activities must be copied on all correspondence to parents. It is the coach’s responsibility to ensure that all team members are familiar with the behavioural expectations contained in the CIS Parent/Student Handbook and the Athlete Code of Conduct. If the behavior of a CIS athlete does not demonstrate good sportsmanship, coaches are encouraged to remove the player from the match and counsel them on their behaviour and/or allow them a “time out” to cool down. In addition, coaches have administrative responsibilities which include: • Ensuring proper care and daily storage of all equipment and supplies. • Periodically conducting inventory of equipment and reporting damage or loss to the Head of Athletics and Activities as soon as possible. • Promptly submitting lists, rosters, forms, requests for information, etc. to the Head of Athletics and Activities, as required. • Responding to requests from the Sports Administrator. • Notifying the Sports Administrator whenever he/she is absent from school on a game or training day. • Ensuring that all students are accounted for and out of the gym or off the field after training or games. • Submitting a brief game, event or season summary, as requested by the Communications and Marketing Department, along with photographs, which will be included in school media channels.

• Completing and submitting end-of-season reports as requested by the Head of Athletics and Activities. • Promoting attendance at all sporting events by posting on all available schoolwide media (e.g. school website, regular communication channels, Edmodo, etc.). • Attending the end of year Awards Event. Coaches’ Meetings Prior to the commencement of the season, the coach will meet with the Head of Athletics and Activities to discuss the upcoming season and review administrative procedures. All coaches are required to attend their meeting unless schedules conflict. Every effort is made to avoid scheduling games during faculty meeting times. The nature of sport and its scheduling means that occasionally this cannot be avoided. If a conflict occurs between the playing schedule and a faculty meeting, the coach will contact the Principal and indicate how much time is required to attend the match. Roster Size Rosters are based on ACSIS policies. Time, space, facilities, equipment, coaching preferences, and human resources will determine team size, but rosters must fall within ACSIS requirements. Once selected, additional students may not be added to the rosters and no uniform will be supplied to extra players. Once a team is selected, and prior to the first match of the season, coaches must submit team rosters to the Sports Administrator. Rosters are sent to league conveners and are binding in all disputes. Home Games/Contests Game scheduling can be very challenging and is based on conference meetings with all the ACSIS international schools and their calendars. Requests for friendly games outside the regular season should be put in writing to the Head of Athletics and Activities. Scoresheets are provided for all home games by the office of the Head of Athletics and Activities. All match reports must be delivered to the Sports Administrator, immediately after games. ACSIS requires that matches be reported within 48 hours of a game or teams are subject to a 1-point penalty.The preferred method of delivery is via SMS to the Sports Administrator. Delivery via mail is also acceptable. Coaches and players are requested to assist in set up for games whenever possible. The Athletics department will also assist. End of Season Duties All keys be must returned to the Head of Athletics and Activities. A complete list of confirmed players must also be sent to the Sports Administrator.

General information for Students and Parents Tryouts Middle School students must attend one tryout session. High School students will have an opportunity to attend a minimum of two tryout sessions. If a student is unable to attend tryouts due to medical or other extenuating circumstances, and has advised the Head of Athletics and Activities they intend to tryout, their case may be reviewed and they may be given a later tryout. Team Selection Coaches will select teams from the tryout sessions, using their own criteria, provided they are consistent with the philosophy of our sports programme. Students in the appropriate age group will be chosen for teams first. Students may only play in an older age group if an insufficient number of age-appropriate students have registered. Students may only play on one ACSIS team per season. Students who are not selected to a team will be notified in a sensitive manner so as to minimise disappointment. Transfer Students New students are eligile toplay on an ACSIS team if they join CIS before the midpoint of the season, provided they are eligible and space is available on the team. Decisions concerning eligibility of students who join after the midpoint are at the discretion of the Head of Athletics and Activities. Uniforms Each team member will be given a school team uniform at the beginning of their season. Uniforms are to be worn for games only. Team Parents CIS is always looking for Team Parents to assist coaches so that they are able to concentrate on coaching and team development. Teams parents are a valuable parent of communications within the younger teams in our ACSIS leagues. The Head Athletics and Activities will make every effort to recruit Team Parents for each 14U and younger ACSIS teams. Team Parent Responsibilities: • The role of a Team Parent is similar to that of a team manager. They are the communications link between coaches and parents. As such, it is preferred that they be present at all matches, but they are not expected to be at every practice. • Team Parents will receive copies of all necessary correspondence sent by coaches and the Athletics Department, and will serve as a second contact point for parents • The Team Parent will have SMS access to the coach and all parents on the team. • Team Parents will be alerted if teams are arriving late or when late cancellations occur, and will assist to notify parents. • Parents may contact the Team Parent to get accurate information on arrival times and potential cancellations.

• Team Parents are also asked help showcase their child’s team by providing coaches with short game reports and photos which will be shared on our website. Action shots and team photos are both welcome. • Although not required, it has become popular to support teams with snacks at and/or before matches. This is especially useful for younger teams, but no less valuable to High School teams. Nurse and Emergency Actions One nurse will be present at each home game and any time CIS hosts a tournament. In the event of an injury, every effort will be made to notify parents as soon as possible. In the event of an emergency the Head of Athletics and Activities, coach or Principal will make the decision as to what action will be taken. Any athlete who requires emergency medical attention will be treated at: National University Hospital 21 Lower Kent Ridge Road, 119077 Phone: 6516 6666 Procedures for Away Games Busing Procedures All coaches and/or sponsors must ride to and from the event on the designated bus and must ensure all players are safely accounted for and delivered to their parent or designee upon their return to CIS. Students must remain in their seats at all times, with seat belts fastened, while the bus is moving. They are permitted to eat on the bus while on their way to sporting events. Parents are permitted to travel on CIS sport buses provided the coach is aware they will be travelling with the team. Siblings are not permitted on a team bus without a parent (this does not include “helpers”). In the event of late arrivals or long traffic delays parents may contact Ms. Ong from Goh Transport: 9788-2291 If buses are late, or do not arrive, coaches should contact: Ms. Ong from Goh Transport (97882291) or the Sports Administrator (8428 3019). If drivers are using their hand phones while driving coaches should not confront the driver, but advise the Sports Administrator via email or SMS as soon as possible. Accident or Injury Coaches must have parent contact information with them at all times. In the event of an accident or injury coaches must contact parents first. In the event of a medical emergency, the Division Principal and Head of Athletics and Activities should also be contacted.

Travel Outside of Singapore Many students will have the opportunity to travel to other cities or countries in the region for various events or tournaments. Whenever possible flights are arranged on school days, with reasonable return times. Athletes and teams traveling on two to three day events are exempt from exams and major assignments for the two days following their return to school. School work that is due on the travel day should be turned in before departure. Travel Costs All travel costs are borne by the athletes and parents. CIS will pay for tournament registration and coaches’ costs. Visas and Passports Coaches and players are responsible for ensuring that their visas and passports are valid for at least 6 months after the date on which the trip or tournament finishes. If a visa is required to enter the country where the event is to take place every effort will be made to ensure visa requirements are communicated to parents and athletes in a timely manner, but it is the responsibility of parents and athletes to obtain and pay for the visa. If entry or return is denied to an athlete, a coach or school representative will remain with the athlete to assist. In the event that this occurs, all additional travel costs for both the coach or representative and the athlete will be at the parent’s expense. Clothing Each coach and player is representing CIS and their families when travelling with teams. First impressions are important. The following guidelines are in place to ensure CIS athletes and coaches make the best possible first impression when travelling. • • • • • •
No jeans or denim material is to be worn. Team travel tracksuits or other team gear may be worn. Shirts must have a collar, may be a CIS polo or team shirt When tracksuits are required, they must be worn by all athletes. Shorts are not permitted at any time when travelling. When traveling in clothing other than tracksuits, formal shoes must be worn (e.g. no track shoes or sandals) • The coach and Head of Athletics and Activities reserve the right to deem any athlete’s clothing to be inappropriate.

At the Host School or Event Students are expected to be on time for all team functions, meetings and departures. Coaches will provide players with a contact number and hotel room where necessary. All players will remain in their own rooms at night and are not permitted to be in closed co-ed hotel rooms. Curfew Policy CIS mandates a curfew of 10 pm for all students in hotels or home-stays. This curfew remains in place for all CIS sporting events off campus. Violation of curfew is a serious offense and flagrant violations will result in the student being eliminated from the event and possibly sent home. If a student is sent home for violation of curfew it will be at their parent’s expense. Guidelines for Coaches Travelling Outside of Singapore Pre-Departure Duties Coaches have the following responsibilities prior to departure: • Notify their Principal of the upcoming event and arrange for a supply teacher. • Ensure their team knows the CIS travel procedure, uniform, transportation, hotels and details of the tournament. • Assemble all required gear, first aid supplies and equipment. • Help athletes to follow through with their pre-departure responsibilities. • Submit complete team rosters to the Head of Athletics and Activities, along with any other forms required, at least one month prior to departure. Duties During Events Coaches are the group leader and administrative representative of CIS at an event or tournament. As such, they have the following responsibilities while at an event outside Singapore: • • • • • •

Supervise all airport check-in at both Singapore and host city/country. Reconfirm all tickets while in the tournament/event city. Ensure that all CIS policies and event policies are followed by all CIS athletes. Take appropriate disciplinary action if violations of rules, policies or expectations occur. Make curfew calls/checks. Take charge in the event of a medical emergency. Coaches should notify the student’s parents, accompany the injured/sick student to the hospital, and arrange payment of bills, and follow up as required. An emergency fund of $2000 SGD or equivalent is pre-arranged by the office of the Head of Athletics and Activities. Be present and represent CIS at any meetings, games, ceremonies or performances. Communicate with the Athletics Department regarding event results each day. Be prepared to stay with a student who may not be able to return to Singapore because of lost passport or visa difficulties. Attend all team activities. Enforce the travel dress code when traveling to and from the tournament.

Violation of Tournament Rules Violations of tournament rules include: consumption of alcohol, tobacco and drugs; cheating; deceit; quitting a team without a valid reason; showing disrespect for other players, coaches or tournament officials, flagrant breach of curfew and being in off limits areas. Abetting another person to commit any of these infractions is also a violation of tournament rules. If tournament rules are violated the student will be removed from that tournament or event and kept under strict supervision. If feasible, the student may be sent home at their parent’s expense. Upon return to Singapore all CIS policies relating to student conduct will be imposed. Punishment may include school suspension and/or exclusion from all ACSIS or other events for one full year. In-school guidance counseling may be recommended. The student will automatically have a 40 day extra-curricular exclusion, beginning on the day the event infraction is discovered. For that period, the student will be required to leave campus directly after school each day and may not attend any events that occur on the weekend/holidays for a period of 40 instructional days. If the infraction occurs in Season 3 the penalty will carry over into the subsequent school year. If there is a subsequent violation of tournament rules the student is automatically excluded from all ACSIS or team sanctioned events for one full year, including the same event the following year. Serious offenses may remain on their student records.
Athletic Awards ACSIS Season Certificates are distributed to all athletes, either at sports recognition assemblies (for Seasons 1 and 2 sports) or at the Athletic Awards Assembly at the end of the school year (for Season 3 sports). Major awards are also presented during the Athletic Awards Assembly. Recipients of major award will receive a trophy and/or a Silver Commitment or Gold Commitment medal. Team awards are not presented in Middle School sports. High School Female/Male Sportsperson of the Year This award is presented to an outstanding female and/or male high school student, preferably in Grade 11 or 12 who has participated in two or more seasons in core sports (Rugby, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer and ACSIS Swimming). Winners will be awarded a trophy, which will be presented by their coach(es) and/or the Head of Athletics and Activities. Coaches and the Head of Athletics and Activities will vote on the winner(s). Winners of this award will be a true representatives of the spirit of the Husky Athletics Award who exhibit: • • • •

Leadership and good sportsmanship both on and off the field or court. An abundance of team and school spirit. Good or excellent knowledge of their sports. Commitment in both practices and games, by attending a minimum of 85% of all games and practices.

High School Coach’s Choice Award This trophy is awarded to a genuine team player who shows a true passion for their sport and has the aspiration to learn and work with both the coach and the team. High School Coach’s MVP Award The winner of this trophy will be an individual whom both coaches and teammates can count on in those key moments in the game or practice. She or he is a player who strives to improve their skill and raises the level of competition. Middle School Female/Male Sportspersons of the Year This award is presented to a female and/or male Middle School student in Grade 7 or 8 who has participated in all three ACSIS seasons, and one or more individual sports where possible. Winners will be awarded a trophy, which will be presented by their coach(es) and/or the Head of Athletics and Activities. Coaches and the Head of Athletics and Activities will vote on the winner(s). Winners of this award will be a true representatives of the spirit of the Husky Athletics Award who exhibit: • • • •
Leadership and good sportsmanship both on and off the field or court. An abundance of team and school spirit. Good or excellent knowledge of their sports. Commitment in both practices and games, by attending a minimum of 85% of all games and practices.
Silver Commitment Award A silver medal is presented to all Middle and High School ACSIS student athletes who have completed two full ACSIS seasons. Gold Commitment Award A gold medal is presented to all Middle and High School ACSIS student athletes who have completed three full ACSIS seasons. Swim Team Awards All athletes in Middle School or High School who compete in ACSIS sanctioned swim meets will be eligible for awards at the annual Athletic Awards Assembly. The Swim Team also hosts a separate awards event to recognize swimmers and their contributions to the year in sport at CIS.

Competitive Sport Codes of Conduct At CIS we are committed to helping students develop self discipline, a spirit of cooperation and teamwork, and respect for rules and authority. We inspire our athletes to act with integrity, fair play and good sportsmanship in all events and sports. Developing and maintaining team spirit plays an integral role in achieving these objectives. Accordingly, Codes of Conduct have been developed to ensure that coaches, students and parents understand the important roles they play in developing and fostering team spirit. Athlete Code of Conduct Participating on a CIS competitive team is a privilege that may be revoked if a student does not adhere to the Athlete Code of Conduct. Athlete’s will demonstrate commitment to the CIS sports programme by: • • • • • • • • •
Learning and abide by the rules of their particular sport or activity. Trying their best at all times. Showing respect for all equipment, both personal and team. Using appropriate language. Demonstrating an appreciation of the game or activity. Maintaining high academic standards. Recognising that participation in competitive sport at CIS is a privilege, not a right. Being punctual and reliable. Staying in top physical condition, being self-motivated and able to motivate others.
Students will communicate openly and honestly, showing respect for coaches, teammates, parents, officials and opponents by: • • • • •
Having a positive attitude towards the team, opponents and officials. Helping to foster a productive and positive team environment. Communicating with teammates and peers in a positive and encouraging manner. Accepting constructive criticism. Students will demonstrate good citizenship and integrity by: • • • •
Behaving appropriately on and off the field. Acting as a good role model for other students. Showing pride for their team and CIS. Playing by the rules.
Breach of Athlete Code of Conduct If there are concerns about a student’s behaviour or academic performance, the student’s teacher, the grade level lead, the Head of Athletics and Activities and the division principal will make a decision on the best course of action for the student.

For serious behavioural or academic concerns a 3-step approach will be followed: 1. When a problem has been identified the coach, teacher, grade level lead, Head of Athletics and Activities, grade level lead and division principal will meet to discuss an appropriate action plan. This may include a loss of privileges and, in the case of more serious matters, suspension from the sport for that season or event. If the student’s academic performance does not meet CIS standards the student may be required to take a break from competitive sports until they demonstrate they are able to balance academic responsibilities and sporting commitments. 2. A meeting will be convened with the student and parents to provide clear guidelines regarding the action plan. 3. The goal is to return students to sports participation as soon as possible; however, the student may require a break from competitive sports or expulsion from the team. Any decision made to suspend or remove a student from a sporting activity will be made by the Head of Athletics and Activities, and the division principal. Coaches’ Code of Conduct Coaches are expected to set an example for others at all times, ensuring they show respect for the game and the team, and comply with CIS standards and expectations for coaching. Coaches will: • Dress appropriately for all practice and game sessions. • Demonstrative conduct and use language that is appropriate for an adult working in a supervisory role with students. • Represent CIS in a manner that reflects well upon the team and the school. • Be punctual and reliable. • Communicate with the team in a timely manner that allows for preparation for travel, practices and games. • Seek the approval of the Head of Athletics and Activities for any additional team requirements or rules beyond what is outlined in this handbook and, if approved, clearly convey those requirements and/or rules to athlete at the beginning of the season. Parent Code of Conduct We expect that communication between parents and coaches will occur openly, honestly, and with respect. Any issues or concerns should be reported in an appropriate manner. Parents should first approach the coach with any concerns. Where possible it is better to avoid discussing the matter immediately before, during or after a competition or practice. These can be emotional times for parents and coaches and meetings of this nature usually do not promote resolution. We therefore ask that parents wait 24 hours before contacting the coach on a particular issue. If concerns remain after speaking with the coach, parents may then contact the Head of Athletics and Activities. If, after meeting with the Head of Athletics and Activities, the parent feels the issue has not been dealt with adequately they may speak with their child’s division Principal.

We expect parents to act as role models, demonstrate good sportsmanship and provide a supportive environment for their student(s). We ask parents to join us in demonstrating this by: • • • • •
Providing support for coaches and officials to foster a positive experience for athletes. Encouraging their child to play within the rules and respect officials and opponents. Understanding the game is for the student and not the adults. Recognising that student participation in competitive sport is a privilege, not a right. Behaving in a manner that reflects well on CIS and the team, including using appropriate language and refraining from harassing players, coaches or other spectators. • Refraining from coaching from the sidelines. • Ensuring their child consistently attends practices and games.

SPECTATORS Fair Play Policy • Remember that athletes participate in sport for their enjoyment and benefit. • Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants on their performance, regardless of the game’s outcome. • Respect the decisions of the officials. • Positive comments are motivational. “Booing” is not an acceptable form of cheering. • Do not use violence in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players. • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them, there would be no game. • Encourage your children to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions. • Do not use foul language, ridicule or harass players, coaches or officials. • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every athlete regardless of their gender, ability, or cultural background.

PLAYERS Fair Play Policy • Play by the rules. • Never argue with an official during a game or match. If you disagree, ask your captain or coach to respectfully approach the official after the match for clarification. • Control your temper. It is an offence in sport to verbally abuse officials, mock other players, or deliberately distract or provoke an opponent. • Work as hard as you can for both yourself and your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you. • Show good sportsmanship. Applaud all good plays whether your team or the opposition makes them. • Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor. • Cooperate with your coach, teammates and opponents. • Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please your parents and coaches. • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, or cultural background.

PARENTS Fair Play Policy • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment. • Encourage children to participate, do not force them. • Focus on your child’s efforts and performance not win’s or losses. • Encourage children to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without anger. • Make your focus about positive comments and encouragement. • Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skillful plays by all participants. • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. • Respect officials’ decisions and teach children to do the same. • Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.

COACHES Fair Play Policy • Remember that students participate for enjoyment. Winning is only part of the fun. • Positive feedback is encouraged at all times with athletes. • Be reasonable in your demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm. • Work within the rules and spirit of your sport and teach your players to do the same. • Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young people are deserving of attention and opportunities. • Give time and attention equally to all members of your team. • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players. • Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Your players must do the same. • Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition. • Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people. • Ensure that physical contact with a young person us appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development. • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.

ADMINISTRATORS Fair Play Policy • Give all young people appropriate opportunities to participate. • Create pathways for young people to participate in sport, not just as players, but also as coaches, referees, administrators, etc. • Ensure that rules, equipment, length of games and training schedules are modified to suit the age, ability and maturity level of all players. • Provide quality supervision and instruction for players. • Remember that young people participate for their enjoyment and benefit. • Celebrate successes, but try not to overemphasize awards. • Help coaches and officials highlight appropriate behavior and skill development and help improve the standards of coaching and officiating. • Ensure that everyone involved in sport emphasizes fair play and that winning is a nice bonus of hard work and fair play. • Support implementation of the school’s athletic, academic and awards policies. • Make it clear that proper support is the only acceptable coaching practice. • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.
