Grades 7 Mathematics Grade 7 Overview
A review of 6th grade Mathematical Concepts & Skills, with emphasis on: The Order and Structure of Numbers (factors, multiples, order of operations), Exponents, The four operations with directed Numbers (positive/negative integers), Decimals, and Fractions, and Basic Percentages. Mental Maths and Problem Solving with Divisibility Strategies Percentage of a Quantity, Percentage Composition, Commission, Simple and Compound Interest, Percentage Loss/Gain, Percentage Increase/Decrease Rate, Ratio, Proportion & Scale Drawings Algebraic Patterns & Rules, Four Operations with Pronumerals, Index Notation, Factorising, and Algebraic Fractions Solving Algebraic Equations/Inequalities, and Formulae Angle Properties and Basic Angle Construction
Grades 8 Mathematics The focus for this year will be on “communication, more than calculation”. •Algebra – factorizing and solving more complex algebraic equations •Pythagoras’ Theorem - origins and applications of the theorem •Cartesian Graphing – introduction to two-variable equations and inequations and the graphing of linear functions •Indices – introduction and application of rules for operating with exponents •Geometry – surface area and volume of two and three dimensional composite figures •Geometric Constructions – develop the skill of using a compass and straightedge to construct accurate geometric figures •Probability and Statistics – determining how likely something will occur and calculating and communicating data (mean, median, mode, range, frequency, deviation)
Grade 7 and 8 Humanities Rationale “MYP humanities encourages learners to respect and understand the world around them and equips them with a skill base appropriate for a learner in the 21st century. Incorporates history, philosophy, economics, geography, sociology and politics. • How living an non living factors affect these ecosystems? • What is matter made of? • How do homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures differ? • How does heat transfer from one object to another?
All of these questions will be answered for your students and many more in their Grade 7 science experience.
Science Grade 8 How is science used to solve problems in life and society? How do scientists communicate information? Units: The Scientific Method, Cells and the Human Body and Forces. The learning focus of these sections will include: Review of the Scientific Method, the structure of experiment design, differentiating independent variable/dependent variables, and research & reflection in scientific investigation. This unit focuses on how healthy cells, organs, and systems contribute to healthy organisms. It also assesses the impact of cell biology on individuals, society, and the environment. This unit will explore how different forces act in our environment, describing forces, density, weight and mass, and kinds of friction.
Grades 7 and 8 Language B Language B – a foreign language which students in the mainstream classroom take. CIS offers Mandarin and French at this time. • two key concepts in Language B: Communication and Culture • the new MYP Language B Guide refers now to phases of language development and no longer to Foundation, Standard and Advanced • phases provide us with the opportunity to place students in the most appropriate level of proficiency • language conventions and grammar are integrated into the units of study (4-5/yr) MANDARIN •6 teachers offering 5 different levels, or phases, from Beginner to Advanced/NearNative (Ms. Chen, Ms. Liu, Ms. Miao, Ms. Yu, Ms. Chong, Mr. Chen). FRENCH •4 teachers offering 4 different levels, or phases, from Beginner to Advanced/NearNative (Ms. Gouin, Ms. Carrier, Ms. Chartrand, Ms. Toma)
Grades 7 and 8 Language B ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS Criteria was reviewed and revised. Highest level is Level 8. The following areas will be assessed: • Oral Communication • Visual Interpretation • Writing • Reading TO KEEP IN MIND • students are required to study the same language during the MYP years (7-10); changes are not possible, except in very special circumstances and must be approved by MYP Coordinator and Language B Learning Lead. QUESTIONS? • for content and assessment of skills of a class/level - to your child’s language teacher • general MYP Language B, content, assessment – to Ms. Toma, atoma@cis.edu.sg MERCI.
