Restaurant in Copenhagen The restaurant is open from 5pm until 10:30pm. It’s in Copenhagen. There are a lot of different kinds of foods.

In the restaurant, the workers are mostly from Israel.

There is also fish on the menu. The building is from the World War 2 era. If you want to go to a 4 star restaurant, go there!

Meet 3 CIS Students

Noam Noam was born in Hong Kong. He lived in Israel a long time ago. Noam likes the beach and the food. He has a big family there. He’s not going to Israel too often, but he goes there a few times in the year.

He likes the beach. His favorite holiday is Hanukkah. In that day they’re lighting candles and getting presents. Something that was hard for him by moving to Denmark is to make new friends. Some things that Noam thinks are similar between Denmark and Israel is that in both of the countries there are a lot of beaches. One word that Noam wanted to share with us is Shalom which means Hello.

Omri Omri is from Israel and he was born in Haifa, a city in Israel. He thinks it was really fun to live in Israel because he had a lot of friends that he loved to play football with.

He goes back to Israel about 1 time a year.

His favorite food from Israel is Gondi, he likes it because he thinks its really tasty. He eats it most of the time on Fridays. His favorite festival is Hanukkah because you get a lot of candy and cake and you light candles. One word Omri wanted to share with us was Friends and in Hebrew it is Chaverim. His hardest part of moving to Denmark was leaving his best friends in Israel and meeting new friends here in Denmark. One thing that was similar to Denmark and Israel was that in both of the countries they lived close to a park.

Ofir

Ofir was born in Israel and Denmark. Ofir has not really lived there, but he has family living there. Ofir misses his friends and food. Ofir likes to go to Israel to eat food with friends. Ofir really likes shawarma because you can put shawarma inside a kind of wrap.

Omar's favorite holiday is Wol Pulau because you eat good food and dress up. A word that Ofir said in Israeli is Shalom because it is a nice word. It means hello. A thing that Ofir misses is his friends. One thing that is the same in Denmark is its fun there. Something you can do in both countries is have good popcorn.

Famous Landmarks in Israel

Holy Sepulchre Church

Mount Zion A hill in Jerusalem named Mount Zion is right outside of the walls of the old city. You might be surprised to know that Mount Zion is the highest point in ancient Jerusalem. It’s south of the old city's Armenian quarter.

Did you know that Holy Sepulchre is one of the most famous churches in Israel? In the center of the Rotunda is the chapel called the Aedicule, which contains the Holy Sepulchre itself. The Aedicule has two rooms, the first holding the Angel's Stone, which is believed to be a fragment of the large stone that sealed the tomb; the second is the tomb itself.

Dead sea You might be surprised the Dead Sea is also called salt sea or salt lake. It's between Israel and Jordan in southwest Asia. The Dead Sea is also having a very special history. From the times in Greek and Roman periods, the dead sea has been a part of many historical moments.

The Western Wall

The Western Wall is one of the most important places in Israel. This place is important to the Jewish people, to Muslims and others. There was a war on it. Everyday thousands of people are praying there. The Western Wall is built from rocks and in them there are people that are putting their wishes there.

By Eliya Did you know that along the beach and sea there is a promenade. It's wonderful to breath the fresh, salty air of the Mediterranean!

The Tel Aviv boardwalk is considered one of the world's most beautiful. To sit on a bench and watch the Tel Aviv life unfold before your eyes with beach goers, paddle players and joggers doing their thing as the sounds of waves gently crash on the shore.

Delicious Israeli Food Shakshuka

Challah

Shakshooka came originally from North Africa. It is a stew.

Inside the stew there are tomatoes and eggs.

There is also olive oil in it, onions and peppers. It is slow cooked over a low flame and Eliya says it is very delicious even for kids.

Challah is special bread in Israel that people make on Fridays for the special dinner and during holidays. The Challah is a sweet bread.

Falafel

Shawarma Shawarma is a Middle Eastern food made from lamb or some type of meat.

Shawarma was originated in the Ottoman Empire in Turkey, but it was known back then as döner kabab. It dates back to 1326.

Did you know that falafel originally comes from Egypt? It all went back to Christian Copts of Egypt when they weren't allowed to eat meat during the holidays. But the people wanted to get a good snack so they created a ball full of goodness called: ta’amiya that was made out of fava beans. Jewish pioneers took these grateful treats, but made them a little bit different. So that’s how you get these delicious falafel balls.

Israeli schnitzel Israeli schnitzel is made with chicken or turkey breast and on the outside there is a crunchy layer.

The people from Israel moved from Europe back to Israel and took the food recipes with them.

Famous Israeli People Gal Gadot is an Israeli actress and model.

Gal Gadot

At age 18, she was crowned Miss Israel 2004.

She began studying at IBC Herzliya college before pursuing modeling and acting.

Gadot´s first film role came as Gisele Yashar in the Fast and Furious film franchise.

She also got to be Wonder Women.

Portman is best known for her roles as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars. Natalie Portman born in Jerusalem. Short after Natalie Portman was born, she and her family moved to USA.

Natalie Portman’s husband is Benjamin Millepied. Together they have two children, Aleph Portman Millepied and Amalia Millepied. Natalie Portman was born on 9 June, 1981. She is 37 years old.

Benjamin Netanyahu Benjamin Netanyahu is the current Israel Prime Minister. He has been Prime Minister since 2009. Benjamin is Jewish.

His nickname is “Bibi”. He spent his teenager years in the United States. He is the leader of the Likud party.

More Three CIS Students

Netali was born in the U.S and then moved to England.

She has a lot of family in Israel and she visits her family every vacation. Netali loves the beach and the gorgeous weather. When she’s in Israel, she goes surfing and eats shawarma alot. She’s happy that in Israel it is always warm so she can go surfing in January.

One holiday Netali really likes is Passover because it brings her family together. Passover represents the hard work that people had to do many years ago.

Example: a chicken wing that represents how strong they most have been. But they have many more foods there.

This is Niv. He is from Israel, but he was born in Kenya. He lived in Israel for six years. He is missing the heat in Israel. He is going back to Israel 1-2 times a year and he loves swimming in the pool and in the ocean. His favorite food from his culture is falafel. His favorite holiday is Pesach because he does not need to eat sandwiches the whole day. On that holiday, he doesn’t eat flour. One word he would like to teach everyone is Boker Tov = good morning. The hardest part to leave Israel is to leave his friends. One thing that is similar in Denmark to Israel is that in both countries there is a port.

He is going back to Israel this summer. His favorite food from Israel is falafel and he eats it because it is yummy. His favorite holiday is Purim because you get to dress up. If he should teach everyone a word in Hebrew, it would be shalom. It means hello. A thing he thinks is similar to Israel is the meat here.

More Three More CIS Students Tal-ya is 7 years old. She is in 1A. Tal-ya is from Israel. Tal-ya lived in Israel when she was little. She loved living in Israel because it was really hot there. Now her whole family is living there. She misses falafel because she thinks it was really tasty. She ate it most of the times on special events or Saturdays. She goes to Israel about one time a year to visit her friends and family. Her favorite holiday is Pesah because they are looking around for a thing and if they find it they will get a present.

One word that she wanted to share with us was hello and in Hebrew it is shalom. Her hardest part of moving to Denmark was meeting new friends and leaving her friends in Israel. Something that is similar from Denmark and Israel is that in both of the countries people go out even in the winter and swim in the ocean.

Tal-ya

Navo loves falafel because it is tasty, and he eats it almost every day. His favorite holiday is Purim because you can dress up and there is good food. Navo did not like to leave his friends when he moved to Denmark. One thing that is the same from Denmark and Israel is that they both have falafel. One thing you can do in Israel is walk in your shorts because there is warmer weather than here in Denmark.

Navo Eliya is a girl from Israel. She was born in Haifa. The thing Eliya liked most in Israel was that there were nice and beautiful places and really hot. Eliya missing her family and all the beautiful places. Eliya is one time in the year, in Israel. Her favorite thing in Israel is to be with her friends. Eliya’s favorite food is falafel and in her family sometimes they are eating falafel on Friday. Eliya’s favorite holiday is Purim.

They are being dressed up and together they are making a big bowl of candy. One word Eliya would like to teach us is samchu, it means happy. The similar between Denmark and Israel is that there are many beaches. One thing you can't do in other countries but you can in Israel is speak the same language, Hebrew!

Meet Even More CIS Students Daniel comes from Israel. He was born in a little town called Haifa. One thing he really liked to do is go to his school in Israel. Daniel really misses his family. Daniel and his family are going to Israel in the summer. His favorite food is falafel because it’s very crunchy. His favorite holiday is Purim because he can dress up.

One word in Hebrew is low, it means no. Daniel really wants to go back to his Israel school. One thing that's similar is that there are beaches.

Niran

This is Niran. He is from Israel and he was born in Netanya on October 19, 2006. A lot of Niran’s family members are still living in Israel. Niran has lived in Israel for a very big portion of his life and he loves it there.

Niran really misses his friends in Israel and he feels excited to meet them again in the summer. Niran really likes eating Shawarma because it tastes really good. Niran’s favorite holiday is Hanukkah because he likes listening to stories related to Hanukkah. The word that he would like everybody to know is “Shalom” because it means Hello. Niran said he had a very hard time leaving his friends in Israel.

Popular Game in Israel One of the most famous Israeli game is Taki, which is a card game by Shafir Games. The game’s inventor is Haim Shafir. The game is basically like Uno. It was produced in 1983 and is a variant of the Crazy Eights with a special card deck and extended game options.

Meet a CIS Family

Weitzman-Nave Family

My name is Tal Weitzman-Nave, I am the mother of Eliya, Omri and Daniel. I was born and lived in Haifa, Israel for almost all my life.

What I love the most about living in Israel is the feeling of familiarity everywhere you go (almost every person you meet turns out to be a friend of a friend) and the feeling of “mutual guarantee”: You can be sure that in a time of need people will help you - a neighbor or the person you meet in the street. I remember that last year there was a big fire in our city and many houses were damaged. The whole city was helping by contributing whatever necessary, including housing. Eliya and I volunteered in a place where people brought clothes. There were hard times, but we also felt very proud of the way we take care of one another. The thing I miss the most in Israel is my family and close friends.

I also miss the simplicity of making playdates or meeting with friends. You don’t need to schedule weeks ahead. The kids decide they want to meet and just tell the parents to whom they are going today. My kids used to meet friends after school almost every day, and I could just call a friend and tell her I’m “jumping” for a coffee.

I also miss the sun…I haven’t noticed I need it so badly and that it influences my mood so much. Denmark is very different than Israel. I think the weather influence the culture…when it’s hot everyone is outside, playing and meeting each other, and when it’s cold you tend to be at home and are maybe more distant. Sometimes I wish to combine the two cultures- to give more warmth and spontaneity to Denmark and to import some organization and respect for space to Israel.

I think both countries have in common a very good food, in the restaurants and fresh fruits and vegetables in the supermarket. I love the holidays in Israel when all the family is gathering together to celebrate. I mostly like the Shavu’ot holiday, which is also an agriculturist holiday. It celebrates the end of the wheat harvest, so it’s a celebration of the land. We call Israel: land of milk and honey. We usually eat a dairy meal and all the kibutz and villages have farm-festivals. I love the time we live in Denmark. I feel that I learn a new thing every day, and I’m proud of my children who got the language so quickly and made new friends. I also feel thankful for the wonderful friends I found here, at CIS. They make me feel more at home. But, my heart will always be in Israel.

Randi Jensen Cohen’s Family Meet a CIS Family My name is Randi Jensen Cohen.

I was born in Denmark, and my nationality is Danish.

I lived in Israel from when I was 25 years old. In Israel, I studied the culture and language and worked as a teacher and a painter.

I liked living in Israel and I especially enjoyed the warm weather and beautiful sea, beach and just nature in general. Another thing I love about Israel is the food, there is so much delicious food to choose from.

I miss Israel because of the weather and the nature, and also because my husband’s mum and sisters live there.

My favourite things to do in Israel is: 1) To go to the markets and get lots of different impressions of all the great stuff you can find there. 2) To go to the sea. 3) To visit one of the good restaurants or cafes (There is even a chocolate restaurant with chocolate soup!).

My favourite food is Sabih. It’s salad, fried eggplant, potatoes, eggs and dressing in a fresh pita...that is so yummy.

The holiday I enjoy the most is Hanukkah. I love the lights and the sufganiots!

Hebrew is not my mother tongue, but I’ll teach you the word Shalom...it means peace and hello/goodbye.

The hardest part moving to Denmark is the weather...it’s too cold here!☺ One thing you can find in Tel Aviv and not in DK is the combination of city and beach life.

Raviv-O’Regan Family Meet another CIS Family We are the Raviv-O’Regan family – Tal, Nick, Niv (10) and Navo (6). Mum Tal was born and raised in Israel and Dad, Nick, was born in England but raised in South Africa.

Because Tal and Nick work for the United Nations (UN), we lived in many different countries – Tal and Nick actually first met in Angola, in Africa. But we consider Israel our home, or one of our homes. Before moving to Denmark last summer, we lived in Israel for six years and Navo was born there. During that time, we lived in a small village called Motza Illit. It is in the Jerusalem mountains, but close to the road to Tel Aviv. We loved our village because it had a very small and very friendly community that was very close. We knew everyone and the kids could just walk to visit friends without having to arrange for a play date. We lived next to the forest and we used to walk our dogs in the woods, one of our cats used to join us as well. Once a week, every Wednesday afternoon, all the kids of the village would get together for a bonfire and a joint dinner outside. One of the parents would make dough and the kids would make pita bread that we would bake on the fire.

That was a fun tradition we miss. In summer, we had the best time in the swimming pool, with all our friends from the village. Summer in Israel is very hot and nothing is better than messing about in a cool swimming pool with all your friends on a hot summer day, and then taking a break for some ice cream. We enjoy living in Denmark, but there are things we miss. We miss our family and friends, the heat, the food and celebrating some of the holidays. We love our language, Hebrew, and we are very happy to have a chance to speak it with friends in CIS. We receive books in Hebrew from our family in Israel. Meet Some Middle and High School Students Boaz was born in Israel, but his mom is Danish and his dad is from Israel. Boaz lived in Israel until he was three years old, but he does remember playing in the playground. Something that Boaz misses in Israel is the lovely beaches there. Usually Boaz and his family travels back to Israel 3 or 4 times in a year. One of Boaz’s favorite thing to do in Israel is to go to the sandy beaches. He is saying that the water there is so clear and there are big waves there. Boaz likes all of the food in Israel and he doesn't even know what to chows. Boaz’s favorite holiday is Hanukkah. He loves the stories behind the holiday and also the delicious donuts. After they left Israel, they went to Hong Kong and then to Denmark. The hardest part was to leave the family.

He misses the food that they have in Israel: Hummus, Falafel, Shawarma. It's not the same in Europe.

His favorite food from his home county is chicken schnitzel.

Schnitzel usually is made out of veal, but Israelis prefer chicken over other meats.

Passover is Italy's favorite holiday. He loves singing Haggadah with my family.

One word he wanted to share with us is shalom, it means hello and peace, who knew that? He misses the really good food from Israel. In Denmark, he enjoys the weather because it never snows in Israel.
