In 2004 The University of Alabama became only the second university in the United States to hold the license of a full-power commercial television station, significantly expanding the media portfolio of the top-ranked College of Communication and Information Sciences.
In 2006 the University marked another major accomplishment with the completion of the north end zone expansion to BryantDenny Stadium.
Today the Capstone is poised to combine these two assets in the Digital Radio and Television Production Center, a state-of-the-art multimedia facility housed in the expanded BryantDenny Stadium. From this high-visibility location, the Production Center will capture the athletic, cultural and entertainment content from the state’s flagship university.
The Center will house a full range of media assets, providing unparalleled programming and educational opportunities. The 40,000 square foot facility will offer a high-end learning, research and production environment for students, faculty and staff.
Alabama Public Radio Reaching nearly two-thirds of the state, Alabama Public Radio offers a full range of broadcast and online news, music and entertainment programming. Students work with award-winning professional journalists to provide more in-depth local news coverage than any other radio station in Alabama. Center for Public Television and Radio - CPT&R’s Emmy Award-winning producers of documentary and informational programming create content for Alabama Public Television and national public television distribution. Internships and co-operative positions provide students with valuable experiences in a broad range of non-fiction production.
The Production House - The Production House is a fullservice multimedia and video production agency. It offers creative services, remote production packages, 2D and 3D graphics, Final Cut Pro editing, special effects and studio facilities. Applications include training, orientation, education and promotional productions as well as DVD, CD-ROM and Web design. Telecommunication and Film Department - Offering undergraduate and masters’ programs in radio, television, film and other forms of electronic media, students combine hands-on experience in radio and television news, narrative and documentary video with scholarly research on social, psychological, economic and legal aspects of electronic media.
A visible asset. Literally millions of Alabamians will see the Digital Radio and Television Production Center and its programming annually. In addition to the 650,000 fans each season who will pass by its entrance on fall afternoons, the Center will welcome visitors year-round.
Improve the quality of life for millions. Drawing on the vast resources of The University of Alabama, the Center will be the catalyst for disseminating throughout the state a wide variety of cultural, informational, sports and entertainment programming. In the process, Alabama can point the way to a brighter future for one of the most omnipresent features of America’s human landscape, television.
Components include: WUOA/WVUA - With a lowerpower station in Tuscloosa and a full-power transmitter in Birmingham, the University’s super station will reach more than 3 million people. Under the direction of an award-winning professional staff, students gain valuable real life work experience with four daily newscasts and a mounting schedule of entertainment programming.
The
Future
A $50 million asset. The Center will be a significant asset for the people of Alabama and their flagship university. When WUOA’s full-power signal reaches throughout the Birmingham market and cash flow passes the $3.5 million mark, the value of the broadcast operation alone has been estimated to be in excess of $7 million.
