design concept. The bus terminal is the starting and end-point of most passengers’ journey to and from Hamburgs Center. As such it acts as beginning of a staged way. A sculptural cloud like volumen acts as entrance to the infrastructural hub, while a transparent part made of eptf folie, defines a fluent transition to the new bridge and to the dominating body of the car park. A shop is situated beneath the terminals hard core, while the transparent roof offers pleasant lounge like spaces and a snack-bar for persons waiting.

design development. The transaltion of the complex curved shape of the space defining 70m freeform roof into a buildable construction required several translations. The control of geometry was crucial in the design process. The combination of different geometrical descriptions (Subdivison Surface Technology, NURBS and vector descripion) with series of rapid prototyped models turned out to give the right amount of creative freedom and the ability to meet all requirements from functional and construction side.

Parametric Panel Generation. The transformation of double curvature into geometries of less complexity and the invention of construction methods for freeform structures required intensive development and investigations. The project inspired further research on intelligent tiling systems and their possible interference with digital means of construction. The proposal included i.e. customized parametric tools to automatically generate data for the CNC machinery producing the more than 800 different aluminum panels of the wing.

construction The project required a completely 3d oriented planning and construction process. The creation of a reference 3d model turned out to be an invaluable support for communication and could be used by all other partners involved in the further planning and the actual construction. Yet the project showed limits of todays building industry and practice, as tender and construction process didn‘t allow the initially planned communication and digital fabrication structures.
