DIGITAL PRACTICE HANDS ON EXPERIENCE – DIGITAL DESIGN AND PRODUCTION 31.3. / 7.4.2008

Hands on experience – Digital Design and Production Two practice based afternoons in rapid prototyping, 3D printing and laser cutting at CITA (Centre for IT and Architecture), Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture Professional development / kursus for praktiserende arkitekter 31. March 2008 : 13:30 – 16:00 7. April 2008 : 13:30 – 16:00 Holmen, Kunstakadmiets Arkitektskolen – Auditorium 6

CITA (Centre for IT and Architecture) invites practitioners and professionals to explore and learn about digital fabrication techniques and rapid prototyping. In extension of our research exhibition Digital Practice, we invite you to participate in two practice based workshops giving insight into solid modelling techniques, 3D printing and laser cutting. The workshop is practice based and we invite you to bring your design problems for experimentation and troubleshooting. The workshop will give access to the rapid prototyping machinery installed in the Academies workshops as well as laser cutting tools provided by EN Lasers A/S. Interested participants can get more information about CITA, digital fabrication and rapid prototyping on http://cita.karch.dk and are asked to contact Martin Tamke on martin.tamke@karch.dk. Please bring your laptops with your CAD software and design problems. We aim to explore real case studies based on your work. The event is sponsored and supported by senior experts from the following companies who will all be present. EN Lasers A/S – Jens Ulrik Ellegaard Damvig Development – Jesper Damvig tecpart.com – Kurt Pedersen

Program Monday 31. March 2008

3D-Printing 13.30 13:45 14.15 14.45

Introduction Rapid prototyping, modelling and physical visualisation 3d printing - Solid modeling in architectural design process Hands on experience After an introduction to the theory of 3d printing and exposure to a praxis oriented 3d printing process, everybody will have the chance to prepare data for 3d printing. Experts will give support in this process. The event will close with participants producing 3d models, which will be printed until the next venue on Thursday 3. April. Coffee and an introduction to the exhibition digital practice will close the day.

Monday 7. April 2008

2D – Laser cutting 13.30 Introduction 13.45 Digital production – Design to Fabrication, new manufacturing technologies in a digital age 14.15 From 3d to 2d building components - An introduction into sheet production and how to access it from your Design program 14:45 Hands on experience: Experts will give a helping hand when every participant creates data to be cutted in diverse material on the schools lasercutters, one of them courtesy provided by EN lasers /AS. We would like to encourage every participant to bring along 2d and 3d data of ongoing projects, in order to discuss and experience how digital tools can help within design and planning process. Please bring your laptop with your preferred cad and design software installed. Material to cut and the necessary machinery will be provided by the organising parties. If you are interested in participating in the workshop please contact martin. tamke@karch.dk

CITA - Centre for IT and Architecture CITA is an innovative research environment exploring the emergent intersections between architecture and digital technologies. Identifying core research questions into how space and technology can be probed, CITA seeks to investigate how the current forming of a digital culture impacts on architectural thinking and practice. CITA examines how architecture is influenced by new digital design- and production tools as well as the digital practices that are informing our societies culturally, socially and technologically. Using design and practice based research methods; the aim is to explore the conceptualisation, design and realisation of working prototypes. CITA consolidates new collaborations with interdisciplinary partners from the fields of computer graphics, human computer interaction, robotics, artificial intelligence as well as the practice based fields of furniture design, fashion and textiles, industrial design, film, dance and interactive arts. By examining technology transfers between high-innovative industries, that stand on front edge in the development of new digitalised designs- and production tools, it’s our goal to create synergy between the subject’s contemporary reality and its future perspective. www.cita.karch.dk
