Workshop I – Dynamic Descriptions The workshop will concentrate on design strategies based on relationships rather than guiding “Leitbilder”. This understanding will guide a way into parametric modeling and later on into scripting techniques. These are used to create spatial systems which are able to raise a new understanding of architectures concepts and compositions.

Approach The starting of the workshop Dynamic Descriptions resides within the understandings of relations and how and why they change. These dynamic concepts will be notated and transposed into parametric notations. The workshop aims at conducting approaches and concept rather than showing a working solution for a specific topic. We want to investigate and emphasize the self exploration of critical individuals. Output The workshop emphasizes a speculative approach. We will setup dynamic systems that behave and react to outer parameters. These will be visualized in moving pictures rather than drawings. Schedule (more detailed plan on workshop site) In general we start at 9.30h with Tutorials, Pinups in the morning and evening and discussions and hot fixing of problems all day long. 11. Assignment 1- Frameworks Relations are due to change. We will investigate this in the first assignment at scenes showing situations in change. We will investigate the scenes from an analytical point of view, looking at actors or acting objects, supporting or passive elements. We will ask for the underlying reasons and motivations. Output Start with the easiest available technique for your investigation and print by the end of the day a notation system present it.

Approach Concentrate on one relationship. This can be the one of a group of elements, a shift in space, the link between different elements and places. Notate the conditions, whendoes sth happen and why. Ask what are dependencies between different systems? When do they get in touch and why? Notate the possibilities rather than the change over time, show effects and underlying concepts and reasons, sketch the hidden framework, rather than the visible. What kind of interaction takes place? Who is leading who is following? What are the underlying hierarchies? The investigation can take part on a level of persons involved, but as well on the set, the use of camera and intention of the producer etc. Choose the most appropriate way of displaying your findings in a notation system. Create fields of varying states and local notations rather than linear notations. Create your own technique of mappings. The exploration could take part in two steps: 1- Individual take on a specific occurrence 2- Overlay of the occurrences and mapping of their relation Be precise in your drawing. Rather limit the amount of change – show start and endpoint in a refined graphic way. Develop a simple graphical system rather than one off drawing.

Assignment II – Dynamics In the second assignment the notations will get a life. We will extract the parameters and underlying laws and investigate the emergent, when they are used as driving forces. Take the main relations defined in the first assignment and extract and translate their mechanisms and representation. Investigate the emerging new qualities within the interactive drawing and emphasize them in the generations of systems you are building. Overcome the previous assignment. Concentrate on the story you like most. Look in this terms on the drawings made before as toolboxes and pick out styles relation of interest on good will, as you exemplify them in GC. Start with writing up the relation between parameter and representation and create several generations of systems and breed their individual character. Present them in an interactive format as on drawing concentrating on extreme conditions and the explanation of the decision making mechanisms. Presentation format GC and A3 pdfs.

Assignment III – Spatial Behaviour The final assignment deals with the translation of your rule based framework into a spatial system of dependencies, and elements with defined properties. Investigate how the system and its entities behave and how one can take advantage of the emerging new properties. The dynamic properties and the ability to adjust are in the center of the final presentation. The presentation should be as followed: 1) Documentation of the underlying concepts and process 2) Movie showing the interactivity and different states of the model 3) Beautyshots /Renderings) showing the models behavior 4) GC model
