Major General John S. Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a BS degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. When he retired following 32-years of serviece he held the rank of Major General and served as the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, a base with the responsiblity for recruiting and training 22,000 new Marine recruits annually. General Grinalds is a member of the South Carolina selection committee for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust and has served on the board of the George C. Marshall Foundation. He also is a member of the Officer’s Chirstian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars and the Sons of the American Revolution. General Grinalds is married to the former Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, GA and they have three sons, Dummond, Southy and Allen, and one daughter, Kate. They also have six grandchildren. Les Robinson, the winningest baskestball coach in Citadel history, is in his third year as the director of athletics at The Citadel. With nearly four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson in only the fifth athletic director in Citadel history. He continues to serve on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee as he was one of four new members chosen by the 34-member selection panel prior to the 1999-00 season. The Men’s Baskeball Committee is one of the NCAA’s most influential committees, as the group is responsible for the site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships, chooses the at-large teams that will compete in the field of 65, and makes other important decisions regarding Division I men’s basketball. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and recreation from NC State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who live on Sullivan’s Island, have four children: Greg, Robby, Kelly and Barbara, and seven grandchildren.

Golf Offices and Facilities

Vandiver Hall, which opened in the fall of 1991, is a multi-purpose athletic complex that houses the locker rooms, offices and hitting range for The Citadel’s golf program. The 21,645 square foot building, named for Thomas C. Vandiver, a 1929 graduate, is complete with locker rooms and offices for the volleyball, track and field, wrestling, soccer and golf teams.

2001-02 Season Wrap Up and 2002-03 Outlook “We ended the season on a good note by shooting our second best team score of the year in the conference tournament,” stated coach Benji Broadwater. “A lot of our young players got good experience through playing in quite a few tournaments against good competition. Mike Koon, our lone senior, did an outstanding job as team captain, and we are going to miss his leadership and experience. He had one of his best years as a Citadel golfer, which is exactly what you hope for out of your seniors.” Statistically, Ben Twilley and Josh Atkinson shot an average of 79 throughout the fall and spring seasons. Paul Rouleau, Caudle and Brad Pulaski finished the season with an average of 80 while Koon and Chad Lynch rounded out the top seven striking an average of 81. Twilley and Atkinson shot the low rounds of the season of 73 at the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate. The men lose two major components of the 2002 squad in Koon and long time Citadel golf coach Gerald Runey. “Runey has served the school well for over 30 years, and The Citadel and especially the golf team will miss him greatly,” Broadwater added. To combat the loss of Koon and Runey, the Bulldogs have signed Jeff Spencer and Matthew Bryant, a SCJGA “Blade Champion” and a 2002 4A State Runner Up. “Look for our returning players to be much improved after a summer of hard work and dedication to the game,” Broadwater said. “I am really excited about what the future holds for this team.” The women’s team consisted of only two athletes, captain Suzanne Campbell and Mary Nguyen, so they were not able to compete in team competition. However, a steady drop in scoring averages marked the individual performances. “Suzanne and Mary played very well this year,” said Broadwater. “Both players lowered their stoke averages from the fall to the spring, and they were playing their best golf at the end of the year.” A highlight for next fall will be the addition of four new golfers. Kayla Bowsher, Kelley Thorsen, Kristina Romero and Tracy Hancock have signed to swing the irons for the Bulldogs this season. This will mark The Citadel’s first season of a full women’s golf team. “We are excited to get the year started with the addition of our new players, along with the experience and leadership that Suzanne and Mary will bring to the team,” Broadwater added.

The Citadel’s Top Dawgs The Citadel first fielded a golf team in 1933 and by the end of the decade the Bulldogs were the best team in the state. In 1939, co-captain Weldon Doe led The Citadel to its first of three consecutive state championships. Doe captured individual honors at the state tournament. The Citadel has had several very good golf teams, particularly in the 1950s and ‘60s. Three straight years, from 1951-53, the Bulldogs won the prestigious South Carolina Intercollegiate Tournament. The 1951 team won six of eight matches while the 1952 team, paced by Bob Lowry of Huntsville, Ala., and Billy Picard of Charleston, finished third in the Southern Conference. Picard advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Amateur in 1951. In the early 1960s, Dick Horne helped make Citadel teams successful, and after Horne graduated in ’62, the team continued its success by capturing the school’s lone Southern Conference title in 1964. Dick Horne played from 1958-62 under coach Ed Wofford and Monty Rariden. Serving as The Citadel’s captain in 1962, Horne was the Southern Conference Co-Champion shooting a 71 average that year. Since then Horne has competed in eight USGA Championships, won the 1968 Azalea, the 1975 South Carolina Open, two South Carolina Match Championships, the Bermuda Amateur from 1984 to 1986, and participated in five British Senior Opens and five British Amateurs. He served as the president of the South Carolina Golf Association from 1996 to 1998 and was inducted in to the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in 1987. Billy Picard • 1952

The only golfer in The Citadel’s Athletic Hall of Fame is Charles B. Smith, who was on the South Carolina Intercollegiate champion in 1952 and served as the Bulldogs’ co-captain. He was named South Carolina Golfer-of-theYear and participated in the Masters four times. Smith won the Southern Amateur, Eastern Amateur, Carolinas Amateur and was a member of the Walker Cup Team on two occasions.

Dick Horne • 1962

Runey coached golf from 1973-1982 and then again from 1999-2002. Runey taught in the school’s biology department for 32 years and spent 11 years as The Citadel’s Faculty Athletic Representative for 11 years. From 1997 to 1999, he was the president of the Southern Conference’s Executive Committee, which serves as the governing body of the league.
