JODY HUDDLESTON Sitting atop The Citadel’s track and cross-country teams for the 17th season, Jody Huddleston has his eyes focused on the future. Since Huddleston took command he has watched 11 indoor and 12 outdoor track and field records fall. To date, 80 members earned All-Southern conference laurels, 15 of which were individual honorees. The 2002 season was great for the Bulldogs as Huddleston led the men’s outdoor team to the second fourth place finish in four years at its league championships. Huddleston recruited his first female in 1997, Mandy Garcia, who became The Citadel’s first-ever female student-athlete. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the Heptathlon and captured the institution’s first female All-Southern Conference title. In 2000, Huddleston led his first female team to eighth place at the SoCon tournament. Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, OK where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance in 10 years. An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national junior college record in 1979. While at the University of South Alabama, Huddleston established two school records. He graduated in 1979 from the University of South Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. Huddleston and his wife Mary Ellen have two children Ryan (18) and Callie (13).

KRIS KUT

Kris Kut begins his third year as a cross-country and track and field assistant. Like Huddleston, Kut has watched as six men’s records have fallen. During his last three years as a cadet, Kut captured the Southern Conference javelin title. Kut also earned all-conference honors four times and with a throw of 204-10 in 2000 established a new school record. During his final year, Kut earned a spot at the Penn Relays and finished seventh. He took first at several other key meets including the Furman Invitational. The 1999 season was a good year for Kut as he finished second at the SoCon tournament in the javelin and third at the Duke and Clemson Relays. As a freshman Kut represented The Citadel at the Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. A member of The Citadel class of 2000, Kut is currently working towards his Master’s in Physical Education from The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies. He is the son of Andre and Catherine Kut, born January 20, 1978.

LAYNE ANDERSON Layne Anderson begins his first season as an assistant crosscountry/distance coach for the Bulldogs. Prior to The Citadel, Anderson coached the men’s and women’s cross-country teams at Auburn University and assisted with the track squads. During that time he led the Tigers to three NCAA top-10 finishes on the men’s side and four top-20 results for the women. Anderson led seven women to AllAmerica status, while coaching the team to two Southeastern Conference Championships. Under Anderson, the women earned two Southeastern Conference Championships and helped seven earn All-America honors. Anderson spent a year as the assistant men’s coach at Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech he coached six student-athletes to nine All-America laurels and one more to GTE America AllDistrict honors. Anderson earned his B.S. and M.A. in Heath and Physical Education from The Citadel. As a cadet, he was a three-time Academic All-SoCon recipient and Southern Conference Individual Champion. Anderson was a sub four-minute miler and left with 10 school records and three MVP titles. He was named the NASPE and Keith E. Hamilton Outstanding Physical Education Major, earned dean’s list honors and obtained three gold stars. He received the Thomas E. Bagnall Scholarship and was the 1989 recipient of the Outstanding Young Man of America Award.

BRIAN JOHNSON Brian Johnson enters his third year as a Bulldog assistant coach. His primary responsibilities remain with the distance runners. During Johnson’s three-year span, the distance runners have shattered nine school records and set several marks on The Citadel’s top ten list. Prior to joining The Citadel staff, he served as an assistant coach at Furman University from 1998-2000 while earning his M.A. in Health and Exercise Science. In these two years his athletes collected 18 All-Southern Conference honors and set 12 school records. Johnson received his B.S. in Physical Education from Charleston Southern University in 1998. As a member of the track and cross-country teams, he was twice named to the Big South AllAcademic Team and received All-Big South Conference recognition in the 3000m steeplechase. Johnson continues to run in several local road races and this spring will travel north to compete in the 2003 Boston Marathon.

H

MEN’S OUTLOOK

ead coach Jody Huddleston has made the 2003 objective clear. The team finished fourth at the 2002 Southern Conference Championship and expects nothing less this year. In fact, Huddleston anticipates that at least one of the two A-relay teams will qualify for the NCAA regional held the last weekend in May at George Mason University. With the loss of three-time outdoor Southern Conference shot put champion and allconference pick Quentin Armstrong, the team must look to elsewhere for key performances. Graduate assistant Kenyon Doyle returns as a mainstay for the sprint class and will prove to be one of the teams’ greatest assets, participating in 100m, 200m, and both relays. Robert Killian will head the distance runners and show the

newcomers what it takes to compete at the collegiate level. The recent success in the indoor season has Huddleston optimistic about moving outside. The men made indoor track history at The Citadel by scoring 51 points at the SoCon Championships. It is Huddleston’s hope that this spirits remain high and lead to a prosperous season.

Doyle, senior Charles Watson, and junior Alex Prince will headline the sprint class for the Bulldogs this season. The return of Doyle, who placed third in the 100 meters (10.89) and 200 meters (21.62) at the 2002 SoCon Championships, will prove a huge asset again this year as he looks to add to his six all-conference honors and three conference championships. Last season Prince finished second in the 400m (47.84) at the conference championships. He clenched the title at the indoor championships earlier this year and hopes the outdoor season will prove the same. An indoor finalist in the 55m and 400m earlier this year, Watson hopes to carry this momentum to the outdoors. Both relay squads return for another recordbreaking season. Last year the 4x400 team of Doyle, with senior J.T J.T.. Marbur y , and Marbury juniors Marcus Cohen and Prince seized the conference title at JEFF 3:12.70 (the WITHERSPOON second fastest in

school history) and aspire to break the school record from 1986 set at 3:11:63. The 4x100 group rewrote the record book with a 40.79 effort. After last years 0.28 loss to Appalachian, Cohen, Doyle, Marbury and Jeff Witherspoon hope this will be their year in the conference.

Walhalla, his resume includes the 2001 AA state champion title in the 400IH. He was also a state qualifier at the 100HH. Look for him to score well and make things happen throughout the season.

Middle Distance/ Distance

Killian will be the one to watch in the distance class for the Bulldogs again this year. After placing seventh in the 5,000 meters last season 15:37.01, Huddleston expects great things from this young man- “scoring first and second several times this season.” Killian wants his fall and winter achievements to continue into the spring. Cross-country proved positive earlier this year as 50 seconds dropped off his 10k time. This was the third fastest time ever run on a 10k NCAA district course. Freshman Matt P Power ower should have tabs kept on him as he may surprise some people later in the season. Once sophomore Nick Gastley becomes healthy, Huddleston hopes points will be earned in the 5,000 and 10,000m. ough and Brad Seniors Tony Kimbr Kimbrough Perricelli and newcomer Marcus Butler all look to make their marks at the middle distance. Huddleston hopes that Butler will make an immediate impact on the scoreboard and in the conference. In the 800m, Kimbrough and Perricelli both return with high expectations from Huddleston. Injuries have plagued sophomore Vince Bechtal all year, but he should be ready for the mile by the conference tournament.

Hurdles

Sophomore Matt Jones returns to the track with freshman Thomas Cummings Cummings, who joins the ranks with a strong track background from Wallaha, SC. Well decorated in the 400IH at

All-conference honoree, junior Travis T Taylor aylor, aylor returns as the mainstay for The Citadel. With a 66 high jump, Huddleston hopes that Taylor’s work during the off and indoor season will prove valuable. With the graduation of Scooter Johnson, Marcus Cater is the main act for the Bulldogs in the long and triple jump. Carter must familiarize the newcomers Julius Hunter and Chris Surface with the expectations at the college level.

Vaults

Steve Kleppin from Sumerset, NJ begins his career at The Citadel as the men’s pole vautler. A true freshman walk-on, Kleppin reached 1.95m at the southern conference and looks to improve this season.

Weight Events

Recent years have been kind to the Bulldog throwers. Armstrong has led the way for the past four years, but now it is time for his understudies to begin to make an impact in the league and the newcomers to build for the future. Junior Chris Franklin will become the Bulldogs number one discus thrower and freshman Chris Petty will take over shot put responsibilities. Carter returns as the Bulldogs number one javelin man as he threw a 56.10m to secure second at the outdoor SoCon championships. Currently ranked fourth in The Citadel’s history, Huddleston expects great things from this young man as the season gets underway.

Multi

Once again Taylor will compete for the Bulldogs in the multi-events this year. With his long jump (6.07-20-0.25) and his high jump (1.92-6-3.5) in the decathlon, new records were set in 2002. Junior Hunter Reid and sophomore Andrew McCollough round out the line-up and look to improve on last year’s marks.

Senior Manda Orson leads the distance pack with sophomore Laura Gisinger Gisinger, and White to round out the line-up. Olivia Perr y-Smith set the school’s steeple erry record last season at the Southern Conference outdoor championships with a time of 12:20.21- good enough to secure seventh place. Huddleston hope y-Smith break her record this to see Perr erry year.

Jumps and Throws The pole vault will be trusted to the young and talented newcomer Alexis Gonzales Gonzales. Already, C ATRINA M OORE Gonzales rewrote the indoor pole vault record at 8-0. Impressed by Gonzales performance during the indoor season, Huddleston hopes to see even better things outside. The shot, discus, hammer and javelin are left to seniors Moore and Godfrey Godfrey. Moore currently holds the indoor and outdoor shot put records at 38-5 and 387.75 respectively. Earlier this year she clinched third in her flight in the weight throw at the Southern Conference indoor championships at 12.37m.

MAJOR GENERAL JOHN GRINALDS USMC RETIRED THE CITADEL PRESIDENT WEST POINT ‘59 Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. With family roots deep in the Eastern Shore of Virginia, General Grinalds was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1938. His family moved to Macon, Georgia, when he was ten years old. By the time he graduated from high school, General Grinalds had become a class officer, an all-state football player, an honor student and colonel of the Junior ROTC unit. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a BS degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. Serving with the Department of Defense Systems Analysis Office during the late 1960s, General Grinalds became a manpower planning analyst — a field in which he developed an expertise used throughout his military career. General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he was awarded a Silver Star for heroism in

combat. From 1982 to 1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicate negotiations between NATO and the French military. Because of his outstanding service there, French President François Mtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an American colonel. In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadier general before beginning an assignment serving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted to major general and, in 1989, became the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster of one of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served until coming to The Citadel. General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, in 1962. They have four children. General Grinalds is active in a number of organizations. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Senior Board of Directors of the Brasenose College Charitable Foundation, a trustee of Porter-Gaud School, and a member of the Executive Board of the Coastal Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a former trustee of Hampden-Sydney College and the Madeira School and has served as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina state selection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.

LES ROBINSON DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS NORTH CAROLINA STATE ‘65 Les Robinson, a virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, begins his third year as the Director of Athletics at The Citadel. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. During the past two years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. He hired the school’s first senior woman administrator, taken measures to improve the department’s weight room, and is personally spearheading the revamping of Johnson Hagood Stadium. Last year alone, The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 198485 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. He resurrected the ETSU program that won just seven games in 1987 to its finest run of basketball and athletics successes in school history. Robinson guided the Buccaneers to two NCAA Tournament appearances (1989 and 1990), a pair of Southern Conference Tournament championships (1989 and 1990) and was named Southern Conference and Tennessee Coach-of-the-Year following the 1990 campaign. The Buccaneers also produced record levels of departmental revenue while he served the dual role of head basketball coach and athletics director. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in

Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson returned to Raleigh and his alma mater prior to the 1990-91 basketball campaign to coach the Wolfpack, replacing Jim Valvano. Robinson promptly guided N.C. State to a 20-11 record and NCAA Tournament appearance while earning the NABC’s District Coach-of-the-Year honor in his first season atop the Wolfpack program. His teams also enjoyed commendable academic success during the decade while graduation rates and grade point averages increased and the academic qualifications of incoming freshmen improved. He also posted the best career winning percentage against North Carolina of any ACC coach during his tenure. As athletic director at N.C. State from 1996-2000, Robinson oversaw a department with an operating budget of $25 million and sent 11 teams to postseason play. During his final year, the department witnessed a $1.1 million surplus. In addition, the cumulative grade point average of athletes at the ACC institution exceeded that of the general student body. Robinson and the N.C. State family also witnessed the opening of the Entertainment and Sports Arena, a 19,700-seat facility which serves as the home of the Wolfpack men’s basketball program and the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League. As an undergraduate at N.C. State, Robinson served as team captain and led the Wolfpack freshman basketball squad in scoring in 1961 while playing for legendary coach Everett Case. He went on to earn two varsity letters with the Wolfpack in 1963 and 1964, spent the 1965 season as a student assistant coach and was promoted to graduate assistant status in 1966. He departed N.C. State after the 1966 season to coach at Cedar Key High School in Cedar Key, FL where he went 41-9 in two seasons. He then made a one-season assistant coaching stop at Western Carolina where he earned his Masters’ degree before joining The Citadel’s coaching staff prior to the 1969-70 campaign Robinson is in his third year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee as he was one of four new members chosen by the 34-member selection panel in 1999. The Basketball Committee is one of the NCAA’s most influential committees, as the group is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Additionally, it chooses the at-large teams that competes in the field of 64, and makes many important decisions regarding the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. He also served a pair of stints with USA Basketball as head coach of the South squad in the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, TX and as an assistant coach to Bobby Cremins at the 1988 World Qualifying Games in Mexico City. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island, have four children: Greg, Robby, Kelly and Barbara; and seven grandchildren: L.G. Robinson, Savannah Graves, Lily Graves, James Graham Boyd, Hugh Bissell Graves, Mary Emma Graves, and Charles Simon Boyd.
