2003-2004 TRACK & CROSS COUNRTY

JODY HUDDLESTON At the helm of The Citadel’s track and cross-country teams, Jody Huddleston has his eyes focused on the future. Since Huddleston took command 18 years ago he has watched 11 indoor and 12 outdoor track and field records fall. To date, 150 members earned AllSouthern conference laurels, 43 of which were individual champions. The 2002-03 season was great for the Bulldogs as Huddleston led the men’s outdoor team to its second fourth-place finish in four years at its league championships. The men’s 4x100m relay team, comprised of seniors Kenyon Doyle, J.T. Marbury, Charles Watson and Jeff Witherspoon represented the Bulldogs at the Penn Relays and took The Citadel’s third consecutive title in the event. Huddleston recruited his first female in 1997, Mandy Garcia, who became The Citadel’s first-ever female student-athlete. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institution’s first female All-Southern Conference title. In 2000, Huddleston led his first female team to eighth place at the SoCon tournament and most recently saw the successful performances of freshmen Clara Crossman and Laura Hewston as they recorded some of The Citadel’s best times at the 5K and 6K distance. Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, OK, where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance in 10 years. An all-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national, decathlon long jump, Junior College record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama and established two school records. Huddleston graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and earned a master’s degree two years later in education from the same institution. Huddleston and his wife, Mary Ellen, have two children, Ryan (19) and Callie (14).

KRIS KUT Kris Kut, a member of The Citadel class of 2000, begins his third year as a cross country and track and field assistant. Like Huddleston, Kut has watched as six men’s records have fallen. During his years as a cadet at The Military College of South Carolina, Kut captured the Southern Conference javelin title three times, while earning allconference accolades four times. With a throw of 204-10 in 2000, he established a new school record. As a senior, Kut earned a spot at the Penn Relays and finished seventh. He took first at several other key meets including the Furman Invitational. The 1999 season was a good year for Kut as he finished second at the SoCon tournament in the javelin and third at the Duke and Clemson Relays and as a freshman. Kut also earned the opportunity to represent The Citadel at the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. A member of The Citadel class of 2000, Kut also earned his Master’s in Physical Education from The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies in 2003. Kut, born January 20, 1978, married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, VA this past summer.

BRIAN JOHNSON Brian Johnson enters his fourth year as a Bulldog assistant coach where his primary responsibilities remain with the distance runners. During Johnson’s four-year span, the distance runners have shattered nine school records and set several marks on The Citadel’s top-ten lists. Prior to joining The Citadel staff, he served as an assistant coach at Furman University from 1998-2000 while earning his M.A. in Health and Exercise Science. In these two years his athletes collected 18 all-Southern Conference honors and set 12 school records. Johnson received his B.S. in Physical Education from Charleston Southern in 1998. As a member of the track and cross country teams, he was twice named to the Big South all-Academic Team and received all-Big South Conference recognition in the 3000m steeplechase. Johnson continues to run in several local road races and last spring he traveled north to compete in the 2003 Boston Marathon and married the former Emily Eades of Louisville, KY this past summer

2003-2004 TRACK & CROSS COUNRTY A LOOK AT MEN’S TRACK & FIELD The 2003 campaign continued one of the more successful runs in recent Bulldog track history capturing the 4x100 Penn Relay trophy en route to the third consecutive second-place finish at

will mentor a talent packed, young team, as he is poised to repeat as the 400-meter champion in the Southern Conference. In order to remain atop the conference in the indoor and outdoor 4x400 relay, freshmen Dayson, Pressley and Wright will need to contribute without delay. ALEX P RINCE Senior Marcus Cohen set his sights on being tabbed to the 4x400-meter relay squad with Prince while surpassing his personal-best of 49.13 in the 400-meter. The Bulldogs face a difficult task as they must replace the entire 4x100-meter relay squad that won three Penn Relays championships, reset the school record, and secured three Southern Conference honors.

the Southern Conference Championships.

Throws:

The men have their work cut out as they lose all but one member of the 4x100 and 4x400-meter squads to graduation. “We will miss Kenyon Doyle, J.T. Marbury, Jeff Witherspoon and Charles Watson,” remarked head coach Jody Huddleston, “and the points they have scored over the past four years.” This years’ squad begins a new cycle with freshman competing for four years. Thomas Pressley, Cameron Easley, Curtis Dayson and Quintin Wright will most likely develop into the same type team as Doyle, Marbury, Witherspoon and Watson. Coaches hope this squad will have similar results.

Senior Chris Franklin, along with sophomore Chris Petty, will assume larger shot, discus and hammer throwing responsibilities. This duo should turn a few heads in the conference. The senior trio of Marcus Carter, Travis Taylor and Hunter Reid will launch the javelin since junior Erick Austin will be missing from the

Sprints: People may speculate who the Bulldogs will turn to, as large holes are left in The Citadel slate. Alex Prince, a senior from Atlanta, GA, will shoulder the brunt of these pressures. He WWW. CITADELSPORTS. COM

CROSS COUNTRY IN REVIEW The 2003 cross country season was as much about who was injured as it was about who ran well for the Bulldogs.

Jumps/Multi-Events: Taylor will handle high jump duties along with the nine other events encompassed in the decathlon. After last years second-place finish, he hopes to remain among the SoCon’s elite. Taylor’s training partner, Reid, will attempt to rise in the conference standings as he trained and improved dramatically during the offR O B E R T KILLIAN season. With Taylor as the Bulldog’s strong hold in the high jump, seniors Demaj Wiley and Marcus Carter will fill the triple jump slate.

On the men’s side, The Citadel’s number two and three runners were injured before the first meet. Junior Nick Gastley suffered a seasonending injury early on, while junior Vince Bechtel returned to the slate to make a valiant attempt at the Southern Conference championships as the Bulldogs’ fourth runner. Team captain and number one runner senior Robert Killian ran well at the end of the season, but fell short of his personal expectations. Junior Marc Quesenberry had his best season as ROBERT KILLIAN a Bulldog, setting a personal best of 26:50 at the Winthrop Invitational. Quesenberry also stepped up to help mentor a very talented group of freshmen in Matt Holmes, William Wilson and Charles Kutz. All three freshmen made huge strides during the season and Huddleston and his staff are excited about the future of Citadel cross country.

Distance: Senior Robert Killian will pace the distance category in his final season with the Bulldogs. Killian is primed for a superb final season after performing well in the fall on the trails. Killian will be supported in the steeplechase, 5,000and 3,000-meters by juniors Nick Gastley, Marc Quesenberry and freshmen Matt Holmes, Will Wilson and Charles Kutz. Great results could be seen in the middle distances as senior Tony Kimbrough, junior Vince Bechtel and sophomore Marcus Butler will participate in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter.

MARC

Assistant coach Brian Johnson continues to recruit a talented class of distance runners. His efforts will be seen next season as Johnson will now have a squad consisting of his recruits from seniors to freshmen.

CROSS COUNTRY IN REVIEW Assistant coach Brian Johnson brought in The Citadel’s most talented group of women runners to date. Along with the men’s team, the women had their own battle with injury. Freshman Laura Hewston proved her abilities immediately, as she ran in the number one spot from day one. Unfortunately Hewston suffered a hamstring injury that hindered her the last three meets. Hewston became theM Bulldog’s C ATRINA OORE second fastest female 5K distance runner at The Citadel Invitational. Her personal-best of 19:43, run at The Citadel Invitational, gave her the fourth fastest cross country time ever. In the same race, Hewston became the second fastest female distance runner at The Citadel.

Distance: Laura Gisinger returns as the Bulldogs topdistance runner and will get some much needed and deserved help from a gifted group of freshmen in Laura Hewston, Amanda Rawl, and Clara Crossman. These freshmen proved their talent and made an immediate impact during the 2003 cross country season. Huddleston expects them to only get better during the indoor and outdoor track seasons as he believes The Citadel has not seen its ultimate potential.

Freshman Clara Cross- LAURA GISINGER man missed the first few meets due to an injury and upon her return, ran a personal best of 19:51. This gave her the seventh fastest time in Bulldog history. In the same race, Crossman became The Citadel’s fifth fastest female. Hewston and Crossman became two of only six females in Citadel cross country history to run a 5K in under 20 minutes. The number three runner, freshman Amanda Rawl, also struggled with an injury for almost the entire season. Rawl ran 21:14 at South Carolina and then 21:17 at Davidson, which is one of the more difficult courses in the conference, before she suffered an injury. Two walk-on seniors, Lidia Murillo and Elizabeth Harris, who knocked two minutes off their 5K times, along with junior Laura Gisinger rounded out the top six on this year’s team.

awarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. From 1982 to 1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicate negotiations between NATO and the French military. Because of his outstanding service there, French President François Mtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an American colonel. In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadier general before beginning an assignment serving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted to major general and, in 1989, became the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster of one of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served until coming to The Citadel. General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, in 1962. They have four children. General Grinalds is active in a number of organizations. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Senior Board of Directors of the Brasenose College Charitable Foundation, a trustee of Porter-Gaud School, and a member of the Executive Board of the Coastal Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a former trustee of Hampden-Sydney College and the Madeira School and has served as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina state selection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.

Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. With family roots deep in the Eastern Shore of Virginia, General Grinalds was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1938. His family moved to Macon, Georgia when he was ten years old. By the time he graduated from high school, General Grinalds had become a class officer, an all-state football player, an honor student and colonel of the Junior ROTC unit. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a BS degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. Serving with the Department of Defense Systems Analysis Office during the late 1960s, General Grinalds became a manpower planning analyst — a field in which he developed an expertise used throughout his military career. General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he was

2003-2004 TRACK & CROSS COUNRTY LES R OBINSON D IRECTOR OF ATHLETICS NORTH CAROLINA STATE ‘65 Les Robinson, a virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, begins his third year as the Director of Athletics at The Citadel. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous

seasons as an assistant coach. During the past two years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. He hired the school’s first senior woman administrator, taken measures to improve the department’s weight room, and is personally spearheading the revamping of Johnson Hagood Stadium. Last year alone, The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 197879 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-theYear in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-theYear in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-1420-27) each year. He resurrected the ETSU program that won just seven games in 1987 to its finest run of basketball and athletics successes in school history. Robinson guided the Buccaneers to two NCAA Tournament appearances (1989 and 1990), a pair of Southern Conference Tournament championships (1989 and 1990) and was named Southern Conference and Tennessee Coach-of-theYear following the 1990 campaign. The Buccaneers also produced record levels of departmental revenue while he served the dual role of head basketball coach and athletics director. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league

coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson returned to Raleigh and his alma mater prior to the 1990-91 basketball campaign to coach the Wolfpack, replacing Jim Valvano. Robinson promptly guided N.C. State to a 20-11 record and NCAA Tournament appearance while earning the NABC’s District Coach-of-theYear honor in his first season atop the Wolfpack program. His teams also enjoyed commendable academic success during the decade while graduation rates and grade point averages increased and the academic qualifications of incoming freshmen improved. He also posted the best career winning percentage against North Carolina of any ACC coach during his tenure. As athletic director at N.C. State from 1996-2000, Robinson oversaw a department with an operating budget of $25 million and sent 11 teams to postseason play. During his final year, the department witnessed a $1.1 million surplus. In addition, the cumulative grade point average of athletes at the ACC institution exceeded that of the general student body. Robinson and the N.C. State family also witnessed the opening of the Entertainment and Sports Arena, a 19,700seat facility which serves as the home of the Wolfpack men’s basketball program and the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League. As an undergraduate at N.C. State, Robinson served as team captain and led the Wolfpack freshman basketball squad in scoring in 1961 while playing for legendary coach Everett Case. He went on to earn two varsity letters with the Wolfpack in 1963 and 1964, spent the 1965 season as a student assistant coach and was promoted to graduate assistant status in 1966. He departed N.C. State after the 1966 season to coach at Cedar Key High School in Cedar Key, FL where he went 41-9 in two seasons. He then made a one-season assistant coaching stop at Western Carolina where he earned his Masters’ degree before joining The Citadel’s coaching staff prior to the 1969-70 campaign Robinson is in his third year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee as he was one of four new members chosen by the 34-member selection panel in 1999. The Basketball Committee is one of the NCAA’s most influential committees, as the group is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Additionally, it chooses the at-large teams that competes in the field of 64, and makes many important decisions regarding the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. He also served a pair of stints with USA Basketball as head coach of the South squad in the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, TX and as an assistant coach to Bobby Cremins at the 1988 World Qualifying Games in Mexico City. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island, have four children: Greg, Robby, Kelly and Barbara; and seven grandchildren: L.G. Robinson, Savannah Graves, Lily Graves, James Graham Boyd, Hugh Bissell Graves, Mary Emma Graves, and Charles Simon Boyd.
