2004-05 Season Preview The Citadel rifle team is looking forward to another successful year as they begin the 2004-05 season. The Bulldogs returned to varsity status four years ago after being a club sport for more than ten years. The graduation of senior Keith Kacmar, the top SEARC shooter for four years, should not greatly effect the Dogs’ performance with the return of top female shooter junior Amara Atella and the addition of five freshman. “I expect several of them to be first team shooters this season,” head coach William Smith said of the freshmen shooters. The Citadel also returns seniors Jason Dickinson and Sarah Deuschle, juniors Vanessa Swan and Evan Rishel and sophomore Team Manager, Stanley Quarles. The average winning score in the SEARC over the last five seasons increased by over 40 points. This season, the conference changed the match format to 60 shots from 40 and dropped the finals match. Last year, North Carolina State and Birmingham Southern were extremely tough competitors, and coach Smith does not expect that to be any different this season. “We should be a good match-up with most of the teams this year with several of our freshmen and all of the upperclassmen currently shooting above the average high score from last season,” remarked Coach Smith. At a SEARC match held at the end of last season in Milledgeville, Ga., The Citadel and NC State both tied for first place. After counting center shots, the Dogs came out on top of NC State with Birmingham Southern following close behind in third place. The Bulldogs will host two home matches this season, the SEARC 5/NCAA Sectional and the Austin Peay match will be held upstairs in Deas Hall at The Citadel.

meet the bulldogs Head Coach Bill SMith William C. Smith is a native Charlestonian who has made great strides with the rifle program, moving it from a club sport back to an intercollegiate sport in 2001. Smith, 55, has guided The Citadel’s rifle team the past five years and serves as both the men’s and women’s head coach. Under the direction of Smith, the Bulldogs finished second in the SEARC in 2004, and ended the 2003 season as runner-up in the conference with five Academic All-American shooters. The Citadel had a one loss season and conference championship in 2002. The 2001 season marked the first time the team won the SEARC Championships since it was reinstated as a varsity sport. The Citadel’s last championship was in 1999. Also in 2001, Smith led the Bulldog shooters to individual and team NCAA sectionals, competing against teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Smith’s goal for the team is to become an annual participant in postseason play. To help reach this goal, The Citadel is in the preconstruction phase of a new indoor shooting range facility. The range will have 16 points for smallbore/center fire at 25 yards and 16 points for air-rifles at 10 meters. The air range will feature electronic scoring systems. Current plans are to start hosting an All-Academy Rifle and Pistol match on an annual basis and to bid on hosting the NCAA rifle championships.

The Collegiate Sectionals NCAA Qualifier is a match that falls within a 4-5 day window. The top-8 scores from smallbore and the top-8 from air rifle from each sectional around the nation advance to the NCAA Championship. Scores falling from nine to 25 are used as the final top-25 ranking in the NCAA.

The Bulldogs in 2003-2004

The Bulldogs kicked off the 2003-2004 season with a win over rival North Carolina State to clench first place in the opening SEARC match of the year held at North Georgia College. The team also finished in second place that same weekend in an NCAA match. The very next weekend, The Citadel went head to head with N.C. State and took the air rifle competition with a final score of 1493-1492, but dropped the small bore match to the Wolfpack 22271993. In a single match against Wofford, the women’s team defeated both Wofford and The Citadel men. The girls finished with 1500 points out of 1600 over the men’s second place finish of 1475 and Wofford’ last place score of 1187. The Bulldogs went on to take first in the SEARC 3 match after first ending in a tie with N.C. State. It took a tie breaker to determine the winner that ended with The Citadel on top 58-53. The remainder of the 2003-2004 season ended with another win over Wofford and then a second place finish in the SEARC 4 match. The team dropped to second place overall in the conference with one SEARC match left before the championships. In the NCAA sectional/SEARC 5 match, Senior Keith Kacmar fired a match high 388 as The Citadel totaled 1500 points en-rout to a first-place finish. The win sealed at least a second-place season finish for the Cadet marksmen in the South Eastern Air Rifle Conference. In the final match of the 2003-2004 season, The Citadel Women’s Rifle Team defeated the Austin Peay Women’s Rifle Team and the Citadel Men’s Team. The Citadel women scored 1478 to 1417 for APU and 1407 for the Citadel men out of a possible 1600. The Bulldogs said goodbye to only one graduating senior going into the 2004-2005 season, but Keith Kacmar was consistently one of the top shooters for The Citadel. In his four years with the squad, Kacmar led The Citadel to a SEARC Championship in 2001 and was twice named Bulldog-of-theWeek for his efforts. Kacmar continually posted scores in the 370-380’s before the format was changed for this season. This year, the team again has only one senior and will have to look to Jason Dickinson and top shooter junior Amara Atella to be leaders for the 2004-2005 shooters.
