The Citadel’s Top Dogs The Citadel first fielded a golf team in 1933 and by the end of the decade the Bulldogs were the best team in the state. In 1939, co-captain Weldon Doe led The Citadel to its first of three consecutive state championships. Doe captured individual honors at the state tournament.
Billy Picard • 1952
The Citadel has had several very good golf teams, particularly in the 1950s and ‘60s. Three straight years, from 1951-53, the Bulldogs won the prestigious South Carolina Intercollegiate Tournament. The 1951 team won six of eight matches while the 1952 team, paced by Bob Lowry of Huntsville, Ala., and Billy
Picard of Charleston, finished third in the Southern Conference. Picard advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Amateur in 1951. In the early 1960s, Dick Horne helped make Citadel teams successful, and after Horne graduated in ’62, the team continued its success by capturing the school’s lone Southern Conference title in 1964. Dick Horne played from Charles Smith • 1952 1958-62 under coach Ed Wofford and Monty Rariden. Serving as The Citadel’s captain in 1962, Horne was the Southern Conference CoChampion shooting a 71 average that year. Since then Horne has competed in eight USGA Championships, won the 1968 Azalea, the 1975 South Carolina Open, two South Carolina Match Championships, the Bermuda Amateur from 1984 to 1986, and participated in five British Senior Opens and five British Amateurs. He served as the president of the Eddie Piedmont • 1987 South Carolina

Dick Horne • 1962 He was named South Carolina Golfer-of-theYear and participated in the Masters four times. Smith won the Southern Amateur, Eastern Amateur, Carolinas Amateur and was a member of the Walker Cup Team on two occasions. Runey coached golf from 1973-1982 and then again from 1999-2002. Runey taught in the school’s biology department for 32 years and spent 11 years as The Citadel’s Faculty Athletic Representative for 11 years. From 1997 to 1999, he was the president of the Southern Conference’s Executive Committee, which serves as the governing body of the league. In the Fall of 2000 Gerald Runey • 2001 Suzanne Campbell became the first women’s golfer at The Citadel. A member of the class of 2004, Ms. Campbell is currently attending the Charleston School of Law.

MGen. John S. Grinalds, USMC Ret. President
Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. With family roots deep in the Eastern Shore of Virginia, General Grinalds was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1938. His family moved to Macon, Georgia, when he was ten years old. By the time he graduated from high school, General Grinalds had become a class officer, an all-state football player, an honor student and colonel of the Junior ROTC unit. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a BS degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he was awarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. From 1982 to 1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicate negotiations between NATO and the French military. Because of his outstanding service there, French President François Mtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an American colonel. In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadier general before beginning an assignment serving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted to major general and, in 1989, became the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster of one of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served until coming to The Citadel. General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, in 1962. They have four children. General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a former trustee of Hampden-Sydney College and the Madeira School and has served as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina state selection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.
Les Robinson Athletic Director At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson is in his fifth year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coachof-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
