Women’s Track & Field Outlook The 2005 women’s f track season is expected to be as good as 2004 and should be much better as the Bulldogs continue to improve and expect another assault on the record book. The Citadel only lost one senior, Rose Rodriguez, but she will be missed as she ran a very strong leadoff leg on both relay teams last year. On the up side, the track and field squad has a very good group of ladies returning and a strong group of freshmen that should make an impact right away. Seniors Manda Rogers, Mary Thornton and Kelly Pesterfield will lead this year’s team of very young and talented athletes. Mary Thornton

800 / 1500: Sophomore Laura Hewston broke two indoor records last season and is looking to add a few outdoor events this year. Hewston established herself as the number one distance runner as a freshman and will lead a group of middle distance runners that include Mary Thornton and Manda Rogers in the 800 meters. Beaufort high school star freshman Wilma Harp will also run the mile/ 1500m with Hewston and they should push each other all year. Freshman Felipa Reyes will push Thornton and Rogers and also drop down and run the 400 meters.

5,000 meters / Steeplechase:

100 / 400 / Hurdles: Junior Miriam Crawford returns with the fastest sprint times from last year and has a personal-best of 13.00 in the 100 meters and 26.07 in the 200m. She will be challenged by freshman Jodi Whittle from Jamaica who posted high school times of 12.00 in the 100m and 25.4 in the 200m. Freshmen Christine DeVasto and Allison Miriam Taylor will also add to Crawford the Bulldogs’ sprint depth while the 4 x 100 relay should be much improved. Montair Booker returns for her junior season after sitting out a year. Twin sister Monesha Booker has transferred to South Carolina to finish her degree.

Amanda Rawl

Sophomore Amanda Rawl will carry most of the load in the longer distances, which include the 3k and 5k races. Rawl had a very good cross-country season this year after getting injured her freshman year.

Throws: Sophomore Stephanie McNeill broke three school records her freshman year and is hoping to Stephanie McNeill add the weight indoors and the hammer outdoor. Both McNeill and Hewston are Stratford high school graduates and have been wonderful additions to the team. This year the Cadets have added a third member to the team from Stratford in 2

Women’s Cross Country In Review freshman Latosha Sanders, who was an All-State discus thrower for the Knights. The Bulldogs will also get some help from freshmen Jenifer Moore, Laura Phelan, Alicia Lau.

Amanda Rawl stayed healthy and performed well this last year. The addition of freshmen Wilma Harp and Christine DeVasto should help the women’s team to continue to improve.

Jumps/ Heptathlon:

“The Citadel invitational was our best effort of the year,” said head coach Jody Huddleston. “Wilma and Christine both ran under 21 minutes and Amanda ran a personal best of 21:06.”

Kelly Pesterfield

Senior Kelly Pesterfield will long jump again this season, as will freshman Allison Taylor. Allison was also a triple jumper in high school and The Citadel has yet to have an established record in that event. Latosha will throw the discus as well as learn several new events while participating in the pentathlon indoors and the heptathlon outdoors. Junior Alexis Gonzalez will lead the Bulldogs in the pole vault and run sprints for the 2005 season.

Women’s 2004 Cross Country In Review The women’s cross country team concluded their 2004 campaign at the NCAA Southeast Regional as they wrapped up another year. The 2004 season marked a year of new school records and personal best times for the Bulldogs.

Laura Hewston

Sophomore Laura Hewston led the women’s team as she showed much improvement. Hewston set school records in 2004 as she ran a 5K time of 19:08 at The Citadel Invitational, as well as turning in a 23:55 time in the 6K at this past year’s NCAA Southeast Regional. Both Hewston and sophomore

A trip to the Furman Invitational also highlighted the Bulldog’s schedule as they competed on one of the toughest courses in the Southern Conference. “I was very pleased with senior Manda Rogers running 22:08 at the Furman Invitational,” commented Huddleston. “She had her best time of the year on the hardest course that we ran.”

Manda Rogers

Both Rogers and fellow senior Mary Thornton ran cross country for the first time this season. “We were in a position were we needed some depth and they both wanted to help in any way they could,” remarked Huddleston. “With our top four runners being sophomores and freshmen, I think we are finally able to have a group of runners that we can recruit towards an effort to show more and more success.”

Men’s Track & Field Outlook The 2004 track season had its ups and downs for the men’s program. As always, The Citadel lost some very important members of the team to graduation. The combination of Alex Prince, Robert Killian, Marcus Cohen, Chris Franklin, Tony Kimbrough, Travis Taylor and Hunter Reid had a hand in scoring 59 of 89 points at both the indoor and outdoor championships. It is probably impossible to replace senior talent with freshman talent but the Bulldogs had a good recruiting class that will help in the future. Another low point was not getting the baton around the track at the conference championships in the 4 x 100 relay. But the Cadets bounced back the next week in winning the military 4 x 100 at the Penn Relays for the fourth consecutive year. With three freshmen and a senior on that team, The Citadel was very fortunate and was able to stay focused in front of such a huge crowd at the Penn Relays. The 2005 track and field squad will depend heavily on several members of the team to pick up were they left off last season:

100 / 400 / Hurdles: Sophomore Thomas Pressley, who will lead Thomas Pressley a young group of sprinters reached the finals last year in both the 100 and 200 meters at the conference championships. Sophomores Quintin Wright and Cameron Easley should play a much larger roll this year and are the other two members of the 4 x 100 team that won the military relay at the Penn Relays. Freshman Jonathan Vallejo will compete for a spot on the relay along with several upperclassmen. The 400 meters will be wide open for the Bulldogs this year. Prince was such a strong competitor and it will be hard to find someone to fill his shoes. Freshman Chris Seabold will run the 400m and

add depth to the 4 x 400 relay team. Junior Thomas Cummings has finished fourth in the 400 hurdles the past two years at the conference championships. Cummings has his sights set on breaking the school record of 52.91 set in 1990 by Anthony Brevard, as well as a conference title. Freshman 400m hurdler, Dan Sagmiller, will train with Cummings and should be able to help push Cummings toward the school record.

800 / 1500: Junior Marcus Butler is ready for a big year on the track. Butler ran cross-country this year to prepare for track season and is much stronger than in 2004. Nagging injuries the past two Marcus years has hampered Butler Butler, but the Bulldogs hope he has been able to put those injuries behind him as he has the potential to post very fast 800-meter times. Senior Vince Bechtel, who will also run the 800m and the mile, missed the majority of cross country season with an injury and spent most of the Fall getting ready for track season. Sophomores Will Wilson and Charles Kutz will run the 1500/mile this year and run the longer legs of some of the relays, such as distance medley. Kutz had a very solid freshman year and is much stronger this year. Wilson, who played soccer in high school and is new to the track, learned a great deal last year and has shown huge improvement during the cross-country season this year. As Wilson learns more race strategies and gets into the right race, he will not only surprise The Citadel but himself as well. All Wilson needs now is more confidence in himself. Freshmen Ray Guistizia and Steven Craig will also run/train with the milers.

Men’s Cross Country In Review 5,000 meters / Steeplechase: Seniors Nick Gastley and Marc Quesenberry are set to take over the two events that Robert Killian handled the past two years. Gastley was hurt during the 2003 season Marc Quesenberry but recently finished a very good crosscountry season at the number one position that had been held by Killian for three years. Quesenberry sat out the cross-country season following surgery at the beginning of last semester and should be ready for the coming track season. Sophomore Matt Holmes will also be an asset and add depth in the distance events.

Throws: The coaching staff will look to the sprinters and the throwers to carry most of the load this year. Senior Rick Austin, junior Chris Petty, and sophomores Zach DiBois and Alex Croskey all showed a great deal of improvement last season and should continue to improve this year. Rick Austin Austin scored points for the Bulldgos in four throwing events at last year’s championships, while DiBois upped the freshman record in the hammer by over thirty feet and should improve on that this year. All four worked very hard in the off season and came back stronger and quicker. They will all show improvement this season and the Bulldogs hope to see some big throws as the season progresses.

Men’s 2004 Cross Country In Review The Citadel men’s cross county team completed the 2004 season with senior Nick Gastley representing the squad in the NCAA Southeast Regional held at East Carolina University. Gastley finished the 10K race in a time of 34:39. The cross country season got off to an ominous start as the Bulldogs lost senior runner Marc Quesenberry to injury before the season even got underway. The first three meets went well with sophomore Will Wilson leading the Bulldogs to a second place finish with a time of 16:16 in a 5K race at the College of Charleston meet held at the Dixie Plantation. “Will improved his time by 53 seconds over his freshman year as we placed two runners in the top five,” said head cross country coach Jody Huddleston. The following week the Bulldogs traveled with Furman to Annapolis, MD to compete in the Navy Invitational. The Citadel took seventh place in the race with Gastley leading the Bulldogs with an 8K time of 26:35. “The trip went well until the morning of the race when we woke up to the remnants of hurricane Gaston and ran in heavy rain and wind,” commented Huddleston. “However, our times were better than when we ran there two years ago as Nick Gastley finished 23rd and ran one minute and ten seconds faster this year on a very challenging course.” At the Citadel Invitational, the Bulldogs showed continued improvement as the squad finished second out of seven Division I colleges. The Bulldogs also placed three runners in the top eight. Gastley, Wilson and sophomore Matt Holmes each ran under 27 minutes for the 8K race. “It has been a few years since we have had at least three runners under 27:00 in the same race,” remarked Huddleston. “With a freshman Ray Giustizia running 27:07, things were looking very bright. A few days later, number three runner Matt Holmes was injured and missed the rest of the season. That injury seemed to take the wind out of our sails as we ran okay in the next two meets. We just did not have enough depth and did not run as well at the conference meet as we had hoped.”

Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a B.S. degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he was awarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. From 1982 to 1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicate negotiations between NATO and the French military. Because of his outstanding service there, French President François Mtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an American colonel. In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadier general before beginning an assignment serving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted to major general and, in 1989, became the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster of one of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served until coming to The Citadel. General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, GA, in 1962. They have four children. General Grinalds is a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Senior Board of Directors of the Brasenose College Charitable Foundation, a trustee of Porter-Gaud School, and a member of the Executive Board of the Coastal Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a former trustee of Hampden-Sydney College and the Madeira School and has served as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina state selection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most soughtafter speakers, Robinson begins his fifth year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 197485, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson is in his fourth year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
